Scout Notes – Key Duo Get Unwanted Minutes

West Ham and Leicester City do just enough to see off their League One foes as key midfielders have to put in bigger FA Cup shifts than their Fantasy ownership would have liked.

VAR grabbed the headlines, Kelechi Iheanacho the goals and Riyad Mahrez most of our attention as Leicester beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 in their FA Cup third round replay.

The Nigerian striker scored in each half, with assists from Islam Slimani and Mahrez, to set up a tie at Peterborough United.

The match took a long time to warm up, but finally delivered its moment in the sun when Iheanacho became the first player to score a goal awarded by a video assistant referee, who overturned the initial on-field ruling of offside.

Foxes boss Claude Puel had made eight changes from the side that drew with Chelsea at the weekend.

But Mahrez, owned by 12.1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, was one of the three to survive the cull, setting up an anxious evening for his backers.

The Algerian’s fine form – he’s scored five goals and produced four assists across the last ten Gameweeks – and Leicester’s fixtures (WAT eve SWA mci STK BOU wba) have helped his ownership triple over that period.

The fact that his assist kept his run of form going and he left the pitch unscathed after 81 minutes kept everyone happy enough.

The team’s two other popular players, Harry Maguire (11.5%) and Jamie Vardy (15.2%), were given the night off and a nine-minute appearance from the bench respectively.

Should Leicester progress against Peterborough at the end of the month, they’ll have a fifth round tie on the weekend of February 17, sandwiched between a trip to Man City and a visit from Stoke City.

Although Puel’s selections are yet to reflect it, the FA Cup represents mid-table Leicester with their one chance of silverware this season, so rotation might well become an issue should they go further in the competition.

Sub role for Arnautovic

While Mahrez has added a relatively modest 46,000+ to his ownership base ahead of Gameweek 24, West Ham midfielder Marko Arnautovic’s popularity has increased prodigiously.

His 16-point haul in the 4-1 win at Huddersfield – part of an eight-match run in which he’s scored six and set up a further three goals – has prompted more than 160,000 managers to make him FPL’s most purchased player this week.

Eight Gameweeks ago, he was in fewer than 30,000 teams. He now sits in 10.6% of squads and those managers would have been hoping that their man might enjoy a night off as West Ham sought to see off Shrewsbury Town at the second time of asking.

Those hopes were dashed when Arnautovic was brought on after 69 minutes as the Shrews refused to be tamed at the London Stadium.

It took an extra time goal from Reece Burke to finally settle the tie, meaning Arnautovic had to play over 50 minutes of unwanted action ahead of a schedule (BOU cry bha WAT liv swa BUR) that has strong potential for more excellent returns from the in-form Austrian.

However, that’s tempered by the fact that he missed the second match of double Gameweek 22 and the Hammers’ initial goalless draw against Shrewsbury that followed.

Manager David Moyes made seven changes to the side that had thumped the Terriers, with Angelo Ogbonna (6.2%), Manuel Lanzini (2.6%), who has seen his ownership jump by 32,000+ this week, Arthur Masuaku (2.3%) and Pedro Obiang (1.5%) all obliged to play the full 120 minutes last night.

The reward for their 1-0 win is a fourth round tie with either Bournemouth or Wigan.

If that ends up being an all-Premier League affair, it will mean a fifth round match for either West Ham, who will host Watford and then travel to Liverpool in between, or the Cherries, who are due at Huddersfield before, and entertain Newcastle after, the cup tie over the weekend of February 17.

Would surely mean Firmino needs to instantly return in order to justify that. Wouldn't it make more sense to wait a week? Rest of the squad looks solid.

    Mark, re-FantasyFootballSprout comment.
To be fair, Ruth's first comment on the 'Climb The Ranks' post WAS a personal comment about the poster's style as a "limited and mediocre manager". I would stand up for the rights of any poster, including Ruth, to say whatever they want, but personally aimed comments are not helpful

David Moyes has refused to be drawn on Chelsea's interest in West Ham striker Andy Carroll, but says he hopes to add to his squad in January rather than sell.

Sky sources understand Chelsea have made contact with the Hammers with the intent of signing Carroll on a permanent deal.

But, quizzed about Carroll after West Ham edged past Shrewsbury in the FA Cup, Moyes said: "They have not made contact with me, so if they have made contact with someone else I don't know about it.

"At the moment Andy Carroll is one of my squad, I want to add to the squad, not lose players.

"I know nothing about it. There have been a lot of rumours regarding a loan but as far as I know it has never officially come from Chelsea. I am not keen to lose any players, I am more keen to add to the squad.

"At the moment Andy has an ankle injury so we are hoping that will settle quickly and he will be back training shortly."

Moyes also said he has not spoken to the West Ham owners regarding Carroll's future.

Reflecting on the cup tie, which saw Reece Burke score an extra-time winner, Moyes said: "The cup ties are difficult. The expectation is on us to make all the running.

"We started tonight with a lot of young players due to injury and people not being available for the game. I think that expectation might have been too high and I knew with the team we were playing it was going to be touch and go to beat Shrewsbury.

"We always looked the most likely side, albeit we looked as though we couldn't score at the top end and didn't look strong enough in the forward areas to give ourselves a chance.

"It's only really when Marko [Arnautovic] came on did we look as though that was possible. Good credit to Shrewsbury, they did a really good job and made it hard for us to score. Fortunately, we came up with something just before the end."

    Alonso - Otamendi - Maguire
    vs
    Christensen - Stones - Chilwell/Simpson

I know Simpson is injured but think he is returning - at what point do you go with the expensive nailed attacking threat over the cheaper 'CS-only' defender? How much is too much?

I know a lot own these players at lower prices but the current difference between these sets of players is 19.2 v 15.3, worth it?

Is it better to get Tosun this GW and Firmino for a hit the following one

    or

to play Depoitre this GW and get Firmino with 2 FT for gw25?

      Why even consider Tosun?

Is Wilson really the Messiah? Have seen plenty of teams lately with him at F2 in a 352!

Nah. I just think what Wilson might be able to get you in midfield could be the big pull.

It depends if a big gun breaks up this pesky five we've got.

Thats the big pull to me, for me its Wilson and Mahrez, vs Firmino and Albrighton. the other mids are template, Sterling,Salah,Arnautovic,Son

allows me to fund fabianski upgrade and potentially Son to pogba next week

          I’d rather Shaqiri than Wilson.

It’s old fashioned chasing for mine. The mids at that price point are far more favorable.

Looking at doing a slight overhaul.
    Pope to pickford
    Ogbonna to Jones
Ali to albrighton or other 5.6
    Christenson to Alonzo
    Good or bad moves?

After my indecision last night, I've decided to go template

    Alli + DCL -> Arnie + Firmino.

We'll be more decisive on the new article.

Decent moves Az, I went Hazard + DCL >> Arnie + Firms

Feels good, glad to see the back of Hazard. Alonso is enough Chelsea for me at the mo!

Choupo-Moting worth the 5th midfield spot with upcoming games or can I invest £5.8m better?

Already have 3 pool players, I’ve upgraded Adrian to Pickford so now only have £5.4m to play with

What do you reckon chaps (all chips in tact):

    DDG
    Otamendi Christensen Ogbonna (Mee Dunk)
    Salah Sterling Son Lingard (RLC)
    Kane Firmino DCL

    1. DCL and Son > Aguero and 5.5 (-4) (0.1 off the Ox annoyingly)
    2. RLC > Arnie (bench DCL)
    3. DCL > Vardy

A could be massive, but is Sergio blinding me?

I found it funny getting slated a bit about having no LIV or no City attack in my team at the beginning of the week.
The 'those that sold Salah got punished' is also a load of rubbish in many cases!
eg. I got rid of Salah in 22 along with RLC, Richarlison & Morata.
I got in Son + Eriksen + Lanzini + Chicharito.
I bought him back this week, ok I lost a little value but gained a cartload of points!
87 + 89 points due to shunning Salah & City attack for a couple of gameweeks is hardly a poor decision?
    Points over Pounds!

Easy in hindsight. I kept, but also had Son and Eriksen and a decent bench. Long term no city or Liverpool will harm you (if it hasn't already). What is your rank...
