Dugout Discussion – Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur

Sunday treats us to a single, but nonetheless crucial, Gameweek 24 fixture as Southampton welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St Mary’s at 4pm.

After Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick at home to Newcastle yesterday, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are looking for a repeat performance from Harry Kane today.

Having put three past the Saints in a 5-2 win in Gameweek 20, the Spurs frontman is the number one captain choice in FPL, handed the armband by 29.3%.

However, the visitors’ potential at both ends of the pitch has been dented by the absence of key duo Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen through illness.

Sold by over 96,000 FPL managers last week, the Dane could now be subject to a late-January exodus – Mauricio Pochettino’s men play Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal in the subsequent three rounds of fixtures.

Up against a defence that has mustered just a single clean sheet in their last 11 at home, owners of Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min will be optimistic of returns – the pair plundered 15 and 14 points respectively in that recent triumph over the Saints.

In defence, Ben Davies is handed a fourth straight start for only the second time this term, with Danny Rose again missing out due to an ongoing knee complaint.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I have no issue with the scoutcast team getting things wrong. We all make mistakes (me included) and you have to give them credit for putting forward an opinion in front of 35,000 watchers and listeners. But what I would like to know is will they hold their hands up and acknowledge they made a mistake to pour a cold bucket of water over the idea of bringing Aguero in?

2 scoutcasts in a row everyone was anti-Aguero and that's fine. I wasn't arguing against them. But let's admit when we get things wrong. What's wrong with that?

It turns out, Aguero WAS the right way to go.

Our opinions on the ScoutCast are based on our own teams, our own situations, budgets etc. We're honest is saying that none of us were going to bring him in and we didn't.

We have to be able to give personal opinions without being petrified of misleading folk so we have to have faith that folk will make up their own minds. Otherwise the ScoutCast becomes a situation where we will be afraid to say a word that might backfire. Pretty bloody tedious.

Of course we'd all have liked Aguero in for GW24 but none of his performances leading up to yesterday pointed to hat-trick and nor did his points tallies. Plus, one was a pen, one was barely a touch, the other put on a plate by Sane's brilliance.

Fair enough if you and others think that Aguero is still the player he was. I still don't.

I should be able to give that opinion without being asked to give public apologies should it be seen as a "mistake".

        It's getting ridiculous.

And you obviously just ignore everything we do and say. Like the Scout Squad - where Jonty, myself and Paul ranked him second in our forward picks.

          http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/01/17/the-scout-squad-gameweek-24-3/

Plus he was top of RMT as detailed in the Captain Sensible article.

So it's not like we didn't acknowledge the danger of him delivering. He wasn't in the Picks due to budget - an error but we also explained that in the text. And that was at the crux of it. I believe getting Aguero was surgery for us on the ScoutCast - hits for some - and we weren't prepared to do that.

You should considering having another guest on the show who has different opinions and strategy about FPL. Having 5 guys with the same team, same ideas, same trades gets a bit boring.

I like all 5 of the guys on the Scoutcast but you are all to similar (maybe not Granville)

The 'whats your trade and captain this week?' at the end of every podcast is pointless as you all do basically the same thing

Granville has uncharacteristically ended up with he template

He offers a different view usually bit the problem here is again different view usually ends up with a much mediocre rank and that's not something people would be inclined to follow or listen

I would be interested more in different ways of thinking than simply different players in the team. Having a stats expert as a guest, for example, could help us understand things that we commonly get wrong. Having a (semi-)pro footballer talk about who they see potential in. Things like this make it more interesting AND more useful.

However, I'm still happy to watch and enjoy in its current format, but I use it more as a springboard for ideas, and to check my previous thoughts, rather than as any real guide to players or strategies.

That's fair enough. The mood music on the scoutcast was anti Aguero across two episodes. Andy said he was a "nostalgia pick". That's fine - I pretty much agreed with everything that was said. I not trying to be "ah-ha, I caught you out, you predicted something that didn't come true!" And yes we can't look at things in isolation, we need to judge over a longer time period.

I'm not asking for a public apology or anything like that. I got it wrong with Aguero. Maybe we all did. There's no harm in saying that. It doesn't take anything away from anyone. You will all still have our respect and your opinion and advice will still be listened to and valued. I just think it's refreshing - for me personally at least - to start saying "Okay, I got this one wrong. You can't win them all." I don't see what is wrong with that. That's what I would like to do in the future. No one is going to give 100% perfect advice every time. And I do get its more difficult with the viewership being so high to come down on one side of the fence and keep faith with an opinion, so you guys deserve a lot of credit for that. I know I will get a lot of stick for this, and who knows maybe I'm wrong. Maybe long term being reluctant to admit mistakes is good. You took a lot of stick for supporting Kane through his drought and ultimately you we're proved right. So perhaps Aguero won't work out long term.

What would be the point of saying, 'I got it wrong'? Maybe if they went back in time, they would make the same decision again anyway. Aguero wasn't guaranteed to score with his hair and get a penalty.

It would be more useful and refreshing for the Scouts to be aware of their bias, and to offer advice to the listeners, rather than mostly talk about their own teams, because they kind of perpetuate a template by doing that. But although they peddle myths about how stats, luck, football, etc, I still think they do a decent job of painting the stories from their own perspective. It's not like they're purposefully duping us into believing there is only one way to play. It's just the limitations of having 5 or 6 regulars, who only play FPL as a hobby, repeatedly talk about their hobby for a large audience.

Maybe they haven't got it wrong though. We all said Mark got it wrong about Kane but he was proved right in the end. But no one will ever get it right 100% of the time in FPL. If we were more "look no one is perfect" and less "lol you got it wrong" then maybe the FPL Pundits would be bolder with their predictions and advice. I remember TriggerLips said he always wanted to advocate maverick moves in FPL but feared the backlash. That isn't a good situation for anyone. High profile FPL People shouldn't feel like they have to be conservative in their advice and opinions, and the community and the audience shouldn't be quick to pounce - they should be more accepting and more nonchalant if they get 1 thing out of 20 wrong. These two things would result in better discussions and FPL help all round.

I agree, but your message is now completely muddled. You are the one putting pressure on the Scouts to admit mistakes that might not even be mistakes. Judging quickly and firmly. Just let it be 🙂

What's more conservative, saying that Aguero will score well so get him in for Newcastle at home, or saying that he doesn't look the player he was so don't take a hit and sell player X, avoiding captaining Kane to do it?

I don't think we are hampered on the ScoutCast and come across as conservative.

Like I say, it's very easy to say Aguero will score well in GW24 so sign him. As I pointed out, in other articles like Squad and Captain Sensible, we did say that.

But it's far harder to be given the scenario whereby a manager has to sell a Christensen at Brighton (which should have been 6 points), not captain Kane (which could have been more than 8 points) and take a hit into the bargain for an 11.7 striker with 4 goals in 9 starts.

On the ScoutCast we are all in those kind of scenarios and, given the variables we'd all considered, none of us went for Aguero. I reckon there were loads in that type of situation who now regret it but they're probably reasonable enough to accept why they arrived at their decision.

There is a variance in the game and maybe your desicion would have been better if we did the same scenario 100 times.

You are definetly one of the best players in the world, and I enjoy watching you and for instance Jay share some of your thoughts ever gmw. People with not the same skillevel as you are to resultoriented.

I admit my mistakes all the time but they are just that. My mistakes for my team. I was thinking of doing Christensen to Chillwell and doing Morata to Aguero two weeks ago with GW24 in mind and never did. Kicking myself but had the reasons to make those decisions and I'm fine with it.

But I'm kicking myself in private. I don't have to come on here every week and admit where I made mistakes.

If I was sat with a manager who could have done Aguero their FT for a Morata I probably would have told them to do it.

We all knew that Aguero would come out of the GW with some points. Would those points justify a hit, taking the armband off Kane and losing a premium defender? I personally didn't think so.

There are a huge amount of variables. It's very difficult to give advice that fits all. That works for all teams. Give me a scenario and I can give you an opinion. And, surprise, surprise, sometimes that advice will turn out to be wrong.

When goals and points are won for a touch of a fringe, that's hardly surprising.

When such fine margins are at play, we all make mistakes and have to stand by them and not blame others.

To be fair, I remember you saying things like the GW3 wildcard and not getting Ben Davies in was a mistake. But it is tough. There was so much pressure on you to stop publicly backing Harry Kane at one point. I couldn't understand at the time why you were going against the weatherstorm of anti Kane sentiment and still being pro-Harry. And in that instance you were vindicated for digging your heels in. It's a tough gig I guess and it only gets tougher the more people watched. I remember when Barack Obama went on live TV and simply said "you know what I screwed up". He received so much praise for that. Sometimes it is tempting to be blunt like that; sometimes it works. But like the above Kane example proved, often it is right to stick to your guns.

After watching Firmino & Aguero at Anfield my mind was made up on keeping Firmino..

I didn’t need to watch the scoutcast to confirm what I watched

The guys on it do a fantastic job, but like the rest of us they cant see into the future..

You should appreciate the free time they give up to do it...

once jesus was injured aguero was a solid pick and with his fixtures after liverpool and spurs fixtures turning you should have started planning and shifting funds to have the option to bring him in this week. If you wait and react after the player scores well then you will always be a step behind.

Will you accept that FPL, and indeed, football is not a science.

People's opinions are just that. They are subjective.
Their opinions are no more valid than your's or anybody else's.

I have the power of thought, and as such I can make decisions for myself. I can seek advice, and can choose for myself whether to act on it, or to disregard the advice.

The Scoutcast team are, as you said, brave enough to share their thoughts with all of us. Thank you to them.

I watch the scoutcast every week and it usually helps me make up my mind when I'm not sure... It didn't keep me from bringing Aguero in for -4 and captaining him (I also often don't follow their advice and regret it). It's a great help to have them, their weekly overview is complete and interesting. This still gives you a lot of room for your own option. Their advice is more often good than bad, look at the mods an cons average score, it's impressive, last years no 1 is last.
