The ScoutCast – Episode 246 – Smashing

The ScoutCast quintet take on established Fantasy thinking in this latest episode, as we debate the quest to smash the current template squad.

What is the template? How can we break it? Should we even bother?

The discussion that unfolds is predictably sprawling and often heated, as once again the conflicting philosophies on Fantasy management in the ScoutCast crew are laid bare.

Elsewhere we let the rest of your community questions steer the conversation, as we contemplate Sanchez at United, battle Firmino vs Aguero and even find time to check in on Stoke.

Try as we might, even we struggle to argue about Stoke.

By the way, off the air we carried on the debate and, in the end, everyone agreed that I was right and that I also had the best beard.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Assuming RLC is long term goosed, what are owners doing?

Like for like cheapie or upgrading to a 3-5-2?

just went 343 with Wilson, so I'll leave for now - but planning a Kane Wilson Ayew 352 when I move Aguero out anyway so will upgrade to a premium mid then

Probably another fodder as I like my 3-4-3 with Kane, Firm and Wilson up top for now.

Will be getting rid once Jesus comes back. I have Aguero so will downgrade to Firmino and replace RLC with Ramsey, Lanzini or another form midfielder.

Cheers all. Currently got 3-4-3 with firmino kane Wilson, but need to sort RLC before league cup final weekend.

Bench not strong enough to hold up at present but suspect I'll go with cheapest starter I can get.

Any transfer which involves getting Alonso in is automatically more fun than one that doesn’t. He’s the most fun player to own that I can remember.

getting Kun in is by far more fun as he either will troll you or make you jump on sofa..
Alonso is class and safe as you will almost always get 6 points minimum

Who would you rather have for your draft team? Martial or Walcott?

Walcott more assured of starts you'd think but Martial scoring well when he plays. My worry about Martial is that the signing of Martial will also likely reduce his minutes.

    Pope (Elliott)
    Ota-Cresswell-Daniels (Duffy-Naughton)
    Salah-Sterling-Son-Lingard-Arni
    Kane-Firm (Ayew). 2.2 ITB

I want Marhez next GW (in for Son). Is it better to do:

    A) Elliott+Daniels -> Hennessy+Rüdiger (leaves me with Chelsea cover)
    B) Elliott+Daniels -> Pickford+Maguire (no Chelsea cover and that feels uncomfy)

Ibe remains your strongest bet in that price range.

Sako at Palace for 4.9 if you can find a little more looks good.

For Members here's some more options among 5.0 max price mids.

I agree. Mids rule the roost currently. the fifth mid is being benched most weeks which takes away a midfield place.Meanwhile there are far less lucrative strikers.

I'm waiting on Niasse move too.

Seriousy considering 4-5-1 with cheapey strikers for this reason with plenty of options to replace underperforning or mids with bad fixtures , can do 3-5-2 if req

The only reason I switched away from 4-5-1 is that with only one strong striker you have to play four at the back as a minimum. I don't think it gives you as much flexibility as other systems when defences are not firing every week.

That is fair , i think as a rule if 4 at least 3 need to be prem with bonus assist or goal potentiel , behind kane there are few defenders that beat the strikers scores so far , or are you swapoing strikers quite often ?

I agree with that. I think the only strikers that are worth their money are Kane (as a captain option), Aguero (until Jesus returns), Firmino JUST (though he plays a bit deep and I only have him because Liverpool are free-scoring) Vardy JUST (if good fixtures come along) Wilson (decent points per game).

I currently have Kane and Firmino and I'm reasonably happy. But if I could play 3-6-1 I would gladly swap Bobby for Mané.

                  i have done exactly this.

                  currently have:

                  alonso
                  jones
                  vvd
                  danilo (will swap to Martina/Ward)

                  sane
                  sterling
                  salah
                  mahrez
                  son (will swap to Mane)

                  Kane

im interested to see why you dont like the 4-5-1 (you said if you could have 3-6-1?)

Would like booby but think mahrez as one example will score similar fpl points , i have wilson as second striker so frees up funds not exprcting hauls from him
So many mids to choose from would gladly have 6

My choices so far are mahrez in mid , def maguire and dummet or other cheapy and pickford in goal

Mahrez I think is a good move for eriksen, Do you own son? If so I would look to get rid of eriksen this week. Pickford great call and either maguire/vvd/stones are good calls in that price region. I have ogbonna, tough to know where to go currently, probably will look to get back into burnley def when fixtures swing

No son just the spurs ive done free this wk from DCL to wilson so not sure its worth the hit to get Mahrez

Yes its tough at min when to make certain moves , got ottemendi but if gets a ban on 10 yellows wld prob switch to stones

West ham not watertight see over next 2 home games though maybe , you playing him at them min?

Thats a good shout on burnley in a few weeks fixtures pick up again

Niasse if he moves is interesting, I'll give you that. But we wont know where and how much he will play for another two weeks.

I believe you have two premium strikers, thats why you need 5th cheap mid.
For me, ibe would be good to replace Loftus.

RLC is out for several months. If you want him on your bench for that long, sure ^^

Ox, will he be a regular, now that Lallana has improved his fitness level, and Hendo is back in training? Remember, Wijnaldum and Can is there as well.

      Thanks for the HT, fellows.

Not sure Ibe is as good as RLC was. He costs 4.8, but his numbers are good only for the two previous games. That does not convince me at all.

Is it better to save up some money and get a 5+ mid instead?

Points-wise, it’s only the last 2 games where his numbers are good. For key passes, shots in the box plus others he’s had good numbers for the last 5.

Also poor numbers for dribbles, poor passing, and tackles. Perhaps numbers were okay on the one game four games ago, but the rest tells me he is risky, unstable, and not as reassuring as RLC was.

Good question, and there are a number of potential solutions, depending on what team structure you want to have moving forward, your current team, and amount of money itb.

There is a good argument that this is the time to switch to 3-5-2, therefore you'll want a little more money on the pitch as your 5th mid - to do that 5th midfield contenders include Oxlade-Chamberlain and Albrighton. They look the best contenders to me as they are playing for teams with good runs of fixtures, also have a guarenteed attractive fixture in (potential) blank gameweek 28, and appear to be players in decent form too. Albrighton looks nailed to me, Ox more of a risk with Liverpool having Henderson, Lallana, Wijnaldum, Can, Ox, and Milner fighting out for just 3 midfield slots, and European games on the horizon too which could see rotation return. However since Coutinho left he has played more minutes than before, which could indicate he is the favoured option by Klopp. Obviously if you have the money itb, Lingard and Arnautovic are probably even better options than these 2.

If you are playing 3-4-3 or 4-4-2 and are happy to do so for the next few fixtures, then you could just simply hold and put RLC third sub, focussing your transfers on the value positions in your squad, "focussing on the core", to put it another way. As the high value players are where most of your points will come, this could be the most efficient way to maximise your points over the coming gameweeks. Also, we are out of the most fixture congested period of the season now, so our benches are less likely to be needed. Its feasible you could manage with RLC until the second wildcard, depending on when you plan to play it. However you could leave yourself exposed in blank gameweeks 28 and 31 with this strategy.

Finally (and to actually answer your question! 😉 ), if you just want a straight swap, then I would consider Atsu or Ibe (both have attacking threat, are in favour with their managers, and guarenteed a fixture in 28). However my favoured pick would be Milivojevic. He is cheaper than those 2 at 4.6, plays every game, has a guarenteed fixture in 28, is on penalties, and even showed he has a goal threat from open play by scoring a lovely goal against Southampton 2 weeks ago.

Good luck, whichever option you go with 🙂

Thank you for the thorough response ^^

I do not like to leave myself exposed, so I am one of those who "always" have a playing bench, just to be on the safe side.

Your straight swap options are noted. Ibe does not convince me, contrary to most people here. Atsu has been good the last games, but according to Benitez, several players are on their way in. Which means he might be rotated more. Mili is a safe bet, like Carroll, but perhaps a bit higher chance of goals. I think I will go for one of those if I want bench fodder fifth mid 🙂 Will look more towards Mili after your post.

        Thanks for the help!

That's why I spent more $ and got Doucoure as my 5th mid. I can go 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 with Doucoure. I have enough money to afford this, so it was time to spend it.

I'll ignore the obvious options already mentioned.

I still quite like Milivojevic - Hodgson has Palace playing better, he's on penalties and can chip in from open play occasionally.

I would also love someone to succeed with a punt on Stephen Ireland.

Mesa or King for 4.2 for me, or just bench RLC. The budget is tight this season and by the time 8th attackers become important, that's around the time to be playing the wildcard or free hit.

None of them, they have a really good fixture.
Fix other problems in the squad if you can/need with 1FT this week, then swap both next week.

Maybe you have DCL or RCL or both, fix one of them with 1FT now for example
