Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Saints Frustrate Kane

Spurs can only draw with Southampton as a single goal for Harry Kane helps Fantasy managers who backed a certain alternative big-name striker steal a march on their rivals.

It says something about this season when captaining, and in fact even owning, Sergio Aguero can turn out to be something of a differential.

But Gameweek 24 is starting to look like a memorable one for the 1.3 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who held Aguero and in particular the 43% of those (581,000+) who handed the armband to the Argentine. His hat-trick and 17 points on Saturday easily eclipsed the work of Harry Kane at Southampton today.

The Spurs forward, owned by 48.4% and captained by 29.3% of all managers, scored and was awarded two bonus points in the 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

That produced ‘only’ eight points, handing those on Aguero a big advantage in the rankings shake-up, with the difference felt most markedly by those in the top 100.

Some 53 opted for Kane as their captain, and only 18 for Aguero, as a consistently unpredictable season provided another twist.

Only one of Kane’s three efforts was on target in Sunday’s encounter, and he missed a big chance late on to narrow the Gameweek 24 performance gap with Aguero.

Kane’s ownership must now face up to their 13.0-priced main man embarking on a three-match run involving Man United and Arsenal at home and Liverpool away.

On the upside, he is currently on his most consistent run of the season, scoring in four of his last five starts, and although the upcoming matches are undeniably testing, his record in those fixtures is generally excellent.

He’s scored six goals in as many appearances against the Gunners and four in six matches with Liverpool. Only against United has he suffered, with just one goal from seven encounters.

So while the armband might not be heading his way again in the immediate future, his ownership may not suffer too much.

Even so, Kane is already suffering an ownership loss, with over 17,000 moving him out, and 11,000 of those swapping to Aguero so far.

Spurs assets blunted

Illness kept Christian Eriksen out of Sunday’s contest.

That weakened Spurs’ attacking threat, with Son Heung-min in particular producing a lacklustre performance in which he failed to have a single attempt on goal.

Then again, the South Korean’s away form has been poor all season. Only one of his eight goals has come on the road and he was replaced by Erik Lamela after 70 uninspiring minutes against the Saints.

It should also be noted that Mauricio Pochettino confirmed post-match that Eriksen was not the only player unwell heading into Sunday’s draw. That might also have been a factor behind Son’s early withdrawal when Spurs were chasing a winning goal.

Both Eriksen and Son are now among the most sold ahead of Gameweek 25 and the start of that nasty little run, even though the Dane has produced returns in seven of his last nine appearances and Son will be facing United and Arsenal at Wembley. Indeed, with Kane, there are currently three Spurs players in the top seven for transfers-out.

At the back, Ben Davies was the only defender to emerge with a decent return as he provided the corner from which Kane equalised and also took home maximum bonus.

He was only on set-piece duties due to Eriksen’s absence, but that’s now five assists for the season from the Welsh international and Danny Rose’s continuing injury issues mean that Davies at least remains a reliable starter.

Faith in Spurs defence is otherwise in decline in light of the schedule to come and a run of just three clean sheets from the last eight Gameweeks.

But the potential return of Toby Alderweireld in the FA Cup next weekend might persuade Mauricio Pochettino to move back to a 3-4-2-1, having preferred 4-2-3-1 of late.

And Spurs with and without Alderweireld are a different beast entirely.

They’ve kept clean sheets in 50% of their matches with him in the side, and just 35.7% without, while conceding an average of 0.7 goals per match with him and 1.1 when he’s absent.

The Belgian will no doubt be eased back into the swing of things once he finally returns, but if he can provide the required stability to Spurs’ backline, they have a fine schedule once the next three matches are done with.

Only a trip to Chelsea and Man City at home should provide major challenges to Pochettino’s side across the final 11 Gameweeks of the season.

Interest in Saints stays muted

Southampton showed a level of grit to negate Spurs, but the fact that they had to rely on an own goal from Davinson Sanchez to find a way to score spoke volumes for their ongoing toothlessness in attack.

They’ve averaged just a goal a match this season and have a chronic lack of options up front, with Manolo Gabbiadini again failing today, which prompted teenager Michael Obafemi to be given a chance in place of the Italian late on.

But there’s minimal Fantasy interest to be found anywhere among Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad, with goalkeeper Fraser Forster (4.9%) and defender Ryan Bertrand (4.8%), who provided the assist for the Sanchez own goal, their most popular assets.

Forster is not even in the side at the moment as Alex McCarthy (4.4) was handed a fourth straight start in his place.

Nonetheless, the upcoming schedule now looks vital, and may yet bring them back into consideration.

Six of their next eight matches are against relegation rivals (BHA wba STK new swa whu) in a run that could well determine Southampton’s top-flight status.

The fixtures take a turn for the worse again from Gameweek 33, so it’s probably a case of now or never for managers to invest in Saints assets.

Based on their current form – they’ve not won since Gameweek 13 – it’s starting to look like never, unless things improve markedly and immediately.

Early BGW / DGW Strategy Thoughts...

Whilst we've got a 10 day window coming up, I'm giving the BGW / DGWs some thought. Have already started making some transfers to accommodate for this, but wanted to get your thoughts on chip strategy over this period...

Assuming all chips are in hand...

BGW 28 - Might not be a blank at all given the gap midweek following this GW, so minimise blankers only as a precaution
BGW 31 - Use transfers between now and then to reduce number of blankers
GW 33 - *Wildcard* to maximise following DGW, plus plan for last 5 GWs
DGW 34 - *Bench Boost* with 15 players doubling
BGW 35 - Use wildcard in GW 33 to reduce number of missing players
DGW 37 - *Free Hit* to bring in 11 doublers

This would assume the logic that Free Hit is more effective in picking 11 DGW players, rather being used to reduce losses in a BGW.

    Thoughts on this?

It means I'm asking the question, have I just missed the best opportunity to play Triple Captain chip on Aguero!

You be lost me 🙂 ...is there not a big blank gw in 31 ? I'd use free hit then

But using Free Hit is most valuable in a DGW surely?

Well no as bench boost or treble captain couldn't be used at the same time

There’s 2 big blanks 31 & 35 (on top of the small but significant 28) and you only get 1 FH, I’m thinking the 31 is easier to reduce blankers because if GW34 is a DGW then it will be v hard to get out all the blankers for GW35 ( then get thh back for GW37)

I honestly think people are focusing too much on DGW's.... Right there you are saying you have already started making transfers for the BGW/DGW and you've listed another 6 gameweeks where all the planning is for these GW's again.

I am looking at the next two gameweeks coming up now and focusing on getting as many points as possible in every gameweek. I refuse to alter transfer plans just because a player has a blank in 4 weeks time. I believe this has the potential to hurt the rankings a lot more than the damage it could potentially do...

Just look at the double we had just recently with Spurs and WHam. There were several big hitters who matched or better the Spurs assets... A double gameweek is not a guarantee for lots of points.

Looking at Ben Crellins brilliant spreadsheet...

Liverpool, United, Spurs, City and Chelsea are all likely to blank in GW31, meaning at some point they double too.

Decent plan. I think a lot depends on GW31 and how many teams get through there - if it's 10 sides (i.e. 5 matches) that's a pretty valid free hit imo. Having a team chock full of those players should give you ~30pts more than rivals who are muddling through with around 5 players (30 points gain being my subjective threshold for a successful free hit).
But if there's less teams in that GW due to more advancing the cup then thought, then I might be tempted to write it off and join you on the 37 doublers with FH.

I never tend to plan anything until we know all the facts, btw - but it can be temporarily absorbing I spose 😀

        Agreed.

The likes of Mahrez / Vardy, Shaqiri, Eve def, Wilson / Ibe are all looking like minimizing the blanks at the minute. And are good picks in the short term too.

It feels a happy coincidence that these players are both looking decent in terms of fixtures and may have no blank (assuming WBA lose to Liverpool this weekend Bournemouth have a game in 31)

I’m doing something similar except the WC on GW 33 will be the heavy hitter/DGW team for the remainder of the season and then use the free hit for the blanks on GW 35, that way I’m not planning a team to accommodate both DGW and non blankers (cos there will be a few that have a DGW and a blank in this period

The Kane vs Aguero debate .
Man united have a good defensive record bit after that, Kane could easily score against Liverpool and arsenal. On the other hand, Auero has great fixtures and off the back of a hattrick. Its tempting but I dont think Kane is the one I want to lose

I'm on a decent score this week, but it could have been so much better if i wasnt such a thick. I had two free transfers, I dropped Rocharlison for Albrighton. For my second transfer I was all set to to Kabasale to Maguire. Then I was thinking, well my keepers are Foster and Elliot. I really need to upgrade. So instead of getting Schmeicel, I brought in Courtois. Then of course he was ruled out. So instead of just leaving it I brought in Ederson because of the two home games. Obviously that didn't work out either!

Moral of the story, don't overthink! Go with your gut

Assuming Mkhi/Sanchez is a done deal, what transfers are people hoping to see go through before the window closes for the sake of FPL?

Aubameyang to Arsenal is probably the main one for me, could really do with some more viable striker options. Ings to somewhere would be useful for those of us looking for a decent cheapie (unfortunately Niasse now seems to be a no go), and maybe Nasri to West Ham.

Ha it's beyond parody now. I think the news outlets know it too and are doing it for clickbait, but seriously they need to look at who they already have there for sure.
Hazard also said last night he doesn't think they need a big target man because they aren't set up that way: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42769975

And I'd seriously love someone to shed light on Conte and Batshuayi. I just don't get that dynamic! Must be some serious personality clash going on there because you have a multimil striker waiting and instead you're looking at donkey-in-chief AC

Exactly ! My only thought is that they need english players to adhere to the homegrown rule but then they were linked to Dzeko so not sure how accurate that is.

Aye, I dont understand the dynamic from what ive seen of Batshuayi hes much beeter than AC and Barnes.

As you say it may well just be the press trying to sell papers and get clicks

I saw a few posts about that - not sure how that works, I think some people's Football Manager knowledge being applied to the situation to try to make sense of it!

Exactly on Bats - seems a decent fella as well so I just dk what's going on there with him and Conte. Maybe a situation where the manager just doesn't fancy a player for whatever reason but he hasn't had any real chances/trust from Conte and he was less than wholehearted in his comments about him the other day.

I may still opt for Maguire, but Chilwell seems like a good option for 'a way into' Leicesters defence. Which would then allow me to have VVD/ Monreal/ Stones alongside him.

Gomez, if I wasn't on triple Pool attack I would have him.

VVD is probably the sensible option.

    Ryan Krul
    Alonso Ogbonna Naughton Kenny Rangel
    Salah Sterling Son Arnautovic Lingard
    Kane Aguero Quaner

Really happy with my team atm but the two biggest flaws are only having Salah when everyone also has Firmino and possibly Gomez, and the lack of United cover in defence.

I have 2 free transfers so I'm going to bring Mane in for Son, but the other transfer is going to be an issue. Ideally I'd like to bring in Choupo Moting but then I can only replace Naughton with a 5.0 defender (Shaw would have been perfect if he wasn't dropped).
If I bring Allen in for Lingard and Mane in for Son, I can upgrade Naughton to Smalling the gw after for easy games against Huddersfield and Newcastle. However I need to make this move before Lingard drops, but I also kind of need to wait for Wednesday's game to find out if United and Chelsea will be blanking or not.

Should I just wait until Wednesday's match regardless of anything that happens, and if Lingard drops before then should I just buy someone like Milivojevic or Sako, and stick to the plan with Mane in for Son and Smalling in for Naughton?

I'm sure lots of us guys feel down after that Kun hattie (non-owner here of course) so I had to do something to feel better. 🙂

Just counted the points from both Kun and Firmino for the last 7 GWs (lots of us made a decision between these two long ago) and I'm immediately feeling better. 48 points for Kun and 47 for Firmino without his game tonight. We have to take into account that 3+ millions Firmino gets us and it's all good. 😉 We usually only see those big hauls and that's what sticks with us. Should see a bigger picture and that's Firmino + 3M is better than Aguero on his own.

I would still feel better with Kun in my team this week of course but it's not all that bad as it seems. 😉 Hope it helps those with Firmino over Kun a little bit.

    Cheers all.

Hey mate! Another medium we connect on (assuming that's you on twitter too haha)

Agree with you completely - hindsight has 20:20 vision and I think a lot of people are irrationally upset with themselves for not having Kun in their squad.

Fact of the matter is that if Kun scored just 1 (the KdB cross -shot didn't touch his hair + Darlow had reached just an inch higher) we wouldn't be having this debate.

Prior to the Gameweek, many people had Kane Firmino as the lineup and to be honest you'd have been seen as bonkers if you'd said "I'm removing Firmino for Kun" after the performances of the former so far.

I think it's just a case of people wanting to chase points - and also the fact that a lot of Kun (c)ers piped up on social media on Saturday night which was hilarious to see - that's now causing this sudden rethink. Go back to last week and he was just not a priority for any of us - maybe we should now pay him more attention for sure, but I'm not at all convinced it's anything more than the availability heuristic of the big haul dictating perception right now!

I brought Kun in 3 GWs ago when Jesus got injured, but I still agree re Firmino +3m being better value.

If I was WCing right now I'd have Firmino not Kun, and if I had picked Firm weeks and weeks ago I'd be happy with all those points in the bag. For me it was a case of identifying a short term opportunity to have a fit Aguero with less rotation risk as possibly the most highly credentialed 'differential' of all time. The fixtures were calling my name so I went with it.

But then again I have Choupo-Moting in midfield, so the sacrifices are obvious. CPM could be Mahrez for example. Taking my Aguero points and running but wouldn't be too worried if I was a non-Aguero owner.

Yeah me neither - nice post. I saw a lot of anguished posts on here on Saturday and Twitter ablaze with happy Kun owners too.

I've had Firmino for ages and have gotten so many points for him - would've meant a -12 to get Kun in, too - so I'd never have done it. Can't blame oneself too much for those situations 😀

Exactly. I think a lot of people (all of us at some point I'd say) tend to react only to the points we score or miss, without tracing back to how we ended up with or without that player and where we spent the cash elsewhere in our team.

I can't be frustrated at not getting Mahrez even though I really thought about it a lot, because going CPM and Aguero is why I have Kun's 17 points now. There are always trade offs somewhere, and it makes me feel better if i look back a few weeks and remember where some of my picks scored great points so when they blank now I can't be too disappointed.

And funnily enough I'm now looking at when to get rid of Aguero as others seems to be desperately scrambling to get him in With possible blank GW28 coming up and Jesus returning and all the rotation risk with their crazy schedule, I think it was just a great little 4-5 GW period to go Kun. But I'll be getting rid soon. This game's all about predicting points not chasing them.

Think it was a good call - now we're at a point I think where you've missed the boat (though WBA could be a decent source of points nevertheless).
Chasing points is a huge liability for so many people, including myself - I think the majority of my hits this season have been totally unwarranted and I'm by far in the red zone when it comes to points losses due to hits. But that's part of the fun for me - trying to get in ahead of the curve or make beneficial swaps to my side. Worked a lot last season, not really done so this at all, but I accept that 😀

Hey mate. Yep that's me on twitter, too. 😉

Agreed. This game can be very cruel sometimes, but it's all a calculated risk I guess. We knew Kun could deliver big, but I wasn't prepared to reshuffle my team for -8 just to get him in. Would be very happy with Firmino assist or a goal today and the damage wouldn't be as big as it seemed on Saturday. We could all say Kun owners felt the same way a few GWs ago when Firmino scored 12,11,13 points and Kun got 1,16,2.

Props to those who got him in of course but it's only one battle, the was is not finished. 😉

Me neither mate - I could've gotten rid of Firmino as I said but I'm sure everyone would've thought me bonkers.
Happy with a Firmino delivery for sure here too - am on 47 and think anything from him will push me to a tiny green, which after not owning Kun nor Mahrez I am happy with.

Yep, Mahrez is the one I do regret, because I wanted to get him in for Eriksen the whole week. At the end decided to give Eriksen one more week (and we all know how that panned out), so that one hurts. At least I've got 2FTs now and lots of options. 🙂

Did Wilson for DCL for the right reasons, just didn't work out.
The one I do regret is Lingard in for Son 2 weeks ago. That was silly, I should've rolled FT - just got too caught up in the hype with Stoke home the game. At the time it looked a no brainer, though, so I'm not too self flagellatory about it

Agreed, but one could argue that Firmino was also Captained in one of his hauls. But Kun is Kun, he has a higher ceiling of course and can do more damage in the right GW.

I got Lingard for 6.2 and he has scored 2 and 3 points 🙁 At least selling him before the price drop would mean I would profit .1 with him so it won't have been a complete waste...Besides Man Utd has Spurs away next...

Willian is second place for transfers in so far this GW

No doubt he has potential for scoring plenty of points. He has BOU at home next. Besides I can only afford 7.7 so I am looking at him.

    My concerns with Willian are:

    A) We are never sure when he is going to play, are we? Did Conte said something? Why so many people getting him?

    B) His Points per Match aren't great. Only 3.9.

What do you think about this transfer? Who else would you consider up to 7.7? Or would you just keep Lingard and loose the profit?

I will probably downgrade Aguero after next GW due to Jesus getting fit so I will have more money and I could go for Mahrez or Pogba...

    Thanks

Same experience with Lingard. Removed Sonny, too.

Wouldn't do Willian for me. 1 pointer waiting to happen.

For me it's Shaqiri at 6.0 if you want someone nailed, on the uptick and with good fixtures (as Jonty described him, a straight-to-DVD version of Eden Hazard).

I'm looking at him, Choupers or Walcott (out of scope for you maybe but I have a lot of cash to burn!) for Lingard, on whom I'm willing to cut my losses
