Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Monday

Saido Berahino is amongst the goals once again as West Brom play out a 2-2 home draw with Man United. Stephane Sessegnon, Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind also find the net, whilst Angel Di Maria earns an assist as Radamel Falcao drops to the Red Devils’ bench.

Berahino Nets Again
The youngster continues to thrive as the central striker for West Brom and took his tally to six for the season with a second-half effort against United last night. Now up to 45 points after the first eight Gameweeks, the 5.6-priced Berahino is shaping up to be a decent short-term differential – having netted four times in the last three Gameweeks, he now entertains Palace and Newcastle in the next three, with a trip to porous Leicester sandwiched in between.

Brunt Under the Radar
Having recovered from a groin injury sustained on international duty, Chris Brunt continues to pick up the points for the Midlands outfit. Whilst Stephane Sessegnon’s superb opener grabbed the headlines, Brunt’s creativity is paying off time and again – his assist for Berahino’s goal was the third time in the last four Gameweeks he’s teed up a team-mate to fire home. At 5.4 and with a 0.2% ownership, Brunt could be worth considering for those on the lookout for a short-term midfield punt.

Wisdom in the Points
Unable to feature against parent club Liverpool last time around, the right-back ousted Cristian Gamboa from the starting line-up against United last night. In spite of Alan Irvine’s recent praise for the Costa Rican, it seems he remains behind Wisdom in the pecking order, and with an assist for Sessegnon’s opener, the 12%-owned youngster looks set to remain as one of the most popular cut-price defenders around.

Falcao Benched as United’s Away Toils Continue
With his side seeking a first away win of the season, Louis van Gaal’s team sheet raised a few eyebrows as Radamel Falcao dropped to the bench last night in order to accommodate Adnan Januzaj as United shifted to a 4-2-3-1. The Colombian had scored or assisted in the previous three but was afforded just 19 minutes by his manager last night. With unlikely scorers Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind rescuing a point for the Red Devils, Van Gaal may think twice over omitting Falcao as Chelsea roll up to Old Trafford this coming weekend. After the match, though, he admitted he may opt to keep the new system and also suggested Fellaini’s physical presence may be beneficial in the centre of the park as he continues to tinker with his preferred XI.

Di Maria Ticking Over
The Argentine moved to within a point of the FPL midfield summit after serving up an assist for Fellaini’s strike last night. Snapped up by over 203,000 Fantasy managers prior to the Hawthorns encounter, Di Maria has now played a part in seven of his side’s last 13 goals (three strikes and four assists), but with Chelsea, City and Arsenal in the next four, some owners may be looking at a way out in order to generate cash for the Sergio Aguero. Having limped off with a thigh problem late on, we’ll be anxiously awaiting updates on the 10.2-priced midfielder’s fitness ahead of the weekend deadline.

Expect one of Berahino/Sakho to continue their run.

Now, I'm getting neither because I'm pretty sure that I'll choose the wrong person.

I'd go with Berahino. Despite being a hammer, it is more likely that we will evenly distribute goals. Also Berahino is on Pens.

    Mannone, Heaton
    Baines, Bertrand, N.Taylor, Duff, Moore
    Hazard, ADM, Chadli, Sigurdsson, Boyd
    Welbeck, Falcao, Costa

I am having a shoddy start. Falcao gamble hasn't paid off at all. Going to lose him for Aguero.

Hazard to Tadic to fund it? (Considering ADM to Fabregas too because of fixtures)

I watched Berahino, whilst he is the lone striker, he got nobody to support him..Sessegnon is slow

Cant say the same for West Ham, better attacking team that keep pumping ball into the box for Sakho and Valencia to strike

Just look at West Ham after 8 games, scored more than WBA and and played Liverpool and Man Utd

West Ham will be in Top 7 this season imo

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Congratulations to Saniul who has won the vote to be this week’s Community Champion in the Scout Picks. With more than a 100 point gap to bridge he has a tough task on his hands – but let’s hope the fightback starts now.

Meanwhile we have some exciting news for those that are chosen to represent the community each week. We are pleased to announce that the champion with the highest gameweek score this season will win a £100 Amazon voucher. For double gameweeks the score for the week’s first 10 games only will be counted for the purposes of this special prize.

Currently HVT with 56 is in pole position. Can Saniul beat him?

Meanwhile we have made a few more changes. From next week the Community Champion vote will be launched as a separate community article not a hot topic. This will be published on Monday at 10 am. For future votes please direct all canvassing there rather than the main comment section. Also be mindful that spam posts may be counterproductive to your chances of success.

Finally this week saw one community member seek to disrupt the voting process. Any other attempts like this may be removed at our discretion. It is not fair on those community members who put in their time and effort to take part in this weekly contest, especially when £100 is at stake.

Congratulations again to Saniul – can you send me your final XI to jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk by 5pm on Thursday.

Because he posted a team that was differentials. Plus was his choice of Tadic really that poor? People voted for him because they wanted something different. Being different is something that carries a lot of favour in fantasy football with people not keen to follow the herd. He should be commended for the effort he put in.

This is completely different to deliberately disrupt the process with a deliberately poor team.

He got voted in for writing a poem, people didn't vote for his team.
He deliberately picked a whole team with low ownership, clearly it was never going to do well. One or two 'differentials' can pay off, a whole team is ridiculous.
He scored 39 points(?) despite having Tadic who scored 23 on his own?
          That's 16 points from 10 players!

The Scout Picks teams for double game-weeks ought to take all matches from those game-week into account, not just the first ten.

Because of rearranged matches, some clubs might have two matches in the first ten, and others none.

And what about game-weeks in which there are fewer than ten matches because of postponements, thus putting our champions for those game-weeks at a disadvantage?

No, the only fair method is to award the prize to the champion who defeats the Scouts by the greatest margin. But should that margin be over the best Scout team, or over the average score of the three Scout teams?

      Good changes.

In fairness, it was not "one community member" who sought to "disrupt the voting process." He could not alone do that. Well over 70 voted for his team showing that there is a vocal minority who did not enjoy some aspects of the process, which is now changed, in part, I suspect, because of this vocal minority, not because of the one.

We have been looking at doing the vote as a community article for some time as well as offering a prize. Its a shame though that the process was disrupted this week especially for those like Saniul, Ludo and Nate, who got a lot of votes and put forward good teams.

Nate and his posse lobbying for votes was a major factor in creating the Muppet revolt.

It seemed so at the time, but it did lead to the format change with a separate article and highlighted the Nate posse spamming.

He and others wanted to represent the community with a team. he had supporters who canvassed for votes and we had a word with them about spam posting.

We do not advocate spam posting at all but at the same time we want people to enjoy the competition and elect the poster whose team they want to represent them.

One of the reasons we are putting the vote it in a separate article is that any canvassing can take place there. That makes it much fairer on people. Spam posting is still not allowed but the occasional post asking for a vote is fine.

Mate, he was answering every post just so he could ask for an upvote after some cursory reply to the original post, from what I saw (on the few pages I bothered looking at anyway) he was the one canvassing the loudest.

          This, I understand.

It is also a shame that people like Frank Black (who's thread was hijacked by the other issue) don't get a fair chance at the voting process despite putting in great efforts regularly.

Voters don't seem to be all that engaged on voting based on merit alone; there is always an element of popularity in the voting.

+1 there's a big issue on FFS this season with vocal minorities.

Deciding what rules are and aren't broken (over and over and over)
What players are and aren't essential (and which ones suck)
Messing with the scout picks votes
Complaining about the scout pick teams suck

The last two get me the most! 😆

Congrats Saniul. Honestly. It looks like a good team and you deserved to be in the running. But let's have a look. It was one of the first up and I think the first that Jonty replied to saying it was good. His comments lead to people looking and that post alone and up voting. Then later in the day posters just look at the ones that have the most upvotes and pick out of those. I'm sure Jonty will come back and say that was because they were the best but again it shows how quickly the masses can be swayed and the glaringly obvious flaws in the set up and running

Guys, it seems fairer to make the prize winner the best performer against the scouts (i.e. highest winning margin) instead of just highest points total.

This would balance out high and low scoring weeks.

Where did all Muppet's late votes come from? Were they supposed to be some kind of protest? Makes the whole voting process a complete shambles. And how is the Amazon voucher supposed to get us to vote sensibly?

@ocprodigy's Scout Picks Challenge seems to work rather better. Perhaps it might be possible to combine the two ideas:
We could nominate our teams with budget of 83.5m as at present, but instead of up-voting them they could all be placed in a spread-sheet (or perhaps we could nominate our teams by putting them in the spread-sheet ourselves).
The manager of the highest scoring team would then become our community champion for the following game-week, and if the voucher for our highest scoring champion of the season is still on offer then that will be an incentive for him or her to select a sensible team.

We've had this put forward before and will look into it.. The main stumbling block is that puts a lot of pressure and time demands on Ofcprodigy or whoever runs it. All ideas welcome though.

Will do at some point. Keen to steer clear of anything that is too complicated though. Ofc does great work but it would be unfair to expect him to coordinate a large contest like this. I and others here certainly don't have time either. Also I'm not sure someone one week getting a good score necessarily means they will get a good score the following week. Rank could be a good indicator of whether a champion is good - but that's not really in the spirit of this - which is this everyone who wants to can have a shot at it. Its certainly an issue that will continue to be keenly debated.

If spread-sheets are a problem, then perhaps the submitters could calculate their scores themselves and reply to their original submissions with these scores. Then all you have to do is check that the biggest claimed scores are correct and that they had been submitted before the deadline. (It is to be hoped that you are not swamped by mischievous invalid claims).

Alternatively, how about replacing our Community Champion with a Community Dream Team? We would each submit our teams of 11 players within the budget of 83.5m as at present. These would not be up-voted, but after the deadline someone would add up the number of times each player is nominated in a team. The 11 players who have obtained the maximum number of nominations between them, subject to the conditions that they are in a valid formation and have a combined cost of not more than 83.5m and have not been ruled out by the managerial press conferences on Friday, would then constitute the Community's Dream Team.

I don't completely understand why people are getting so annoyed about this. However, I've got two suggestions:

      1) Could you vary the time you publish the article each week, i.e. in afternoons and evenings too? Some of us go to work without access to FFS during the day. By the time I log on some time after 7pm, the selection seems pretty much settled. Much like this comment, which has missed the boat by several hours late!

      2) Perhaps people putting themselves forward might want to note how well the team they suggested last week did? If someone said "last week I had Baines, Tadic, Pelle and Aguero and my team scored 115pts last week" I'd have more confidence in voting for them.

Why didn't you submit that team first time?

It does seem to prove though that many voters do indeed make their choice for reasons that have little to do with the team submitted, so I suppose you have made your point.

Thats not true. People vote how they wish. Some vote for the best team, some vote for their fav poster, sometimes its a combination of both. There are even people who vote for themes such as the differential theme from the last week, most people haven't even heard of that poster before. The current system is a democracy, its up to the people to decide and everyone has a different selection criteria.

    Falling stars update GW8

You know the drill…Falling stars is a fictitious squad/team made up of players who have all fallen in value from GW1 and have a combined value within the original 100 mill budget…The purpose is to demonstrate how we can beat the knee jerk and the GW avg without resorting to the green side of TotalFpl and chasing pts and value.

Hard to compete this week with so many FFS top picks making hay…nonetheless…

    Szczesny (1pt)
    Jagielka (14pts) Rafael (1pt) Bellerin (1pt)
    Hazard (3pts) Eriksen (9pts) Mane (6pts) Sanchez (13pts) Obertan (11pts)
    Cisse © (10pts) Falcao (1pt)

    (Elliott Sturridge Onuoha Bruce)

    70pts…(GW avg 49pts)

Sturridge failed to show giving weight to the argument never to pick a returning player until they play 90 mins (Walcott !)…and Falcao fell into the equally dangerous jet lag trap for returning far flung international players.

Despite lagging behind some of the massive sores on the site I’d be happy to beat the avg by 21 pts every week…no problem…!!..I’ll look forward to giving it another good hiding from the red side of TotalFpl in GW9…

Glad my patience with Tadic paid off - those underlying stats had been bubbling away for weeks, I was worried he was turning into another Modric ('assisting the assister') but evidently has the ability to convert. Let's hope he keeps it up!

      A. Terry -> Bertrand, save FT

      B. Bruce -> Wisdom, save FT

      C. Terry -> Bertrand & Bruce -> Rose

      D. Other? 0.2 itb

      Terry Baines Hutton Duff Bruce

Bit surprised you didn't mention in the article that West Broms manager said in the post-match interview that he didn't feel it would be right to make Gamboa play with jetlag against Manchester United, and that he would get more games eventually. He also said that Wisdom was giving him a good fight for the starting spot though, but worth noting Wisdom might not be nailed on

We've always known Gamboa was a threat but the only time Wisdom hasn't started was when he was ineligible. Looks safe for now imo

He's definitely a worry long-term though. It will only take 1 or 2 bad games for him to lose his spot. We may even see rotation 🙁

Lost on the previous post, so reposting:

        Krul,
        Ivanovic, Clyne, Baines,
        Sigurdsson, Fabregas, Sterling, Di Maria,
        Costa, Welbeck, Pelle.

Subs: Mannone, Boyd, Wisdom, N Taylor.

1 FT, £0.2m in the bank.

How do I get Aguero in this team?

        A) ADM -> Davis, Welbeck -> Aguero, 4 pt. hit

        B) Ivanovic -> Chambers, Costa -> Aguero, 4 pt. hit

        C) Ivanovic -> Duff, ADM -> Tadic, Welbeck -> Aguero, 8 pt. hit

        D) Ivanovic -> Wilson, Sterling -> Chadli, Welbeck -> Aguero, 8 pt. hit

        Thoughts? Cheers.

            Or I can also do:

            E) Welbeck -> Berahino, Costa -> Aguero

            ???

Obviously wait til after the mid week games... But I'd choose B of those options

I have a similar conundrum. I'm almost hoping the DI Maria injury is serious - fixtures look bad, and a downgrade could fund welbeck - aguero.

You're prepared to do a lot to get in Agüero, that is not guaranteed to score in the next game. 8pt hits are never smart, imagine Welbeck scoring a double against Sunderland and Ivanović getting one against United, with WHU parking the bus and Agüero doing nothing.

At a loss for what to do this week

              Heaton (Speroni)
              Rose Lovren Bertrand (Chambers Moore)
              ADM Cesc Sterling Siggy Dorrans
              Costa Aguero(c) (Naismith)

              2FT. 0ITB

              Start:
              Heaton or Speroni?
              Lovren or Chambers?
              Dorrans or Naismith?

On top of these, any obvious transfer stands out? Can't see anything to do

Possibly, but then it seems pointless if I have Chambers available to play.

Ideally I'd pick those 3, but then I face the problem of Speroni v Dorrans

Never seen it as a problem. But not sure on that, don't want to be lumbered with Forster from gw13.

I was considering a crazy Costa -> Benteke. Or a sensible Lovren -> cheapie, play Chambers and build up some cash

I have Krul & looking to get rid. I've looked at all the keepers & can't decide.

              Krul, Elliott
              Baines, Ivanovic, Clyne, Hutton, Moore
              ADM, Sterling, Tadic, Siggy, Boyd
              Aguero, Pelle, Welbeck

I've come down to Lloris, Guzan & Fabianski as the best options. Are there any other options I've missed.

Anyone else thinking of doing Costa to welbeck this week then reverse it the week after? Can't be doing with the inevitable uncertainty that will surround Costa this weekend.

Jose doesn't even know. Why are there a lot of people on here who do?

Because Jose is full of sh1te. If he isnt playing on Sunday then I will transfer him out, but I bet he is fit enough to play.

Where are people finding the room for Berahino or Sakho when we already have Aguero, Costa, Pelle and Welbeck?

Well clearly many don't have 3 of those 4. I'd find it hard to have them without sacrificing a big hitter in midfield

Better options than Welbeck and Aguero IMO.

Who is your top forward, midfield and defender to MUST have for the next 2?

Other than Messi, Ronaldo and ivanovich fabregas.

I want to take out robben, Ramos, and sterling.

              Thanks

I was looking in that direction too but it doesn't look wholly wise, in this light. Shame really.

Roscola? Your table is not working as it should:

I think I found the discrepancy.

Looks like your table is set to the last six Gameweeks, whereas mine is based on the last four. The numbers line up if you look at those different ranges.
