Scout Notes – Key Duo Get Unwanted Minutes

West Ham and Leicester City do just enough to see off their League One foes as key midfielders have to put in bigger FA Cup shifts than their Fantasy ownership would have liked.

VAR grabbed the headlines, Kelechi Iheanacho the goals and Riyad Mahrez most of our attention as Leicester beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 in their FA Cup third round replay.

The Nigerian striker scored in each half, with assists from Islam Slimani and Mahrez, to set up a tie at Peterborough United.

The match took a long time to warm up, but finally delivered its moment in the sun when Iheanacho became the first player to score a goal awarded by a video assistant referee, who overturned the initial on-field ruling of offside.

Foxes boss Claude Puel had made eight changes from the side that drew with Chelsea at the weekend.

But Mahrez, owned by 12.1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, was one of the three to survive the cull, setting up an anxious evening for his backers.

The Algerian’s fine form – he’s scored five goals and produced four assists across the last ten Gameweeks – and Leicester’s fixtures (WAT eve SWA mci STK BOU wba) have helped his ownership triple over that period.

The fact that his assist kept his run of form going and he left the pitch unscathed after 81 minutes kept everyone happy enough.

The team’s two other popular players, Harry Maguire (11.5%) and Jamie Vardy (15.2%), were given the night off and a nine-minute appearance from the bench respectively.

Should Leicester progress against Peterborough at the end of the month, they’ll have a fifth round tie on the weekend of February 17, sandwiched between a trip to Man City and a visit from Stoke City.

Although Puel’s selections are yet to reflect it, the FA Cup represents mid-table Leicester with their one chance of silverware this season, so rotation might well become an issue should they go further in the competition.

Sub role for Arnautovic

While Mahrez has added a relatively modest 46,000+ to his ownership base ahead of Gameweek 24, West Ham midfielder Marko Arnautovic’s popularity has increased prodigiously.

His 16-point haul in the 4-1 win at Huddersfield – part of an eight-match run in which he’s scored six and set up a further three goals – has prompted more than 160,000 managers to make him FPL’s most purchased player this week.

Eight Gameweeks ago, he was in fewer than 30,000 teams. He now sits in 10.6% of squads and those managers would have been hoping that their man might enjoy a night off as West Ham sought to see off Shrewsbury Town at the second time of asking.

Those hopes were dashed when Arnautovic was brought on after 69 minutes as the Shrews refused to be tamed at the London Stadium.

It took an extra time goal from Reece Burke to finally settle the tie, meaning Arnautovic had to play over 50 minutes of unwanted action ahead of a schedule (BOU cry bha WAT liv swa BUR) that has strong potential for more excellent returns from the in-form Austrian.

However, that’s tempered by the fact that he missed the second match of double Gameweek 22 and the Hammers’ initial goalless draw against Shrewsbury that followed.

Manager David Moyes made seven changes to the side that had thumped the Terriers, with Angelo Ogbonna (6.2%), Manuel Lanzini (2.6%), who has seen his ownership jump by 32,000+ this week, Arthur Masuaku (2.3%) and Pedro Obiang (1.5%) all obliged to play the full 120 minutes last night.

The reward for their 1-0 win is a fourth round tie with either Bournemouth or Wigan.

If that ends up being an all-Premier League affair, it will mean a fifth round match for either West Ham, who will host Watford and then travel to Liverpool in between, or the Cherries, who are due at Huddersfield before, and entertain Newcastle after, the cup tie over the weekend of February 17.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Leicester Targets

With just two tough matches (GWK 27 mci, GWK 38 tot) for the rest of the season Leicester have a sumptuous run of games. What is more they have a great Gameweek 28 fixture (STK), when key teams will be missing a match due to League Cup final action.

They also have strong assets– with Mahrez the sixth highest scoring FPL player, Vardy scoring nine goals and the defence keeping six clean sheets and looking for their third shut out in a row.

Which Leicester assets are you targeting and why?

This week i have 2 FT and i will buy Mahrez and Maguire instead of Alli and Vertonghen. Perfect fixtures, form and none of my rivals have even one of them.

P.S. Leicester under Puel look very solid now.

Always been a big fan of Maguire and have coveted him for a while. I missed out on Otamendi as his price disappeared out of reach, but I'm tempted by Christensen to Maguire and will do so 100% if there's any further signs that Christensen is likely to be rotated regularly.

Vardy up top because he facilitates a big midfield and is one of only two scoring forwards outside the £10+m elite striker market. He's a Firmino differential.

Was going to pull the trigger on Mahrez until I saw him starting last night. 81 mins has irked me as he hasn't had a rest all season. This, as well as the transfer talk, is putting me off.

Would love to take Mahrez but equally feel I can’t part with Son at this moment.

Consequently I’ve done Richarlison to Albrighton this week. He doesn’t have the explosive potential of Mahrez but his output is not far behind him recently.

May make further moves gw28. But not Vardy: not as effective against deep sitting teams

Im considering this move to but afraid I'll want to upgrade Albrighton in a few weeks, when I downgrade Aguero. So that would make two transfers in a few weeks for the same 'spot', in my team. It's a spot where I would like a Richarlison upgrade (Mahrez, Son, Pogba, Sanchez,...?) when I get rid of Aguero.

On a more serious note - issue is Vardy < Firmino and Mahrez < Sane (plus transfer speculation for Marrez)

Still got Maguire so happy to keep and see what happens. Thought they might of got one or two more clean sheets since Puel came in, but I am hopeful having not conceded last two. Attacking and bonus potential as well.

Mahrez is the one I am really looking at. Mainly because I got in late on firmino and think I'm going to go with Kane,Wilson up top and spread the cash into the mid int he coming period as a slight differential.

If I owned firmino and needed a more budget 5th mid, I would be looking at albrighton thats for sure.

Vardy doesn't have the best record against weaker teams this year which is holding me back from going for him instead of wilson I think.

For my team its mahrez/wilson vs vardy and a 6.2m mid. I prefer Mahrez/Wilson

I've actually sold Vardy this week despite the fixture list. He is clearly not in form - 3 goals in his last 10 in what was a relatively promising run of games. Add to that the fact that 7 of his 9 goals this season have come against top 6 opposition. Mahrez is the one to get for me but he is slightly down my wishlist for now.

Looking at Mahrez. Maybe Maguire as a Davies replacement after 24, but I think I'll go for VVD instead.

Ideally, would want to upgrade Richarlison to Mahrez, downgrading Aguero when Jesus is back allowing me too.

Thing is I have enough money right now to get rid of Richarlison and Aguero for Mahrez and Firmino - that would leave me 0.2 itb. But it seems like Mahrez is abt to rise before GW24 deadline, and Richarlsion to drop. So if I don't do it now, I would have the exact money to do it before GW25. IF Firmino doesn't rise a second time before GW24 deadline.

Not sure what to do. But getting rid of Aguero before NEW (H) at home FOR A HIT sounds like madness. I brought the guy for NEW and WBA... I shouldnt take that hit, right?

Really like Albrighton if in need of a differential - has matched last year's output already and has nailed the spot at 5.6
Mahrez though is so under the radar; once the transfer window closes he's in for me.

For me, it's not just the fixtures - I've been really impressed with how Puel has them playing. They were excellent in the first half at Chelsea.

Mahrez is clearly the crown jewell and the key Fantasy asset but when he is on it, I also think he lifts the potential of those around him.

I'd expect Vardy, Albrighton and Okazaki - when he plays - to prosper if they can maintain the form over this run.]

I'd certainly get Mahrez if I had a clear contender to make way in midfield but, as it stands, I couldn't see one of the template five I was willing to lose. That might change. So in the meantime, I went Vardy to attempt to cover the Leicester upside but should one Lingard/Arnie/Son start to falter, I think I'll go to the Wilson/Mahrez combo.

Less convinced at the back, but Chilwell looks a great compromise for those not willing to stretch to Maguire.

          mmm...I'd consider it perhaps.

There's risk there but I would say that Mahrez and Arnie look better placed for points in GW24.

I think the hit would probably mean I'd leave it, though. The pair would already be 4 points down so that has to be a factor.

Plus I think Lingard deserves another eye test yet.

I'm looking at the exact same move (and have for some time) - the next 4-5 fixtures for WHU and LEI are just so tempting while those of MUN and TOT do not look food at all (in United's case, in terms of attack potential in particular). The only thing I'm undecided on, is timing - whether this GW24 or next (when Spurs's fixtures turn for 3GW, have Kane too). What I'm worried about is (a) Alli turning on the style against Southampton - they've not been great defensively and lost 5-2 to Spurs just a few weeks ago (+ I chose Alli over Son before the double-GW, banking on him to explode after Christmas like last year which didn't happen) and/or (b) Lingard having a (good) response v Burnley (who still have injuries at the back). Perhaps Mahrez and Arnautovic both playing yesterday will be the deciding factor here ... Still, I'm very much "torn" on this swap.

If Firmino keeps up his form, I’ll go without Vardy. If not, Jamie’ll spend the rest of his season having a party in my team.

Otherwise, Mahrez is becoming a must, and Albrighton may well be a perfect enabler as a 4/5th mid. Whether their defence has turned a corner remains to be seen.

It's fair enough. Based on last night, Jonty feels that Mahrez and Albrighton can excel but Vardy won't.

I don't agree, I don't think one will necessarily happen without the other.

Yes we can look at Vardy's record vs lower level clubs.

But we can also look at his record that shows 11 goals in 11 successive matches.

I think Leicester's form and fixtures are good enough for Vardy to overcome any issue the stats suggest if Mahrez is on song. But we'll see.

I agree Mark. I listened to the Scoutcast this morning on the way into work and I have to say I agree with your decision to swerve the obvious transfer and be a bit more daring whilst savings funds. I also have no problem with the early transfer as sometimes you've just got to get it done and avoid a 0.1 drop. How many times have you gone to do a transfer and been 0.1 short??

Personally I've done an early -4 to get Morata out for Aguero and swapped Mee to Bardsley to fund the deal

Did you get Vardy in Mark????
I don't think that he's the same player that scored 11 in 11. I watch a lot of football and Vardy's strength is his pace and work rate against the bigger teams. When the play lesser teams and aren't playing on the break as much, he is far less effective imo. His goal scoring stats back that up to a certain extent also.
Vardy is still a very good player and I'd be foolish to discount decent points returns over the medium term but Mahrez is the golden goose if he stays! Mahrez is the one that has the magic to destroy the likes of SWA, STK & WBA.

            Yeah I agree.

But there are times in the season when I think Vardy can produce regardless and I just thought - in the short-term - even if it's just for GW24, it would be worth a shot.

Watford have a lot to do with it too. I don't see Marco Silva turning up and dropping deep. Watford always attack opponents - look at their City performance at the Etihad. As soon as they gain possession they burst, much like Leicester themselves. I think there will be goals in the game with the two teams exchanging blows.

If Vardy blanks and doesn't impress, I'll have to reconsider. At that point I'll either go to Wilson, or concede on Firmino I guess - depending on how Liverpool perform at Swansea.

Like I said last night, I've not necessarily signed Vardy on a long-term deal. He'll only get a longer contract if he does the business 😉

I've been eyeing up Maguire for a while, I really want him soon! I can see him scoring a couple of goals in upcoming fixtures.
I was so close to getting in Mahrez this week, but felt I couldn't afford to go any more than 2 GWs without LIV and City attack so I prioritised getting in Salah + KDB.
Finally, Albrighton is the obvious one on the cheap. An underrated player that possesses a superb delivery, can chip in with the odd goal also!
I feel Vardy isn't at the races when it comes to scoring goals in his good fixtures. Too pricy for me (poor TV), rather go with one striker and a cheaper second striker (eg. Wilson) or two uber cheap ones (Ayew, Niasse-pending move). I feel if Nacho got a run in the team, he could be decent at 6.5 (but that's perhaps a punt too far)!

Why would you get KDB for your only city asset when Sterling is so cheap compared?

I just really wanted KDB, I feel these next two fixtures will suit him down to the ground! I feel that I've missed the boat on Sterling and I held Sane for far too long previously. KDB is not part of the current rotation machine, whereas I feel Sterling might get the odd rest for Bernardo. I will be putting my money where my mouth is and captaining him for the next 2! If it doesn't work out, he's a very easy downgrade.

For the ones looking for a keeper, Schmeichel is a decent option I think. Their defence seems to improve and he already scored more than any other LEI defenders (including Maguire) with 3 double-digit score till now. He is 4th overall in saves after Fabianski, DDG and Pickford. With that fixture and form, he can easily be the most scoring LEI defender and one of the most scoring keepers for the rest of the season.

Just catching up on the Scoutcast. Good stuff, enjoying the discussions about 'the template' and also Mark's points on Pogba's assists - been thinking exactly the same thing.

Same here, not saying assists won't come for him, it's just guys won't score those excellent goals in every game. Nice to see I wasn't the only one thinking the same thing.

Mark also hinted that he wanted enough funds to be able to do Lingard > Pogba just in case. Clearly still a good asset to own and not as highly owned....

Yeah, he's clearly a key man and if Sanchez arrives, there will be more goals which should see Pogba's output increase.

I still think he's priced well for what he brings.

I just don't think he's the "assist king" that the press are talking up just yet. I still see De Bruyne as being at a different level in that respect.

In actual real life football an assist is really a pass that improves the position of the ball to create a goal. Like a chip over the defence, or a clever back-heel pass in the box, or a winger beating his man and delivering a cross etc

Really a square ten yard pass thats smashed in the top corner from 25 yards isnt an "assist" in the terms we eulogise about when we think of players with vision and technique. A lay off in midfield technically is an assist for the bean counters but its just a pass that another player did all the work on to create a goal.

Pogba has given the last pass 11 times but is he really an "assist king"?

Would the man who gave Maradona the ball for his legendary solo goal v England be thought of as providing an assist? Most likely not. In FF he'd get three points lol

It was a good scout cast! especially the difference in opinion about sticking with template vs moving away from it. Pogba likely to be coming into my team in next 2 weeks and will be my UTD attacking asset, never jumped on the lingard train which also makes it more appealing.

It's always risky. TBH. He has INCREDIBLE home form (have a look) and 2 of those 3 "hard" fixtures are at home, with the other being against Pool which will probably be 3-3 or something.

It seems silly to remove him but if you have no other pressing issues, probably worth a punt on someone with better fixtures and equally good form.

    On the radar is :
pickford - (good fixtures and better comments from big sam)
    Mahrez - (instead of vardy)
    Wilson - (fixtures and form)

    Players to make way:

Rightly or wrongly I decided to WC last night after the scoutcast.
I wasn’t enjoying “the game” as much due to poor transfer decisions made in past game weeks and haven’t been making much OR progress either. I have also been slowly getting caught in my MLs.
Decided to break the 3-5-2 template and go back to a 3-4-3 but keeping some key players.
Could easily backfire but at least I’m happier with my team:

    DDG
    Alonso, Otamendi, Jones
    Salah, Sterling, Pogba, Arnautovic
    Kane, Firmino, Wilson

I actually think it's a great move. Love the team and so much dead wood shipped, of course a WC will be useful later... but my view is 6 weeks of possible top draw scores out weigh a late dgw upside. Also given you have free hit can now do the boomerang FH (love that new expression!)

Exactly, no one but those two imo.

Considering this move myself but the issue is the following - the spot currently occupied by Richarlison in my team is meant for an upgrade like Mahrez/Son/Pogba/Silva/Mané/Sanchez when I downgrade Aguero, after the next two games.

So if I 'downgrade' Richa to Albrighton or Shaqiri right now, it would most likely mean using 2 transfers (at least one hit, then, I guess) for the same spot in like 2 or 3 weeks. RThat's what's stopping me doing it.

This is half the reason I’m back to a 3-4-3 now. Wilson is the ideal replacement as a 3rd striker rather than having a 6.0 5th mid

This has been niggling me since Wilson's price rise last night and I just can't forget it
I have exact money for Christensen DCL and Son to Alonso Albrighton Wilson
Only taken 3 hits all season but that looks well tempting
    Risky losing Son though
    Thoughts ?

If Cahill is out I will probably do DCL to wilson and leave the other 2 for next week and pray hard for no price drops or rises

Don’t think it’s worth the -8 myself considering the benching of Wilson. I’d wait til end of window for that move, keep the cash itb. Wouldn’t axe Son personally but the lure of Alonso can be irresistible

Currently eyeing this up for next 2 weeks, just need to make a decision when to make the moves given the fixtures: Whats your thoughts? too much or could it pay off?

    Fabianski > Pickford
    Eriksen > Mahrez
    DCL > Wilson
    Son > Pogba

either 2 -4's or a -8 would give me this team:

    Pickford
    Alonso,Otamendi,Jones
    Salah,Arnautovic,Sterling,Mahrez,Pogba
    Kane,Wilson

    elliot,dunk,ogbonna,depoitre

      Bolasie Siggy Walcott

No Rooney imo if the 3 mids can start performing.

      Tosun

All 4 could become options if that's the case. Siggy especially, being on all set pieces.

Really want to bring in Arnie for Lingard - but would require an additional transfer somewhere to generate the -0.1m needed.

    Pope (Myhill)
    Alonso, Otamendi, Kenny, Ogbonna (Mbemba)
    Salah, Sterling, Son, Lingard (RLC)
    Kane, Aguero (Niasse)

Worth taking the hit this week (facilitated perhaps by Ogbonna to Chilwell) - or save and reassess the following week? Naturally, an inevitable price rise for Arnie will mean that I'll need to find the additional money elsewhere (Otamendi to Stones could be an option).

Could someone tell me what team rotate well with C.Palace? I have Speroni/Hennessy at the moment in goal and will be looking to offload one soon to rotate during the tough fixtures. Any thoughts appreciated?

Yes that would make sense both being London based clubs. Adrian cheap too at 4.4 but not a whole lot of cleanies in that DF
