Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 9 – Monday

Charlie Austin grabs both goals and Eduardo Vargas bags an assist as QPR see off Villa 2-0 at Loftus Road. Paul Lambert’s side fail to score for the fifth successive league match as popular budget option Alan Hutton misses out with an ankle complaint.

Austin at the Double
The R’s frontman was partnered by Bobby Zamora and scored twice as Harry Redknapp’s side climbed off the bottom with a vital home win over Villa. Owned by just 0.3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers heading into last night’s encounter, Austin’s brace underlined how increasingly influential he’s becoming in recent matches – that’s three goals and an assist in his last four, compared to a single strike in the first five Gameweeks. With back-to-back showdowns against Chelsea and City in the next two, it’s fair to say few will be looking at the R’s right now, but with Newcastle, Leicester, Swansea and Burnley from Gameweek 12 onwards, the 5.7-priced Austin may yet persuade some he could be worthy of the outlay.

Vargas in the Points Once More
Having emerged from the bench to notch twice against Liverpool, the Chilean was handed a starting role on the right last night before moving up top in light of Zamora’s withdrawal. After teeing up Austin for the second, Vargas took his tally to two goals and a pair of assists in his last three appearances, but at 6.4, few will be willing to consider him over Austin, given that the latter also has spot-kick duties to bolster his appeal.

Ferdinand Benched Again
The centre-half was a sub against Liverpool last time around after sustaining a minor groin problem prior to the match. Despite his availability for last night’s encounter, Redknapp continued with Richard Dunne alongside Steven Caulker and was rewarded with a second clean sheet of the season, suggesting Ferdinand’s pitch time is in real danger, with his 4% of FPL owners looking for a way out.

Another Blank for Villa
The signs look ominous for the Midlands outfit after they failed to score for the fifth successive Gameweek last night. To some extent, it was understandable that Paul Lambert’s side had drawn blanks against Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Everton but hopes were high of a turnaround at Loftus Road, given that their hosts had conceded at least twice in six of the previous seven. Christian Benteke and co. once again failed to impress, and with Spurs, West Ham and Southampton in the next three, Fantasy faith in Villa’s main men is unlikely to pick up anytime soon.

Hutton Worry for Lambert
An ever-present over the first eight Gameweeks for Villa, the right-back was sidelined due to an ankle problem last night. Hutton is the most popular cut-price defender in the FPL game – now up to 4.2, he currently sits in over 13% of sides after serving up three clean sheets in the first four. Having conceded 13 goals and earned his owners four points in the subsequent five, a possible spell on the sidelines could be the ideal opportunity to part company with the Scot as Villa’s toils continue.

    Foster
    Clyne - Ivanovic - Baines
Fabregas - Tadic - Di Maria - Siggy
    Berahino - Costa - Aguero

no FT or money ITB. Is it worth taking a hit to bring in Sanchez for ADM or Chadli for Siggy...?

1 FT, 2.3 itb. Any opinions massively appreciated.

You could consider dropping Siggy for someone in the same price range (Mane or Downing for example) or just hold and use the two transfers to do: Sigg > Tadic / Mane & Ulloa > Sakho or even Ings for a punt.

    Falling Stars update GW9

Blurb..Falling stars is a fictitious team/squad made up of players who have all fallen in price since the opening GW and are collectively valued on, or less than, the original 100 mill budget

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/10/24/sky-sports-focus-gameweek-11/?hc_page=3#hc_comment_8626269

Went for a novel approach this week by including players selected by The Puntmaster, Doosra and Arvi Nation from published articles, or in the case of Doosra straight forward nagging..plus a few of my own picks and the FFS recommended pick. All picks happily fell into the “falling stars” criteria so it was a good opportunity to do the experiment…and see just how good the punters are.

    Howard 2pts

    Coleman 2pts Gibbs 5pts Pocognoli 1pt

    Sanchez (c) 32pts Milner 1pt Barkley 1pt Eriksen 2pts Oscar 2pts

    Zamora 5pts Bony 13pts

    (Sczcezny Benteke Kolarov Luis )

66pts for the GW and once again beating the GW avg of 38 pts..well done boys.

Looking at the following transfers for -4 as a way of getting Sanchez in:

    Sterling -> Sanchez
    Sigurdsson -> Mane
    Pelle -> Berahino

Yes, I know the last of those is transferring out Pelle, but hear me out. Mane is looking very promising for points from Saints, and Berahino is keeping pace with Pelle so far.

I see it as losing 2 depreciating assets (Sterling and Sigurdsson), and bringing in 3 good prospects, at the cost of losing Pelle.

    What do you think?

Oof, that has GOT to sting!

I've got a terrible squad balance this week - only 3 outfield players playing on MD2, everyone else on MD1. I have some good looking options in those players but I really need to get it right first time this week.

I left my only decent player in my reserves (Ade, was nearly certain Soldado/Kane would start and he's crap anyway)

Had Robertson, so of course Hull would keep a CS when he's not there 🙄

          Captaincy nightmare (Aguero's 0 –> Chadli's 1 –> Guzan's 2 😆 ) Might get 3 next week...

Subbed Hutton in early as I wasn't going to get up at 5am for lineups, but that only cost me a point so meh.

Ending up with Guzan captain is a sure sign of problems!

Accidentally leaving Chester in my reserves was a proper pain for me - was desperate for Liverpool to score when I realised!

Adebayor ended up being my captain - him and Berahino dragged me to an ok score this week. My lack of players in the Manchester derby feels like I'm horribly exposed this time round.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Best money saving midfield picks

Budget to mid price midfield differentials. With many struggling to fit in so many great and expensive midfield options I thought I'd start a discussion on some budget to mid price options. Sigurdsson is a contender to be swapped out for many, while others may be looking to move on a Liverpool midfielder.

So whether you are looking to shift one of those players mentioned out or happy to give advice please leave your thoughts here on the best money saving midfield picks over the next few gameweeks.

I've in a similar conundrum and looking to get rid of Siggy. Have 2 FT's and no better option this week. Having said that, I'm struggling to find a worthwhile replacement given that I will want Siggy back in 3 weeks time.

I can get anyone below 6.8 (but no Mane because of 3 Saints already) or even 7.3 (if I use one of my FT's to downgrade Begovic to Foster).

Cabella,Downing,Moses,Chadli,Barkley are the ones that come to mind but I'm unconvinced. I get the feeling I will really struggle with this all week!

Mane would be my pick for those who haven't already maxed out on Saints players. Next in line has to be Chadli...stats still strong and a great Sigurdsson replacement.

Other than that slim pickings - Moses is one I think will be consistent - 5-6 pts many weeks, but nothing spectacular.

The trouble is in this price bracket goals are rare and tend to be from range. Plus midfielders in this budget tend to be poor finishers in comparison to more expensie options like Sanchez or Sterling.

the key guide for me is corners, crosses and chances created. Assists I think are the likliest source of points from this bunch.

Downing is the best pick when you look at chances created and shots in the box but with Sakho out and some tricky fixtures in the next 3 (sto,AVL,eve) I'm not convinced.

Any chance that Chadli could be dropped? Read it a few pages ago that he could be replaced by Townsend

Sigurdsson is the best option for me. He was never going to keep up the ridiculous form at the start of the season. But it's obvious Swansea are a good side and that Bony is a good striker. He'll continue to be at the centre of their attacking moves and will get a very respectable amount of points.

Barkley, Mane, Diame. Hopefully another Budget Alternatives article this week! Struggling to think of 3 proper ones though...1 or 2 are a little dodgy 😆 Might move onto Budget alternatives to popular options like your above Hot Topic.

All the best value picks are in defence and attack. Up front particularly, you'd expect Pelle, Welbeck, Sakho, Berahino and probably even Austin to outscore any equivalently priced midfielder.

Siggy is still great for the price, but its slim pickings elsewhere. Chadli and Mane both offer serious goal threat, but Mane's fixtures are soon to go down the toilet, and Chadli has not been performing as well recently. Apart from those, you could look at a teams main creative source, the likes of Downing, Moses and Brunt, who will get assists, but not many goals. You could say the same about Siggy, but he combines genuine threat and quality in open play with set piece dominance, whereas the alternatives seem to rely on one or the other.

very left field but Mason seems like he could worth considering. I watched the last 2 Spurs games and he played very well in both. He sits very deep which is the main concern with him and is overlooked due to Chadli/Erickson.

He does seem to get forward and has a very good boot on him, a couple outside the box shots that were very close/threatening.

Have not seen him mentioned anywhere. If he was 4.5 would be ideal 5th mid but at a price tag of 5mil it's hard to fit him in as you wouldn't play him every week. One for the Puntmaster perhaps!?

Can't understand all the fuss about Siggi he's the playmaker for a solid team and will always be around the points.
Barring a season ending injury I'll be keeping him till the end.
Got Moses in a couple of weeks ago he'll always chip in with assists and is also excellent at falling over in the box.

    Forster

    Chambers Shawcross Baines

    Eriksen Sterling Fab Siggy

    Welbeck (c) Aguero Pellè

I think he will start this week and would have liked to have him but can't wait that long as Plan B transfers would be ruled out by then.

Have got Baines in for Wilson and getting Hazard in for Sterling soon. Getting Costa in would mean no Baines, just Chambers and also losing Welbz this week. Doesn't seem worth it even by having the best (c) of the week.

Would you risk ditching any of these guys to bring in someone like Naismith (only good option left) who woul allow me to upgrade a midfield to Theo for example?

It's a great front 7 apart from Ulloa, but I wouldn't be getting rid of him for a home game against WBA, it seems unecessary when he could easily score 1-2.

Save the FT then it'll be much easier to free up funds without a hit to upgrade next week.

    Transfer Dilemma:

It is one of the weeks where I might regret transferred out player.
    Begovic(WHM)
    Clyne(hul)-Chester(SOU)-Baines(SWA)
    Di Maria(mci)-Sterling(new)-Tadic(hul)-Siggy(eve)
    Aguerro(MUN)-Costa(QPR)-Ulloa(WBA)

    4.0-PVA(cry)-Boyd(ars)-Taylor(eve)
    2FT- 0.0 In The Bank

Weaker links are Begovic,Sterling,Siggy & Ulloa. Can't find any replacement for Siggy at similar price & don't want to lose others this week.

That way, I am leaning towards Di Maria ➡ Hazard.
Hazard has been one of the best players on the pitch but rarely returns the points deserved for his value.Hopefully, QPR is the fixture to mark the avalanche.
