Season Review

Team of the Season – Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Without a goal or assist to his name over 30 appearances in the 2010/11 campaign, Benoit Assou-Ekotto was far from prominent in Fantasy managers’ thinking as last term got underway. Hardly renowned for his attacking endeavours, the Tottenham left-back had mustered just one goal and four assists for the London outfit since joining from French club Lens in the 2006/07 season and resultantly started with a 5.0 price tag, 0.5 less than Spurs right-back Kyle Walker:

The Cameroon international begun every one of his side’s first 34 matches before being ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury sustained in the 1-0 defeat at QPR in Gameweek 35. In spite of this, Assou-Ekotto still managed to accrue enough points to finish amongst the top five defenders, just five points behind team mate Walker, with the highlight of his campaign coming in the first double Gameweek of the season. Assou-Ekotto was the stand-out performer of Gameweek 20, with a goal, assist, three bonus points and couple of clean sheets bringing his Fantasy owners a 24 point haul.

The Statistics

The left-back returned a total of 12 clean sheets over his 34 appearances, with seven of those at the Lane and five away from home. Both Assou-Ekotto’s double figure returns came in home matches, however, with an 18 point haul against Everton his highest of the campaign. Finishing on 135 points, he trailed Patrice Evra by 24 points, but proved better overall value, with the United man starting with a 7.0 price tag in comparison.

Working in tandem with Gareth Bale on the Tottenham left flank, Assou-Ekotto had the most eye-catching Fantasy campaign of his career by some distance – he grabbed two goals, five assists and nine bonus points, averaging 4 points per game, slightly better than Walker’s 3.8. A look at the members stats highlights he was more of a threat than the right-back throughout, producing more attempts on goal and creating more goal scoring opportunities than Walker on average.

As the Gameweeks progressed, plenty snapped up his services, with Assou-Ekotto reaching a season-high price of 6.3 before that afore-mentioned shoulder injury saw his price plummet and put paid to what was a highly successful season.

The Prospects

Given his finish amongst the top five defenders and increased attacking threat, it’s fair to say a price hike can be expected. Certainly, a jump of 1.0 to 6.0 looks the most likely, though with his Fantasy appeal at both ends of the pitch, a rise to 6.5 (Bacary Sagna’s starting price last term, for example) may not be beyond the realms of possibility when Fantasy Premier League (FPL) release the player lists in a couple of months’ time.

With Walker surely to be similarly priced, it may well leave Younes Kaboul as the best route into Redknapp’s backline, with Ledley King, Michael Dawson and William Gallas all too often blighted by injury. Fantasy managers could well overlook the Cameroon international, then, and while the likes of Swansea and Newcastle can expect a price increase, it’s likely that defensive options from both clubs will still cost less than Assou-Ekotto – given the pair produced more clean sheets than Tottenham last time out, the left-back looks likely to struggle to garner the same levels of attention.

It remains to be seen whether last term’s returns were a glimpse of what’s to come or just a one-off, though with Harry Redknapp somewhat reluctant to rotate his full-backs, Assou-Ekotto’s security of starts will at least be beneficial. While a mid-price valuation worked in his favour last time out, Fantasy managers willing to pay top dollar for an attacking defensive option next season may well look to more proven performers such as Thomas Vermaelen or Leighton Baines, despite the fact that both will come at a higher cost.

Preliminary defensive pool for next season:

      Kenny Federici
Kompany, Kaboul, Kelly, Brown, Fonte/Hooiveld, Monk, Wilson, Lichaj

Maybe the likes of Turner and Vidic can offer value (Davis may be the one in goal), but I think with Evans' emergence, Vidic could be occasionally spared next season. He may still be too expensive anyway.

I know people won't like this, but I have to get the defensive balance right as a matter of priority. If it takes me all summer then so be it...

I can see Wilson being a must have next season.
Ridgewell, McCauely, Foster, Warnock, Dunne, Collins, Given may also be decent options.

You're right, it will be all about value as usual. Looking for new players or players who underperformed or didn't play much last season.

Kompany may be too expensive next season. Baines may be priced a little lower than last season.

Not sure Ian Harte will be a regular in the premiership now, lost his legs ages ago.

Kompany is an interesting one. He's reliable in various ways and at some point you have to be disciplined and draw a line in bargain defenders to make way for some caviar ones.

It's all about price, but Baines will need to be around 6ish for me to buy him. Everton always start poorly and struggle for clean sheets.

Baines is a fascinating one. I agree, I think he'll be 7-7.5 which for me is too expensive, but I shall remain open minded.

This time last year he was to be the first name on my team sheet, but I now appreciate the value of FPL money!

Ditto. I'll only have him when they have a purple patch of fixtures (and the last 10 regardless). It hasn't come to fruition yet but with Pienaar probably back and Jelavic in the box his attacking returns will surely be boosted again next year.

Something putting me off Harte but if he's 4m and nailed on then he's going in. If he's priced at 4.5+ he could pose a problem as I like to go areodynamic in defence as much as possible.

I think Villa could offer a lot of value next season, but unsure about WBA.

I think Sunderland's defence will be worth a look next year. They tightened up after O'Neill's arrival and now he has a summer to work with them. Definitely on the watch list.

        It's a interesting call Corrigan

Hooiveld is definitely on my watchlist for next season, but I think only buying cheap options in defence poses a risk in itself. Paying a bit extra to won someone like Hart in net, or a defender like Ivanovic who should see more regular cs combined with a decent attacking threat may be worthwhile. Not sure we will be treated to so many cheap CS next season like we were with Newcastle, Swans and Evans this year. Also disagree on Vidic. He is the key component of United's defence. Defensive capitulations like the one we saw v Everton would not happen if Vidic was playing. He's like Kompany and Terry, if he's fit, he plays.

All about value and balance. Personally, I'm certainly going down the cheap GKs route. Even Hennessey proved to be a decent acquisition last season.

With regards to defenders, I'm looking at 3 rotating cheapies with 1 or 2 heavyweights of Kompany and Vidic capacity. Arsenal and Everton will need to become super tight if Baines and Vermaelen are to be worthwhile.

well Baines from about February time might be worth owning. But yeah, your point on keepers is a good one. If WHU come up, Green may be worth a look, Foster if it Brum or if he stays at Albion and they get a decent manager.

Belgium are potential future winners - they have some great talent emerging...Maybe a cheeky put for Euro 2016 or WC 2018.

Though I think could be too early right now.

Have to look at the draw before making that call - but can only see the usual suspects winning:-

          1: Holland
          2: Spain
          3: Italy
          4: France

Dark Horses - Russia, England could actually surprise but I doubt it with Woys Squad!

There are two settings: Let's say that Spain win their group as they will.

1: Germany wins their group, then they will not face Spain in the semis. Meaning Netherlands will most likely.

2: The other way around, with Germany being runner-up in their group.

But on that note, Pardews priority for the summer is a goal scoring CB, so keep an eye out for that one

I was already surprised that he was speaking to Tottenham, he is supposed to be leaving for a big club. I don't see why Barca & Real aren't all over him

well OT I suppose would be 2nd choice and that is in use, as is Hillsborough. I believe Villas Part is the biggest stadium not in use for the Olympics beyond the groups.

well it can't be at Old Trafford or the Etihad. I guess they wanted somewhere nearer Manchester rather than London, although that probably doesn't suit the utd fans 😉

          Afternoon all!

Not been around these parts for a couple of weeks but hope you all had a good end to the FPL season. See most are looking to get their summer fantasy fix from the upcoming Euro's, never played an international/UCL type fantasy game before but reckon I will give it a go this time.

I don’t know about you folks but I have to admit early attempts at constructing a team highlight how little I feel I actually know about european/international footballers, outside of the big names. It's kind of strange, I feel like an FPL novice all over again which is both excitingly different and somewhat disconcerting at the same time!

Guess the pre-tournament friendlies should give us some indication of possible starting line-ups, along with whatever statistical research I can absorb and potential pearls of wisdom from the good old FFScouters. Never ever posted a RMT before but might actually have to at some point in the next couple of weeks.

Hey Doosra, thanks for the link. Had spotted the team/stats section from the game site and have been swotting up a bit this afternoon. Has proved pretty useful thus far I think.

Probably common, hence my question... I also favour attack (usually) as I rather gain points during the game than lose them but just thinking of smth different, not many will score 6 pts (+ recovered balls)

I haven't seen anything of Remy - what's he like? Who would you compare him to?

kinda of a smallish, creative type with a good shot. maybe Carlito-light?

On youtube highlight viewing (always a terrible way to judge a player but it will have to do) he reminds me of Suarez a bit, pacey, tricksy and can head also.

Let me get this right with the McDs game:

You're best having someone from the first 4 games as captain, yes? If that person doesn't do well, you just change the captinacy to someone else in your starting XI for the next day's games and the original captain goes back to normal points? You then repeat this again in day 3 and 4 if you want?

Hence, it's best to have players on all 4 days?

And with the bench, you should play, for exmaple, a greek defender on the starting XI ahead of say, Jelavic or whoever and then if the Greeks don't do owt, you put Jealvic in, and if the Greek gets a sheet and a goal, you leave him in? Can you captain someone who is originally set up on your bench. Yes, presumably?

From the Rules section on Subs "Players who are substituted out will score 0 points, the captain bonus will be lost from your original captain if a new captain is selected."

              Sorry for any strawberry pissing.
