Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Saints Frustrate Kane

Spurs can only draw with Southampton as a single goal for Harry Kane helps Fantasy managers who backed a certain alternative big-name striker steal a march on their rivals.

It says something about this season when captaining, and in fact even owning, Sergio Aguero can turn out to be something of a differential.

But Gameweek 24 is starting to look like a memorable one for the 1.3 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who held Aguero and in particular the 43% of those (581,000+) who handed the armband to the Argentine. His hat-trick and 17 points on Saturday easily eclipsed the work of Harry Kane at Southampton today.

The Spurs forward, owned by 48.4% and captained by 29.3% of all managers, scored and was awarded two bonus points in the 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

That produced ‘only’ eight points, handing those on Aguero a big advantage in the rankings shake-up, with the difference felt most markedly by those in the top 100.

Some 53 opted for Kane as their captain, and only 18 for Aguero, as a consistently unpredictable season provided another twist.

Only one of Kane’s three efforts was on target in Sunday’s encounter, and he missed a big chance late on to narrow the Gameweek 24 performance gap with Aguero.

Kane’s ownership must now face up to their 13.0-priced main man embarking on a three-match run involving Man United and Arsenal at home and Liverpool away.

On the upside, he is currently on his most consistent run of the season, scoring in four of his last five starts, and although the upcoming matches are undeniably testing, his record in those fixtures is generally excellent.

He’s scored six goals in as many appearances against the Gunners and four in six matches with Liverpool. Only against United has he suffered, with just one goal from seven encounters.

So while the armband might not be heading his way again in the immediate future, his ownership may not suffer too much.

Even so, Kane is already suffering an ownership loss, with over 17,000 moving him out, and 11,000 of those swapping to Aguero so far.

Spurs assets blunted

Illness kept Christian Eriksen out of Sunday’s contest.

That weakened Spurs’ attacking threat, with Son Heung-min in particular producing a lacklustre performance in which he failed to have a single attempt on goal.

Then again, the South Korean’s away form has been poor all season. Only one of his eight goals has come on the road and he was replaced by Erik Lamela after 70 uninspiring minutes against the Saints.

It should also be noted that Mauricio Pochettino confirmed post-match that Eriksen was not the only player unwell heading into Sunday’s draw. That might also have been a factor behind Son’s early withdrawal when Spurs were chasing a winning goal.

Both Eriksen and Son are now among the most sold ahead of Gameweek 25 and the start of that nasty little run, even though the Dane has produced returns in seven of his last nine appearances and Son will be facing United and Arsenal at Wembley. Indeed, with Kane, there are currently three Spurs players in the top seven for transfers-out.

At the back, Ben Davies was the only defender to emerge with a decent return as he provided the corner from which Kane equalised and also took home maximum bonus.

He was only on set-piece duties due to Eriksen’s absence, but that’s now five assists for the season from the Welsh international and Danny Rose’s continuing injury issues mean that Davies at least remains a reliable starter.

Faith in Spurs defence is otherwise in decline in light of the schedule to come and a run of just three clean sheets from the last eight Gameweeks.

But the potential return of Toby Alderweireld in the FA Cup next weekend might persuade Mauricio Pochettino to move back to a 3-4-2-1, having preferred 4-2-3-1 of late.

And Spurs with and without Alderweireld are a different beast entirely.

They’ve kept clean sheets in 50% of their matches with him in the side, and just 35.7% without, while conceding an average of 0.7 goals per match with him and 1.1 when he’s absent.

The Belgian will no doubt be eased back into the swing of things once he finally returns, but if he can provide the required stability to Spurs’ backline, they have a fine schedule once the next three matches are done with.

Only a trip to Chelsea and Man City at home should provide major challenges to Pochettino’s side across the final 11 Gameweeks of the season.

Interest in Saints stays muted

Southampton showed a level of grit to negate Spurs, but the fact that they had to rely on an own goal from Davinson Sanchez to find a way to score spoke volumes for their ongoing toothlessness in attack.

They’ve averaged just a goal a match this season and have a chronic lack of options up front, with Manolo Gabbiadini again failing today, which prompted teenager Michael Obafemi to be given a chance in place of the Italian late on.

But there’s minimal Fantasy interest to be found anywhere among Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad, with goalkeeper Fraser Forster (4.9%) and defender Ryan Bertrand (4.8%), who provided the assist for the Sanchez own goal, their most popular assets.

Forster is not even in the side at the moment as Alex McCarthy (4.4) was handed a fourth straight start in his place.

Nonetheless, the upcoming schedule now looks vital, and may yet bring them back into consideration.

Six of their next eight matches are against relegation rivals (BHA wba STK new swa whu) in a run that could well determine Southampton’s top-flight status.

The fixtures take a turn for the worse again from Gameweek 33, so it’s probably a case of now or never for managers to invest in Saints assets.

Based on their current form – they’ve not won since Gameweek 13 – it’s starting to look like never, unless things improve markedly and immediately.

Possibly never been happier with my FPL team in 11 seasons of playing, rank nothing amazing but climbing nicely. Still feeling the DCL vs Niasse blunder but got a nice nice mix of essentials and differentials, good fixtures and future plans in my head.

9 days to dodge injuries now!

    Hennessey / Speroni
    Alonso / Otamendi / Jones / Christensen / Mbemba
Salah / Sterling / Arnautovic / Choupo Moting / Ox

Sorry to burst you bubble, but many people do, or will easily manage to when the time comes. Teamplate isn't to have all of those players, just a few + a playing 5th def (not Mbemba).

Besides, in the pursuit of greatness, I wouldn't compare your team to the 'done' thing around here. I think you could get more points by ensuring you have 11 players in GW28. Don't you?

Yeah. Just feel I'd rather make moves like Christensen > VVD, Otamendi > Maguire when the time comes rather than have a 2 point defender using up funds sitting on my bench.

            1. Deulofail
              • 8 Years
              6 years, 2 months ago

VVD and Maguire are 2-point defenders? If you feel that way, I wouldn't bother buying them even for the BGW! Haha

But if you do it all at once, you'll need to take a hit. As I said, with no hits, you'll have to spend every FT until GW28 on a defensive transfer if you want 11 players. Then bench Sterling, Agureo and 1 defender (Alonso?).

That's if all 4 teams blank.

Sorry I'm wrong. You would still only have 10 players. So you need 1 hit if you want 11 players.

Both those moves are great imo. Depends on you overall plans for your team. Maybe you wanna downgrade Lingard to Albrighton or cheaper, or get Ox if he looks good again tomorrow (today). But maybe Son could become Mkhi or Walcott or Pogba (if they have no BGW28). So that much is up to you 🙂

My Firmino, Salah and Coutinho triple up worked great back in December.

I’d wait to see how they go against Swansea first, and if Liverpool fire in a few goals, go for it. Of course cheaper options than Mane are available so consider all your options.

I got burnt by Mane so am hesitant. I had Salah only going into GW15 with Liverpool playing Brighton. I thought pool would destroy them so I wanted to double up so I got Mane after considering between him and Firmino or Coutinho.

I was part right as Liverpool won 5-1, but Mane was benched. Firmino scored a brace and Coutinho a goal and three assists.....haha, I was gutted

When do people plan on using the FH, BB and TC?

Im strongly considering using the FH in bgw31, as a lot of the top teams most likely will be blanking..

TC and BB will be used in the dgw's I think

    1. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
        6 years, 2 months ago

I think this is the best solution - especially if you can deal with the potential blanks in 28 without too much trouble.
31 is going to be a bigger blank I think

      • Deulofail
        • 8 Years

Then why advise people to use it in GW28?

I mistook the bgw28 for being the bgw31.. because you kind of replied in a way that it seemed certain he would be missing his chelsea players...which it will in bgw31, but not as certain in bgw28

Chance of Chelsea blank in BGW31 is around 55.93%. I'm sorry for the manner of my reply... haha

              • 7 Years
              6 years, 2 months ago

I really dont rate these percentages. Id say there is a bigger chance of Chelsea not blanking gw28 rather than not blanking gw31 solely based on the fact that Chelsea play Arsenal away in EFL Cup, and has an easier opponent in the FA cup (and dont know the opponent in the next round of the FA cup)

No worries by the way. No offence taking, and I understand why you wrote like you did hence your explanation 🙂

But you were saying it was certain Chelsea would blank in GW31. That's why you mistook my assertion that Chelsea would definitely blank to mean GW31. But it's not certain, it's 55%, or 40% or 70%, whatever you like! Haha

Plus I didn't say it was certain, I actually said, "if all 4 teams blank".

Anyway, this is boring. No hard feelings.

Writing a long reply, to end it with 'this is boring' really dont make much sense. But fair enough. Could have written 'more likely' if that would have pleased you more, haha.

Jeez. Give it a rest. I didn't understand what you were saying, because you misunderstood what I was saying AND you thought Chelsea were certain to blank in GW31. There was a big gap in what you were saying and the world where things make sense to me. I thought there were was no offence taken.

Ruth's comment here is completely irrelevant to the point either of us are making. The accuracy of these numbers is neither here nor there. The point is that Chelsea are not even nearly certain of blanking in GWs 28 or 31, regardless of the probability.

I'm assuming you just didn't know the possible dates and teams that would blank, but now you can't let it go, can't lose face.

In hindsight, the value of the big hitting defenders is clear.
Comparing my team to The Watchlist
I have the top 2 FWD
4 of top 5 MID (plus Sane)
And 4 of the top 12 DEF
...and yet my ranking is still falling, now outside the top 1m.
The big difference is that I have not owned the top 3 def. (Ota, Alonso and Jones).

At various times I've viewed Ota, Alonso & to a lesser extent Jones as 'too obvious' options and have been crushed every time.

One Firm, one Salah, with Mane assists makes almost everyone happy.
My main rival have Firm(c) so he would take 1st place if he scores 2.

Since the summer I had been making the case for City refusing to sign Sanchez. I didn't want an arrogant and entitled (but admittedly very good) player taking away playtime from players like Sane, Sterling, and Jesus. It seemed like a ludicrous stance to many on here at the time, but I truly
felt he was an unnecessary burden that would disrupt our team rather than help it.

Fast forward a few months, and even I'm shocked (but very happy) at the results of this move. The one thing that I respected about Sanchez is that his primary concern seemed to be playing under Pep. But now we see it was all about the money. And I am so glad City didn't cough it up. We didn't let a player push us around. And we showed faith in our younger players for once.

I am looking forward to many more years of watching Sane, Sterling, Jesus, and Bernardo Silva get better and better.

The money is stupid alright but I think he will help ensure United finish in second at the very least! Sanchez, Lingard & Marital behing Lukaku looks very powerful!

City backing their young players is the right decision. Sanchez would have taken minutes away and aged the frontline (him and Kun).

The slot/money should be used to get a elite CB

Oh my lordy. A higher salary is a higher salary. You can give the extra to charity, you can travel the world for longer, you can do less punditry in retirement if that's what you want, you can invest in hovercar development. I would have less respect for him if he went just for Pep and forgot about the money haha. Especially since he would probably even play less football at City.

So you think the fact that this player who caused a ruckus at another team suddenly deserves a higher salary than players who have committed to the club for years? Aguero, Silva, De Bruyne? The players would not be impressed with that. City's wage bill has also decreased massively over the years, many players took pay cuts. Sanchez's salary would've really irritated these loyal players. And I think Pep understands that.

Um. I said nothing about him deserving anything mate. You were judging him for not taking a pay cut compared to his potential wage at United: "But now we see it was all about the money." I'm saying I think taking the extra money is not a bad thing for a person to do.

Oh it's not bad at all, I think it's worked out great for Sanchez. My point is that his whole premise for a move was money, and he would win in any case, but City would be loosing in terms of morale and a new expensive asset.

The man can make how much he wants, I've got no problem with that as long as it doesn't disrupt my team.

I think it's more along the lines of feeling annoyed that he saw us more as a financial tool than a good project to play for (which in fairness, I can't really blame him for). The respect I have for him is invalid compared to the lack of respect he would've commanded in the locker room.

I thought his premise for a move was to get away from Arsenal and play for a team more likely to win titles, which united is imo. City simply didnt rate him as high as United did. It was not all Sanchez choice. A deal had to be made with Arsenal.

So basically united came up with a better offer in terms of an agreement with both Arsenal and Sanchez respectively

Even as a United fan, I agree. I do think everybody won here.
City get to build with youngsters and stick to their principles.
Utd get one of the best players in the league.
Sanchez and agents get the money they wanted.
The league gets to keep Sanchez.
Even Arsenal can finally (try to) move on.

City have been acting arrogantly in this case.

They didn't put in an attempt to sign Sanchez before deadline day, and they used their agreement with Sanchez as leverage to push down the price in this window.

Manchester United didn't screw around with Sanchez and Arsenal once they were interested.

United have a bit more money to throw at a star player though, I guess. City have a deep, quality side, and I believe them when they said that it didn't make financial sense to spend more - not just because of the offence to other players in the team (if there would actually be any offence), but because he wouldn't improve the team enough in the short or long term. United on the other hand value Sanchez much higher because obviously he will be more valuable to them.
