Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Strike Not Enough

A goal from their talisman fails to drag Spurs from their slump as Leicester City inflict a third defeat in five matches on Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Harry Kane’s seventh goal in as many away matches this season was, on the face of it, the sign of a good night’s work at Leicester City.

The strike was certainly a relief for the 17.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers, that’s close to a million, who captained him.

But they could have been excused for expecting more – his six-point return at the King Power Stadium was the first time this season he’s failed to earn bonus when on the scoresheet.

And then there’s the issue of Spurs themselves. How long can a misfiring side keep relying on Kane to bail them out, particularly when he has struggled to make an impact at home all season?

The 2-1 defeat last night was their third straight match without a win, and their third loss in five, with perhaps the only positive on the night the return from long-term injury of Erik Lamela (6.3), who was handed 13 minutes from the bench and still found the time to set up Kane’s goal.

However, from a Fantasy perspective, his return to contention only clouds the issue in the Spurs midfield, handing Pochettino more options to rotate.

Not that we have interest in that Spurs midfield right now.

Christian Eriksen missed a glorious chance to score his first goal since Gameweek 8 and continues to leak owners as a result. He lost 166,000+ in the lead up to last night, and a further 12,000+ since have made him the third most sold player heading into Gameweek 15.

Pochettino can’t even offer us defensive solidity to fall back on at the moment. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in six matches and the rotation issues surrounding their wing-backs – Serge Aurier and Danny Rose were given the nod last night – have further dented managers’ confidence in Ben Davies.

The Welsh international has lost owners in five of the last six Gameweeks and is already exceeding Eriksen’s sales going into the weekend trip to Watford.

That match precedes a Champions League dead rubber in which Pochettino will surely rest key assets, so Davies and Kieran Trippier could well play at both Watford and in Gameweek 16’s Wembley visit from Stoke City.

But despite a fine short-term schedule (wat STK BHA), investment in any of Spurs’ stars is an increasingly fraught affair at present.

Foxes back in focus

New Leicester manager Claude Puel has described his side as a work in progress, and that progress was there for all to see against Spurs.

Jamie Vardy’s goal was a huge relief for his 13.9% ownership, although more than 133,000 managers have jumped ship over the past six Gameweeks, with the England man having found the net just twice in his last eight starts.

The form of Riyad Mahrez is considerably more encouraging.

His winner last night was his third goal of the season, and all have come since Gameweek 8. During the same period, he’s also provided three of his six assists for the campaign.

Owned by just 4.2%, the midfielder could prove to be an excellent pre-Christmas differential as the Foxes prepare for a promising quartet of matches (BUR new sou CRY) up next.

However, Demarai Gray’s stock – previously buoyant under Puel when he started the last four – took a dent following last night’s encounter. The 5.3 midfield option was benched for the first by his manager, with Shinji Okazaki returning to the starting line-up.

At the back, things remain patchy. Leicester have kept a very unPuel-like one clean sheet in seven, but those short-term fixtures could help improve that.

Christian Fuchs missed out for the Foxes due to the birth of his daughter on Tuesday afternoon, while striker Kelechi Iheanacho was also absent through illness but is expected back in the squad for Gameweek 14.

Exact same as me. Taken a bit of a dent recently though with having to sell a few players with value tied up in them (e.g Jones, Elliott).

What to do with Kane? Basicly he is a season keeper, but atm it seems that Spurs are out of form. And when we go to the festive period Spurs will presumably be more tired as they do not have much of cover for attacking midfielder position. Eriksen and Alli both were poor yesterday. Lamela is back but it is not enough. Sissoko is not doing enough not sure if he is even capable. Imo Son has been their best attacking player recently. If Kane doesn't get scoring chances against mid-table/bottom teams how you can justify his 12.8 price tag?

Just thinking if I should transfer Kane to Morata/Lacazette and to get one more premium midfielder or defender?

Kane had 6 shots yesterday, albeit only 1 went in. So he is getting his chances.

Most of them were 25 yards out, blocked immediately by the defenders.

Ok. 6 shots is good though Leicester were defending quite well and kept Spurs away from dangerous positions. Llorente missed couple of changes also.

This the the thing though - he has been shooting and shooting all season. All throughout August and beyond his 'stats' have been incredible, but they are just not being converted into goals. Is is being too selfish? Are defenders starting to suss him out? There is a serious issue here. If he had gone on a two game blank run with massive underlying stats I would be more confident but he simply hasn't been scoring anywhere near his predicted potential all season.

*enough goals I should say. He's scoring at an average rate, but significantly below par for his massive price tag.

I honestly think we could spend the money a bit more successfully elsewhere.

As per previous seasons, I'm expecting spurs to have a good run over Christmas. They like the festive schedule; fitness being a key asset. This is just a blip

For me there isnt a standout choice at the moment so Kane will have to suffice. He's doing alright. I think we expect too much from him. Trouble with using his funds elsewhere is you miss one haul, you want him back and could cost 20pts (haul + hits). He's still capable of doing, had plenty chances again yesterday. For me, I'm holding, very happy with my team. Could do with another mil or 2 (who couldn't) that Kane could easily provide but it could be damaging in the long run

I think best strikers are Kane and Aguero then comes the rest (Morata, Jesus, Lukaku, Lacazette, Vardy...) And Kane is 100% nailed so I think I am still keeping him. But if Spurs doesn't improve their game or if their performance gets worse then I need to evaluate again.

No cause for concern here unless you think approaching a goal a game isn't good enough for the premium striker. If anything, it's encouraging that his returns are very satisfactory in a poor period

That is what I have been thinking also. Against Arsenal Spurs were very poor now against WBA and Leicester they have not really convinced. It is not just Kane is rather their overall performance which doesn't impress much atm. And does it get better when they need to play more frequently.

I think Spurs miss Wanyama, they should also move Eriksen back into a more attacking position - he's playing too deep right now. I'd only have Kane from them until they turn the corner.

If you read the article (sky sports) in the week Hazard is also always limping at the end of a game. Limping and injured for the next game are two different things. Zap is certainly the most nailed on outfield player in that team.

If you have Morata already and thinking of selling Kane...who would you buy? There so limited options out there for December. Lukaku - needs new boots apparently! Jesus/Kun - flip a coin to see who starts. Lacazette - hahaha! Hardy - too inconsistent for his price. Firming - rotation risk.

Is it time to look at a mid priced striker and low money into Mid/Def???

    Kane owner, morata captainer here.
I am not tempted to sell kane yet, at the end of the day he’s scored both last games and has good fixtures.

    BUT

he’s over a million more than any other player. so to justify that price tag he needs to finish the season as the easy top scorer. and I don’t think he will

In fact previous 12.5+ players e.g. Ronaldo, bale, henry would be getting a minimum 6 a game pretty much, it would be unheard of for this many blanks and only 2 double digit hauls. that’s what galls me I think

barring injury I don’t know if I’ll have the bottle to sell him this season but can’t shake the feeling that at the end of it i’ll be thinking I might have been duped out of extra money for defence or midfield

He doesn't need to finish top scorer, this is a fallacy. He simply needs to be the best second or third option in a two or three man attack

ok then so who will the others be? probably kun and morata? you could save yourself 1mil there and have a hazard instead of an Eriksen for example

but playing devils advocate. i think he needs to be essential for 12.8, he’s not and we’re almost halfway through the season

I'm not arguing about who should be up there.just pointing out that he doesn't need to be top scorer to justify ownership.

I'd like to see some stats to back up that his form is a lot poorer than other traditional 12.5 ers

I think someone posted last night that at Kane's current strike rate that he'll be on for 27 goals this season, to put that into perspective only Suarez has managed to score more over the past five seasons (31), I think between them Henry and Ronaldo only managed +27 goals three times.

He's not getting the C from me in a hurry but, as I already have Morata, who would I replace Kane with?

Nobody else offers any appeal, frankly (Maybe Lacazette if he-who-knows would just give him close to 90 minutes every game, but he-knows better than me, the gimp)

So - he's an expensive luxury, but one I cannot live withyout

He's currently on course for 220 despite Spurs bad form. Also of note is that they've won no penalties yet this year....

Currently not quite making it into that top, top, 240+ bracket but not far off it

There are few players that have the points potential he has atm. He is fantasy gold in almost every aspect. The stats show this. But... like any player he is to some extent reliant on the team performing as well, and Tottenham are struggling somewhat right now.

He's still scoring though and when he hits that purple patch and scores 3 or 4 in a single week I want to own him and have the armband on him. Only a few other players in the premier league have that explosiveness imo (Sahcnez, Aguero and Hazard?)

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 15

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

    Really quick turnaround this week.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random at 4pm today and then be asked to submit their XI by 12noon Friday by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a next Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

So I understand that Spurs do not perform too well when Aldy is injured. Since their reliance at the back is diminished, it seems to have a ripple effect on the attacking front, regardless of their formations. I observed similar trends during the time Aldy was injured last season (if anyone can extract this info could be useful, not too good with this kind of stuff).

Does this mean sell Kane now and buy back once Aldy is fit? Scoring points like Lukaku at his price tag may not be too appealing. Opinions?

It mainly relates to Kane. Started up in earnest when Dembele was injured and suddenly Kane's goals dried up, only scoring again when the midfielder was back.

              Was quite incredible the switch.

      It's not just Toby

Spurs were missing 4 of their best 11 last night. Toby. Trippier. Davies. Wanyama. Two of those Poch couldn't do anything about but he has to stop this rotation fullback madness. Look how much Davies improved last season when Rose got injured - Trippier likewise when he got a clear run in the team. He needs to play his best two 80% of the time not 50%. Trippier is SO much better going forward than Aurier - who is a waste of space attacking wise.

Spurs will smash Watford this week with those two full backs in again because they're so attacking and they'll have loads of space.

My advice? Hold on to Spurs assets for one more week and then sell, sell, sell.

I disagree on the full backs.

Davies has not performed well lately. He's been bang average. Rose has been one of Tottenham's most prominent players in his last 2 games. Aurier is erratic, but he also created the biggest chance of the game with a beautiful cross. I prefer Trippier over Aurier, but it's very marginal.

Tottenham were bad last night due to players that start every game. Trippier and Davies didn't make a difference against WBA, and they are not going to turn anything around against Watford. Players like Dier, Alli and Eriksen can't keep playing as poorly as they are doing currently. Kane needs more support up top. Against WBA and Leicester he was so much more dangerous once he got to play behind Llorente.

Davies has tailed off as soon as Rose got back. Not a surprise there - he is a player who needs to play week in, week out.

I agree that other Spurs players aren't pulling their weight (Alli has largely been awful all season, Eriksen just looks shattered) but in the system they play the wing backs are SO important to them. As is Toby playing in long diagonals to them as well.

Also he's playing the wrong full backs at the wrong time - there isn't even any sense to it. Trippier is so attacking he needs to play more in games where he is given a lot of space to run into. In other words the away games, not the easier home games where teams are just parking the bus. To be frank Spurs should be playing with a back 4 in those games anyway. They don't have a Fabregas figure like Chelsea do to play that formation week in, week out. Especially with Eriksen off the boil.

Agreed on Trippier vs. Aurier. Given Alli and Eriksen are playing poorly at the moment Tottenham need more attacking impetus, and Trippier may be the best at crossing from full-back around, whereas Aurier offers nothing.

Rose vs. Bavies is a bit closer to call.

      i actually agree with this.
Not so much the Toby A factor but that Dier has had to drop back to cover him. Spurs mid not so efficient without him and actually pulling Eriksen back to pick up the ball. Certainly don't have a mid to cover Dier's forward passing that often launches them forward.
Other thing still remains that Spurs are this season's Utd. Loads of attempts, ridiculous number of blocked shots and low conversion rate - exactly same as Utd last year until Zlatan finally got going

This was the case last season. When Toby got injured the cleanies dried up. I agree I think Toby is the glue that holds the team together. I'm happy with Kane, but see no point in Davies now.

I feel last night is the beginning of the end for this Spurs team. Walker leaving put pressure on the squad to deliver this season. The league is gone. Unless they win a cup I can see this team breaking up sadly.

I think Spurs, whether consciously or subconsciously, are prioritising the Champions League this season. The PL has gone, they won't win that this season now. I think results will pick up a bit now, but come february and the return of the CL I expect their eye to go off the ball again and further rotation around key fixtures to kick in.

The main thing is that despite spurs slump he's still getting goals, still attempting shots and getting into those positions. Spurs will overcome this form and he will be back to getting braces, assists and bonus. Most of the first team players should be rested against Apoel and come back revitalised ready to feed kane again. This season he is 26 games, 26 goals.

There are other options than Morata. I am happy owning Hazard and Alonso. Think that's enough Chelsea cover.

Will my 4 point hit work out? I did Smalling (1), Lukaku (5) and D Silva to Hazard, Jesus and Daniels.

As I said last night, Kane is on course for 27 goals in the prem this season at his current rate. That and Spurs haven't won a penalty all season.

27 is good. Probably reach 30 if the penalties arrive.

Nice. I can't see past Kane captain away to Watford. They are so porous and attack. Perfect game for Spurs
