Scout Notes – Lingard and Pogba Topple Toffees

Paul Pogba revives his Fantasy stock, though Jesse Lingard’s rapid ascent as a cut-price midfield option dominates proceedings as Manchester United ease through the gears to see off Everton.

Lingard’s sublime second strike for the visitors at Goodison means he now has seven goals and two assists from the last nine Gameweeks.

The reaction from Fantasy Premier League managers has been instant. Lingard is the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 23, with 42,000+ making the move. That has seen his price rise to 6.2 overnight, with a further rise looking likely prior to the next deadline.

Lingard had already proved a popular figure even before his effort on Merseyside.

He was signed by 94,000+ ahead of Saturday’s deadline and was second only to Roberto Firmino for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 21, claiming over 303,000 new owners.

It’s difficult to question the move for Lingard at present. Although shifted from a No 10 position to a role on the left at Goodison Park, he still managed to float into central areas and was only denied a second goal by a superb Jordan Pickford save.

Indeed, since cementing a run of starts from Gameweek 14 onwards, his total of 13 shots on target is matched only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders. He easily tops the United ranks for shots over that period and is also second only to Juan Mata for chances created.

That combined threat and creativity, coupled with a modest price tag, creates a very strong case for inclusion in our midfields at this time, even with competition so fierce.

And yet Pogba also used Monday’s match to highlight that he cannot be totally overlooked.

Restricted to just one penalty area touch in his three appearances since returning from suspension in Gameweek 19, Pogba was given more freedom to join the attack against Everton.

The inclusion of Ander Herrera in the starting line-up allowed Pogba to influence matters in attack and he had eight touches in the box, including two of his four shots on goal.

Pogba ended the match with two assists and a maximum bonus return to deliver a first double-figure score since Gameweek 12. However, he is still without a goal in seven starts.

The Frenchman was sold by 73,000+ ahead of Monday’s match, losing 69,000+ in net ownership over the last two Gameweeks.

The emergence of Lingard will do little to reverse that trend, though with an Old Trafford meeting with Stoke City up next, there is surely an incentive for his remaining 633,000+ manages to sit tight.

Trips to Burnley and Spurs then follow – both altogether more testing fixtures for United’s attack.

United Defence Back on Track

A run of just one clean sheet in seven was halted by the goalless draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21. With another clean sheet achieved at Everton, confidence in Jose Mourinho’s backline is being restored.

David De Gea continues to stretch out in front in the overall goalkeeper standings on 114 points, edging ahead of Burnley’s Nick Pope for points per match (5.2 vs 4.9).

Phil Jones – at 5.6 to De Gea’s 5.9 – is the alternative cover in the United defence.

Surprisingly, the centre-back started again for a sixth successive Gameweek, destroying the theory that he may struggle to chain appearances together over this festive period.

That should reassure us on his prospects from this point on, with a clean sheet against the Potters in Gameweek 24 on the cards.

Jones is currently the most signed defender ahead of Gameweek 24.

However, Mourinho’s new outlook on Luke Shaw also has to be considered. The left-back has now started and completed 90 minutes in each of the last three Gameweeks.

Priced at just 4.9, if Shaw can show that he has cemented a starting role, there is no question that he is another asset to consider.

Concerns Mount for Calvert-Lewin

While United’s assets enjoyed a revival in Monday’s meeting, confidence in Everton as a source of Fantasy talent took a blow.

Wayne Rooney‘s recall to the starting XI failed to produce returns for a player now part of 922,000+ FPL squads. Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was handed a rest with Oumar Niasse leading the Toffees attack.

Calvert-Lewin’s potential as a cut-price third or even second striker will come under scrutiny from this point. He has produced just a single goal in six Gameweeks and, with Sam Allardyce confirming a bid for Cenk Tosun, it’s clear that his role and minutes could soon be reduced.

Everton failed to register a shot on target against United, with Allardyce making it clear that the club is moving to address matters in attack.

“We know where our problems are, the club knew before I got here that was the problem. We’re trying to cure that in this window by getting a frontline that can threaten and score goals.”

In defence, Jonjoe Kenny was also handed a rest after struggling in the 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21. It remains to be seen if he is handed a recall over Mason Holgate at right-back for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool, with a visit to Spurs to follow in Gameweek 23.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Coutinho,KDB or Hazard > Lingard?

Take 2 of the 3 out for -4?

Assuming fit and playing, I wouldn't sell any for Lingard.

Have Hazard & KDB and depending on news and form, I'm thinking of doing - Hazard > Son/Eriksen and/or KDB > Pogba / Silva

Looking to get aguero in with Jesus out for the foreseeable.

          Current: Kane, firminho, Rooney.

Thinking firminho & Rooney to aguero and 4.9 (suggestions welcome would be bench fodder).

          At present

          De gea (Elliot)
          Jones otamendi Christensen (masuaku ogbonna)
          Salah sterling son richarlison (Carrol)
          Kane firminho Rooney

Worthwhile? This would be for -4 hit.

Probably best waiting for Salah injury news. Otherwise think I'd hold for a week b/c Firmino has good fixture and you'd be paying -4 to field Carrol or Whu defender.

With 19pts sat on my bench from Murray and Klavan yes I’m kind of fearing my XI may not score well.

7pts from Maguire + Duffy with technically 15 players to go which include...

Adrian, Otamendi, Sterling, Eriksen, Alli, Arnautovic, Lanzini, Kane(c) & Aguero.

Should be big points but as always with FPL I fear the worst.

After a streak of 18 green arrow, my team of 9 field players coupled with captain Morata reluctant to score against Stoke got me a red arrow. Kane TC activated because he is the best striker with form and fixtures but still there is a doubt what if Morata like situation happens again, what if?

Kane may be a bit weak after his illness, if he actually plays against Swansea he and the Spurs players will get home at 3am earliest, no proper post game recovery, won’t train on Wednesday (just a get together) .... there may well be better DGW options in the future

Got the exact cash to go Duffy to Shaw and improve my bench. Would then play 4-5-1 for the foreseeable future, really tired of the budget strikers. If he doesn't play, I have solid enough bench.

Masuaku, playing higher up the pitch, could have had a couple assists by now and outscoring Ogbonna in the bonus lately unlike what Athletico Timbo says (no offence though haha), was leaning towards Ogbonna as well for the bonus reasons but in the last 2 or 3, Masuaku outscored him

Takes too long to load page 6. Like 20-30 seconds at then it directs me to a random reply on that page and not the one I clicked on. No issue on page 7 or the new article so the root of the problem is probably too many replies on page 6.

Ive still captained him, but I was honestly too worried that he wouldn't play one of the games. Now I admit I'm concerned that I didn't triple captain based on assumptions that he will play both. Happy for points if he gets some and you can only commend his tcers for taking a risk if it pays off.

Alternatively .., Kane may be a bit weak after his illness, if he actually plays against Swansea he and the Spurs players will get home at 3am earliest, no proper post game recovery, won’t train on Wednesday (just a get together) .... there may well be better DGW options in the future

Every one will be tired, but WHU are at home - Spurs have a 200 mime 4 1/2 hour coach ride after the game.

We have seen City and Pool rotating their players, not sure why people think Spurs and Kane are immune to rotation over a tighter schedule ?

TC/BB for later DGWs. This week looked to be good for Kane TC, but man flu and two games in three days ought to blunt the impact slightly.

              For GW23:

              Salah Sterling Erikson Son Carroll

For those who have had Salah since week one... we can survive a hit without any loss of sell value (9.5 with TV at 10.1)

I have him, but captained Alli instead. It would be entertaining if Kane is benched. Not sure if I want it to happen though.

I could do with some help.
Playing my wildcard as of last night try and create value, capture those likely to have a double price rise which then can give me maximum value to finalise a team before the next game week starts. Any ideas on who's price is likely to rise twice in that time or drop twice creating a bargain?

Lingard, maybe Kun. Lots of people use the WC in a two-week break, but the flipside is (I think) that players transferred on a wild card don't count towards any rise/fall in price.

                  Ok thanks both.

                  Current team is:
                  Ederson/Elliot
                  Alonso Jones Maguire Ogbonna Dunk
                  Sterling Salah Lingard Son TCarrol
                  Kun Kane McBurnie
                  0.1 ITB

Am I missing a trick anywhere?

I'm pretty sure if you play your wildcard and a player falls in value after you bring them in then you have less team value to work with if you make any future transfers in that wildcard as you'll get less money for the transfer

Yea that's right. I had Gross but think he is going drop so swapped him for lingard. If he drops once or even twice, I might buy him back at the cheaper price just before the deadline and pocket the cash.

Thinking of ditching Calvert Lewin for Quaner, which would give me 2.1 ITB , is that better spent upgrading RLC to Gross or Kenny to Bellerin

Currently have Jones Ota Christensen in defence and Lingard Mahrez Sterling and Salah in midfield.

Not sure what the best use of cash is, any help available ?

I have Kane as (C), and Arnie as (VC).

What happens if Kane is rested tonight, but plays on Thursday?

Does tonight's Capt default over to Arnie and then revert back to Kane if he plays Thursday?

What do u think about this hit !?
              Sané + Masuako > Out
              Pogba + Stones > In
              For (-4)
              So ... !?
