Scout Notes – Austin Keeps Cherries in Check

Charlie Austin delivers for Southampton once again, ensuring a hard-fought draw on the south coast as Fantasy managers prepare to abandon their short-term investment in Bournemouth.

The Saints striker returned to the starting XI today after being omitted for the midweek run-around at Manchester City.

Austin responded by scoring another vital goal, the equaliser from a Nathan Redmond assist, to make it three from his last two starts.

Based on data from the last three Gameweeks, only Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette can better Austin’s eight shots in the box – and that despite being limited to a brief cameo in midweek.

That statistic, along with his three goals, highlights his potential as a budget option available for just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League.

He will take his opportunities when given pitch-time, but a lack of mobility has previously held the striker back, with manager Mauricio Pellegrino largely turning to Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long to lead his attack.

Pellegrino may now find it difficult to overlook Austin, although a congested festive schedule, coupled with the 28-year-old’s propensity to pick up injuries, will ensure that his minutes and starts are managed further.

Southampton’s fixtures also stacks the odds against him as a Fantasy asset.

He’ll face Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United over the next six Gameweeks; hardly match-ups that encourage renewed interest in the Saints after we were burned by Pellegrino’s side over their incredibly favourable opening to the campaign.

The defence remains the popular area of the squad, with Ryan Bertrand (8.4%) and Fraser Forster (8%) the most owned players.

However, the backline have now have kept just one clean sheet in the last ten Gameweeks and there’s little to suggest that they can improve on that over a punishing run of opponents.

Cherries reach their sell-by date

Ryan Fraser scored in his first start since Gameweek 5, but it’s his fellow midfielder Andrew Surman who continues to offer solid value.

Surman’s assist today took him to three for the season, all of which have arrived in the last six Gameweeks.

He’s also scored twice and his seven-point showing against the Saints, which included two bonus, took him to a club-leading 57 points for the season – and all for just 4.8.

Things were rather less rosy for the 5.4% of managers with Callum Wilson (6.1) as their third striker, however.

Having boosted his ownership by 342,000+ since a Gameweek 12 hat-trick against Huddersfield, Wilson was denied a fifth successive start today and failed to produce from a 21-minute appearance from the bench.

He lost over 6,000 owners heading into Gameweek 15 and has already shed another 10,000 coming out of it. That will surely only increase ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

Elsewhere, the Cherries’ most popular FPL asset, Charlie Daniels (13.3%), also delivered little as Eddie Howe’s men were denied a clean sheet for the second successive home match, having secured three straight shut-outs in the three previous fixtures.

Next Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace marks the end of a strong run of fixtures since Gameweek 11.

Adam Smith – recalled for Steve Cook on Sunday – will miss that Eagles clash having picked up his fifth booking today – he was controversially booked for simulation in the penalty area by referee Jonathan Moss, who reportedly later admitted the error.

Following the Selhurst Park encounter, Howe’s men will face a visit from Liverpool sandwiched between trips to both Manchester clubs.

The fixtures do soften considerably from Gameweek 20, and that might just be enough to offer Daniels, if not Wilson, a stay of execution.

    A) Sane, Kane & Steve Davis > Morata, Ramsey & Coutinho (-12)
    B) Kane & Sane > Morata & Coutinho (-8)
    C) Sane > Countinho (-4)

Which would you do? That -12 looks big but is actually tempting me!

Well a -8 payed off massively for me.
I wouldn't drop Kane for a hit before Stoke though.

I'd only do C if you will captain Couts.

Tom Carroll to RLC. Seems like a pointless transfer, but Carroll is about to drop, picking up next to no points, where as RLC is only 0.1 more expensive, nailed and picking up returns at home.

        Carroll & Sane (1 yellow off suspension) > RLC & Coutinho is worth a -4, isn't it?

A lot of positivity towards Lacazette now it seems.

He has scored eight goals, but has three bonus overall (!). Quite a feat. Gets subbed a lot too.

    So what's the appeal?

Yeah, he looked up for it, absolutely. But tight festive season, I do not at all expect the guy to start more than 75% of matches. He'll probably be subbed early in most too

He scored 2 in the last two, could have been easily 4 if not De Gea and injury.
I dropped him (albeit with success) due to Wenger's comments.

He looked really good against Man Utd and we are hard up for strikers. Hopefully Wenger starts trusting him more.

I had a horrible week so I'm going to spend some time to think over my transfers but I'm really considering a Kane/Sané to Lacazette/Hazard move, then captain Hazard until gw22.

He's starting to gel in with the rest of the team...if Wenger starts to give him 90 minutes more regulary, the baps along with doubles or hattricks are not far away.

Got into the top 50k with a nice 74 points this week. I want to set up my team so I can drop Kane before the City match for Firmino and upgrade RLC to Sane or Coutinho, but that would involve downgrading a defender this week with my FT.

Really struggling with who to pick out of the budget defenders. Kenny, Zegelaar and Chilwell all seem good options, but who is the most secure of starts of the 3?

      Pope Speroni
      Alonso Otamendi Ward Kiko Fernandez
      Hazard Salah Silva Choupo RLC
      Kane Morata Niasse

1 FT, 0.2 ITB. Want to do Choupo > Richarlison but 0.9 short.

      A) Niasse > DCL (would need doing tonight)
      B) Save FT (and do Choupo > Richarlison with a 3 transfer -4 next week)

None of the replacements seem worth it for him. Guessing you've already got Morata or 3 x Chelsea. Wait until last minute if you do get rid. He's an Aguero injury away from being the best player to own in the game.

Thought about this but selling Vardy and Sane for a hit could backfire with their fixtures. Hazard does seem essential atm though.

Ive been missing captaincy for the whole season too. Think Id be 50 points better if I just swapped my C and VC. Had it on Haz till 5 min before deadline then did the hokey pokey between him and Kane and it sadly landed on Harry (while I was 100% i actually C Haz, even told that to my ml rivals). What can you do, eh? 🙂

Is Ramsey worth an extra £1.5m over Choupo-Moting? I'm tempted but a stream of assists doesn't excite me, that money could go elsewhere.

If I go Ramsey, will need a good 4.5(ish) defender to replace Daniels with. Kabasele, Duffy or Tarkowski? One of these teams will soon be my GK.

Kiki, Zeeglar or Sakho? Not sure if Z is nailed and who is likely to score more out of the Watford boys as I don't follow them. Palace and Watford both seem to have reasonable fixtures coming up. My thinking was to get rid of Daniels for one of them

All decent choices. Kiko slightly more nailed and a bap whore with Zeege fighting for the spot with Holebas but Zeg looked a bigger assist threat up until the game vs Spurs (where Kiko looked better offensively imo). CP look better defensively after the new appointment and Sakho always a threat.
