Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pogba outguns Lingard

A superb Paul Pogba display drove Manchester United to three points against struggling Stoke City at Old Trafford, as Jesse Lingard failed to live up to the pre-match hype.

Lingard went into Gameweek 23 as the most signed player, with over 567,000 managers swooping in a bid to capitalise on an obliging home fixture against the Potters. Some 103,000 owners also trusted him with the captaincy.

Now priced at 6.4, Lingard had produced seven goals in nine Gameweeks prior to last night. But he suffered a frustrating evening, notable only for a single shot on goal and a second booking of the season to supply just two points for his expectant new owners.

He was eventually hooked on 79 minutes and has now returned points in just one of his last five home matches in the Premier League – the brace against Burnley in Gameweek 20 when introduced from the bench at half-time.

While Lingard struggled, he was surrounded by team-mates and notable Fantasy rivals that flourished.

Pogba, in particular, was outstanding.

With Ander Herrera dropping to the bench, it appeared that Pogba was to take up a deeper role alongside Nemanja Matic. However, he was given the license to roam forward and put on an imperious display, littered with accurate cross-field passes and punctuated with two more assists for United’s opening goals.

That followed his brace of assists in the Gameweek 22 victory at Everton, taking Pogba to 11 for the season, level with Kevin De Bruyne.

The player himself brought us this, post-match, on his role on the night…

“I have been more forward, so I have more freedom to go forward and have a positive influence.

I can use more of my ability, my attributes to go forward, use my power, to shoot and to get assists, so it suits me more I would say.”

Pogba did, however, muster just two shots on goal – one of those a late free-kick from range. Indeed, it seems dangerous to judge him in that role based on a home fixture with Stoke. The next two matches at Burnley and, in particular, Spurs, will tell us more on Pogba’s attacking impact should he continue alongside Matic.

Nonetheless, last night’s double-digit return took the Frenchman to 6.6 points per match (ppm), third among FPL midfielders.

Antony Martial offered more in terms of goal threat on Monday night, recording six shots in total. He converted one of those efforts to produce a second successive double-digit score.

An injury doubt heading into the contest, it was notable that Jose Mourinho elected to turn to Martial over Marcus Rashford once again. He repaid that faith with an eighth goal of the season, although he remains more of a risk as an investment having started just three of the last six Gameweeks.

Romelu Lukaku also made a return to the starting line-up to make his mark.

A strong all-round display was rewarded with a third goal in his last five starts or fourth in six in all competitions.

The Belgian has lost over 613,000 owners in the last four Gameweeks – a decline accelerated by a head injury which saw him miss the Goodison Park win. However, he is now beginning to hint at a level of consistency which could yet see his Fantasy stock revived.

Valencia thrives in United shut-out

United claimed a third successive clean sheet to move to 13 for the season, more than any other side.

Mourinho was able to welcome back skipper Antonio Valencia from a hamstring injury for the first time in five Gameweeks, as Victor Lindelof gave way at right-back. The Ecuadorian had lost over 531,000 owners since his previous Premier League appearance back in Gameweek 18.

But Valencia made an instant impact on his return, firing a third goal of the season. It marked the first time that he has scored more than two goals in a season since the 2011/12 campaign.

With maximum bonus also accrued, he delivered a second 15-point haul of the season to move to two points behind Nicolas Otamendi among FPL defenders.

Elsewhere, Chris Smalling also earned a recall having seemingly slipped behind Marcos Rojo in the pecking order to partner Phil Jones. But Rojo also dropped to the bench as Mourinho made two changes to his back four. Luke Shaw retained his start, though with Ashley Young serving out his suspension, his berth at Burnley will come under threat.

In truth, United were fortunate to escape with the clean sheet: they handed Stoke three big chances on the night. But a combination of the visitors’ profligacy and David De Gea’s brilliance, kept them out.

De Gea went into Monday’s contest with the Premier League’s highest save percentage (83%) but with just one save point from his last four outings. However, when the Potters did get an effort on target, they found De Gea a more than capable last line of defence. He is now 22 points ahead of his nearest goalkeeping rival in the FPL standings.

Sanchez deal imminent?

Off the pitch, United’s pursuit of Alexis Sanchez may just have taken a new twist.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was omitted from the United squad, this despite Mourinho’s statement in his pre-match press conference.

”He is our player. He’s a very good player. Saturday he is training, Sunday selected and Monday play.”

Intriguingly, the manager was to reveal that the decision to omit the Armenia was down to renewed speculation surrounding the player’s future.

“I would lie if I said it was a pure tactical decision….I don’t think it’s easy for a player to play when there are doubts about his future. It’s added pressure that a player doesn’t need, so I think it’s the best for him and for us, while the doubt is in the air, to protect him”

That inevitably led to increased speculation that Mkhitaryan could possibly be included as part of a package that brings Sanchez to Old Trafford.

Further fuel was added to the fire with the news that Manchester City had withdrawn from the race for the Chilean.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Team is a mess, I'm not sure what to do:

    Adrian/Speroni
    Azpi, Otamendi, Jones, Masuaku, Dunk
    Salah, Sterling, Alli, Lingard, RLC
    Kane, Morata, DCL

Who should I get? Arnie, Son, Firmino, Kun, Pogba?

It was a bad move as Arnie was revealed to be fit and ready to go by Friday. If the move was made prior to that then that shows the dangers of making early transfers.

If Arnie was still a doubt Friday then it is very sensible, but that wasn't the case.

Had a very jammy week. played wildcard for the double gameweek, made modest gains. This week the wildcard finally paid off with Eriksen, Son, Arnautovic, Lanzini and Kane (c) propelling me to almost 100 points. Only low point was my double Brighton defence of Ryan and Dunk...

Smooth this week - had Wilson, Pogba, Lanzini, Eriksen, Salah, and Kane (c) - overall 100 points.

Rose 360k in the rankings with a gameweek rank of just over 8000.

Smooth - 88 gameweek score, season high rank of 160. Kane County, Arnie, Salah, Firmino and defenders returning well.

Rough. Have successfully resisted a number of disappointing bandwagons but think I've been suckered this time... Bought in Lingard for Lanzini. Would have been into top 100 without that. Now stuck with a player I don't really fancy, but will give him time. Christensen one pointer softened by only having Dunks 1pt to sub in for him.

Rough: Captain Lingard. A folly. Christensen missing out on clean sheet by 3 minutes. Hazard being abysmal, he was a nice differential last week which earnt him a stay of execution but he's gone now.

Rest of my team was fine really, problem was the entire template team performing - a team I can't afford. If the template continues to fire I'm just going to slip further and further behind until the blanks and DGW's arrive. A creative solution may need to be found!

Rough - Lingard C, Sterling and Richarlison disappointing (again for the latter...)

Smooth - Kane, Salah, Arnautovic did very well, as well as my defence (Foster 7, Alonso 8, Jones 6, Davies 6). 79, which is ok, but very bitter I haven't captained Kane or Salah... This is the type of differential decision you kinda force yourself to make when you had a bad start of the season and are chasing in your private league, I guess.

Smooth: Took a hit, and sold Alli for Arnie (instead of Lingard), and sold Daniels for Alonso (benching Masuaku's 2 points). 11 points gained (assuming I'd have captained Eriksen instead of Alonso).

Rough: Not too bad, but captaining Alonso over Erkisen and Arnie, which was a really close call, lost me 2-16 points. No Kane in my team meant that a great week became only a slight gain from 175k to 149k with 75pts after the hit.

Smooth: Took a 4 point hit & removed Christensen & Morata for Alonso & Firmino, giving me a 10 point swing.

Also got captaincy returns from Kane, & both Son & Arnautovic delivered, contributing to a score of 88 including hit.

Rough: Otamendi's minus & Lingard's disappointment were the only blemishes on a great week.

A pretty smooth week all along: Starting with Arnautovic, then Son, then Salah/Firmino and finally Pogba (C) to end 4 short of 100.

First time all 7 front men got me returns this season!

Brought Alonso in for hit as didn't have cash without downgrading elsewhere. Captained him as don't trust Kane. VC was Arnie and also have Son. Only thing that let me down were lack of CS for West Ham (have Adrian and Ogbonna) and Sterling getting me 1 point and city costing me bonus for Firmino. Still 98(-4) rose me over 100k places.

When it comes to rough with the smooth we always say it’s what you do which is relevant but in my case it’s patience that ended up paying off. I was really tempted to jump onto the Lingard wagon and contemplated transferring out one of Son, Pogba or Arnautovic. I saved the transfer in the end and got double digit returns from all my potential fall-out guys. Holding onto Pogba through his 3 blanks has paid off with with 23pts in the last two.

97 points overall (Kane(c), Salah, Firmino the other major source of points) and a jump from 105K to 45K in OR. I had fallen down to 160K after taking the gamble with #Kanexit and missing out on his 2 hat-tricks so it’s good to get back on track.

Thankfully more smooth than rough this week with 88 points to move me up almost 300K spots (still at 911K, but clawing back up).
      - Smooth: brought in Alonso and J-Ayew for Christensen and Calvert-Lewin for a hit that paid off. Also a last-minute move from Lingard (c) to Kane (c) was the right call.
      - Rough: Morata (again)... he's getting the boot this week.

        1) Have Bournemouth very quietly become the most attacking team in the league?

        2) Who has posted the better xG and xA stats in the last 4 Gameweeks ... Wilson or Firmino?

        3) Will Liverpool's attack be just as potent against a team that defends deep and concedes possession?

        4) What transfer dominoes should fantasy managers look out for after Sanchez moves?

How to break the template (or slight variation of) of-

        Salah Sterling Son Lingard Arnie

          Alonso a must
          Ota can downgrade
          Jones reliable for the money.
          Salah a must
          Sterling there are other choices.
Son fixture coming up not so good. Lingard price great for returns
Arnie great when playing up front.
Kane can be swapped out for a gamble by C salah
Firmino only real choice at the price.

Look at Lanzini, Ramsey, Mahrez to be a little different

West Ham rate extremely well on the fixture ticker. Can Moyes’ West Ham sustain their attacking form? Is a Lanzini / Arnie double up a viable option going forward?

        1) We NEED to talk about the second striker spot. Firmino seems to be the template but is there a argument for getting Wilson or Vardy, both huge differentials in the top 10k? Especially if we already have Salah presumably and are captaining him or Kane every week.

        2) With the regression of Pope, who are the top GK picks until the 2nd WC/end of the season? Do we fork over the cash for DDG, go "cheap" with Pickford or find middle ground in Courtois?

        Thanks Jonty and co.

          This.

Have Kane but unsure who to have as second striker.

Morata, Lukaku and Lacazette are a no.

It's looking like Firmino, Vardy or going dirt cheap.

If I had Morata I’d be finding money to go Aguero.

I have DCL and Depoitre so I won’t be ripping up my midfield of Sterling, Salah, Son, Arnie and Lingard to get him in.

I just don’t think Aguero is anywhere near worth ripping my team up or ditching Kane like many have suggested.

Keepers - does DDG prove picking a premium for the season and sticking, so no need to use up any transfers, has really been the best strategy ?

Or talk about the first striker spot.

If you're captaining Salah, I think you can afford to let Kane go during his less favourable fixtures. Hence I have a frontline of Firmino, Wilson and DCL (3rd sub).

But you could consider Firmino-Vardy-Wilson since you seem to appreciate Vardy's value too. I think this is better value whilst Salah is a great captaincy option.

I know this is an unpopular view, but worth consideration imo 🙂

"It makes sense to utilise the "boomerang" aspect of the Free Hit chip:

        FH in BGW 35,

        Or
        Prepare for the Blanks,

Boomerang back to your Blank team ahead of BGW 35, WC in GW36"

We know that City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd are potentially affected, but the mid-week after the Carabao Cup Final is clear (apart from potential FA Cup replays), so should we temper our advance planning until this is clarified? Where do you think Sanchez will be better for FPL? United or City?
In City I think he would give us a lot of points simply because one of the best PL players would play for best or second best (behind Lpool) attacking team in the league. But the problem is rotation. I think he would play at left winger and Sane is playing very good. Sanchez is better player, but Sane is young and potential to be one of the best wingers in the future, so Pep will give him a lot of playing time for sure.
And in my opinion Sane fits better on left wing, because there is no Mendy and Delph is playing inverted fullback. So they need width od that flank and Sane is more natural winger, more closer to the touchline and Sanchez is inside forward, cutting inside more.
United is not so good attacking team, but here he would be more nailed i think. Martial and Rasford can play on left wing but Alexis is clearly much better player and Mourinho is always looking for the quality so I think he wouldn't really care if two young prospects are on the bench.
So where do you want Sanchez to go (just from FPL perpective)? I want him to go to United, just because of less rotation risk.

Sanchez would be pretty good (obvs) out wide but I think he would be immense in the 'Lingard' role last night and I'd almost definitely get him in that case

I agree. In that Lingard role, with Pogba behind him, maybe Mata on right side with good delivery and Lukaku up front to hold the ball and bring them near box he would be absolute beast. I think he would be near Salah level.

You vet often talk about individuall players, and this is both understandable and very amusing. But FPL is about combining your budget to get maximum points, so here is a question i think many would appriciate your opinion on.

With lets say a combined budget in midfield on aprox 15,5m which of the following duos would you consider in the weeks to come:
        KDB and Ibe?
        Pogba and Ox?
        Mahrez and Lingard?
        Son and Lingard?
        Pogba and Richarlison?

As you can see there are many opportunities here, and perhaps you can come up with som duos yourselves. Much appriciatet thx.

How has the game changed in recent years with the change in the price rises/decreases? 3 or 4 seasons ago I would play the first half of the season mainly based around building team value, jumping on bandwagons to aim for a Jan wildcard value of at least 110m. It's clear that value change has slowed dramatically and is much harder to predict therefore team value is much less relevant, meaning even unsavvy managers (casuals) can often build the template teams with ease. Has it changed the skillset needed to succeed or the way the game needs to be played.

Can we please talk about United in general? Their ownership is so high across the game, any returns from their players are like +6pts to the average (eg average jumped by 13pts yesterday!) Do we have to have a MINIMUM of one united asset but most likely at least 1def + pogba/lingard?

Situations like this and so many different players performing across the game in general make it so hard to make big rank jumps as it seems like no matter who you have in your team, most weeks people end up with very similar scores anyway! The template is so strong that there just don't seem to be any differentials worth investing in :/

But with regards to that any suggestions as to what to do to move up the ranks in next few weeks?

If you have both and successfully rotate the C between them and catch the Kane bigger hauls, then you can really do much better than just sticking with Kane ‘or’ Salah

I brought in Lingard for the Stoke game and he flopped.. I'm know I'm being an idiot for thinking about ditching him already - his price reflects the fact that he's not going to deliver every week - but seriously, is it time to ditch Lingard? Next game is Burnley away and it'll be tough to score, then it's Spurs away... hardly easy games. In the meantime there's an Arnautovic shaped hole in my team (which balances against the Alonso hole)

Is there an Alexis plan? If so, is he worth bringing in if he goes to United? Mourinho is probably more likely to play him as a winger where he's less effective. To Chelsea? Think it might be the same problem as at United and don't see him replacing Morata as the main striker. Liverpool can't afford his wages but if they could, I guess he could be an option.

City were the ones I were waiting on before they withdraw (presumably because Jesus is coming back in 2 weeks according to the club and they are no longer so desperate). He would have played up front...

Question for Andy. Son- will you risk him at away game or is it better to remove him now and get him back after his bad run of fixtures. Alternatively, are you keeping him?

There's a clear template at play. 90% of my ML has 80% players the same, and everybody is having the same GW scores, resulting in not much movement, is there any hope for differentials or are we stuck with the same teams till the end of the season??

          4-5-1 a realistic option now?
What kind of defense is suitable for a 4-5-1?

          Keep Eriksen or Alli?

          Thanks.

Balance between having differentials to move up the ranks and holding high ownership on form players. Where do the Scoutcast team stand on this? This seems to be a key issue at the moment. Do a stock take of your squad and if yours is the same as everyone elses (moreover) above you then you will tread water for weeks. I hold the league positions for last season for my team and I think I spent 2 to 3 months post Christmas just floating around the same sort of rank. This was due in most part to having a similar team to everyone else.
This season who are going to be your true differentials which don't add too much risk to your squad. For me its really only Kun but he will be my captain for the next 2 gameweeks so I'm magnifying the chance of him helping me move up the ranks.

Should we be looking at Jordon Ibe?

Looking at the Performance Score of all the the players on squawka.com since December 28th, Jordon Ibe is ranked no.1. His ownership is 0.5% so would make a great differential, his price looks a bargain at £4.8m and his fixtures in the next 10 weeks are, in the main, reasonable:

          West Ham away
          Chelsea away
          Stoke at home
          Huddersfield away
          Newcastle at home
          Leicester away
          Spurs at home
          West Brom at home
          Watford away
          Crystal Palace at home

I will be transfering him in this week for Richarlison who is ranked 338 out of 349 in the same period and it would allow me to do Son to Arnautovic and Loftus-Cheek to Lanzini next week for free.

The rankings shouldn't always be used for FPL purposes because Eric Dier is ranked 19th and N'Golo Kante is 35th, but it gives you a good idea who to bring in and transfer out.

          Scource: http://www.squawka.com/football-player-rankings#performance-score#player-stats#english-premier-league|season-2017/2018#all-teams#all-player-positions#16#39#0#0#90#28/12/2017#31/05/2018#season#1#all-matches#total#desc#total

How do we choose the optimal midfield? There is an abundance of valid options in midfield and many at each price point. This should give us flexibility in where we invest our money. Analysing prospective WC teams to help assess the options, I see 7+ potential "templates that are attractive and relatively distinct, driven by a broad range of options in midfield, and it's hard to choose the best one. Are stats key to unlocking value?

It seems that everyone is targeting the same defenders (Alonso / Azpi /Jones /Ota) and forwards (Kane / Firmino / Aguero) due to consistency of returns and club form, and as a result this has potentially led many of us to the same midfield budgets and selections.

          1) Aguero vs. Firmino (and funds to spread around) as second striker (after Kane)
          2) When Ward and other injuries are behind them, will Burnley's defense return to the earlier source of reliable clean sheets?

What are people saying thoughts on cheapie 5th mind in 4-5-1?
        Have held Gross for far to long now;

Chamberlain: Good fixtures in a high scoring team just worried about rotation; or is he front runner to Cout old spot?

Ibe: Playing high up the field and produced an assist & goal in last 2. Again decent short term fixtures but is he nailed?

Iwobi: head says Arsenal are team to avoid but with Sanchez out Iwobi could offer cheap route into Arsenal attack (At 1.8m cheaper than Ramsey)

Lingard: Produced amazing value recently but feel it's chasing point as fixtures stiffen.

Lanzini: best fixtures and decent form, but is double up with Arnie too many eggs in a unreliable West Ham basket?

Have moved up from 1.0m OR to 50k OR since GW15 with only green arrows so things are good but wondering if you think anything worth tinkering with in this team?:

        0FT £0.2itb TV £105.1m

        DDG, Elliot
        Alonso, Otamendi, Ogbonna, Tomkins, Duffy
        Salah, Sterling, Son, Lingard, Arnie
        Kane, Firmino, Ayew

I would plan to play 3-5-2 choosing between Ogbonna/ Tomkins/ Duffy depending on the fixtures.

        Anything needed?

Best defender for 5.1m or less?

        Ota / Duffy / Christensen / Masuaku / XXX

5.1 is very tough territory for defender, either 4.5 or 5.5

        Torn between:

        A) Morata > Firmino
