Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 13

A couple of London-based centre-halves were the latest to topple off the Suspension Tightrope over the Gameweek 12 action. West Ham skipper Winston Reid and QPR’s Richard Dunne both earned their fifth cautions of the campaign against Everton and Newcastle respectively and, as a result, are set to serve one-match bans this weekend.

Reid’s absence for Saturday’s home encounter against Newcastle hands Sam Allardyce a dilemma at the back. The Hammers boss rolled out a 3-5-2 at Goodison but is expected to return to a four-man backline, with James Tomkins alongside James Collins in the heart of defence.

With Dunne forced onto the sidelines, Rio Ferdinand could be in line for a return to action for the first time since Gameweek 7 as Harry Redknapp’s side welcome Leicester to Loftus Road. The former United man has only just completed a three-match ban but could be set to partner Steven Caulker against the Foxes on Saturday afternoon.

We now have as many as 18 players sitting on the Suspension Tightrope and with the fixtures coming thick and fast over the next month, there are a number of popular Fantasy picks sailing close to a ban. Chelsea duo Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa are the most high profile, with both sitting in over 50% of FPL sides. Costa certainly has his work cut out to avoid incurring the referee’s wrath – he’s been booked in all four of his appearances on the road and now faces five away trips in the eight Gameweeks between now and New Year.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle is also just one caution away from a ban. Owned by over 30% of FPL managers, he’s second only to Costa in popularity amongst forwards – at a time where rest and rotation are rife, many Fantasy managers will be hoping to avoid the nightmare scenario where both strikers are booked in the same Gameweek.

Both Newcastle and Hull are the worst affected, with three players apiece. The in-form Magpies duo Daryl Janmaat and Moussa Sissoko are also amongst those perilously close to a one-match suspension, as are Swansea defenders Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams ahead of a very kind schedule for Garry Monk’s men.

In terms of other new suspensions, Claudio Yacob lasted just 28 minutes of his first league start under Alan Irvine before this two-footed challenge on Diego Costa earned him an early bath and subsequent three-match ban.

Hull’s Gaston Ramirez will out sit out the next trio of fixtures after being dismissed for violent conduct at the weekend. Steve Bruce may have slammed Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen for his part in the Uruguayan’s sending off on Sunday but, in spite of his protestations, the Tigers boss has admitted he’s unlikely to appeal to the FA.

Two other players remain on the sidelines due to previous indiscretions. Tottenham’s Kyle Naughton serves the second of a two-match ban at home to Everton, whilst Villa’s Christian Benteke misses the last of a three-match suspension as Paul Lambert’s side roll up to fellow strugglers Burnley.

Lost on last article 🙁 I'm crumbling to ashes re posting this again, could do w/ some opinions fellas, appreciated in advance 😉

So my transfers this week come down to two solid options & whether a hit is necessary. Planning on taking out Clyne & Bego next week bar any more injuries, for JT & Guzan.
The consensus last night in the DZ was a majority A vote, but more & more I feel I need another big hitter to start to climb the rankings (awful rank 140k right now). Will A do? Current team.

    Bego/Gilks
    Baines | Dummet | Duff
    Sanchez | AdM | Hazard | Siggy
    Pelle | Aguero | Sakho

A*s: Marney, Wisdom, Clyne (o.6m ITB, 1 FT)

    (All hit except A)
    A) Pelle --> Bony (C)
    B) Pelle + Clyne ----> Bony(C) & JT
    C) Pelle + Clyne ----> Rooney(C) & Yun
    D) Others?

    1. Not Irish
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

Mate, I'd be transferring Sakho out instead of Pelle. Almost resigned to selling Baines as well. That said if Baines to uber affords you Rooney and Bony up top for Pelle and Sakho, which I doubt it does, I'd think hard about it.

lol I overlooked your mention of .6m ITB. Apologies.

        If Baines is out...

That sounds like a great move, secretly hoping Baines stubs his toe now 😉
I'd need to downgrade Clyne as well to afford that, & that might be a solid option going forwards.
Cheers 🙂 How's your Berahinho situation going along?

You don't like either one of Bolasie/Jedi right?
That's only two injuries you're looking at Mupps, nothing a hit can't fix right now 🙂

A is a good move, not sure if I would captain him though... However Pelle could easily get a goal vs City. Quite like the look of C as well, as I fancy Rooney to do well. Bego would be a big concern for me, not impossible for the to keep a CS at Anfield with Liverpool's form atm, so you could probably wait a week as you suggested.
I would probably go with A, but (C) is a bit risky though, but could pay off! 😀

    5. Guidinho

C can work well, QPR have some good home fixtures in next 6, just depends who your other defender is to rotate with. I also think Rooney very viable option especially if you do not have ADM.

If taking a 4 point hit try and evaluate more over a longer period like 3 GW, so dont be afraid that you don't make the hit up instantly. Also I think this week you will see a lot of players with hits, also expect a few 5th YC on route this weekend so unlikely you will lose much ground if you take the hit.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

Wow, thanks for the detailed response there Guidinho 🙂
That's some great food for thought though, you make a good case for Rooney & Yun will play on his debut for me. I agree, the hit is justified long term taking into account Palace & QPR, all plum fixtures, with AdM & Rooney ready to explode in any of them.

Will definitely ponder on this one, I think a calculated risk is necessary right now in my position & a great differential captain so slip in the t10k soon.

        Cheers 😉

I'd just do Pelle to Bony this week. Hopefully you did it last night before Pelle's price fell.

A Chelsea defender should be near the top of your wish list. Have you considered Cahill over Terry? I wouldn't do this for a -4 though - save until next week - and I would also play Clyne against city this gw. Form over fixtures IMO.

Rooney isn't worth it in your position. You already have ADM. What has Rooney done recently other than score on the counter attack against a desperate arsenal side? Also there really are too many other Man U players vying for the points.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

Yes, a Chelsea defender is definitely up there & will likely be my go to for next week.
I think JT's form in Europe is getting hard to ignore, sooner or later those points will transfer domestically & I want to reap his goals immediately.

You're unto something about starting Clyne, but I feel City's pace on the flanks will undo Clyne's attacking threat. He might have finally found a nice match up against Clichy.
Will think about it for sure though

Yeah you're right about Rooney's promise, but a big part about about rising in rankings is catching the bandwagons before they're actually wagons 😉
This could be the week before Rooney smashes the template. I'd rather capitalize now, than next week 😉 He is risky though, I'll give you that.

Thanks for the reply Gylfi, much appreciated 🙂

What do the stats say about Navas? Is he worth a shout for a couple of weeks as a Chadli replacement? He is nailed on at least.

I know I am posting every 2 minutes about a new replacement but it is really turning my head. Other that Chadli and Downing, all options under 7 seem bad and have bad fixtures (already have Siggy)

But shouldn't the top scoring FPL players be rewarded for their consistency? I can only see this being achieved by something like double points throughout the year perhaps, which I think would be unfair.

Yes they should, but there should be more than choosing the correct players in the first GW and then just keeping ahead of the pack because everyone starts to get those same players.

Would just like to see the ability to claw back a 200pt lead, after 1/4 of the season..

I don't think it is though...

I was just under 4k after GW1, then quickly dropped down to 600k, then back up to 10k in 2 GW's.

New players are consistently emerging, and the top scoring players each week are often surprising.

I just don't think you should really be aiming for the No.1 spot in a game with over 3 million players. Almost impossible.

Would like to see an article on the pros/cons of taking hits. People seem to judge transfers on a week by week basis. I try and look back at the last 4 weeks to see if a transfer I made for a hit was worth it in the long run.

Baines, Chadli, Alcaraz and Downing owner. Very much considering a -8 going into Xmas particularly after being stung by Chadli

Taking hits for players who are fit seldom seem to be wise unless one of the players you are bringing in you are planning on captaining. Taking hits for injured players, however, are more acceptable to me depending on who your alternatives are on the bench and how long the player is due out for.

There are lots of variables/ issues, think it's just important to look back on a decision. I haven't owned costa and looking back, haven't missed out much by not owning him and fielding budget strikers/ right captain at the right time

Yeah - thats my general rule to - take a hit for a "strong" Capt choice , or when team in desperate need of surgery. However there are exceptions as always.

I want Haz in for Chadli but have exact funds so may be forced if Haz going to rise before Sat.

Yep. Of course there are always many variables to take into account in each and every instance but this is just a rule of thumb I tend to operate under.

If team needs surgery or you are wanting a form player urgently - dont see the any reason not to take hits. Im quite likely to take a - 8 this gw too ( first of season though).

Top 8 in world have all taken hits .

I tried to start writing one once - tied myself in knots trying to explain the permutations! Possibly didn't help I was trying to write about the psychology of hits as well as the maths involved, the concept of opportunity cost, the impact on captaincy decisions, etc. I reckon there's enough potential talking points for a sizeable book in the right hands! Of course no one would ever read it but that's not my point 🙂

      1. SouthCoastSaint
        • 12 Years

It would be a complicated post! Guess it would have to be a case study on one player and the impact of the transfers they've made and hits taken etc

Yep, some people take a very simplistic view of whether a hit has work or not but actually there's something of a butterfly effect if you really start to think about the implications. I'd love to read someone make a good fist of an analysis of that sort though.

Butterfly effect is a great way of describing it. For me the advantage of taking a hit over above dealing with injuries/captains etc is around bringing in an extra player I was planning on doing in a future GW earlier than planned. This tactically gives you an edge in terms of choices for the following GW. Gives you space and agility to act.

My hits are always with the next four to six in mind. You can get an immediate return but more often the success of a hit will make itself clear over time.

I took a hit for Austin in for Berahino last week

I think this is a poot example...especially if we are talking about taking hits being a positive.

I got Austin in this week for the same price he was last week, and didn't suffer a -4. Away for in-form NEW to me seemed like an obvious blank.

And technically you got -4 from him, not 0 🙂

There are two serious reasons apart from one's team being shite.

      To maintain/increase team value

To keep up with/stay ahead of/catch up to, the form curve.

      All else is jerky knee.

      Imo. 🙂

The only justifications for taking hits you think? Never really taken a hit to protect team value - would you say that's only worth doing in the early weeks?

I'd simplify it further and say there's only one reason for any FPL action - you think if you do it you'll end up with more points at the end of the season 🙂

I think a window of 4-6 weeks would be an appropriate time frame. Maybe tie it to Overall Rank somehow, in terms of how many places did the points cost or gain?

    7. tm245
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

Oh, and a DGW is a great reason.

Never understood why people save their WC until then since we can all get the same team anyway, and hopefully an early WCS can get the points and team value gains that enable a stronger January WC. One or two crafty DGWS punts or captaincy choices and you might even out gain the person who used the WC.

would say if u are missing out on an impt player and he has a good fixture..i will take a hit...preferably long term

I only look at these things on a one week basis to begin with.
Becasue, who knows what influence injury / suspension / rest / rotation will have over the next 2, 4, or even 10 weeks?

Now, I appreciate that we should / could take a longer term view however, the *decision tree* just gets far too complex to really know if a *hit* paid off over the longer term.
(Also, what arbitrary number do we even consider to be *long term*?)

So in the end, I take an oversimplified assessment of hits on a weekly basis first:
(New Transfers Points Earned - Hits) - (Old Players Points Earned) = ?

Then, I tally up all these weekly scores & if I managed a positive number on the year I consider all the hits I took over the season to be a success.

There's a lot of stigma around taking hits, but many players have proven that taking regular -4s can be a perfectly valid strategy. Must be extremely hard though.

The best analogy to me is play poker with a super-aggressive style.
      - High Risk/Reward
      - Big swings in your points
      - Perfectly valid strategy with enough practice

the obvious hole being that the biggest advantage of an aggressive poker style is it throws your opponents off...where-as in FPL, you're basically playing against yourself.

          I don't like single goalies.
Your defence is unbalanced, and I am not a fan of Azpilicueta.
Your midfield needs just a touch more thought, imo. Sigurdsson right out of form, di Maria heading in same direction.

With this, I do not agree. Lot of rubbish talked about Rio - not least by his former devotees. 😉

my bigger issue with Yun is not Rio but Sandro

I have still not decided between Yun and Hutton. I doubt it matters either way, that spot is cursed

Oh I know. But surely he won't be straight back in the team. And Yun does bring some attacking nous, which is filthy value for 3.9m you know.

I'm expecting big things from di Maria in next few weeks and want to get him in this week. Should I

    A) hazard > di Maria
    B) cesc > di Maria
    C) sanchez > Di Maria

    Or none of the above

After moving out Pelle for Rooney, all I got left is an extra free transfer and am planning to move out Chadli for a midfielder under the price of 4.7m. Basically, the midfield is Di Maria, Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Brady and Marney - two cheapies.

But I'm going all out on the attack with Aguero, Costa and Rooney.

I think that you are mistaken to do that.

          I have only Agüero.

          Putting money into midfield. 🙂

          GW 13:

          Fabianski
          Chambers, N Taylor, Baines
          Sánchez(vc), Yaya Touré, Hazard(c), Oxlade-Chamberlain
          Agüero, Eto’o, Austin

          Begovic; Dummett, Clyne, Downing, ... - 4 , 0.1 ITB

Yaya? One assist and a goal in his last two games, things starting to kick up for him now ey. 😀

I like how your team differs from the current template. Out of curiosity, why Oxlade?

I wouldn't. A brace in an international friendly (despite the free kick being lovely) is not really much to go on.

Apologies, didn't make my case clear.

Priority is to get Rooney with plans to move Pelle out. After that, I am left with 4.7m of a midfielder after moving Chadli out who is expected to continue to remain sidelined.

What do you reckon? Have 2 FTs.

Ohhhh I see now. Well in that case, not the worst. I'm keeping an eye on Viccy Wanyama actually, type of cheap mid that gets gametime undoubtedly and can score a goal (has a history of doing so) but Brady is a good call in that situation absolutely 🙂

            Thanks Som for your feedback.

My defenders are also playing tough opponents going into this weekend. I have double Southampton defenders - Clyne and Bertrand, Wisdom, Yun and Bruce. Very poor defence but I'm considering taking hits but not sure if it's worth it.

And not really keen on getting in another Southampton player, though. Have three tough fixtures coming up as well. 😀

He looked very bright against Spurs and nearly scored. That said, they have awful fixtures for the next few and can't see those switching to him from Boyd right now being a good use of a transfer. Those with Albrighton, though, I can see getting Brady over Boyd for sure.

Thinking hard about it. But with all the injuries ATM having a hard time justifying the uncertainty over his fitness. And if HBA is fit he may not even be on FKs and/or pens.

Any recommendation for a midfielder under 4.7m? Moving Pelle and Chadli out for Rooney and a midfielder under that value.

Hope Chadli or Downing is fit. TBH I'd probably opt for Bony in that situation and bring in a better option in midfield.

I'd assume at his price, people are looking at him as a 5th mid only.

In which case, especially over Xmas, my main concern is someone who is nailed on and will always return 2-3 points if I have to bring him on.

Brady, whilst potentially explosive, doesn't fit the bill.

    Gents,

Season going relatively well (top 5k), but now facing a bit of a squad crisis.

    Krul - Elliot
    Chambers - Baines* - Bertrand - Moore* - Chester*
    Sanchez - Fabregas - Siggy - Boyd - Isgrove*
    Aguero - Costa - Austin

    2.5 itb

Already used transfer to get Siggy back for Tadic, and planned on taking out Isgrove for a hit this week...for either Chadli or Downing (both now injured!)

    Any ideas?

Could play Boyd and hope Baines is fit (means playing Bertrand tho). Or could take a hit for Chester/Moore > Azpi?
