Scout Notes – Aguero Roars Back To Form

Sergio Aguero provides the “perfect” hat-trick as Manchester City see off Newcastle United. Meanwhile, Nacho Monreal puts in a short but sensational shift as Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 4-1 and Stoke City begin life under Lambert with a much-needed win.

Four goals from nine Gameweek starts was hardly the sort of form to inspire an ownership boost, but back-to-back home fixtures helped spark increased investment in Sergio Aguero going into Gameweek 24.

Signed by 126,000 new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners before Saturday’s deadline, some 581,000 or 10.3% of managers handed him the armband; that included 18 of the top 100.

Aguero repaid that faith with a perfect hat-trick (head, right foot, left foot) as City dismissed Newcastle 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium, with the Argentine amassing a 17-point haul.

His recent output may have been modest, but history suggested that he would punish the Newcastle defence. He went into Saturday’s contest averaging a goal or assist every 31 minutes against the Magpies in home matches – including a legendary 20-minute five-goal haul in the 2015/16 campaign.

Seven shots on goal yesterday was impressive, even if his hat-trick was a little fortuitous given that his touch on Kevin De Bruyne’s cross for the opener involved, at best, the very furthest reaches of his fringe.

Aguero followed that up with more emphatic finishes from the penalty spot, when Raheem Sterling was fouled, and then from a Leroy Sane pass after a dazzling solo run from the German.

He is already installed as the most signed player ahead of a Gameweek 25 home clash with West Brom, with the striker likely to be backed by far more captaincies to increase the impact of any haul on ranks and mini-leagues.

Significantly, the move to Aguero from Harry Kane – who is yet to kick a ball in Gameweek 24 – is currently the most popular transfer in the last 24-hours with over 7000 making that swap. Kane will face the Manchester United defence at Wembley following today’s trip to Southampton, with Liverpool (a) and Arsenal (h) to come in Gameweeks 26 and 27.

Saturday’s victory saw all three of City’s top scoring midfielders provide assists, with De Bruyne moving to 12 for the season – the highest in FPL.

Sterling made it five goals and four assists from the last six Gameweeks, although his blank at Liverpool last time out had prompted 108,000 to sell him on, while he is also the fifth most sold asset so far ahead of Gameweek 25.

Sterling was unlucky not to score, denied by a close offside call and a superb save from Karl Darlow, but kept things ticking over by earning a fourth penalty of the season – more than any other player.

As for Sane, two assists and a goal in his last three Gameweeks suggests he’s over his mid-season slump: he now has 10 assists for the campaign.

A Newcastle breakaway goal from Jacob Murphy, with a Ciaran Clark assist, meant no clean sheet for Nicolas Otamendi, at 32.8% the most owned defender in the game.

The Argentine is now without a shut-out in his last three starts, having claimed four from the previous five. City have conceded in seven of their last eight home matches in all competitions.

Patience in Guardiola’s defence might well be on the wane as a result, although with the Baggies at home next, that should mean a stay of execution for Otamendi before the fixtures stiffen (bur LEI ars CHE) and decisions need to be made.

One punt that didn’t work out was tapping into the cut-price charms of Danilo (5.0), who was expected to replace the injured Fabian Delph at left-back. Pep Guardiola’s opted to use midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko in Delph’s absence.

Nacho dips in and out spectacularly

Nacho Monreal produced an extraordinary performance as Arsenal blew away Crystal Palace.

He took just 33 minutes to score and set up two further goals before being withdrawn as a precaution following a kick to the hamstring.

That was perhaps understandable given that he’d only just returned from a four-match injury lay-off. But his 16 points, boosted by maximum bonus, punished the 560,000+ managers who had sold him since his previous start in Gameweek 19.

During his absence, the four players who have filled in for him either at centre-half or on the left side of the defence – Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Sead Kolasinac, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers – contrived to score just one more point between them than Monreal managed in a touch over half an hour of glorious madness yesterday.

The Spaniard lined up at left-back in a 4-3-2-1 as Maitland-Niles dropped to the bench and Kolasinac slipped even further down the pecking order, his ownership is now less than half its Gameweek 16 peak of 863,000+.

The absence of Alexis Sanchez didn’t seem to impact on the Gunners, although they were helped by the return of Mesut Ozil, who provided an assist, and some truly woeful Palace defending in the first half.

Alexandre Lacazette hit his first goal since Gameweek 15, recording just three assists over that period, while Jack Wilshere impressed on what was his eighth consecutive start.

The other goals came from the returning Laurent Koscielny and Alex Iwobi, with Granit Xhaka chipping in with an assist.

Arsenal, however, remain a Fantasy force in transition, with new blood expected but not yet confirmed. Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s arrival provides an intriguing new midfield option at just 7.6, while it remains to be seen if Aaron Ramsey can regain a starting role as a 6.9 option; he missed out through illness yesterday.

As for Palace, a dark day was only slightly illuminated by Luka Milivojevic’s consolation goal from a Christian Benteke assist. That took the Serbian to an impressive four strikes from his previous eight Gameweek starts – with two of those goals arriving from open play.

The drubbing might also promote the claims of Julian Speroni to snatch back the goalkeeping jersey from Wayne Hennessey; Speroni is still owned by 5.2% of FPL managers.

New boss stokes recovery

Paul Lambert stamped his mark on his first match in charge of Stoke City and was rewarded with a vital 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town.

He opted for Mame Diouf as his central striker over the benched Peter Crouch and shifted to a back four in which Ryan Shawcross returned to help steer the Potters to a first clean sheet since Gameweek 10 – and only their third of the season.

Midfielders Eric Choupo-Moting and Xherdan Shaqiri boosted their Fantasy CVs with assists for the goals, the opener coming from Joe Allen, who added maximum bonus in an 11-point display.

Diouf’s (5.4) goal, meanwhile, moved him to 71 points for the season and up to 13.1 points per million – second only to Swansea City’s Jordan Ayew for value among forwards.

Goalkeeper Jack Butland was the major beneficiary of Saturday’s shut-out, making three saves and 16 recoveries – tied with his opposite number Jonas Lossl as the most of any stopper in the Gameweek.

That ensured he brought in two bonus points, while it’s also worth noting that Butland has accumulated 11 save points from his last seven Gameweeks, more than any other keeper.

Bruno Martins Indi dropped out of a defence in which new signing Moritz Bauer (4.5) would be the cheapest option should Lambert stick with the same back four.

Stoke’s schedule (WAT bou BHA lei sot) offers plenty of scope for more defensive joy, and Bauer impressed with his attacking endeavour at both Man United and in the win over the Terriers, although he did pick up a first booking on Saturday.

Quite difficult to say IMO. Sterling ticking along. Firmino goes on hot streaks. Versus two players who can haul or blank.

Don't do it, I'd rather have the two you've got than what you're trying to change to. You might also regret it in a few weeks when Aguero blanks in 28 and maybe when Jesus back and possibly rotating.

My dilemma is that im top in all my mini league's but I don't have Aguero but most of the chasing pack had him captain yesterday, but I need an 8 point hit to get him in and would need to rip my team apart, I currently have Kane firm sterling salah son Arnautovic and was wondering should I bring in hazard for Son ( I have funds itb also) as my free transfer as none of then have Hazard and ill give him the armband?.

Would work for me with Aguero 0.1, keeping Kenny and left in the box (fodder is 3.9 gk, 3.9 def & 4.5 fw)

Still not interesting though, I much prefer my Vardy-Aguero-Firmino frontline to getting Salah back.

  13. Gameweek 24 - Key Lessons So Far...

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Key lessons from Gameweek 24 so far…

Here are a few lessons to consider from the Gameweek so far. Feel free to comment on these and detail your own.

    Template busting Leicester march on.

Across all positions the Foxes have a strong option for their stellar run of games.

With their third clean sheet in a row Schmeichel and Maguire looks strong options, with the latter contining to impress in FPL’s bonus system.

In midfield Mahrez is continuing his fine form with a goal against Watford, while Albrighton looks a strong option with those on a budget.

Up front Vardy also impresses, scoring a penalty against the Hornets.

But get aboard their bandwagons quickly if you want to beat the template – as they will soon be the template.

Already Mahrez has had a price rise and is now among the top picks among the top 10K. He is the third most transferred in midfielder so far. Maguire is also the third most transferred in his position, while Vardy is the fourth most popular striker.

    Bargain basement shopping in Stoke

The Potters are another team with great fixtures and impressed in their first home game under Paul Lambert. Shaqiri in particular looked involved in all their attacking play and looks poised to haul.

Yet in the transfer market most managers look unconvinced, with just 3,000 or so bringing him in. With Lingard’s price looking likely to fall over the next week or so this Swiss maestro may be a savvy replacement.

And at the back there is further temptation – At 4.5 Bauer looks nailed and has helped earn his new side their first clean sheet since October.

Aguero raises the prospect of Kanexit once again

With three goals against Newcastle and a good run from Gamweek 25-27 some may be tempted to draft him in. But with money tight up top one option may be to ditch Kane temporarily for Spurs horror run over that time (MUN, liv, ARS).

As the festive Kanexit disaster showed this move is not without risk. But given Aguero’s form and fixture collision this swap may be something to consider. There is more specific discussion on this issue via Jet5605’s Hot Topic here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/01/20/scout-notes-hazard-hits-back/?hc_page=18#hc_comment_17534263

I've had Kane & Aguero since DGW22 and also have Alonso, Ota, Salah, Sterling, Son, Arnie & Lingard. However, I have no Utd defenders since flogging Jones off in GW13. Bringing in Lingard in GW23 was an error, I am looking at shipping him out....if only I had the cash for Mahrez, but that would mean having to downgrade Aguero or Sonny. Willian is looking very tempting at 6.7, I could get him if I also 'downgraded' the waste of space Zanka to Chilwell.

You are really exaggerating with your comment on the Spurs fixtures. Liverpool and Arsenal are both susceptible to conceding goals, it's only the Man United game where I'd be happy to go without Kane.

Liverpool at home are far different than away. Agree on the road they are prone to conceding but they are rock solid at home.

Man Utd is an awful game for them - Mourinho will bring his biggest bus.

Granted Arsenal could go either way. Hard to call that one. But definitely two very, very tricky ones for Kane there while Aguero faces easier sides.

As said this is something to conisder, and a move certainly with risk... but as the article above states already many are doing Kane to Aguero...and as with this week so far, it could be them that prosper.

Liverpool at home just conceded three to Man City. Granted City are a better attacking team than Spurs, but still wouldn't be comfortable without Kane in my team.

I agree with you about the Man United game - could easily be 0-0.

I will be tempted by Mahrez post 31st January - I'm not bringing in a player who could easily join Serie A or another league...
Whether he keeps his form post closure of the transfer window is another matter entirely...form could go off a cliff when he's off the shop window.

Could be, in the meantime he continues to bring in points and has great fixtures. I'll happily wave him off at the end of January if he can keep scoring before he jets off. The indications from Leicester seems to be he's staying put until the summer though...but by beginning of Feb he'll likely rise in price again.

The next 3 GWs (up to but not including GW28) are going to be ones where bad decisions will cost you and good decisions will reward you.

Spurs have 'bad' fixtures so will people drop Kane and Son? If so, who will they get in Aguero and Mahrez? Liverpool are being forgotten about as they have good fixtures, but only Salah and Firmino are highly owned.

So would you have a player who at 0-0 gets subbed on 61 mins lose his clean sheet if they concede?

Rules are rules, just unfortunate with Christensen...

TFF offer partial clean sheets and they work great, no problems.

          I personally think:

Clean sheet for 60 minutes - 4 points

Clean sheet for 30 to 60 minutes - 2 points

I don't understand why Official FPL persists with a rule that enrages huge numbers of people.

            I would be different.

Play less than 45 mins and don't concede = 0pts
Play at least 45 mins but less than 90 mins and don't concede = 2pts
            Play 90 mins and don't concede = 4pts

Play less than 45 mins = 1pt appearance
Play more than 45 mins = 2pt appearance

              Nice.

Official FPL needs to get with the times and implement something. I hope Mark will lobby them for it. I think it would be incredibly well received like the free hit chip.

Exactly. With injury time last week, Christensen made it past the 60 minute mark.

It's all these bureaucratic technicalities which really irk people and detract from the enjoyment of the game.

People love points. That's why bonus points were introduced. That's why people argue about the length of Aguero's quiff.

Said before. 2pts for a 45mins+ appearance. Partial clean sheet points if you play 45mins+ without conceding. A football game is 90 mins so 50% for a 45mins CS and appearance makes sense to me.

I agree. When I switched from TFF to FPL last season, I found the 60 minute rule a bit odd. You're basically being excused for a poor defensive performance in 33% of the match.

I also found a paltry 4 points for a striker goal difficult to begin with. Costa was scoring for me but hardly getting any points!

Although most swapped Kane out for rooney or Firmino which is ok, but not if they captained elsewhere and it backfired.

I think one factor that plays into the Kane-Kun-Kane plan is how long you've had Kane. Being someone that has had Kane for quite some time, my Selling Price is 12.7. So swapping to Kun will leave me 0.3 short in being able to buy him back, and that's a real issue for me. I would certainly prefer to have Aguero for the next few GWs, but can't justify the cost.

On lesson ro learn for me is that it is always and only the big names, eg Hazard and Agüero, that one needs to be wary of, when considering rankings and mini-leagues. I really doubt the overall impact of our other choices. This week I ditched Hazard (and DCL) and after lengthy deliberations and digesting the scout cast on templates, decided to get Arnie and Firmino rather than Agüero and a 4.8 midfielder. It hurts now and I will rely on Kane (C) to be the painkiller tonight.

Augero at home and the sole striker playing for Man City. Most obvious captain choice of the season and I almost didnt do it as I started to listen to other players talking up Kane and down Kun. Just hold your nerve.

      1. Just get the players you expect to score the most points in the next few game-weeks. Doesn't matter whether or not they're in the current template, but if they aren't and they do well then they might become part of a future one. This is nothing new.

      2. There are always teams with good fixtures, but not all of their players will score lots of fantasy points (remember the hype about Southampton players such as Cedric at the start of the season, for example?). This is also nothing new.

      3. Kun's hat-trick and Spurs' difficult fixtures certainly raise the question of whether we ought to play the hokey-cokey with Kun and Kane, or get both, or have we missed the boat? is it better to stick with what we've got, as it was perhaps better to have stuck with Salah recently rather than to use a couple of transfers or hits to first sell him and then buy him back?

      4. One thing that we have learnt this game-week is that Lingard and Rooney may not be worth keeping.

      5. But we still don't know whether there will be blanks in GW28, or whether there might even be a DGW26. So should we be cutting down on players who might not play in GW28, preparing for a possible DGW26, or just muddle through and hope for the best?

      Two things:

      1. Everyone should have Chillwell at 4.3. Forget Maguire who is too expensive and why you would want a defender who scores a goal every 15 matches or so beats me.

      2. Vardy and Mahrez are red herrings. Their underlying stats are a real concern from this gameweek so don't go expecting too many returns in the near future. Avoid them.

C or E. Interesting how a lot of them involve Arsenal at home. Arsenal were close to being a title challenging team IMO, but didn't spend the cash on two big name signings to get them there. Now they are going backwards because they have lost Sanchez and will likely lose Ozil. Their squad is being depleted too by selling Ox, Walcott and Coquelin.
