Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Monday

It’s all about the budget midfielders as Brighton and Stoke City share the spoils in a four-goal stalemate at the Amex.

Pascal Gross and Eric Choupo-Moting both maintain their fine starts to the season with a goal apiece as Gameweek 12 comes to a close.

Gross home comforts strike again

Pascal Gross’ impressive debut season in the top-flight continued with a strike in last night’s home draw with Stoke.

The Brighton playmaker also claimed maximum bonus to climb to fourth in the FPL midfield standings on 68 points and, at a cost of just 5.9, is now the top value midfielder in terms of points per million (11.5).

Gross has now scored or assisted 67% of Brighton’s goals when on the pitch – more than both any team-mate or any other regular midfielder for their respective side.

The German has three goals and five assists to his name and has picked up points in six of the last nine Gameweeks. But he now faces a real test of his consistency, with the Seagulls set to play Man United, Liverpool and Spurs in the upcoming five fixtures.

Yet with home clashes against Palace, Burnley and Watford and a trip to Huddersfield in the next seven Gameweeks, his 19% ownership may well choose to hold a player who is averaging 7.7 points per appearance in front of his own supporters.

Murray disappoints as Seagulls differentials deliver

Up against a Stoke defence that’s shipping two goals per match, Glenn Murray was the most captained player (6,868) for last night’s encounter on the back of four strikes in the previous three Gameweeks.

Transferred in by 112,000 FPL managers last week, the veteran failed to register a single attempt on goal as his claim for the role as our budget striker took a turn for the worse ahead of next weekend’s trip to Old Trafford.

But Chris Hughton’s differential midfielders have shown in recent weeks that it’s not all about Murray – or Gross – for that matter.

Jose Izquierdo’s goal was his second in the last four Gameweeks, while Davy Propper now has two assists over that same period after teeing up Gross for the opener. Anthony Knockaert had also chipped in with a goal and assist in the previous four.

At the start of the season, there was a fear at that the Seagulls may struggle for a cutting edge after arriving from the Championship. But last night’s result means they have now scored in eight of the last nine Gameweeks.

Choupo-Moting breaks away duck

Eric Choupo-Moting was handed another start up front and picked up his first away points of the season by firing the opener against Brighton.

The Stoke midfielder has served up two goals and three assists at the bet365 but has been a source of frustration on the road, drawing blanks in all five of his away appearances prior to last night.

With maximum bonus also in the bag, his 10-point tally means that the Cameroon international has now averaged a respectable 4.5 points per appearance.

Still priced at a mere 5.7, Choupo-Moting ranks third among all midfielders for both shots (35) and efforts in the box (26) over the first 12 Gameweeks.

Like Brighton’s Gross, his upcoming fixtures are somewhat mixed, with a home clash against Liverpool allied with trips to Spurs and Burnley in the next five Gameweeks.

Yet the fixtures around those matches – trips to Palace and Huddersfield and home encounters against Swansea City, West Ham and West Brom between now and Gameweek 20 – suggests he could still be in line to profit.

Consistent Shaqiri in the points again

While Kurt Zouma earned his second eight-point haul of the last three Gameweeks by netting the Potters’ second, Xherdan Shaqiri once again caught the eye from his advanced central berth.

The Swiss international’s assist for Choupo-Moting’s opener was his sixth set of attacking returns in his last eight Gameweek appearances for Mark Hughes’ men.

Although the likes of Gross has established himself as Brighton’s go-to attacker, Shaqiri is challenging Choupo-Moting for our attentions at Stoke.

He’s also averaged 4.5 ppm, yet his goal involvement is far superior – when on the pitch, he’s scored or assisted 54% of his side’s goals, compared with Choupo-Moting’s 40%.

Ranked fifth for chances created in midfield (27), the former Bayern man is now up to two goals and five assists for the season – already more than twice last term’s tally of two assists.

Given that Mark Hughes’ men continue to leak goals at an alarming rate – only West Ham have conceded more (25 to 24) – the Potters’ attack is becoming increasingly crucial to their prospects of survival.

Under no illusion that my team requires major surgery.

    Team Name: Spursy..
    FPL Team Code: https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/102786/event/12
    Total Points: 665
    GW Points: 64 🙁
    OR: 354,378

My only saving grace is that I find myself sitting at an OR of 354k despite 10/12 captain fails and not owning Salah or Lukaku all season.

I would appreciate all advice on this team, personally I am thinking to hold my transfer for this one week (unless Bailly is definitely out). The team, in my opinion, is extremely top heavy and light in midfield, however, I do not want to be binning Hazard to free up funds given the form he is in and his upcoming fixtures.

    Forster
    Walker - Daniels - Trippier - Bailly - Maguire
    Sane - Hazard
    Kane(c) - Morata - Vardy

    Bench: Elliot, Surman, Carroll, Carrick

    Cheers,

    Rahul

Defence is pretty cheap but nailed. Want Alonso after Pool so I might drop Hazard to Pogba and do Lukaku to Morata

Brought Hazard in on GW8 wc so no surgery needed for me. Think I have pretty decent squad value

Yea defence is cheap but that's not the end of the world. I've got a defence full of 4.5s-5s and they have been doing brilliant. Your teams nice and giving you a great season.

                    I'm looking at Aguero to niassse, and using the money to have a big midfield of;

Hazard, Salah, Sane, Sterling, richarlison. With Kane and Morata up top.

Salright. I should have all those players as well after this GW once Liverpool's out the way. I will have it spread it like this:

                  Pope, Elliot
                  Azpi, Bailly, Daniels, Moreno, Fernandez
                  Hazard, Salah, Sane, Richarlison, Loftus
Kane, Morata, Niasse with 0.1itb to upgrade/change Fernandez after GW17 (or maybe before)

silva is now going to be eclipsed by pogba who is the closest to price bracket, sterling rotation going to increase, kun and jesus so frustrating (see my team below), KDB in the same bracket as hazard so not as appealing

otamendi is looking a good pick, less likely to be rotated now stones out, and good fixtures

heres the thing, and i think it needs a deep discussion! Experience would suggest exactly what you say, but given midweek champions league games now turn into PL games is this next period actually better for city players? Yes they will rotate, but surely so will everyone else.... so at least now you avoid the rest, play CL, rest scenario. Of course, it will mean none of them play all the games, and someone like morata may have to.... but i tend to think its more of a balance than simply selling all city players. thoughts?

      1) Harry Kane has blanked in 8 games out of 12 and costs 12.8m English pounds ... Why aren't you advising the community to sell, sell, sell?

      2) Should we get Pogba now or wait until his 2 tricky fixtures are out of the way?

      3) Was Jonty the only one talking sense about Scott Dann?

      4) Arsenal had just 42% possession and Spurs struggled again. Is it time to take Jonty's possession theory seriously?

      5) Is it time to invest heavily in the midfield?

      6) Is Loftus-Cheek the magic bean who could?

      7) Man City have scored more goals (40) than Crystal Palace, Swansea, Huddersfield, West Brom & Southampton combined (39). Is it a huge risk to only have 1 Man City player?

      8) What is the secret to Az's success this season?

      9) How many Spurs and Chelsea players are you planning to get?

      10) Is it clever to have players that sometimes you play and sometimes you bench (like Choupo, Murray and Abraham) ... Or should you spend a little more on 11 players who start every gameweek without fail (while having an active, cheap as chips bench)? Is the flexibility of a fluid, unsettled starting 11 wise or does it smack of indecision as to what is the best formation to play?

      11) How difficult is it for you to restructure your midfield to get a premium mid like Hazard ... Especially when Premium Forwards like Morata can be obtained with a clean and swift single transfer?

I'm well aware many have already moved on but a hat trick in one of these gameweeks will be a big rank boost so for me, its worth holding onto him. Regardless of his scores so far, he is still very capable of doing this in one, if not 2 of the next 4 games

How have the scouts captaincy picks affected their ranks and performances this season?

I feel my returns have been overly extreme in the negative, just four positive weeks to date:

      1 Kane double (26)
      1 Aguero goal/assist (22)
      1 Kak goal (12)
      1 Hazard assist (10)
      7 one(2) and two(5) pointers
      And
      1 Mané red (-4)...brought him in for a hit no-less 🙁

My vice captain picks have outscored my captain picks by 204-90...

Having dragged myself out of a 2.9m GW5 rank, I've been hovering in the 300-400k bracket since my GW8 Wildcard. So much potential to push on dashed by poor captaincy returns - so incredibly frustrating  🙁

      1) How many more chances does Kane get? 7 blanks in 11 now.

      2) With the fixtures piling up should we be looking at nailed for 90 minutes options (Silva, Pogba, Eriksen etc) rather than more explosive options that often will get subbed on/off (Sane, Sterling, Hazard etc)?

A lot of people are rightly frustrated by Kane blanking again.

Are we better off looking for more consistent players and captaincy choices instead of those with the ability to explode?

If you had kept the armband on these players for all their home games (irrespective of injury and suspension), this is how many extra captaincy points you would have got from them:

      Sane 55
      Salah 45
      Gross 44
      Lukaku 42
      DDG 38
      Aguero 37
      Jones 34
      Morata 33
      Jesus 32
      Mee 31
      ...
      Kane 25

Players like Sane and Salah have been great so are anomalies. But look at DDG, Jones, Ben Mee, and Gross - all comfortably and consistently outscoring some big names, and all for less than 6m. Is consistency better than explosiveness going forward?

just how highly should we value bonus points?

for example richarlison has now gone 3 goals and 3 assists without a single bonus point. similarly zaha and alexis can keep scoring and miss out. mane is another one who is great for goals and assists but when loading up the page you almost expect to see him either missing out of clinging on to just one. salah has maybe been forgotten slightly as he has back to back braces lately, he is another one however. in fact it was only the additional 3bps for scoring the winning goal that kept him on 3 bonus vs southampton.

at the other end of the scale guys like eriksen, gross, ozil can get bonus with just an assist. a goal is usually followed by 3 bonus. how much should they be factored in? it's almost like it's not just working out who will score and assist most

So with Pep basically confirming that he'll be rotating his main strikers as long as Delph remains the playing LB, does this kill off both Aguero and Jesus as fantasy options? Or do the upsides continue to outweigh the downsides of rotation? Perhaps the most sensible option is to double up on Silva and Sane?

Anecdotally, it appears that Man United's clean sheet potential is largely dependent on Jones playing. Huddersfield (where he came off injured) and Newcastle spring to mind.

Is it worth just getting Jones from the United defence, seeing as he is an injury rotation risk? If he misses a game a sub would come in, but the prospects of DDG and the rest are severely diminished.

Should the Chupo assist have been given last night? It seems as if every now and again fpl deliberately make a controversial decision to create a reaction on social media. No doubt they'll use it for bantz with a z as the season goes on like they did with Brunt/McCauley last season. It makes a mockery of the game and winds people up. There would have been few complaints had it been given and I think the benefit of the doubt should be with the attacking player.

I would love to know how majority of teams so high ranked have such low tv but in theory if you are to have the high scoring players then your tv will go up as everyone will jump on those players. However that don't always seem the case... not even sure if this constitutes as a question..

Genuine question- What made Andy, Jonty and Mark to a lesser extent, captain Lukaku, when you seemed convinced you were captaining Kane. We all change our minds but Andy's reasoning was very convincing for Kane and not Lukaku! I repeat, a genuine question and not a dig, as you all must have seen/read something to change your minds and I'd like to know what the reasoning behind it was. Thanks

        Plus one with TALLEVIESON.
I did ask Jonty why on scoutcast himself and Andy was captaining Kane and Mark sat on the fence with either Kane or Lukaku. Saturday evening was surprised to see they went for Lukaku. I remember him saying Kane always scores against Arsenal, then did'nt back him. far as im aware Jonty did'nt reply to me. I also would like to hear what made them change their minds.

I was wavering between the two, but marginally in favour of Lukaku at the time.

By Friday I was fully behind Lukaku - the reason was that Pogba was looking a cert to start - and ManUtd score more when he plays. Also the news that Lascelles was out sealed it.

We will focus alot on our captaincy decisions across the season on tonight's Scoutcast.

For those with double City attack (likes of Jesus, Kun, Sterling representing week in week out line up anxiety) is it madness to contemplate selling one prior to plum game against Huddersfield.

Pogba and Lukaku are looking very appealing for the Brighton game but can only bring one in feasibly for a City player.

Is a big front three the way to go? Morata/Lukaku/Kane works with Richarlison and say a GroB/Choupo-Moting or with Chelseas delightful run coming should we be investing more in the back?

      1) Is it time to thank Phil Jones and book him a taxi out of our teams?
      2) Time to triple on Chelsea soon? Which defender if so?
      3) Why are we not captaining Salah?

With 11 game weeks in the next 7 calendar weeks, how does one balance rotation with having high scoring players. Eg can have a full squad but if rotated big players come on for sub appearance they aren't much use, other than covering injuries.

Could Salah/Hazard be relied upon for the captaincy every week? Over the season in terms of total points both could easily beat Kane...

If you can't trust Kane with captaincy in easy home fixtures then what is the point. Would be better off having a cheaper striker and bolstering the midfield potentially...

12.8 and 8 blanks is simply unacceptable

Last week some of us were not convinced by Newcastle's strong defensive record away due to the teams they have faced, low and behold, they got pumped at Old Trafford by United.

Do you see the same happening to Brighton who also have a misleading defensive record and do you think the warning signs are there after they conceded two to Stoke last night.

Does Pogba and Lukaku demand more attention for the captaincy as a result?

Form seems to be favouring the Mids more and even defenders slightly over strikers, what should we read into this and should so much money be tied up in 2 or 3 Premium strikers

Looking ahead to xmas and busy schedule what insight can the team give does this favour goals more or less over this period

is there any stats on teams with non starting / available players in squads in say top 1k , top 10k sides, those with just 11 or 12 could be set for some big ranking drops otherwise

Azpi vs Alonso, the discussion in the Hot Topics is interesting and surely a question on a lot of managers minds. Is Alonso about the revert to last seasons form, does it matter with Azpi finding a target man in Morata? Coin toss between them?

With Pep revealing Aguero and Jesus are unlikely to play together as he needs Sane to cover the wide left position and John Stones out for 6 weeks, is it time to forget Jesus/Aguero and accept the best way to maximise City assets is to bring in Sane, Otamendi and maybe Fernandinho?

How to handle Aguero's rotation? Too less playing time for 11m+ and with Moratta and Lukaku are decent options beside the city assets! Switchting to Moratta would enable a worthy upgrade for the defensie to save regarding the christmas schedule?

With Phil Jones seemingly ruled out of the midweek and weekend match by Mourinho, is it now time to move on even if you bought him for his initial price? Good value thus far, but with the matches coming thick and fast perhaps it's better to get another nailed on defender.

What would his best replacement be? Other premium defenders I'm looking at would be Kolasinac and Otamendi.

      A tasty 73, GW rank 700k.

Rough; very little, Kane I guess. Oh Bailly not starting but didn’t miss a cleanie anyway.

Smooth; Salah(c), very nearly did a late switch to Kane though... Brought Mee in and started in a 4-4-2. Kolasanic, Silva, Sterling, Firmino all chipping in something then my man Gross topping off with a 10 pointer last night. Had him since first draft! A proper under the radar FFS pick!

Back up to OR of 146k after slipping back from 50k in recent weeks. Wildcard and all chips in pocket too.

Triple spurs (Kane, Alli and Eriksen) has basically wrecked my season. Three weeks in a row ranked under 4 million and dropped to 2 million overall. Now 100+ points behind in mini leagues and about 2 million less in TV. But they surely have to come good, don’t they?

rough: pope got 2 bonus with 1 save (bony heading the ball straight into his arms).
as a non owner it's painful enough seeing him and burnley facing so many shots yet never conceding but at least he's earning those bonus, so when they completely stifle swansea yet he still gets 2 bonus it's head against the wall stuff.

rough: charlie daniels getting away with one of the more obvious yellows of the season. it would have not only robbed him of a point but also cancelled out his bonus. ake 7, daniels 5 rather than the actual result daniels 8, ake 6. as you can guess i picked ake. in any clean sheet where daniels doesn't get attacking returns you expect to make your headway

the gameweek was very smooth so those roughs are actually about other players/teams.

a smooth would be femenia not conceding, given how many good chances west ham had. it lead to a great predictive text inspired message on sunday evening, "happy with the clean sheet, can't even remember the last one. i've got dementia."

Hits can work. Defence was a mess and I wanted Salah so I took a -12.

      Out: Davies (1), Luiz (0), Otamendi (0) and Iwobi (0) = 1.
      In: Jones (0), Salah (16), Daniels (8) and Duffy (1) = 25.

Jones not playing brought Choupo-Moting 10 off the bench making 35 for new players. With the hit that's 23 up on before and a more flexible squad.

Jonty.......i think this covers all bases!!

Started with Luiz alli Sterling RLC jones (FT) all flagged, Jesus who hasn't appeared much of late , 2 non players, Elliot in goal and Cedric away to Liverpool. Hated doing it but with no transfers and no way out played an early free hit.

The rough. Picked Gomez over klavan... and with 1 million to spare last minute swap from smalling to bailly. Only fielded ten men. Kept Kane

But the ten smooth men were.... de gea, Moreno, Daniels, hazard, salah, sane, Wilson, lukaku, Kane.... plus surman off bench. 94 points (13 bonuses). Quite pleased to say the least after some poor weeks and what looked like a ravaged squad, that have all now been unflagged. Oooooof.

      A smooooth wildcard.

Dumped Ryan, Otamendi, Lascelles, Richarlison, Ramsey, Jesus, Suttner, KLong and Foster, representing a total of 21 points for the ones I would have played).

Got in Pope (8), Azpi (6), Mee (6), Duffy (1 for Jones), Salah (16), Sané (7), RLC (5) alongside Abraham (benched), Dunk (benched) and Elliot (benched), for 49 points from them and bench coverage for Jones missing out.

A 28 point swing for a total of 75 this week, green arrows gaining 300k overall, set up with a solid bench for Christmas, and with a squad I can rely on and tweak going forward. A smooth wildcard all round!

Drew my h2h with opponent who took a 32 point hit - 9 transfers. 52 - 52. He takes a hit now and then but felt his team needed wholesale changes for the long term - another wildcard he called it.

I took a minus 8 taking out Otamendi, Mbemba and Ritchie for Daniels, Duffy and Richarlison so was a positive points hit. I was also going to do Aguero out for Morata and Chalobah for Choupo Moting but decided no because he took so many hits - this cost me.

      His transfers - I.D 1070829

      Schlinder (0) > Alonso (14)
      Jones (0) > Dunk (1)
      Alli (2) > Hazard (18)
      Vardy (2) > Abraham (2)
      Jesus (8) > Lukaku (6)
      Brady (6) > Fernandinho (3)
      Foster (1) > Pope (8)
      Sterling (3) > Sane (7)
      Yoshida (0) > Moreno (6)

      Previous players = 22
      New players = 65
      Minus 32 for points hit = 33
Gain of 11 points and his team so much better.

      A -7 point swing.

Smooth = WC success I guess, total 74 points. Last minute captain switch to from Kane > Lukaku.

can't complain after 84 (-8) even with a 11:28 switch from Salah to Sane as captain

Rough, just a grumble, but it really bugs me that having decided to get DDG, he lasts all of 15 minutes before letting in his first home goal since the new year

Is a big front three the way to go? Morata/Lukaku/Kane works with Richarlison and say a GroB/Choupo-Moting or with Chelseas delightful run coming should we be investing more in the back?

Rough: Captained Azpi over Morata and Salah, and kept Mariappa's 6th points on the bench.

Smooth: Didn't captain Kane, saved my free transfer and got returns from 9 players (Azpi, Ward, Daniels, Salah, Silva, Richarlison, Zaha, Gross, Morata) despite having money tied up on the bench in Otamendi and Abraham 🙂

Managed 84 points to climb from 697k to 313k.

Rough: I'm in the position, again, where I have 2FTs and nothing to do. Last time this happened I sold KDB for Mkhitaryan, and didn't spend the extra cash ITB for about 5 weeks, missing out on all KDB's points and the potential from the money ITB. I'm nervous about which potential whim is going to turn into a transfer and cost my points this week (especially since literally every transfer I've made this season has cost me points). Boo hoo

Smooth: Took a -8 that finally paid off. Tripled up on cheap Burnley defenders: brought in Mee and Pope for Otamendi and Foster (already had Ward). Clean sheets all around for 19 points from the three of them... and it gave me enough cash to finally bring in Salah.

Rough: captained Kane (again) instead of new addition Salah.

      Smooth: Took a -4 for Pope(8) and Daniels(8) in for Foster(1) and Bavies(1). 84 points.

Pretty darn smooth: Hazard, Salah, ECM, Lu(k)aku with Jesus/Daniels on 8pts as well. Highest haul of the season @ 85 and my highest ranking of the season (268k). I was at my lowest of 1.5m after GW7 when I hit WC.

Rough: Luiz not playing and Stones going off injured were the two CS that weren't.

      Rough: took a -20
Smooth: went from 809k to 620k thanks to Alonso, Gross, Richarlison and Zaha as my most differential players.

The 20pt hit was to sort out any rotation issues and be safe over the next 10 gws. Even though it didn't pay out instantly, I think it will long term. My transfers:
      Jesus -> Lukaku
Vardy -> Calvert-Lewin(should've went Niasse in hindsight)
RLC -> Zaha(due to bigger point potential)
      Ramsey -> Sterling
      Davies -> Jones
Ward -> Mee(to fund the next transfer)
      Forster -> DDG

By far the bravest move this season for me, let's see how it turns out during the Christmas period.
