The Community Round Up

The shock news of Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott’s long term injury left Wildcard plans and midfield lineups in tatters. Fortunately the community was on hand to rally round and provide a wealth of “Hot Topics” offering advice on how best to cope with his loss. Elsewhere, we examine how the community gave Ole Gunnar Solskjær a good going over plus provide an extended Community Tournament round-up featuring some rarely covered competitions, including one featuring some of the community’s most grizzled members.

The Hottest Topics

First off, World Cup motivation was the subject of Elninorules comprehensive list of players as he questioned whether their enthusiasm for an air ticket to Brazil could translate into Fantasy Football potential? A timely topic given Adam Johnson’s flurry this weekend.

That proved a welcome distraction from Wildcard fever which continues to sweep across the community, dominating discussion. Lachyas was among the latest to pen a guide to the Winter refresh. His look at the template Wildcard team includes a step by step guide, which builds around the “essential” Luis Suarez and identifies the cheap fifth midfielder as a vital component. Elsewhere, Evs decided to focus on the midfield big guns, asking whether we can afford to “go large” in the engine room and build around the “elites” that are Mesut Ozil and Eden Hazard.

The focus wasn’t all on goals and assists. Wildcard defenders also came in for some analysis with The Sarjeant’s informed post targeting those backline custodians with the most favourable run of home matches from Gameweek 24 onwards.

Talking of defenders, Dogba put forward a rather controversial post that pondered the merits of cashing in on the meteoric rise of Everton’s right-back Seamus Coleman.

The ubers, the term used to describe Fantasy managers that favour a cheap rotating backline, were also out in force to encourage others to look at budget defensive options. This week RonH asked the simple but often overlooked question, does rotating cheap defenders actually work?

Bucking the trend, Sporting a Beergut spoke up for those Fantasy managers resenting all the Wildcard talk and looking to make the most minor of changes. His post on the use of a so-called diet-wildcard provides low-fat food for thought for those who may have been planning major surgery.

Theo Walcott’s injury has undoubtedly rocked the community over the past week, with thousands in the market for a replacement. Ozil, Hazard and Yaya Toure were, of course, amongst the safe options touted by Beavis. Although Phaze 1 stirred the pot by asking, whether Toure could possibly keep up his relentless form.

Meanwhile, Matskm focused on the Arsenal midfield in more detail, pushing folk to take advantage of their form and kind run of fixtures to come.

The week also saw Cardiff unveil their new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær with one of our Norwegian community members, Slikk, on hand to give a thorough insight of the Norwegian’s managerial credentials and style.

Finally, Spencer sparked an interesting debate about how our mini-league rivalries influence our transfer decisions. Bentekkers was also investigating mini-leagues and has been busy developing a Google Chrome extension to give managers more details about their FPL leagues. Full details and link here.

The Community Tournaments

We start with the “Long and Winding Road” (LAWR) competition and among the league leaders going into Gameweek 21 were Christina who tops the Le Corbusier – Villa Savoye league. Evs continued to lead the Cloud Nine league and Champ stood proudly at the summit of the LAWR league entitled “Voicemail Slide”. LAWR’s organisers Doosra and Ginkapo have also announced early details of their “FA Cup of Tea” tournament, involving all 128 players in their head-to-head leagues across seven rounds. The competition starts in Gameweek 25 and the draw will take place in Gameweek 23.

Evs also topped the FFS Old Farts Club, a league dedicated to the community’s “older and wiser” members, but our moderator was in second in Team Senegoal’s league, behind Beric, ahead of this weekend.

Elsewhere, DonTheSpecialOne was in the lead of the The Puffinboy Memorial Cup, the league for veteran posters and named after one of Fantasy Football Scout’s very first regulars.

Kings of Lyon’s “Who wants to be a millionaire?” League is another tournament currently in progress. Set up back in Gameweek 8, this was earmarked for all those Fantasy managers that, at the time, were placed outside of the top million Fantasy Premier League players. The aim is to see how many can breach the Top 10k mark by Gameweek 38. Ahead of Gameweek 21, 60 of the 65 entrants were safely within the top one million and six are in the top 100,000. Amy Dexter leads the league with an overall rank of around 30,000.

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league, 271 remained ahead of Gameweek 21 and he’s running three mid-season leagues to join, After Xmas, Millionaire Club and January Wildcard. Details here.

Meanwhile, at last I get to mention myself in this section, as ahead of Gameweek 21, I was in the lead in the FPL section of the Ironman league, a 12-strong league for those competing in the FPL, Metro and Sky Sports games. Gigging Order topped the Metro and Sky Sports components and remains in poll position for the title.

Finally, we’ve had a request from RonH to include the FFS Moderators and Contributors league standings. His interest is timely as, going into today’s games in Gameweek 21, Athletico Timbo had taken a shock lead over high-flying Evs with a bumper Saturday score of 60 points. Evs has since brought in 33 points today and trails Timbo by just a single point after our leader brought in another 17 points in Sunday’s games. Lower down, Granville was in 16th place, seven spots ahead of his ScoutCost co-host Mark. I daren’t say too much more on this – Mark will only edit it out.

I wonder if there's a way to find the most picked positions for WC teams - an average?

I'm wondering if I have any real differentials.

Yeah, I'm talking in WC teams in particular. There are that many ghost teams now many players stats are misleading...

Hmm, just NTI stats maybe for the past GW then, with an assumed amount of people who already owned them, could give you a decent idea.

Tried that, but it's still misleading. Need an average over a given set of GWs I guess. Will see what's what next week and do a comparison.

I've got a feeling only Gerrard will bring me any real joy.

    Morning All,

I seem pretty well set for this week's plum games, apart from Arsenal attack.

Could I get some opinions on the best way to get some Arsenal attacking cover into this line up please?

    Howard
    Koscielny - Bardsley - Chester
    Gerrard - Yaya - Hazard - Sterling
    Suarez - Negredo - Adebayor

    Daniels - Whittingham - Vidic - Burner

    1FT 0.7m in the bank.

    Cheers!

Ade -> Giroud (you need 0.1 more)
But Ade could rise in time for you to get profit, if you bought him for 7.7

That would be ideal, but likelihood is Giroud will rise before Ade does!

Might have to punt on Podolski if he look like starting.

Catching up on my highlights. Another example of the goal review system working and taking away one of those occasional annoyances. Can't believe it took so long. Bit out of it in Australia, has it been well received by the fans and media? Now they just have to get one for off sides and we are half way to having nothing left to complain about when we lose

This is probably unheard of on here and i'm probably gonna be exiled for even mentioning it.. but has anyone thought of making a team without aguero.. for a couple of weeks atleast
Just coming back from injury.. tot CHE
Barcelona game sandwiched between SUN STK. Suarez offering a captaincy option every week for the next 6 gameweeks with 4 home games and fulham and wba visiting.
    Alternatives in the form of
Sturridge, Lukaku, Adebayor, Giroud, Rooney, Negredo and big hitters in midfield and baines to spend money on.
Dont slate me.. i'm just asking if it is at all crazy to maybe ignore Aguero for some time in favor of other options especially as his points wont be doubled cause of suarez..

Brought this up last night to some pretty good responses. so thought i'd mention it again.

It's a valid strategy for sure. But his ceiling is so high for CAR, especially if he gets some minutes midweek against Blackburn.

I'm WCing this week and I'm pretty sure he'll be in my team, unless Pellegrini confirms he won't be starting.

Negredo and Giroud Cheaper then Aguero.

Giroud 96 points, Aguero 117 points

In midfield you could have higher scoring midfielder.

      Ozil Giroud
      Silva Aguero for example

Given that I have already used my WC, I probably wont get Aguero for now. I have Sua, Ade + Giroud, with Adebayor being the only one I have concern for!

Perfectly justified - especially as calf injuries appear to be prone to strains and recurrence (large muscle) - we could do with that Physio chap giving us the skinny.

I'm still putting him straight in to. 11.9 won't last for long and City are going to continue to bang them in.

It is a thought but it's just that I don't really like the other attacking options at the moment except from Sturridge. Lukaku will get points I'm sure but at the moment is off form, Adebayor - I don't really rate Spurs, Giroud I don't particularly rate, etc.

It's a good idea IMO but the damage he can do just by starting a couple of those games is too much to risk. Not to mention also the fact that he already had important CL games in October/November and he wasn't really rested in those either. He can be rested in FA Cup, the Capital One semi final, etc. There are opportunities to rest him so he will feature in almost all of City's games IMO and thus will score very well.

Also I think I'd prefer to captain Aguero rather than Suarez some GWs, e.g. 25 (Liv vs Ars (H) and City vs Nor (A)), 26, 30, 31, etc....

I've been thinking just that. For a couple of weeks. I might grab Sturridge as a stop-gap and bring him in a bit later. Negredo looks tempting in his own right against Cardiff and Suarez will be captain anyway.

Maybe i'm just not as eager as everyone else as i have owned Aguero VERY often last season and the one before that and he has burned me far too much. Now that he's just back from injury, got Barcelona in the UCL, got Dzeko and Negredo playing well together, Got jovetic coming back i sense frustration coming up tbh

Yup.. this season he's been a beast and i've owned him for most of his points. I just know i wont be captaining though as i prefer playing safe and most will be captaining Suarez for the next 8 weeks(those fixtures!!) .. so if i go for Sturridge over Aguero say i'll prob be missing out on just 20 odd points as they wont be doubled. i cant afford sturridge if i go with Suarez Aguero for eg

As a Gerrard owner his points potential hasn't changed imo.

His points come from set pieces and that won't be changing.

However I noticed his bps at half time were impressive given his pen was in the 2nd half.

I hope people do sell due to Rodgers comments as it makes Stevie a better differential for mw , but don't insult peoples intelligence by suggesting a deeper role affects a set piece King's points potential.

Yeah. If you look at BPS - even with injury lay offs, he makes best 4 MF's after Yaya Haz & Rmsey

    Thoughts on a defenc of
    Mannone
    Coleman Clyne Whittaker Hudson bardesly

Extremely cheap considering I got Coleman at 5.o
The home fixtures for the rotating teams are unbelievable, can't guarantee arsenal, city etc will keep up defensive returns

Anyone know why Nastasic missed out for City? Was it rotation only, or perhaps another injury?

Disappointment considering I transferred him in with my WC.

To WC or not to WC yet, that is the question. No keeper points is starting to annoy me, but not hurting too bad. Benched players are a sad sack. Wanted to wait another week or two if possible.

    Begovic | Jääskeläinen

    Williamson | Bardsley | Terry | Coleman | (Turner)

    Navas | Ozil | Hazard | (Brady | Jedinak)

    Suárez | Ade | Lukaku

    ---

Thinking about downgrading defense to cheap rotators (so basically getting rid of Terry), getting Silva into the midfield for Ozil and getting rid of Navas, and upgrading Ade to Aguero

Ok front three are currently Suarez, Lukaku and Adebayor.

    Pls comment.

    A. Aguero for Lukaku (no hit)

    or

    B. change Lukaku and Adeba for 2 of
    i. Sturidge
    ii. Negredo
    iii. Giroud

    Ty
