Scout Scribbles – City Held as Blues March On

Eden Hazard is instrumental in helping Chelsea put six past Maribor. Sergio Aguero grabs a goal and assist as Man City are pegged back by CSKA in Moscow, Hull pair Michael Dawson and Nikica Jelavic are out for up to six weeks, while Newcastle’s Siem de Jong may not return to action until the New Year.

Hazard Shines As Slovenians Are Hit for Six

Chelsea made it six wins on the spin by routing Slovenian champions Maribor at the Bridge. First-half strikes from Loic Remy, Didier Drogba and John Terry set the Blues on their way before they killed the match with three further goals after the break, as Eden Hazard went about dismantling their opponents. The Belgian capped another hugely influential performance by first forcing an own goal before converting Chelsea’s second penalty and then scoring a superb sixth in the dying minutes.

Jose Mourinho’s line-up saw Petr Cech restored in goal, while his defence saw two changes, with Kurt Zouma and Filipe Luis in for Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Loic Remy’s first-half goal came at a cost with the striker forced off on 30 minutes having tweaked his groin, leading to the introduction of Didier Drogba. Jose Mourinho confirmed the injury post-match, whilst suggesting that Drogba will have a part to play at Old Trafford on Sunday with both Remy and Costa now injury doubts.

“Loic Remy has a problem in his groin, I don’t know. Normally a muscular problem is a muscular problem so a couple of weeks. I was not expecting Didier to play for 75 minutes but he had to come on….Now he has to improve his condition, we know the player he is and we know he can still give us a lot.”

The Scout Says: Another sparkling Hazard display has to resonate with the Fantasy Football community. Overshadowed by the consistent output of Cesc Fabregas to this point, the Belgian has offered plenty of evidence in recent matches to suggest that he is now capable of delivering and surpassing his Spanish team-mate. With Mourinho once again stating that Diego Costa will likely be ruled out of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, Hazard has emerged as a potential replacement as Chelsea attacking cover for those willing to sell on the nine-goal striker in advance of Saturday’s deadline. Hazard has dropped to 9.9 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) having suffered a loss in ownership every week up until Gameweek 8. He’s currently owned by 14% of FPL managers, while Fabregas is found in over 52% of squads – last night, he could have claimed a hat-trick but offered the first Chelsea penalty to Didier Drogba. The Ivorian converted to notch ahead of Sunday’s Old Trafford trip which could now see him lead the line; Drogba is available for 6.2 and may tempt some as a short-term differential, should we get confirmed news on Remy and Costa’s prognosis.

City Face Exit After Moscow Stalemate

Manuel Pellegrini’s bid for Champions League glory looks to have deviated off course with City letting a two-goal lead slip in the behind-closed-doors clash in Moscow.

City made five changes to the side that blitzed Spurs on Saturday – Pablo Zabaleta, Eliaquim Mangala and Kolarov came into the defence, while Yaya Toure returned to the engine room and Edin Dzeko partnered Aguero in attack.

It had all started so brightly for City who took a first-half advantage through goals from Sergio Aguero and James Milner. However, two strikes in the second period, including an 88th-minute penalty conceded by Aleks Kolarov, saw City drop further points in their quest to qualify form Group E.

City now need results over their final three group matches, starting with the home clash with CSKA on November 5, three days after the Manchester derby. The next tie on November 25 – the home fixture with Bayern – looks vital and daunting after the German side’s 7-1 win over Roma.

The Scout Says: Sergio Aguero’s goal and assist in Moscow provided further evidence of his confidence and form but that will provide little compensation for another bitterly disappointing result in Europe. Once again it was Pellegrini’s defence that let him down – City have now kept just two clean sheets in their last 11 outings. Fantasy managers are unlikely to change their attitude on City’s rearguard, then, with Aguero continuing to be the leading attraction on show within their ranks – the Argentine has now completed three consecutive 90-minute matches, offering reassurance on his current level of fitness. Elsewhere, Milner’s goal provided some reward for a series of performances which have seen him develop as an unlikely attacking threat, while Dzeko’s assist served a reminder that he can offer a “plan B” for Pellegrini, should he decide to revert from the recent decision to field Aguero as the lone striker.

Tigers Suffer Double Blow

Hull City have confirmed that both Nikica Jelavic and Michael Dawson face prolonged spells on the sidelines following injuries sustained in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. Jelavic dropped from the teamsheet having tweaked his knee in the warm-up for the Emirates clash – scans reveal he’s torn his medial meniscus and he’s now booked in for surgery on Wednesday. Dawson has sustained a ruptured lateral ankle ligament, having been forced off in Saturday’s clash and, like Jelavic, he’ll face four to six weeks on the sidelines. Steve Harper’s torn bicep, which saw him withdrawn in the first half at Arsenal, will be assessed again later this week.

The Scout Says: These setbacks will come as bitter blows for Steve Bruce ahead of a testing run of fixtures, although the Tigers boss can at least console himself with the fact that he has an “Abel” replacement up front in the form of the Uruguayan, Hernandez. He was initially dropped to the bench for Saturday’s Emirates trip but he would now seem assured of a starting role over the next month. Robbed of the four-goal Jelavic, Bruce could now retain the 3-5-1-1 approach which saw Hatem Ben Arfa earn his first league start at Arsenal. He and Gaston Ramirez may now earn further starts in support of Hernandez, with Tom Ince, Sone Aluko and Robbie Brady offering other options. At the back, Dawson’s absence could prove a bigger issue. Having recently restored his three-centre-back system, Bruce could now turn to his son Alex to slot into his defence. A popular pre-season pick, Bruce has since dropped to just 3.9 and would represent a rock-bottom-priced short-term option, although Hull’s forthcoming run of fixtures look tough (liv SOT bur TOT mun).

Magpies Denied De Jong Tonic

Newcastle will be without Dutch playmaker, Siem de Jong, for another two months after he took to Facebook to offer the latest on his knee injury…

“Just saw the surgeon in London and all looks good. Still a couple of months to go but I’m sure I will get back stronger”

De Jong has played in the league just twice for Newcastle in a bitterly frustrating start to his stint on Tyneside. He had impressed for the Magpies upon his arrival in the summer and was tipped to be deployed in the “number 10” role, having scored 47 times and provided 27 assists in 118 league games over his last four seasons for Ajax in the Eredivisie.

The Scout Says: While Alan Pardew seems to have established a foothold at St James Park, the news from De Jong’s camp will be a major disappointment, given the promise shown by the Dutchman in pre-season. He looked every inch a Fantasy prospect and was keenly priced at 7.0 in the FPL. It now seems likely to be the New Year before we get to assess his potential as a differential, though having suffered a string of injuries in his final season in Holland, it’s clear that De Jong is a player that is prone to setbacks and spells on the sidelines.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

As someone who's done a -4 (Costa&Terry out for Kun&Dawson), I don't understand the fears of not being able to get Costa back in if I need to.

He'll have dropped another .1 and so I can do a -4 to get him back in, play a WC or opt for Hazard instead.

Right, I'm at a fairly pivotal point in my season. I'm seriously considering a wc. My current team is

    Krul, Myhill
Ferdinand, Bertrand, Naylor, O Shea, Chester,
    Siggy, ADM, Cesc, Sterling, Marney
    Costa, Kun, Welbz

    0 ft, 0 itb,

Obviously, my main concern is the defence and the fact that I have no decent cover for an injured Costa. Would you wc, and if not, would you take a hit to maybe swap rio out for a decent defender to cover Costa?

    Slightly long post alert.

Bit of a talk last week about losing DiMaria now that his fixtures stiffen significantly. I wasn't convinced then. But now the more I think about it the more it looks worth a risk. Now DiMaria, as he's always been, was again heavily involved against West Brom. But some of the football we played seemed really naive. Adm, as soon as he had the ball, looked to whip in a cross or have a shot from outside the box. It worked once against Brom, that too it required a slightly contentious advantage for Fellaini and a very very good finish. Personally I dont think we and in particular Adm will have much joy playing this way agianst the Cities and Chelseas of this world. I am looking at

    Adm + Bruce -> Chadli + Baines

There's a real chance that Chadli + Baines outscore Adm + my 3rd defender (Chambers/Wisdom) for the next 4-5

Feels a bit risky having just broke into the top 10k this week, you'd normally like to keep it steady. But then there's a fine line between being steady and stagnating altogether. I think this is a nice chance to be proactive and take a risk here, assuming most of Adm's 40% ownership will hold fire.

    Your thoughts on it gents.

I think it comes down to whether you think his replacement will score 8 more points than Di Maria during the short period of time you don't want him, plus whether you can actually afford to buy him back again. FWIW I shall be keeping.

        • 12 Years

Look the difference between having Aguero over Baines is that you get to double Kun's score each week as he is almost always captain. You wouldn't captain a defender consistently. Everton WILL concede a fair amount so Baines had better be performing offensively.... He is still a good choice but not for me 🙂

Three double figure hauls in five weeks. Aguero has only just managed his first of the season.

I've been a Baines-skeptic for some time on account of Everton's abysmal defending but at some point you have to look at the evidence and accept that he doesn't seem to need clean sheets to score very, very well.

Get rid if you don't think he'll play, don't have Kun, aren't entirely worried about loosing 0.3 or have any concerns about getting hm back. Keep him if you do, don't want to loose 0.3 and preferably have Kun.

That's just the thing... If you've owned Costa from the outset you can watch his price fall £.3mil & effectively only lose £.1mil on his selling price.

        Not too bad, right?

Wish I'd shipped him last week but thought it was just Mourinho playing mind games again. Now stuck with him for this week at least. Hoping he'll be fit for QPR but not optimistic at all. Why would Mourinho risk him in that match with Liverpool the week after?

Lol I just posted about this below.

I think better to stick unless bench looks weak. I do think he's a season keeper, unless he starts getting rested a ton.

      1. Doolittle
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

But a season keeper doesn't mean you have to keep them literally every game; does it make sense to have an expensive injured player when you could just get him back in when he's fit?

Too many people could be 'season keepers' (Aguero, ADM, Fabregas, Sterling, Tadic, Pelle), but in reality none of them have to be.

You're absolutely right, but his rise in price does make it trickier to get back in. Most people (myself included) would have got him at 10.5. And he needs a ton of selling to go down that 0.3 to make us break even in TV.

If you have Pelle and Aguero already: Don't sell Costa
If you have a good fifth mid: Don't sell Costa
If you don't have Aguero: Sell Costa buy Aguero
If you don't have Pelle and need funding for Baines or similar "essential" players: Consider to sell Costa and buy Pelle to free up funds..

Also, wait with the decision untill pictures from Chelseas training on thursday and friday

Ditched him for Aguero last night, if he's back for QPR I will either downgrade someone and get him in for Welbeck, or maybe get Hazard in and double up with Fabregas. A lot can change before then though, and I could not get Aguero in without ditching Costa this week.

it's a tricky situation, because if you do a swap to a cheaper player and then use the extra cash to upgrade to Baines, Aguero or to a premium mid... then you dont have the cash to get Costa back...

I was thinking to do Costa to Pelle (I also have Kun and Welbz) and then upgrade Chadli/Siggy to Haz for GW10... but Costa is still too hard to ignore... also, his ownership wont go down to 15% right away. In other words, if you sell, you may still face 40%+ teams with him in GW10

The dealbreaker for me was that I need Aguero. Sure, City might struggle against WH this week, but he's going up and I need him my team. Also, didn't want to shift either Pelle or Welbeck.

        Had to be Costa.

      I'm sticking.

Got Aguero and Welbeck already, Boyd is 5th midfielder with a home fixture coming up and no FTs left anyway.

Will see next week, but I doubt I'll be getting rid. Fixtures in short term aren't great but they pick up again after Liverpool away.

I sold him for Aguero on Saturday morning - about the first sensible decision I've made since GW2. Now I face the dilemma of when to bring him back (if at all).

In my more mischievous moments I allow my mind to drift to a place where Costa starts against Man Utd and picks up his first red card in English football. Possibly in a situation with echoes of the Rocky freeze-frame ending whereby he and Fellaini managing to elbow each other simultaneously.

Personally think this is a mind game from Mou. If he is okay enough to train since Monday morning last week, he is fit enough.

The fixtures against Palace and Maribor is a sure win game, with or without Costa. So he can afford to 'rest' him.

He will be back against United.

My agony is I'm leading my work league manager of the month and could do with the extra points a form striker has to offer. Could transfer to Pelle and still have enough to bring Costa back in.

Anyone else think a general poll every day / few days would be a great addition to the site?

As an example, there are tons of posts of "Should I sell Costa?" or "Is Costa actually fit or not?"

A single poll on the front page would be a pretty good way to capture all this, methinks.

Does anyone ever factor how exciting a player is to watch when buying them?

In that watching Rooney in a game when owning him is boring, even though he can return regular points they don't seem to come from anything exciting and he doesn't seem to have chances of points other than the ones he gets.
Where as someone like ADM is great to own and watch in that he is heavily involved in good attacks but can do anything from hit the home dugout to beat three men and curl it in the onion bag.
