The Digest – Gameweek 23

Our coverage of Gameweek 23 concludes this evening as we take a look at the key player, the team and the talking point to draw our attention from the latest round of matches.

Marko Arnautovic continues to profit from his recent move up front for West Ham. Liverpool put four past Manchester City in their first match without Philippe Coutinho, while the steady firming up of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) template squad appears to have accelerated, urging us to seek out alternatives.

The Player

Marko Arnautovic more than atoned for a disappointing double Gameweek 22.

After shrugging off a hamstring niggle, the Austrian delivered a goal and two assists in West Ham’s 4-1 win at Huddersfield to end Gameweek 23 as the top scoring player on 16 points.

That proved a chastening experience for the 114,000 owners who chose to part company before the Hammers’ head-to-head with David Wagner’s side.

Prior to his Gameweek 22 encounters with West Brom and Spurs, Arnautovic was one of the hottest properties around – having netted five times in as many appearances over Gameweek 16-20, he was drafted in by over 368,000 FPL managers.

But injury ruled him out of the trip to Wembley, leaving him with just five points over Gameweek 22, thanks to an assist for Andy Carroll’s late winner against the Baggies.

As evidenced on Saturday, Arnautovic’s out-of-position potential under David Moyes grows steadily by the Gameweek.

The underlying statistics also back up his claim.

Since netting his first of the season against Chelsea in Gameweek 16, he’s ranked fifth for both shots in the box (16) and efforts on target (nine) among midfielders.

Arnautovic has fired six goals across that stretch – that’s equal to Mohamed Salah and second only to Harry Kane’s 10.

With a home encounter against Bournemouth up next, he leads the way for new owners – over 146,000 have already recruited him since Saturday’s deadline.

The short-term schedule continues to smile kindly – over the next six, West Ham also host Crystal Palace and Watford and travel to Brighton and Swansea.

At the cost of just 7.0 in FPL, Arnautovic’s current form suggests that he could even remain a key figure in our squads when the fixtures turn against Moyes’ men in Gameweek 30.

And judging by his manager’s recent comments, we can expect the Austrian to remain in his new central role from this point onwards:

“When you play out wide, you might not get enough of the ball, so I actually think that we’ve given him a chance to get on the ball, to get more of the ball.
“He’s a big man to get the ball off as well, he’s got speed, he’s got power, so we’re trying to give him the ball as often as we can.

The Team

If there were fears over their Fantasy potential in light of Philippe Coutinho’s switch to Barcelona, Liverpool took a huge stride towards putting them to rest on Sunday afternoon.

A 4-3 win over Man City ended the league leaders’ unbeaten start to the domestic season and hands Jurgen Klopp’s men momentum ahead of a very encouraging run-in to 2017/18.

Indeed, between now and the end of the campaign, the Reds face just three of the current top eight sides – at home to Spurs in Gameweek 26, along with trips to Manchester United and Chelsea in Gameweeks 30 and 37 respectively.

From front to back, investment in Klopp’s side looks a wise move.

Salah’s goal and assist against Pep Guardiola’s team – his tenth double-figure haul of the campaign – was matched by Roberto Firmino, who climbed to second behind Kane in the FPL forward standings.

And Sadio Mane made it a clean sweep of goals from the Reds’ front three – he has now returned points in three successive Gameweeks.

Yet it was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal and assist that could bring him to the fore as a potential budget gem at just 5.6.

Granted, his pitch-time is still unclear – only eight of his 20 appearances since arriving from Arsenal were in the first XI. However, he’s now been named on the teamsheet in three of the last four Gameweeks, bagging 28 points.

At the back, the premium-priced Virgil van Dijk’s (5.5) aerial threat should profit the Reds in both boxes.

Expected to recover from a hamstring complaint for Monday’s trip to Swansea, the Dutchman arguably looks the only secure route into a defence that, prior to the weekend, had the best home defensive record in the league.

Elsewhere in their rearguard, Andrew Robertson (4.7) and Loris Karius (4.8) could offer cheaper options to the expensive Van Dijk if they can cement regular berths.

But a double or even triple-up on their attack – providing Oxlade-Chamberlain nails down a starting role – could end up being the preferred strategy, though much depends on the severity of Klopp’s rotation policy once the Champions League resumes next month.

The Talking Point

The output of budget-friendly players such as Arnautovic has triggered the gradual evolution of a template FPL squad in recent weeks.

With the Austrian and Jesse Lingard offering mid-price value in the centre of the park, funds have been freed up to acquire the seemingly near-essential Marcos Alonso at the back.

Factor in the growing popularity of Son Heung-min and Firmino, along with mainstays such as Kane, Salah and Raheem Sterling, and suddenly there’s a very similar look to many of our line-ups.

Those managers chasing down leads in mini-leagues face a dilemma – do they keep faith with this template or look for ways of breaking it in an attempt to make up ground?

Looking at the short-term fixtures can help.

The recent injury to Gabriel Jesus means that, suddenly, Sergio Aguero is a far more appealing option for back-to-back home encounters with Newcastle and West Brom. Undoubtedly, he is one of the main captain candidates for this weekend.

Leicester’s upcoming batch of home matches – (WAT SWA STK BOU) in the next six Gameweeks – now brings Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy into the picture as potential alternatives for the likes of Son and Firmino.

Elsewhere, Arnautovic’s team-mate Manuel Lanzini and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson have the form and fixtures as low-owned differentials.

And there’s also the January transfer window to help smash the currently accepted options.

Everton have already added Cenk Tosun to their ranks and are closing in on a deal for Theo Walcott ahead of three promising fixtures in four (WBA LEI CRY).

Alexis Sanchez’s apparent move to Man United could potentially bring last season’s top scoring FPL player back into the frame after a disappointing start to the season at Arsenal.

But if current press stories are anything to go by, it’s the Gunners themselves who could offer the most intriguing options as Wenger looks to restructure in light of the Chilean’s impending departure.

Not only is he looking to bring Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the Emirates as part of the Sanchez swap, the Arsenal manager’s mooted moves for Dortmund frontman Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Bordeaux’s highly-rated Malcolm could help enliven Fantasy managers’ options in the final third.

    Play:
    A) Jordan Ayew (has Liverpool at Home, could score again)
    B) Gomez (Swansea away, but may not start again)
    C) gundogan (possibly could start and deliver again)
Currently have team on C with:
    DDG
    Jones Azpi Ota
    Salah sterling Arnie lingard gundogan*
    Kane firmino

    Elliot JAyew Gomez mee

all your options seem more hopeful than anticipatory.

I'd play C and hope Silva doesn't start.

If you're not going to start Gundogan against Newcastle at home, then why do you own him?

I actually don't think he'll start though, but if he does then I could see some points coming his way.

Ignoring Gundogan, I'd play Gomez and be fairly confident that if he doesn't start, he probably won't come on

    Courtois
    Jones - Ota - Alo
    Salah - Lingard - Son - Arnau - Sterling
    Kane - Firm

    Krul - Depoitre - Masuaku - Mariappa

2FTs. 0.6 itb. Looks like for the first time i'll be losing/surrendering a free transfer as i don't want to make a transfer for the sake of it and i don't want to upgrade to a more expensive bench.

Any thoughts? Son > Sane worth considering? How long do we want to keep Lingard?

You can look to downgrade depoitre to mcburnie crouch or quaner. Or Krul to playing goal keeper as Chelsea might blank in gw 28. Your 3 defenders might blank in Gw 28. So you can get a playing defender instead of mariappa.

Liking the look of my team this week and I've already used my FT to bring in Firminho for Morata, so no need to make any transfers. But it feels wrong having so much cash in the bank when so many easy upgrades could be made for this week....

    -----------Adrian
    Ota - Jones - Gomez - Christen
    Salah[v]- Sterling - Son - Lingard
    --------Kane[c]- Firminho
    Bench: Elliot==Masuaku - DCL - RLC
    4.2 ITB & No frees
I'm not against a hit if it's a long term move, but in this case I just think the team [and Masu ready to come on] is looking fine. So should I...

    A] Save. No hit
    B] Christen > Alonso
C] RLC > Arnie [bench Gomez this GW]
D] RLC > Mahrez [bench Gomez]
    E] Something else

Fix Austin or Richarlison first? Richarlison will surely drop this week, so it's more tempting to get a 6.6 mid in (0.2 itb). Also lets me wait and see if Ings, Niasse or someone else in that cheap fwd price bracket is transferred.

    Morning lads,
Eriksen was playing very deep last few games, and tbh he was lucky to get goals, except shots outside the box. Anyway I need to drop him before 3 reds. So should I replace Eriksen with:
    a) KDB (good fixtures, but will he be explosive against Newcastle?)
    b) Mahrez (if he stays)
    c) Shaqiri (and maybe upgrade Wilson to Firm for -4)
    d) save ft and play him against Soton

Like the last goal he scored from in front of the goal inside the box from Alli's flickon? Plus he takes most deadball sits. I would leave him for Soton then think about changing him - maybe for Mahrez. Shaqiri's a great player, but his team are horrible atm.

They were unlucky to get more than a goal in 1st game actually, and they could award their fans with a bigger score after a loss, so it's tempting to cap Sterling. But Salah is a safer option.

So been doing a bit of old blank 28 planning.
Feel like Mahrez, Maguire and Wilson the way to go.

Planning these 3 moves over the next few weeks that would ensure 11 players with decent fixtures in 28 no matter what happens.
My concern is holding Son through some very bad fixtures.
Let me know what you think please.

    Moves are
    Ogbonna , Lingard Quaner to
    Maguire, Carroll !!!!, Wilson
    To give

    Pope Pereira

    Alonso Otamendi Maguire Kenny Dunk

    Salah Sterling Mahrez Son Carroll

    Kane Firminio Wilson

See that what I get for the statement like " no matter what happens"
Not sure but have time to make another transfer to sort out anything like that.
Thanks I will consider losing him over Ogbonna. WH just not keeping CS and don't like the 28 fixture hence the logic to lose him.

Overall what you think of the plan?
Or other moves I should consider instead?

What are Aguero owners doing. Surely u have to back him to outscore Salah and Kane this week or whats the point in owning him

He is a differential in my pivate league. If he does well, it’s ok, it’s enough.

Im not confident he will outscore Kane or Salah this weekend so why should I captain him?

I have him, not gonna take a hit to get rid.

What is a better fixture for Aguero than Newcastle (home) and whats the point in having not even able to cap him for that plum fixture. With city in rage after a defeat

Swansea and Soton being at home wont think abt frustrating their opponent as much as Newcastle will. If City scores early it gets bloody, if it stays 0-0 for 50-60 mins City might only win 1 or 2-0.

I may well have him as my second striker in a 352. Great value and will tick along with goals and the odd haul over these juicy fixtures.

I think many people still have DCL and WHU defender, which one you play this week? Currently on Ogbonna to play but not sure Wilson stop scoring

I have Oggy too by Bournemouth will score. The West Ham defence was an illusion and I wish I hadn't bothered.

A just a pain if you are .1 short on Maguire as that defender.

I don't know why you would do B if you have Kun already give him a shot at the next 2 fixtures.

I'm not a Burnley fan but I got Bardsley in this GW, Lowton has been injury free from a while I'm pretty sure and Bardsley has kept getting game time, so I don't see why he should stop playing

Anyone considering Firmino as captain ? His form in last 3 pl away starts has been great

    ars - 1 goal 1 assist

    bou- 1 goal 1 assist

    bha- 2 goals

Not to forget he loves scoring against swans. He has 5 goals in last 3 pl matches against them

    Making 3 moves this GW.
Alonso + McBurnie/Quaner coming in for sure + 1 of the list below.

    1. Lingard (Alonso -> Kenny). Going strong in defence.
    2. Pogba (Alonso -> Christensen) Is Pogba the man to step up?
    3. Son (Alonso -> Christensen) Fantastic option but too sideways?
    4. Sane (Alonso -> Christensen) A slight risk btut potentially massive.

    Lloris.
    Christensen*, Kenny*, Otamendi.
    Sterling, Salah, Richarlison, Arnautovic, Eriksen*.
    Kane, Firmino.
    Speroni, Ogbonna, Mee, Calvert- Lewin*.
    2ft, 0.3m.

Draft league question, appreciate any help: Have

    A) Chadli (who ll be out at least until late Feb and have no idea if he ll return in time, but if he returns he ll be regular starter) and

    B) Lamela (who ll maybe start a few games until the end).

Both on the bench from the beginning but now is the time to drop one of them (or both if i find decent replacements). Who would you drop first?

      What is your TV?

  30. Eze Really?
    • 9 Years
    6 years, 3 months ago

The question over TV against SV:
Obviously SV is always lower and it is argued that this is the real value of your team. This maybe true but we tend to look at it from the wrong direction .
Take Salah for instance, who has risen in price by 1.2 mil. For sure, I can only recover half of the value if I want to sell but the chances of wanting to do that are slim. If he got injured and I replaced him with KDB it would cost me .6 mil for a player of the same value. That is the downturn.
But look at it from a different perspective. If someone wanted Salah now, they are restricted due to price and would probably have to downgrade to get him. It is probably more poignant to use Alonso as an example here, who is going up in price continually and restricts players who have a low TV.
Therefore, I believe a player who has a 2 mil advantage over their rival in TV and 1 mil in SV, really has a 2 mil advantage. Used correctly, it has a major impact on points returns from now until the end of the season.
The TV's of teams are significantly lower this year and chasing value has not been as fruitful as in previous seasons. However, the versatility of of a high TV side will be beneficial IMO as has been proven in sides I have had over the years I have played.
I don't chase value for value sake. I just compare with my ML rivals and act accordingly. I have no interest in overall ranking. I just like to collect money at the end of the season.
I am sure my post will get blasted from a dizzy height as the top players have amassed points without taking hits.
