The Watchlist – Simon Mignolet

Given their form so far, it’s a little difficult to praise many of Sunderland’s Fantasy assets right now. Aside from Steven Fletcher’s run of five goals across Gameweek 2-5, the Black Cats have failed to flicker on our radars after an insipid batch of displays. A single win and seven goals scored over their first 10 fixtures leaves Martin O’Neill’s side hovering three points above the drop zone but, with four home matches in their next five, the schedule offers a chance to push up the table.

Simon Mignolet comes into our thinking, then, ahead of a crucial run of games for the Wearsiders. While this weekend’s trip to Fulham looks limited for returns, given the Cottagers flourishing form up front, the following four Gameweeks smile a little kinder on their prospects. Home clashes against West Brom and QPR should hold little fear for a resilient Sunderland side set up not to concede – while the Baggies picked up their first away win of the season last weekend, they have scored just five goals in five away games, while Mark Hughes’ outfit have failed to score in each of their last two road trips. Bearing in mind the Black Cats have conceded just four goals in four at the Stadium of Light, confidence in their defence may be set to take a turn for the better, with Mignolet producing at least three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in each of his home games so far.

O’Neill’s side then make their way to Carrow Road in Gameweek 15. While Norwich haven’t tasted defeat in their last four, the Canaries have struggled to find the net, with just two goals scored over that unbeaten run. Indeed, with five goals in five matches in front of their own fans, their home record will afford the Black Cats hope of a third away clean sheet, having kept out Arsenal and Stoke on their travels already.

Double Gameweek 16 then sees Chelsea and Reading make their way to the Stadium of Light. Granted, the clash against Roberto Di Mateo’s side looks good for only save points for Mignolet, but the Reading match has clear potential – Brian McDermott’s strugglers have scored three times in their last four away games.

Coming in at 5.0 FPL and 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, Mignolet offers a decent mid-priced option for those Fantasy managers currently looking for alternatives to the likes of Jussi Jaaskelainen and Asmir Begovic between the sticks. Having already accrued 39 points – just four less than Petr Cech, for example – he is second only to Fletcher’s 48 for Sunderland and has offered a consistency of starts matched only by John O’Shea amongst the Black Cats backline. If O’Neill is to engineer a climb up the table, these next few games looks be crucial and while Fletcher has earned the plaudits so far, Mignolet’s contribution will be equally key to his side’s fortunes.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Guthrie to Fellaini
    Ivanovich to Gorkss
    Jaask to Tremmel

    4 point hit. Worth it?

Would give me a mid and forwards of -

    Hazard - Mata - Cazorla - Fellaini - Michu

    Lambert - RVP - Berbs

Agree they are not ideal. I'm also looking at the DGW and that I have 3 Chelski, who miss a game GW18, so would remove Ivan, while Gorkss would give Reading coverage.

        Hmmmmm.

or Michu & Guthrie to Fellaini and a better cheapie that plays.

Nothing in bank for that, to get Fell need to get rid of Ivan for someone like Sagna to upgrade.

Problem is I have had Michu from GW1 and reluctant to get rid as I think he will score plenty.

        Cheers anyway 🙂

Afternoon all. Hate having to spend a transfer on my goalkeepers and wanted to wait until the January WC but now with Foster out at least for this week maybe more, I am left with Guzan.

Really undecided on whether to ship Foster for Mignolet/Schwarzer/Begovic as Guzan has decent fixtures in a couple of weeks, or get rid of Guzan but there aren't any decent options in the sub 4.5m bracket apart from maybe Jones.

So basically should I take the likely 1-2points this week from Guzan and wait for Foster or change up? any advice appreciated as I'm completely torn.

Also does anyone know when Reina is back?

It's a tough one. I think I would stick and use my transfer elswhere, because Foster should be back by the end of the month. Reading's fixtures this week and the next two are not horrible. But if you have no other move you are dying to make it's a good time to sort out your keepers. THe problem is that Foster to Migs is sideways except for the next two weeks. I guess my point is that you spend a transfer on a keeper and then three weeks from now you still have Fed, and not much better off than you would be had you just kept Foster. So the question is whether you think Migs will get you points you will lose if you play Fed for the next two weeks or so. It's no sure thing. I think I would look for a more impact move to make or save the transfer.

Thanks EJ - well put actually thanks for taking the time ,
fed might just give me similar points over next few prob a little less but i can live with that , I'm goona keep and save transfer for next week as tbh I'm monitoring Silva/Walcott - the likes of those transfers could be much more rewarding.

they scored 24 goals at home all of last season and so far have only scored 5 in 6. Suarez granted is on form but he has a goal involvement % over 70%. Can that continue?
