Scout Notes – Gameweek 28 – Tuesday

Aston Villa record a rare win as Christian Benteke casts aside a lengthy goal drought. Saido Berahino is on target once again, Sadio Mane puts an end to Southampton’s rocky patch and bags his seventh of the campaign, whilst Dame N’Doye alerts Fantasy managers with his third strike in four.

Relief for Villa and Benteke

At long last, Aston Villa put their 12-match winless streak to bed with an incident-packed 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. The Villains’ first win since early December coincided with Christian Benteke’s first goal in 16 outings, as the Belgian striker bagged his fourth of the campaign with a penalty deep into stoppage time. Gabriel Agbonlahor opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, snapping a 14-match goal drought of his own.

Tim Sherwood named just one change to the side that lost 1-0 to Newcastle last time out, drafting in Charles N’Zogbia to replace Scott Sinclair. The 28-year-old midfielder lined up in the number 10 role behind a front two of Benteke and Agbonlahor.

Villa now face a potential momentum-building pair of match-ups away to Sunderland and home to Swansea before embarking on a brutal run of fixtures until the penultimate Gameweek (mun, tot, QPR, mci, EVE, WHU, sou). We’ll be keeping a close eye on Benteke in the coming weeks to ascertain whether his late goal proves to be the catalyst for a return to form.

Berahino papers over cracks

For the third time in four Gameweeks, Saido Berahino was on target for the Baggies, notching his 12th goal of the season. Although impressive in recent clashes, the 21-year-old’s goalscoring exploits have diverted attention away from the Midlanders’ dearth of creativity. In the last four Gameweeks, West Brom have only mustered a combined total of nine shots on target; in fact, Berahino’s goal against Villa was their only effort on target and one of three attempts altogether. West Brom are to be commended for taking their chances, but it’s a worrying trend that’s worth observing in their upcoming fixtures.

Brown Ideye also passed a late fitness test and was selected in Pulis’ unchanged XI. The physical forward spearheaded the visitors attack – with Berahino operating in “the hole” behind – but couldn’t engineer a single attempt on goal throughout the 90. Nonetheless, Fantasy managers that invested in the strike duo will be hopeful of attacking returns in light of West Brom’s schedule – besides an unforgiving trip to the Etihad, three winnable home ties (STO, QPR, LEI) in the next four provide a platform for their forwards to flourish.

Southampton’s Mane man

Sadio Mane (6.6) registered his fifth strike in nine matches as Saints’ broke a 378-minute barren spell in front of goal, recording their first victory in four Gameweeks. The Senegal international is fast establishing himself as the premier pick in the 6.0–7.0 price bracket, particularly with the likes of Stewart Downing (6.7) and Gylfi Sigurddson (6.5) suffering from a lack of form. Beyond a trip to Stamford Bridge next Gameweek, Southampton’s schedule throws up a host of favourable match-ups (BUR, eve, HUL, sto), which could trigger an increase on Mane’s 1% ownership.

Meanwhile, Dusan Tadic and Florin Gardos were demoted as Eljero Elia and Filip Djuricic muscled their way back into Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up. Saints rearguard recorded their third clean sheet in five matches, much to the delight of Nathaniel Clyne’s (35%) and Ryan Bertand’s (19%) substantial ownerships. Toby Alderweireld was only fit enough for the bench after recovering from a hamstring problem but is expected to return to the starting XI next time out.

Crystal Palace tasted defeat on their travels for the first time under Alan Pardew’s stewardship. Mile Jedinak began his four-match ban after being charged with violent conduct by the FA for elbowing Diafra Sakho last weekend. Joe Ledley and James McArthur were recalled to the Eagles midfield, while Dwight Gayle was tasked with leading the line in the absence of the suspended Glenn Murray. In spite of last night’s blank, the Eagles’ fixtures still look promising for their maian Fantasy assets – Pardew’s side host QPR, West Brom and Hull over the next six and also travel to Stoke and Sunderland.

N’Doye turning heads

Having only been afforded a 35-minute cameo against Stoke City last Saturday due to fatigue, Dame N’Doye netted his third goal in as many starts as Hull City shared the spoils with Sunderland. The 5.5-priced frontman was welcomed back into the starting line-up alongside Nikica Jelavic, who’d recovered from a knee injury, while Gaston Ramirez and Sone Aluko dropped out to accommodate the pair. With Saido Berahino, Papiss Cisse and Diafro Sakho all vying for our attention around the 5.5 price point, and Hull set to duel seven of the league’s top eight sides in their last 10, N’Doye remains a speculative – yet potentially profitable – punt.

With regards to the visitors, Jack Rodwell marked his first appearance since January with his second goal in three outings. In defence, Patrick van Aanholt missed out to Santiago Vergini, yet picked up three points for an assist on the equaliser. Despite earning a start against Manchester United last Gameweek, the Dutchman’s value as a budget defender looks to have dissipated with manager Gus Poyet’s recent full-back rotation – it’s now just one start in the last three, though his owners will be hoping his impact off the bench moves Van Aanholt back up the pecking order ahead of some very promising fixtures (AVL, whm, NEW, CPL).

I'd have Wollscheid coming on, rivals would have Puncheon and PvA respectively. Not a huge lot in it really.

Still....would be nice for him to nick a goal and subdue the worries we have over him.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Where is the most unusual place you've made a transfer?

This was discussed on the Scoutcast this week in which the team recounted how previous FPL winner SpiderMatt made his Gwk 38 transfers while up a mountain. Other unusual places have included toilets - particularly during wedding receptions that people foolishly arrange mid season.

Genuinely don't recall a strange place to make a transfer. I usually do them in advance if I'm going to be away from home.

For the start of this season I was actually in Amsterdam on the run up to GW1. I flew back that same morning and I was busy looking at options on FFS at the airport, on the drive home and still when I got back through to 11:30!

Wait for the answers. I'm looking for some great ones. I know of many who have sneaked off at a wedding reception to make a transfer - but I wonder if any grooms or brides have dared make a transfer mid vows?

Surely at wedding receptions you sneak off to check scores rather than make transfers. How many weddings have you been to that start before the 11.30am deadline? The only one that I have been to which started that early was in Czech Republic and was during the summer so no interesting transfer stories from that.

Btw, heard about the 'threesome' incident with ya during scoutcast. Terrific one!

In fact while I was watching the scoutcast this week myself, my dad was behaving a bit weird himself, since I was watching to four grown men with beards and laughing every now and then.. 😉 So had to brief him about it later! 🙂

Yeah my girlfriend woke up to see what looked like me on Skype with 3 bearded men, so I said "no it's fantasy football", which just made it look worse. She slept through it when I watched it last night, it's like some secret love affair with fantasy football.

Years ago Fpl wasn't blocked in work so have done many a transfer during operations as i work in a hospital theatre department these days it's not allowed and fpl is blocked but with a cheeky wifi code for my phone i still manage to get them done on the odd occasion i'm at work around deadline time. It is frowned upon though as were not allowed to have our phones on in clinical areas so always has to be done ninja stylie.........and therefore quite funny when ya get caught by the band 6 in charge.

What hospital do you work at? Just so I can make a note not to go there if I ever need surgery...

"I'm sorry, we lost him. Sadio Mane rose in price, the surgeon wasn't expecting it and he panicked. He only had 0.1 in the bank, and he threw the scalpel in anger. We did everything we could".

I was once mid-way through an eye-test at the opticians, and my phone notified me of a transfer someone had made in my draft league.

I asked the person conducting the test to bear with me while I checked an urgent work email 😉 I promptly saw that the player released by a rival was someone I desperately wanted so I made the transfer and the told the lady to proceed with the eye test.

      Priorities and all that...

I had just started seeing this girl at uni, we had spent the Friday night out with our mates on a big one and woken up next to each other. Just as we started a mid morning... you know... it suddenly dawned on my it was 10 minutes until the transfer deadline.

I'm ashamed to say I stopped right in the middle, told her I needed to pee quickly, grabbed my phone and ran to her toilet to make my transfers.

As I recall both players I brought in blanked but me and her have now been together for almost 5 years and we just bought our first place together - so maybe there is something to it.

Whilst on hols in the Gambia in Oct 2007 the hotel internet was down. I had to walk to the next town to do my pressing transfer! When I got there the internet café was shut so I walked back to the hotel complex for a few hours, caught a bit of sun and a few beers, then did the trek again! My missus thought I was barking of course!

I can't remember if the effort was worthwhile, but I do remember the transfer involved James McFadden so it probably didn't!!

Last season I made a transfer in a university meeting--it was very dull, a Tuesday night deadline and I knew I couldn't get home in time for the deadline. As I was logging into fpl on my laptop--nobody the wiser as I was supposed to be looking at the meeting documents on it--the stupid video on the sign-in page started playing an advert! I pretended it was in an email I was reading. I then proceeded to transfer, I think, Erikson in just in time for him to cool off.

Cruise ship off of grand caymen on Christmas night to get the Boxing Day fixtures. Storms took out the ship's Internet --- it cost me an arm and a leg --- and it took about 2 1/2 hours to get it sorted with the Internet going in and out........

      Oh and another one:

My dad, brother, fiancé and I were away on holiday in Canada with my Mum (the only one that didn't play FPL) when we were discussing the weekend's fixtures (near the beginning of last season). Slowly, it dawned on all of us that, as we were about to drive into a very rural part of Canada where an internet connection would be hard to come by, we were probably going to miss out on transfers before the games came around. So my dad pulled over to consult his navigator (me), leant over the map and whispered 'find us a McDonalds'. We ended up driving 10 miles off our planned route to get hold of McDonalds wifi. My mum had no idea. 😀

Other fast food restaurants are available.

Years ago when on holiday somewhere with no internet I drove a number of miles into the nearest town to make a transfer in an internet cafe. All of this was done under the pretence of needing holiday provisions.

Also done many a transfer in toilets, excusing myself from meetings, family events, all sorts really. In fact reading this back it looks like I have a bit of a problem!

On the way to Spain sharing Abu's with 40 other incredibly drunk hockey players. Got the whole bus involved somewhere in mid France whether to transfer in Coutinho or not.

By the time we made it to France (we inevitably broke down) Coutinho had scored against City. All those that helpedchopse him were "rewarded" for their success with plenty of alcohol.

I don't have to go that far in past to look for it. Happened with me yesterday.

Been travelling in Himalayas and got no internet on phone since last 4 days. Suddenly back to soooome civilization yesterday on road and mates on What's app been discussing about their transfers for yesterday (yes, I had no idea there were matches yesterday)

So, once I had place to stand, in almost dark with wind howling, posted here on slower than dial up and did PvA -> Rose

      and kept Mane 😀

Another one, in 2013 was travelling in Munich around Oktoberfest. No internet on phone on an indian SIM so took my ex's phone, switched on the wifi and made the transfer 😀

I was just surprised after just 3 games, someone came up with 68 pts.

      Take an average gw points of 60 + 15 spurs v qpr = 75.

I am in real crap for next week defensively. 1 FT. Thought i'd ask while some decent people are still online.

    Bertand & Clyne (Chelsea Away)
    Tripier (MCI)
PVA - Good fixture, but rotation risk
    Hutton - Suspended.

I have 1.1 million in the bank. Any thoughts ? Must have to play at least 1 Saints.

Bert & Clyne aren't too bad. I wouldn't expect a big scoreline in that game. Koeman will have them set out defensively. Chelsea will never bang in more than 2 goals in a game it's not possible. Van Aanholt im sure is ok now and wont be a risk. Maybe swap one of Bert or clyne out for someone else.

West brom at home to Stoke has clean sheet written all over it. Maybe McCauley or Lescott.

      Yep.

On a selfish note, without Doosra's tables, I've made some poor transfers.

Puts things into perspective. This is a game after all (ok sometimes it's for money), although you wouldn't think it at times.

Agreed. And I do consider some of the folks on here to be friends or know them to be really good people. So I guess it has just upset me to hear one of the best of them is doing so poorly.

Yes, there are events on here that really put things into perspective. However, while it may dampen interest in FPL, it just increases my admiration for, and attachment to, this community. This is different to other "community sites"; there is genuine affection and bonding on here.

I know to the uninitiated it would just look like a group of people with a bizarre attachment to a game - indeed my girlfriend doesn't understand why I spend time in work with my "internet buddies" - but it is more than that. Look at the volume of responses for Doosra, you wouldn't get that elsewhere, and they are not just arbitrary, meaningless comments; there is genuine emotion and concern behind them all.

It is a wonderful community of great people, and it transcends FPL. The fact that we know Doos for his love of wine, jazz, and of course stats tables, shows that there is depth here. As I have mentioned before, when I lost a close friend in the Bestival coach crash in 2012, the thoughts and care of people on here was a real source of help and comfort. Hopefully we can provide some measure of that to Doos.

Nice post, Doolittle and I agree. It is the same reason that I've been upset over this, you do feel a proper level of community attachment to folks on here.

He's having a great season, it's probably good for his rank that he can't damage his team by doing something like Aguero to Ideye based on stats 😉

Sanchez needs a rest based on how he played vs Everton, trying too hard and nothing was coming off for him.
