Scout Notes – Hazard Hits Back

Eden Hazard bursts back into life just as Fantasy managers’ lose faith, while a Chelsea centre-back misses out on clean sheet points by only three minutes for a second Gamewweek running.

More than 100,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – close to a quarter of his total ownership – sold Hazard before today’s trip to Brighton.

Not that this was a one-off exodus, with the Belgian losing over half a million managers since Gameweek 19 on the back of an eight-match run in which he’d managed just one goal and an assist.

Almost inevitably, he bit back with a 16-point display involving two goals and maximum bonus as the Blues were left slightly flattered by their 4-0 win at the Amex Stadium.

However well Brighton played for scant reward, there was no disputing the masterclass put on by Hazard.

He thrived in a 3-4-2-1 system forced on coach Antonio Conte by suspensions for Alvaro Morata and Pedro and a hamstring issue that continues to keep Cesc Fabregas on the sidelines.

Hazard and Willian supported lone striker Michy Batshuayi, and it was the midfielders who provided much of the attacking threat.

The Brazilian matched the forward’s four attempts on goal (Hazard had three), while Willian (8) and Hazard (7) both had more penalty area touches than Batshuayi’s four.

Conte has been doing a convincing impression recently of a manager unsure as to his best side and how to set them up.

It looks like he might have stumbled on both the formation and most of the personnel today, with Morata likely to replace Batshuayi, but with Hazard and Willian retained as his attacking partners, particularly as the latter scored one goal and set up another at Brighton.

That could finally usher in the Brazilian as a consistent starter this season, making the 6.7-priced midfielder a real option with Chelsea’s schedule (BOU wat WBA) still attractive until a Manchester double header of both United and City across Gameweeks 28 and 29.

Willian has recorded three double-digit returns in the last eight Gameweeks, having started only five matches in that spell.

He is owned by 7.6% at present, which is a mark of how far Hazard’s star has fallen as the Belgian’s ownership is now down to 6.4%. Their contrasting price tags – with Hazard at 10.6 – has been the major factor. Sure enough, it is Willian who is currently the most bought asset following today’s action, picking up over 10,000 new owners while Hazard has tempted just a third of that so far.

Mixed fortunes at the back

Chelsea have now kept six clean sheets in seven matches as their popular defenders Marcos Alonso (26.3%) and Cesar Azpilicueta (23.0%) continue to set the pace in the overall standings.

But it hasn’t been so sweet for all.

Spare a thought for the 4.2% who overlooked Alonso in favour of the more budget-friendly Andreas Christensen (5.6).

The young Dane was taken off after 57 minutes with a head injury at this afternoon – the second week running he’s missed out on clean sheet points by just three minutes. During Chelsea’s superb recent run of shut-outs, Christensen has profited from just one of them.

Mercifully, the injury was dismissed by Antonio Conte post-match, who indicated that Christensen would return for the midweek Carabao Cup semi-final with Arsenal on Wednesday…

“Andreas had a contusion. We made a substitution, but the player didn’t want to come off. At the same time, when you have the possibility to have on the bench players like David Luiz, it was simple for me. The referee tried to force this substitution. It was a simple contusion. The player is okay. From tomorrow’s training session, he’s ready.”

Nonetheless, Christensen is already the most sold defender, with over 6000 of his owners reacting to their misfortune by trading him out, regardless of those kind fixtures to come.

There was also a bitter blow for the 13.3% of managers with Thibaut Courtois in goal.

The club confirmed that a minor ankle issue, sustained in training, was to blame for the Belgian’s non-appearance today, which meant a first league start for Willy Caballero.

The Argentine looked shaky at times but pulled off one fine point-blank save from a Tomer Hemed header to earn his corn.

Victor Moses was another to enjoy his day out on the south coast, the wing-back adding a goal, an assist and two bonus points to his clean sheet for a season-high 17 points.

However, such is the pull of Alonso in Chelsea’s backline – the Spaniard has 60 points more than Moses – that the Nigerian’s insignificant 69,280 ownership is unlikely to increase by anything more than a nominal amount.

Dark clouds over Brighton

The consensus was that Brighton performed admirably against Chelsea.

But they lost 4-0 anyway.

Chris Hughton’s side have now kept just one clean sheet in five matches, conceding nine goals along the way.

And their attacking form is desperate – the Seagulls have scored only four goals in 12 matches, with half of those coming in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in Gameweek 22.

Brighton have broken their transfer record to sign striker Jürgen Locadia from PSV Eindhoven to try and stop the rot, although he is currently recovering from a hamstring problem and played no part today.

But the major casualty of the goal drought has been Pascal Gross.

The midfielder’s ownership peaked at over 1,176,000 in Gameweek 14. It’s now down to 872,000, with more than 112,000 getting rid for Gameweek 24 as the midfielder’s barren spell stretched to one goal and no assists from his last 12 starts.

Brighton’s short-term fixtures (sot WHU stk SWA) are sound enough for Gross to recover, although his, and the side’s, form suggests otherwise.

At the back, Hughton’s move to a three-man defence brought Connor Goldson (3.9) into the line-up.

Such a bargain basement price creates a situation that needs monitoring.

But given Brighton’s early capitulation – they were 2-0 down after six minutes today – it will likely be an experiment abandoned almost as soon as it began.

    THE PICKFORD BANDWAGON

Sadly i'm guilty as charged and punished for it both points wise and in kicking myself at the stupidity.

A PK save is a chance encounter and it skews statistics in favour of Pickford's last 9GW point returns. I do agree that he returns Bonus points when Everton keep a clean sheet but currently the probability of Everton keeping a clean sheet is HALF (or lower) that of Chelsea or Man Utd. Sadly those 4 points for a CS are far more reliable/consistent than outlier incidents e.g. PK save or Bonus.

This season more and more top managers have invested in premium keepers instead of the Heaton/Foster buy and forget mentality of the last few years. Pickford is an example of that mentality whereas most top teams right now are investing in at-least 2 premium defenders + a premium keeper. I see Alonso, Otamendi, Jones + DDG in lots of teams at the expense of a filler fwd or mid. It's boiling down to 'value' picks Alonso having returned similar points as Alonso until this GW (or thereabouts).

I wished i had the clarity of mind to convince myself before opting for Pickford, but sadly I did not.

    Cheers.

Haven’t looked at the top 10K, but I am still seeing a lot of cheap GKs and with it funds spread to help other assets. It is hard to just look at DDGs returns in isolation and say everyone should have him. Having said that, I do always think about it.

I think the correlation between Alonso's and Alonso's point totals is more than similar.

Pickford is a good price, will get a few cleanies and gets a huge amount of saves. In a good game he can get 10 points without a pen save. Can see DDG doing that as well, but he's much more expensive.

I still think he’s a good pick. Man Utd and Chelsea have kept an unnatural number of clean sheets this season to say they concede quite a few big chances/close penalty calls every week. Long term Pickford will pay off with all the saves and bonus he picks up

Pickford has a bad week, he’ll come good. I don’t think DDG, Alonso etc are worth the money, personally. I’d much rather a cheap defence focused on fixtures.

1 cleanie in last 6. all these non top 6 teams, cleanies dry up when fixtures get slightly tricky. cant afford to use transfers on defenders if your point is to transfer them out . sticking with che-utd.city backline has worked wonders for me

Stoke has a good run and you could expect a CS against Hudds. And owning Christensen has been a disaster for 2 GW in a row now. Yes, some bad luck happened, but that can be said about the outside-6 defenders too.

Owning just any old top six defenders isn't enough - you need the best ones, the ones who get goals, assists and/or bonus points on top of their clean sheets and are nailed on (if you can afford them).

In Chelsea's case, that means Alonso and/or Azpilicueta.

Similarly, in Man City's case that means Otamendi.

If you can't afford the top defenders, then the next best value is to be found outside these teams.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I knew i'd made a mistake when i clicked the button. I sure hope i'm proved wrong because due to other issues i'm gonna have to keep him for now.

I didn't just mean DDG. Also Courtois and Ederson... the trend of cheap defenses and GKs is definitely not aspopular this year as it was in previous years. No i don't have the numbers to prove it so consider it a rant... 🙂

In the ten matches after the one with the penalty save, he still managed 3 scores of 10,9 and 9 (3CS, 3 save points and 8 baps). 28 points is equivalent to 4-5 CSs. That is still good value for a keeper who was 4.7 at the time. He also still has the fixtures to improve. Big Sam will eventually tighten up the ship again as we all know he is capable of that.

      I don't quite see it.

Let's rule out the penalty kick and just look at Pickford from GW19.

Like you say, DDG has kept double the number of clean sheets - 4 vs 2 for Pickford.

But even so, DDG outscores him 29 vs 28 because Pickford has achieved 7 save points - at least 1 in every single match.

So DDG got you 1 more point for one million more.

And consider that, when Pickford does keep his 2 clean sheets, with is superior save and recoveries, he's more likely to gain bonus.

True and all that with a defence including Martina, Kenny and Holgate. I can't see Sam coming out of thus transfer window with those three as first choice defenders. I have ddg myself but looking to switch to Pickford, Smeichel or Heaton for the run in. United fixtures stiffen quite a bit from gw28.

It's always an interesting one With DDG.
50% ownership in top 10k means it doesn't hurt to have him but isn't essential. Non-owners find a way to use the money.
Started with him successfully then moved him to Pope for the funds. Brought him back on and have now shifted him to Pickford.
What is clear that not having Utd cover in top 10k will effect your rank in the end due to the combined DDG Jones ownership.

This could be true but as always in FPL... you have to compare Kun to others in regards to their captain numbers; also, factoring his rotation risk... which could be very real starting next week even. They made need him @ Bristol, and then his weekend minutes may be in doubt.

I don’t think people are confirming transfers at this stage.. it’s more about canvassing all options ahead of the next gameweek. DZ is a great time to seek views.

As soon as lockout ends I’m looking at different possibilities for the following gameweek. Don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

    Hi all

Trying to plan ahead and won't be making any moves until after seeing Son tonight, but what would you prioritise in this team? I have 2.1 ITB and 1 FT available. Not afraid to take a hit.

    Elliot Speroni*
    Jones Otamendi Alonso Duffy Ogbonna
    Salah Lingard* Son* Sterling RLC
    Kane Firmino DLC

    1) Get a playing keeper
    2) Lingard --> Arnie
    3) Son --> Mahrez
    4) 2 and 3 for a -4
    5) 1 and 2 for a -4
    6) 1, 2 and 3 for a -8

I feel like a playing keeper is essential and kinda regret Lingard so I feel those two are the most NB moves, but am very tempted to get in Mahrez as well. It just depends on whether Son can keep his place and keep performing.

I feel Mahrez will be safe from rotation as Son has CL coming up soon.

Look forward to your opinions an insights. Thanks 🙂

I shipped him a couple of weeks ago for the Spurs DGW so I don't regret it much. Moved Morata out this week.

Thanks. Thinking the same. Might resort to just getting Foster so I can still afford Mahrez in the long run. Like the idea of Pick though

No point in getting Kun now. Should have been done before this GW. Hair goal and penalty vs Newcastle will not be every GW

He could have had a couple of assists too though. But I agree that it might not be worth getting him in now.

My dilemma is that im top in all my mini league's but I don't have Aguero but most of the chasing pack had him captain yesterday, but I need an 8 point hit to get him in and would need to rip my team apart, I currently have Kane firm sterling salah son Arnautovic and was wondering should I bring in hazard for Son ( I have funds itb also) as my free transfer as none of then have Hazard and ill give him the armband?

I am also weary of hazard vs bou. Its similar to Aguero factor vs Newcastle. Just wait for today. Son is still a bargain. Unfortunately I dont have funds to get haz in for son so planning willian mostly

Lingard owners what's your plan? Doubt he will play once Sanchez comes in.

Have 8.0 to spend, already have:
    Arnie Salah Sterling RLC(injured)

I went for Shaquri. Bit boring but i like Stokes fixtures and i only had enough for someone in that price range.
I your case i would go for perhaps Pogba.

I would look to stretch to Mahrez, Son or Sane if you can. Willian & Ramsey are probably my pick from the next bracket down.

How many outfield blankers are you planning to hold for the GW28 blanks?

Given their form, ownership and tied-up value, Jones, Alonso, Otamendi & Sterling are probably worth keeping (I've 2 of these). Otherwise it's probably time to ship the rest, right? I think 1 starter on the bench should be enough.

    Adrian
    Wimmer Otamendi Alonso
    Sterling Shaqiri Lanzini Son Arny
    Kane Aguero

    Elliot Quaner Duffy Schindler

    0.4 ITB & 1 FT

    B Lanzini > Walcott
    C Lanzini > Chamberlain

Stoke’s new right back (Bauer £4.5) got rave reviews after yesterdays game..

I know its only one game, but with nice fixtures he could be worth a punt if you’re in the market for a budget defender

Not worried about price rises since I have good team value and 2FT, but just wanted to get some feedback if possible from the forum here.

    Foster/Elliot
Alonso - Otamendi - Jones (Mee, Kenny)
    Sterling - Salah - Arnie - Lingard - Son
    Kane - Firmino (DCL)

Not sure what to use the transfers on. Much can change in a weeks time, but as of now I'm contemplating the following:

    Son & DCL -> Mahrez & Crouch

Crouch isn't much, but would give me the exact amount of cash to get Mahrez in given that he doesn't rise again before the deadline. Thoughts?

Today you mean? I really hope so! As I mentioned much can change, but even with a haul today I would gamble on his form taking a drop with his next 3 fixtures and Kane would be enough Spurs for the next three.
