Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Lingard and Pogba Topple Toffees

Paul Pogba revives his Fantasy stock, though Jesse Lingard’s rapid ascent as a cut-price midfield option dominates proceedings as Manchester United ease through the gears to see off Everton.

Lingard’s sublime second strike for the visitors at Goodison means he now has seven goals and two assists from the last nine Gameweeks.

The reaction from Fantasy Premier League managers has been instant. Lingard is the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 23, with 42,000+ making the move. That has seen his price rise to 6.2 overnight, with a further rise looking likely prior to the next deadline.

Lingard had already proved a popular figure even before his effort on Merseyside.

He was signed by 94,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline and was second only to Roberto Firmino for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 21, claiming over 303,000 new owners.

It’s difficult to question the move for Lingard at present. Although shifted from a No 10 position to a role on the left at Goodison Park, he still managed to float into central areas and was only denied a second goal by a superb Jordan Pickford save.

Indeed, since cementing a run of starts from Gameweek 14 onwards, his total of 13 shots on target is matched only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders. He easily tops the United ranks for shots over that period and is also second only to Juan Mata for chances created.

That combined threat and creativity, coupled with a modest price tag, creates a very strong case for inclusion in our midfields at this time, even with competition so fierce.

And yet Pogba also used Monday’s match to highlight that he cannot be totally overlooked.

Restricted to just one penalty area touch in his three appearances since returning from suspension in Gameweek 19, Pogba was given more freedom to join the attack against Everton.

The inclusion of Ander Herrera in the starting line-up allowed Pogba to influence matters in attack and he had eight touches in the box, including two of his four shots on goal.

Pogba ended the match with two assists and a maximum bonus return to deliver a first double-figure score since Gameweek 12. However, he is still without a goal in seven starts.

The Frenchman was sold by 73,000+ ahead of Monday’s match, losing 69,000+ in net ownership over the last two Gameweeks.

The emergence of Lingard will do little to reverse that trend, though with an Old Trafford meeting with Stoke City up next, there is surely an incentive for his remaining 633,000+ manages to sit tight.

Trips to Burnley and Spurs then follow – both altogether more testing fixtures for United’s attack.

United Defence Back on Track

A run of just one clean sheet in seven was halted by the goalless draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21. With another clean sheet achieved at Everton, confidence in Jose Mourinho’s backline is being restored.

David De Gea continues to stretch out in front in the overall goalkeeper standings on 114 points, edging ahead of Burnley’s Nick Pope for points per match (5.2 vs 4.9).

Phil Jones – at 5.6 to De Gea’s 5.9 – is the alternative cover in the United defence.

Surprisingly, the centre-back started again for a sixth successive Gameweek, destroying the theory that he may struggle to chain appearances together over this festive period.

That should reassure us on his prospects from this point on, with a clean sheet against the Potters in Gameweek 24 on the cards.

Jones is currently the most signed defender ahead of Gameweek 24.

However, Mourinho’s new outlook on Luke Shaw also has to be considered. The left-back has now started and completed 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks.

Priced at just 4.9, if Shaw can show that he has cemented a starting role, there is no question that he is another asset to consider.

Concerns Mount for Calvert-Lewin

While United’s assets enjoyed a revival in Monday’s meeting, confidence in Everton as a source of Fantasy talent took a blow.

Wayne Rooney‘s recall to the starting XI failed to produce returns for a player now part of 922,000+ FPL squads. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was handed a rest with Oumar Niasse leading the Toffees attack.

Calvert-Lewin’s potential as a cut-price third or even second striker will come under scrutiny from this point. He has produced just a single goal in six Gameweeks and, with Sam Allardyce confirming a bid for Cenk Tosun, it’s clear that his role and minutes could soon be reduced.

Everton failed to register a shot on target against United, with Allardyce making it clear that the club is moving to address matters in attack.

“We know where our problems are, the club knew before I got here that was the problem. We’re trying to cure that in this window by getting a frontline that can threaten and score goals.”

In defence, Jonjoe Kenny was also handed a rest after struggling in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21. It remains to be seen if he is handed a recall over Mason Holgate at right-back for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool, with a visit to Spurs to follow in Gameweek 23.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Don’t understand the price changes today?
Why have spurs and West Ham players risen today after the DGW deadline?

Their threshold was doubled because of the DGW and when it returned to normal yesterday they were all above 100 %. Besides the deadline was yesterday and people had 10 hours to buy after Monday morning price changes.

Still all looks a bit fixed/wild to me. Adrian was 97% on Friday and still 97%. Kane bought by 500k doesn't rise, salah sold by 400k doesn't fall but maguire rises?

I was confused at first as well but it makes sense. A lot if the transfers were made in the morning yesterday as people were busy the evening before. So they got the players in prior to the dgw, but the rises didn't happen until after the game week was underway.

I looked at http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk/ newyears eef. A lot of risers back then, after the celebrations i was suprised to only see Son has risen. 'Insert Pun here'. I WC-ed and thought I needed to act quickly and got in Ota and Lingard etc. Also firmino and alli and eriksen looked like rising. None did, so i could have thinkered next morning. But maybe better i didn't 🙂

Already made that move last night to catch the price rise. Morata is sure to start scoring soon but their fixtures are virtually the same and they're both showing a lack of form but i think Aguero gets better service and plays in a more attacking team so surely he's likely to outscore Morata. Also i think Aguero on his day is one of the best strikers in the world and not having Morata against the likes of Brighton and Bournemouth is far less scary than the idea of what Aguero can do to Newcastle and West Brom.

Rojo is coming off an ACL, he's not going to be a consistent starter. Smalling was out due to injury, not form. He'll be back.

Doesn’t matter why he was out. The pattern I’ve noticed under Jose is that he likes continuity in defence. If your replacement does well then you’re stuck on the bench until there is a vacant spot. And when you get your chance again make sure you take it.

There’s no fixture pile up for United in January so ACL won’t be relevant. After this Friday they don’t play again until week on Monday.

Used my free hit after a little disaster. I used my 2 FT's to get in Kane and Son as planned.
Then late one night, I thought, 'hey, I've got a bit of spare cash, ill finally get rid of Goldson'. So I bought Maguire, bu then I noticed, I had just sold Zanka and not Goldson, so they he sat, still on my bench. So panic set in and I used my free hit to get rid of Coutinho and Salah for a week.
But what I'd forgotten was that now I will be back to square 1, no Kane, no Son and bloody Goldson, that little anal wart, will be back on my bench picking his nose and I'm left with 1 transfer to sort it all out.

Would like to hear your viewpoints on this topics:

    1) Really cant understand this downgrading of the defences and the midfields only to get Aguero next to Kane, especially when the top 6 defenders and midfs pay off so far

    2) As a fan of United I really hope Lindgard can have the previous season of Alli as someone said..but somehow I see him rotated soon and even Shaw can become more nailed (If he stays fit)

    3) Do you think 3-5-2 with Firmino Kane is the way to go currently

Lingard won't get rotated in this form. Only competition he has is Mkhi and Mata. One is rubbish and the other one is more suited for RW. At his price he is a no brainer. Outscoring Hazard despite less minutes played.

      1. Not downgrading either of those areas myself, no point for one player. Balance is key.
      2. If you get in Lingard now, its for a punt, if he gets benched, ah well, he won't be a main part a fpl midfield squad, well for now any way.
      3. Yes, but things change quickly.

    3. slove

      1. It's still possible to have a good midfield and defence even with an Aguero Kane partnership, i have the aguero and kane duo and i have Ota, Jones and Christensen as my starting defenders with a midfield of Sterling Salah Hazard and Richarlison. Granted i have Adrian Kenny Masuaku RLC and Calvert Lewin to make it happen but i feel theres enough good budget options to let you have those big hitters.

      2. I'm not sure Lingard will go on to do as well as Alli did, don't think rotation will be a huge factor but definitely see him finishing as one of the best value players and being a 7.5 mid next season so may as well take advantage of his value while you can.

3.Depends who your other players are in the 3-5-2 right now that seems to be the way to go but as soon as Morata or Aguero hits form or firming becomes deadwood then the whole template will shift again.

Wildcards and Free Hits don't count
And fpl stats / ff fix are basically guessing
For example, Lloris was -99/100 for 2 months on fpl stats because they forgot to reset him to zero after a flag

Two questions for those with insight:

    1) news on probable transfers? I'm tired of online click-bate articles

    2) what happens to players after transfers?
    a) if they leave the league, do you get a free transfer to ship them out? do they retain their last sell price?
    b) if they stay within a league, does their price change?
    c) if they stay within a league, you already own them, and they move to a team of which you already have 3 players, would you end up having 4? if that's the case, you might as well get 3 Southampton players, and end up with 6 liverpool players after the window.

(I read somewhere that you do, and that they can all play, but your next transfer would HAVE to be shipping out one of the 4)

    1. Carpe Diem
      • 7 Years

      2.
      a) no extra FT, yes they retain their sell price
      b) their price changes normally
      c) the next transfers you make would have to be shipping out one of the 4, yes.

On average how far ahead do you plan your transfers ? Short term i.e 1-2 weeks or do you have a long term plan in place ? I know things change with form/injuries etc so plans will evolve regardless but curious to know how managers map out their season.

This is a great point, people have just gone off Aguero because of the rotation which isn't a factor anymore. If Aguero stays fit he'll be second top pointscoring striker, well worth the extra million in my opinion, especially with their fixtures and the lack of rotation threat.

    9. ZimZalabim
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 3 months ago

everyone is talking about a lack of rotation threat with jesus injured which is fair but city have a game every three days for atleast the next month and aguero will not be able to play all these games and with jesus out it means sterling will most likely start as a striker in some of those games unless they sign someone very soon, im not sure who else could play up top but aguero will not be able to play that many games and we could only say he could miss the FA cup game this weekend but there is 2 legs of a league cup semi final to play as well before champions league re starts next month.
If aguero does play all league games then sterling might be starting the cup games as striker which would be disastrous or is there another option to play up top ?

Before this week OR 68k but TV only 102.1. I see many are around 105.
I used to jump on price rises but this year tend to wait closer to the deadline. Last year OR 1226 but think it will be tough to reach top 10k. Anyone in same boat?

Value won't really bite until end of season wc. But it isn't disastrous. You can still get the big players then just have to work a bit harder finding the value players.
My TV 105 but if I have to sell Salah & ota I'd lose a million of that.
Get the right players in and TV increase can be achieved without transfers. Gw14-16 mine rose 1.7m without a transfer.

A tempting differential definitely, If you have someone to rotate him with then why not

Had him for a few weeks after his Hattie and it was just awful! Better now he's getting game time with Defoe out.
