Champions League 2014/15 – FantasyiTeam Matchday 5 Picks

As you’ll know by now, we’ve joined forces with Fantasy iTeam (FiT) for this season’s Champions League campaign. With Matchday 5 only hours away – due to two matches (CSKA Moscow vs Roma and BATE Borisov vs Porto) kicking off at 5pm GMT– we’re back with our latest round of picks for your perusal.

A free Fantasy football app, FiT is available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android. It’s free to download and play, so you can already go in and start drafting up your starting XI, with unlimited transfers right up until 10 minutes before this evening’s first kick-off.

We’re supporting FiT throughout the competition and have an official Fantasy Football Scout League, with an iPad mini available to the winner. There’s also a VIP European Match Day Experience for two on offer for the overall winner of the Fantasy iTeam Champions League game.

Having rolled out a Rule Guide and taken a look at some of the best budget options in the player price list, we now get to grips with the upcoming schedule and offer four player tips for the next two evening’s matches.

Tuesday

Sitting in second spot in Group H, Shakhtar Donetsk entertain bottom club Athletic Bilbao knowing that a win will earn them a spot in the knockout stages. Having opted for Luiz Adriano last time around, we turn our attentions to Alex Teixera for this evening’s encounter – the latter has notched three times in this season’s competition and warmed up for this one by netting in Friday’s league win over Karpaty Lviv. Fielded in “the hole” behind Adriano, Teixera sets you back £5.9m in this week’s FantasyiTeam price list.

There’s no doubt that CSKA Moscow have been in poor form domestically but visitors Roma will face a tough task in the wintery conditions later today. Bearing in mind Seydou Doumbia (£6.5m) has scored three of his side’s five goals in this year’s tournament, his display looks vital to the hosts’ chances of clinching a victory that would see them overtake Rudi Garcia’s side in Group E.

After giving their chances of qualification a shot in the arm with a 4-2 home win over Schalke, Sporting Lisbon will be optimistic of another win in front of their own fans as Maribor pay visit. Lone frontman Islam Slimani (£5.8m) opened his account for the campaign in the previous Matchday and will be looking to replicate the form that has seen him deliver four goals and an assist in seven league appearances to date.

Locked in a battle with Barcelona for top spot in Group F, Paris St Germain are in fine form ahead of a home encounter with Ajax. Laurent Blanc’s side have now won seven successive matches in all competitions and have collected a clean sheet in each of the last three in front of their own fans. Raiding left-back Maxwell has racked up a goal and three assists in the league so far and, at a price of £5.9m, offers a decent shout for points at both ends of the pitch.

Wednesday

Group A leaders Atletico Madrid looks poised to strengthen their spot at the summit tomorrow. With Diego Simeone’s side seeking a fourth successive victory at home to Olympiacos, we can’t look past the influential Koke in the centre of the park here. The £7.3m-priced midfielder has already racked up three goals and an incredible 13 assists for last year’s beaten finalists and has the form to wreak havoc on the Greek defence.

Despite taking a single point from their last three, Zenit are still in with a shout of making it out of Group C. The Russians need a big result at home to Benfica to boost their chances and there’s no doubt that Hulk (£8.1m) looks a key protagonist in this one. The Brazil international snatched a weekend winner over Kuban Krasnodar to take his tally to eight goals and five assists in the league this term and is clearly a man in form.

The bottom two in Group D go head-to-head tomorrow as Anderlecht entertain Galatasaray. A win for the Belgians would ensure they at least qualify for the Europa League and they’ll be looking for Aleksandar Mitrovic to deliver again. Emerging from the bench to net against Arsenal last time around, he’s since cemented a starting role up front and has now scored in each of his last three appearances. The Serbian, who now has eight league goals to his name, sets you back just £5.8m.

Finally, we’re backing Bayer Leverkusen to get the better of visitors Monaco tomorrow. Given that a win for the home side would clinch Group C with one match remaining, they’ll be keen to go on the offensive – Karim Bellarabi has yet to open his European account but has racked up five goals and a pair of assists in the Bundesliga to date. The wide man warmed up for this one by finding the net in a weekend win at Hannover and is available for a budget-friendly £4.8m.

Fantasy Football Scout League

We’ve already set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for you to join, with an iPad mini on offer to the winner – the league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 11155.

Best replacement for Reus? Bale, Hazard or Nani with a big forward next to CR7 and Luiz Adriano?

I hope so I brought him in 🙂 They are pretty injured at midfield, Real at the moment. He also missed a long time with that injury so I can imagine he's still building up match fitness and would be eager for a game.

  3. UFPL winners and losers

If anyone is interested I've just undertaken an exercise to compare the total points for all players in FPL vs UFPL to see who the major winners and losers are under the alternative scoring systems.

My reason for looking into this was basically when I noticed at the weekend that Fabregas scored 11 points with 1 assist and Costa scored 5 points with 1 goal. When I looked at the detail it made sense – Costa was punished for missing 3 big chances, Fabregas was rewarded for 6 key passes, 2 big chances created and 11 recoveries. Personally I like this approach.

A brief analysis showed that players generally score around 10% higher in UFPL, although interestingly (I’m playing fast and loose with the word here) forwards are only around 5% better off in UFPL whilst goalkeepers and defenders are 15% better off. Something to bear in mind for UFPL players once the transfer window reopens perhaps?

Anyway, that led me to come up with two UFPL data sets – one with no adjustments made and one which I adjusted to bring the average scores in line with FPL by dropping defenders’ scores 15%, forwards’ scores 5%, etc. It just felt easier to compare which players were relatively better off by making this adjustment, but I’ve presented both sets of data as I can’t actually decide which makes more sense.

Anyway, plotting the gains/losses of players in UFPL vs FPL gives the following views. Unadjusted and adjusted UFPL figures are in separate tabs. The results are understandably very similar either way but there is some slight reordering as a result of the adjustment. https://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPLvsUFPL/FPLvsUFPLPoints

Headlines are that centre backs gain most from the UFPL scoring system – 4 of the top 6 beneficiaries are CBs. Tadic and Costa noticeably interrupt that pattern, their efforts which are overshadowed by team mates in FPL bonus terms are rewarded in the UFPL game.

At the other end of the scale full backs suffer most in UFPL – FPL favourites such as Clyne, Baines, Ivanovic, Coleman… all feature at the bottom of the table. Of course this is all relative – these players have still been worth having, they just haven’t stood quite as far above colleagues as they have in FPL.

(For those who don’t play UFPL, the scoring is explained in full here: http://ultimate.premierleague.com/a/rules. Basically, there are no bonus points, instead actions are rewarded directly to a player during the course of the games)

😆 Missing deadlines is trivial compared to not realising that Ashley Williams is relatively better than Neil Taylor in the scoring system.

My deadline issue is the opposite.I know I'll miss them on Sunday so always make them Saturday night...Ade and Chadli in didn't work out as I planned. Not many points lost though but its the only way I can be both a parent and play UFPL.

I tend to pray to the heavens that my signal is good enough whilst traipsing round shops/sea life centres/soft play areas so that I can make informed changes in a timely fashion. So far my luck has held but it's been a close run thing once or twice. If I were in with a shot of winning I would have to make some changes to my weekends to protect my opportunity 🙂

Interesting. I'm determined to do better with my January transfers. I think just about the only right thing I did over the summer transfers was focus on Chelsea mids. Ramsey and Sterling have been huge let downs and a complete waste of money.

Sterling did well for a short while but has tailed off horribly. I was flying high for a while but the likes of Adebayor, Dzeko, Sterling, Ramsey have all stopped bringing points for one reason or another. My squad balance was about right, I just picked the wrong players!

Krul has saved me in recent weeks....although with Mannone and McCarthy he is my only goalkeeper until January.

Goalkeeper rotation was one of my research successes - Krul, Guzan, De Gea gives 2 or 3 bites at the cherry pretty much every week until January and all have contributed well. Further up the pitch I started to find the permutations a bit trickier and ended up winging it.

Love this! I did something similar at the start of the season based on last year's points. That showed that full backs (Baines, Kolarov, etc) benefited much more than CBs, and the type of forwards that score a lot but don't get involved in creative play (Dzeko, Lambert, etc) did the worst. Not sure that holds up this year given this analysis

I think the Sandro injury is bad news for those new owners of Yun, a really good holding midfielder but unfortunately very injury prone.

    UCL fantasy:

    Pardo - Moya
    Cahill - Azpili - Miranda - Godin - Caiçara
    Reus - Milner - Matuidi - Bellarabi - Brahimi
    Ronaldo - Muller - Welbeck

Considering 5 transfers since 2 are injured and 1 probably out
Also, have played my WC in GW3 and just want players that are probable to play both games (5 and 6)

Azpili, Miranda, Reus, Milner and Welbz -> Danilo, Maicon, Hazard, Naingolan and Hulk

    Thougts?

Not sure about double Porto defense since they probably won't keep a clean against Shakthar in 6 and will play on the second day so that could be tricky. I really don't know much about Nainngolan so can't comment on him. Don't think Hulk is a good pick.

Hulk its man who scored more goals vs Benfica.
        Talisman

Naingolan because Roma has all to play in the next 2, as Zenit.

FCP, probably 2 its over the top.
Could do PSG defender but they play last at Barca

    What are Forster owners doing?

I have the added complication that I have Bertrand, and I'm happy to keep hold of him and I can cover his less favourable fixtures with rotation, but I really want Chelsea defence.

On the same boat, was nailed on Forster -> Fabianski and Clyne -> Azpil.

But now I'm torn whether I should just hold Clyne esp having him since GW 1 and he got his attacking threat like Bertrand too.

I'm tempted Forster -> Courtois directly.

Interesting. I was looking at the exact same moves. I'm not sure Forster > Fabianski is worth a transfer to be honest and I already hence Naylor.

I'll see what the status is on Baines, Downing and Chadli, but Forster > Courtois up until January is looking pretty logical right now

Funnily enough I can afford Pelle > Austin, Chadli > Hazard and Forster > Fabianski for -4 with 0.0 ITB after. Probably won't do it though and might look at a way that allows me to sell Downing instead of Chadli (injuries permitting) which would probably involve Forster > Heaton

The reason I consider Fabianski is I don't have Swansea defense.

Swansea + Chelsea defense seems solid from now til Jan. But keeping Clyne is a dilemma

Both will go (Kun+Austin), but I don't want to take a hit for Kun this week.

There is a high chance that Pelle will drop tonight.

Bony is only 50-60% towards a rise, so if he does rise it is unlikely to be before Friday.
