Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City ease past Liverpool 3-1. Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to score once again, with a Pablo Zabaleta own goal denying the hosts a second clean sheet of the season.

Jovetic at the Double
The City striker proved a deadly differential in last night’s encounter with Liverpool by bagging a brace in the 3-1 win. Sold by over 24,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers last week, Jovetic sat in less than 5% of Fantasy teams as the Reds rolled up to the Etihad but, handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko once again, he rediscovered the form that saw him net five times in pre-season and delivered a 13-point return for his owners.

Now down to 7.9 in FPL, Jovetic seems in the driving seat to retain a starting berth at home to Stoke next weekend and arguably has the platform to edge ahead of Dzeko in the pecking order. The latter was forced off with a leg problem midway through the second period, though Manuel Pellegrini was optimistic of his chances after the match:

“Edin had a kick that gave him some trouble with his leg but I don’t think it is anything important. We will see tomorrow but I think he will be okay.”

Quick-Fire Aguero Nets Again
Once again, the Argentine demonstrated that he needs little time to make an impact for City. Having netted just seven minutes into his substitute appearance at Newcastle last week, Aguero scored 23 seconds after climbing off the bench to breach the Liverpool backline and bring him onto Fantasy radars ahead of the home clash against Stoke. Granted, Manuel Pellegrini’s team sheets underline he’s clearly determined to protect Aguero as he returns to match sharpness, but if Dzeko fails to recover, the little Argentine could be let loose against the Potters.

Kolarov the fall-guy
Despite putting in a strong attacking display in the clean sheet at Newcastle, it was Aleks Kolarov who was sacrificed for Pablo Zabaleta’s return to the starting XI. Gael Clichy switched to his preferred left-back role, leaving Kolarov on the bench as an unused sub. With Bacary Sagna also now an option for Pellegrini, the full-back situation is looking complex and difficult to read. Secure investment in the City back four looks limited to Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany once again, then.

Reds Unconvincing in Etihad Loss
A late own goal by Pablo Zabaleta was all the Reds had to show for last night’s display. Coming off the back of a narrow home win over Southampton, there are signs that Liverpool may take some time to adjust to life without Luis Suarez. The late introduction of Rickie Lambert suggests the former Southampton man will be no more than Brendan Rodgers’ “Plan B” in the latter part of matches, though Raheem Sterling owners will be a little concerned that the youngster’s minutes were curtailed to allow Lambert pitch time.

In defence, Rodgers has concerns over full-backs Glen Johnson and Albert Moreno who picked up injuries. The former was forced out of the action due to a thigh problem, whilst the Spaniard picked up a sprained ankle on his debut. With a trip to Spurs up next, the Reds defence looks unlikely to chalk up their first shut-out of the season in light of last night’s display, though the schedule does improve significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

          Wasn't sure if he would start with Aguero coming back and he had played poor against newcastle. Didn't want him to come off the bench for 1 point...

    Fantasy Football Scout Community Champion needed.

    As you may have noticed we’ve revamped our Scout Picks. Mark, myself, Paul and a community champion picked by you each week are up against each other.

    We are now looking for Gameweek 3’s Scout Picks Community Champion to represent you and get one over on The Scouts.

    To put yourself forward simply add in your Gameweek 2 Scout Picks here. For everyone else please upvote the poster you would like to represent you based on their picks.

    We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of budget. We are sticking to a budget of 83.5m. There’s no captain in the picks either.

    I’ll leave this vote for 24 hours and come back at 10am tomorrow to find out who is the community’s choice.

    Once selected I’ll need you to email me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with your final scout picks by Thursday 5pm at the latest. There is time to alter based on injuries on Friday daytime – just keep me updated by email. If your champion fails to submit their final team by this time then an assistant from our team of moderators and contributors will step in.

    Gameweek 2’s community champion HVT did you proud with the second highest score of the week. His 56 was not enough to beat Paul’s 65 but was certainly enough to humiliate Mark’s tally of 47 and my total of 44.

        Thanks Jonty, most did well for me.
        4/4 cs at the back, Hazzard, Siggy and Costa also delivering, unfortunately my Eriksen pick over Adebayor didn't work out and Bony let me down but still well pleased and thoroughly enjoyed.
        Thanks again to each and all for your votes and support.

        May as well give an explanation behind my picks...

        Krul looks good for a CS against Palace. My 2 City defenders is a differential and I think it will pay off as they're both attacking and are my favourites for a CS this week. Caulker = massive goal threat + great fixture.

        Ramsey - Great form, great fixture. Hazard - Finding some form, will have a lot of space coming up against an attack-minded RB in Coleman. Mata - On set pieces and a goal threat, also up against a leaky Burnley defence. Siggy has a plum fixture and obviously is in good form.

        Jovetic - Nailed to start, amazing fixture, great form. Remy - Sunderland at home is the perfect opportunity for him to get off the mark. Rooney - I'll be very surprised if he blanks again.

      First attempt for me, here we go:

      Guzan

      Zabaleta - Ivanovic - Jaanmat

      Ramsey - Mata - Sigurdsson - Lamela

      Diego Costa - Aguero - Naismith

      Reasoning:
      Guzan - Villa have found a new solidity at the back and after selling Long, Hull are a little lackluster up front. Cheap option as well.

      DF- Zabaleta - Despite not getting any points he was very impressive against Liverpool, he seems even more attacking than last year, and a clean sheet looks likely against stoke.
      Ivan - Similar attacking threat to Zabaleta but more aerial power. Everton are a little week in the air at the back this season and I can see Chelsea capitalizing on set pieces like last year.
      Jaanmat - Have been sooo impressed with him. He looks a great deal, and in my opinion, better than debuchy. A fiery long shot and a home game against a Pulis-less Palace is enticing.

      MID - Ramsey - Right place, right time, newly promoted club = enough said.
      Mata - After many selling he scored and could hit a purple patch in form against Burnley. He is United's primary creator and with RVP back I expect a couple assists.
      Sigurdsson - seems to be a constant threat and at least delivers an assist for a rampant Swans side who face one of the relegation favourites, West Brom.
      Lamela - Finally living up to last season's hype. Yes, Liverpool are a tough match, but it gives Lamela the chance to prove himself at the top level.

      FWD - Diego Costa - Typical poacher, 2 goals in 2, scored from every shot on target.
      Aguero - Seems to score whenever he plays. Fitness back up he should start and Stoke seem enticing for the Argentine superstar.
      Naismith - top scoring striker, have picked him in each of my punts articles already. He scored against Chelsea last season and in my opinion is no longer a punt but fast becoming an essential option!

      Whatya think? Up vote?

      Wenger's team selection vs Everton indicates he will play Sanchez there. It is clearly in his thoughts and just because it didn't work in the first 45 mins vs Everton doesn't mean he wasn't going to try it again anyway. Giroud out just means it will be sooner rather than later.

    Krul (Begovic)
    Lovren - Wisdom - Caulker (F Luis - Davies)
    Mata - Hazard - Siggy - Sterling (Wanyama)
    Rooney - Jelavic - Costa

    This is my team. I have 2 FT and 0.0 i bank.
    I surely need to transfer Luis, but i need advice...

    Swap: Luis -> Clyne
    Sterling -> Ramsey/Fabregas?

    Should i also take -4 hit and put Naismith in for Jelavic and free up 0.9M in bank for comming weeks?

    Hi, this is my current team :

    Krul (De Gea)
    Vertongen, Clyne, Jones (Azpilcueta, Chester)
    Eriksen, Fabregas, Sigurdson, Mata(Henderson)
    Giroud, Diego Costa, Bojan

    2mil in the bank and 2FT.
    Thinking of going for Bojan -- > Naismith and Giroud -- > Jovetic

    Should I take a -4 hit and replace Eriksen for Ramsey or wait for another week ?

    Knee had a jerk last night. Wanted rid of Bojan and Young, and realised I had just enough cash for Jovetic + a 4.5 mid. Went for King from Leicester purely on the basis that I intend on benching him every week, and his ownership is rising.

    Gave Caulker a stay of execution, he has this weekends fixture to prove himself. But if he was to lose 0.2 rather than 0.1, that may force my hand. He should only drop 0.1m right?

      He won't drop 0.2 by Sat am. It seems v improbable, anyway.

    Anyone think Balotelli will be first choice penalty taker for Liverpool? He is one of the best penalty takers in the world so I'll be surprised if he doesn't become the No.1 penalty taker as he is just that good at them:

    I have missed the initial boat with Siggy - thought I was smarter than everyone and didn't listen...

    But with WBA and then che how much do we think he could rise between now and after the chelsea game?

    basically - should I take the conservative approach and wait it out or am I asking for trouble and just take a 4 pt hit now for

    Bego --> Elliot (with Krul)
    Marney --> Siggy
    Fletcher --> Wood
