Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Lingard and Pogba Topple Toffees

Paul Pogba revives his Fantasy stock, though Jesse Lingard’s rapid ascent as a cut-price midfield option dominates proceedings as Manchester United ease through the gears to see off Everton.

Lingard’s sublime second strike for the visitors at Goodison means he now has seven goals and two assists from the last nine Gameweeks.

The reaction from Fantasy Premier League managers has been instant. Lingard is the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 23, with 42,000+ making the move. That has seen his price rise to 6.2 overnight, with a further rise looking likely prior to the next deadline.

Lingard had already proved a popular figure even before his effort on Merseyside.

He was signed by 94,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline and was second only to Roberto Firmino for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 21, claiming over 303,000 new owners.

It’s difficult to question the move for Lingard at present. Although shifted from a No 10 position to a role on the left at Goodison Park, he still managed to float into central areas and was only denied a second goal by a superb Jordan Pickford save.

Indeed, since cementing a run of starts from Gameweek 14 onwards, his total of 13 shots on target is matched only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders. He easily tops the United ranks for shots over that period and is also second only to Juan Mata for chances created.

That combined threat and creativity, coupled with a modest price tag, creates a very strong case for inclusion in our midfields at this time, even with competition so fierce.

And yet Pogba also used Monday’s match to highlight that he cannot be totally overlooked.

Restricted to just one penalty area touch in his three appearances since returning from suspension in Gameweek 19, Pogba was given more freedom to join the attack against Everton.

The inclusion of Ander Herrera in the starting line-up allowed Pogba to influence matters in attack and he had eight touches in the box, including two of his four shots on goal.

Pogba ended the match with two assists and a maximum bonus return to deliver a first double-figure score since Gameweek 12. However, he is still without a goal in seven starts.

The Frenchman was sold by 73,000+ ahead of Monday’s match, losing 69,000+ in net ownership over the last two Gameweeks.

The emergence of Lingard will do little to reverse that trend, though with an Old Trafford meeting with Stoke City up next, there is surely an incentive for his remaining 633,000+ manages to sit tight.

Trips to Burnley and Spurs then follow – both altogether more testing fixtures for United’s attack.

United Defence Back on Track

A run of just one clean sheet in seven was halted by the goalless draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21. With another clean sheet achieved at Everton, confidence in Jose Mourinho’s backline is being restored.

David De Gea continues to stretch out in front in the overall goalkeeper standings on 114 points, edging ahead of Burnley’s Nick Pope for points per match (5.2 vs 4.9).

Phil Jones – at 5.6 to De Gea’s 5.9 – is the alternative cover in the United defence.

Surprisingly, the centre-back started again for a sixth successive Gameweek, destroying the theory that he may struggle to chain appearances together over this festive period.

That should reassure us on his prospects from this point on, with a clean sheet against the Potters in Gameweek 24 on the cards.

Jones is currently the most signed defender ahead of Gameweek 24.

However, Mourinho’s new outlook on Luke Shaw also has to be considered. The left-back has now started and completed 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks.

Priced at just 4.9, if Shaw can show that he has cemented a starting role, there is no question that he is another asset to consider.

Concerns Mount for Calvert-Lewin

While United’s assets enjoyed a revival in Monday’s meeting, confidence in Everton as a source of Fantasy talent took a blow.

Wayne Rooney‘s recall to the starting XI failed to produce returns for a player now part of 922,000+ FPL squads. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was handed a rest with Oumar Niasse leading the Toffees attack.

Calvert-Lewin’s potential as a cut-price third or even second striker will come under scrutiny from this point. He has produced just a single goal in six Gameweeks and, with Sam Allardyce confirming a bid for Cenk Tosun, it’s clear that his role and minutes could soon be reduced.

Everton failed to register a shot on target against United, with Allardyce making it clear that the club is moving to address matters in attack.

“We know where our problems are, the club knew before I got here that was the problem. We’re trying to cure that in this window by getting a frontline that can threaten and score goals.”

In defence, Jonjoe Kenny was also handed a rest after struggling in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21. It remains to be seen if he is handed a recall over Mason Holgate at right-back for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool, with a visit to Spurs to follow in Gameweek 23.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I don't really think that there is enough wrong with it to wildcard, theres a few players you'll probably want to shift but unless theres certain players you really want you could probably just take a -4 hit this week, then just use your FT or another -4 next week to sort everything out

Thanks, who do you thi k is priority? I was planning on shifting Alli back to Salah and maybe Son to Pogba, depending on how Spurs do this week.

I would definitely be shipping out one of the spurs midfielders first , i think the double up after the DGW is unnecessary especially since you have Kane, they play three of the top six in game weeks 25-27 so id probably ship both alli and son by then. The moves you've suggested are both good. I'd look at moving Calvert Lewin on next week too especially if there is any news about Big Sam in the transfer market. I can't say I'm a fan of your goalkeeping options either but that is more of a luxury transfer and would definitely put it near the bottom of the list.

Does anybody else think that Allardyce used the Man Utd game yesterday as an example to the owners of the lack of squad depth?

Benching Siggy and not bringing him on is just ridiculous. Playing Niasse when he is clearly useless.

Felt like Fat Sam expected to lose the game so just played his second string to make a point to Kenwright that he needs to get his cheque book out

They lack a striker and that’s about it. Decent enough depth. Put united under a lot of pressure in the second half and if it wasnt for Lingard’s great strike were looking like taking points in that match

Everton have a big squad - just short up front.and like most pl sides only carrying 3 strikers.
Don't expect to see a lot of goals from an Allardyce side.

Yeah I know that but they lack quality even though they do have a lot of players.

Playing Niasse is Fat Sam’s way of making it clear to the board that he needs a new one

It is potentially a top 8 squad.
No secret that not replacing lukaku was going to cause them problems even at start of season.
Big Sam brings in a striker it won't be a finisher etc. Will be an enabler, target man, link up striker. Who took Carroll to West Ham?

It's so annoying as he looked great when playing and should be nailed for this United team. In fact pretty much any time.

Yet somehow Mourinho is ruining him and it's taken a bad run of injuries to get him any time. Hope he gets out to another premier league team this window.

How does Pogba, Ward and Morata out for Kun, Richarlison and Stones sound? For -4.

    That would give me

    Kane, Kun, Quaner

BREAKING: There is a chance Kevin De Bruyne will feature for Manchester City tonight. The injury is not as bad as first feared.

can get this for -4, very tempting

    DDG

    Otamendi Christensen Jones

    Salah Pogba Son Sterling Arnautovic

    Kane Firmino

    subs: Elliot, DLC, Orgonna, 3.9

      Lokk good

You'll get those 4 points back i reckon

Similar to my team, but I opted for a weaker defence to get Kane + Firm + Aguero up top

just sold rlc. if im going to play 5 in the middle he's a poor pick. can't see myself making major downgrades to fit aguero in, who has been very lucky this season

          De Gea
          Ota Vert Ogbona
          Lindgard Sterling Arnie Alli Salah
          Kane Firmino

          Subs: Elliot, Robertson, Crouch, Mbemba

If I make Cout DCL to Lindgard Firmino... would leave me money to upgrade Vert to Alonso or upgrade Robertson... good plan?

It's only the Sun (https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/5248310/kevin-de-bruyne-man-city-gabriel-jesus-injury-update/) but sounds positive that KDB is ok and back in contention for today.

Anyone else read anymore about it? As I'm struggling for 11 players with all the rotation this week...

If Silva is back I really doubt he'd be risked. Even if not, they have enough depth in squad to beat Watford at home. He must be pretty damn sore still.

It's probably wishful thinking to see him play - though glad I didn't panic transfer him out at the weekend. The tackle was a real horror and feared that was his season done.

I got Kane in this week as part of FH. Would you still look at getting him in next game week. It will mean ditching Lacazette and one of Hazard or Coutinho for a hit to do it.

      Yes

I got rid of Kane to get Haz (then Kane went on to get double hattricks)

So get Kane and keep him imo

Hazard out was easy for me, so many great options in midfield that look better than him atm

I'm very much with Slouch on this one. This is still a great site which I have been frequenting for many, many years - but sadly only held up by the articles now, and not the comments section. There are still great posters and great posts, but it's becoming a little like finding a needle in a haystack and often great discussions are hidden in a mountain-full of meaningless chaff.

Mark and team have always provided a medium for anyone, not just an exclusive few, to post - and that is entirely correct and in keeping with how the site has been historically run. But with the popularity comes problems. I think Sims idea of avoiding if it gets tiresome is a good one.

Thank you for the endorsement. Anyone who shoots down the idiotic comments becomes a figure of hatred. The comments section on match days is predominantly dross . There still exists a good deal of meaningful discussion on occasions. I agree that the articles are always useful and thought provoking but it is sad that the mods and owners really have their hands tied to a large extent when the posts just become poor rather than contravening obvious rules and regulations.

He is limited and I think Sam knows it.

      I’d look elsewhere

Realistically though Seamus will be back soon sharing the limelight with Kane....

Coleman not back imminently. Kenny has done really well and was presumably just a bit tired at Bournemouth. No reason to think he won't be back in for the next few GWks - but also not a season keeper.

Lets wait till Seamus gets on the bench I'd say and worry then...like most returners...

I was on a -12 hit after having maximised the DGW assets. Also had Salah & Coutinho flags/Firmino rotation, and 3 Chelski players v Arsenal.
I'm now happy I instead Free Hit this week with only 4 teams being used & cheapest possible bench fodder.....

    Adrian*
    Cresswell*/Otamendi/Maguire(6)
    Arnie*/Alli*/Son*/Mahrez(14)/Sterling
    Kane(c)*/Kun
    (Pereira/Goldson/McBurnie/Mbemba)

How do people think this FH team will fare?

Hope so. Did you FH or bring the DGW assets in with FTs?

          Yeah I FH too.

Maguire and Mahrez like you 🙂

That's pretty impressive, I considered wildcard but didn't even think to put Mahrez in.

Could be in for a monster there chap.

I'm looking a bit like this:

      8 point hit

      Lloris
      Alonso - Masuaku - Maguire(6)
      Sterling - Richarlison - Lanzini - Son
      Kane(TC) - Morata - Firmino(1)

Safe to say, heavily relying on Kane returns lol.

Hope Kane hauls for us both 🙂

Love the posts BBC says Kane to play.

    Reality:
Lawro prediction comp comment [sic] "Surely he won't be denied chance to break record"

It's not even the BBC it's Lawrenson tipping vs celebrity comment which is allegedly ghost written anyway

does anyone actually still use the BBC

if you could buy a 'comedy website' in a joke shop it would pretty much look like the bbc

      DDG or Jones.

Wouldn’t touch any of the others - too much risk
