Scout Notes

Tuesday’s Scout Notes – Gameweek Twenty Two

Some brilliance from Nani and a typically cheeky finish from the “Little Pea” is just enough for United to grind down Stoke’s resistance at Old Trafford. Fulham claw their way back up the table as they brush past the injury-ravaged Baggies at the Cottage, while Birmingham do a job on Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, despite another Charlie Adam inspired attacking display…

Alex Ferguson sprung a couple of surprises in his starting lineup – Twitter fan, Rio Ferdinand was rested ahead of Sunday’s looming FA Cup clash with Liverpool, while Edwin van der Sar was again missing in goal with illness blamed for his absence. Wayne Rooney was the big absentee however – the ankle injury sustained late on against West Brom kept him out of this one. Javier Hernandez took his place, Chris Smalling assumed the role alongside Nemanja Vidic in defence.

Once again United won the game in second gear – rarely threatening to put the game beyond Stoke, despite the visitors affording them room to exploit their talents – particularly in the first-half. Nani enjoyed a strong game and emphasised his Fantasy value by notching his sixth goal and eleventh assist of the season; with 2 Bonus also arriving at his door, this was the sixth time that Nani has recorded double figures for FPL returns.

Rooney’s absence had a predictable effect on Dimitar Berbatov’s goal threat. Our Members can see for themselves that the Bulgarian often came deeper to start the play and his “Touches” and “Passes” confirm that he was heavily involved. With just one attempt on goal however, Berbatov was again happy to forgo opportunities to score without Rooney’s prompting and feeding in tandem. Hernandez had far fewer touches, made fewer passes but had 3 attempts on goal, one of which was his smart, improvised finish for the opening goal which help to earn him 3 Bonus Points.

Ian Holloway handed a start to Matt Phillips who was rewarded for a number of eye-catching displays from the bench. Elsewhere, Blackpool lined up as expected in a 4-3-3 formation.

Charlie Adam offered some reward for the faith put in him by FPL Managers; the Scot dominated the game for long periods from the middle of the park and only the post denied him a goal in a performance that was again acknowledged with FPL Bonus Points.

Alex McLeish dropped Jean Beausejour to his bench and handed starts to Keith Fahey and Alexander Hleb as Lee Bowyer began his three-match ban. The inclusion of Hleb certainly paid off as the Belarusian grabbed his first Premier League goal for the Blues, after a Stephen Crainey error. Hleb obviously has bags of ability and could be worth monitoring as he looks to find some consistency after struggling with injury and form.

Popular FPL defender had a Scott Dann grabbed the winning goal for Birmingham in the 89th minute, lifting them out of the relegation places and giving Birmingham their first win at Blackpool since 1960. Dann has now picked-up 67 FPL points this season a good return for a defender priced at just £4.8 million and this hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst FPL managers with an ownership of 10.4%.

Birimingham recorded their first away win of the season, a record that Birmingham-owning FPL Managers will be pleased to see the back of. Alex McLeish was also unsurprisingly jubilant with the outcome

“I’m absolutely delighted to win and mostly because it was away from home. It means people will stop asking about the away record. It is only one [win] in six months yet it is three valuable points.”

Mark Hughes opted for Senegalese striker Diomansy Kamara to spearhead his attack and this was the only change to the Fulham side which lost to Tottenham on New Year’s Day, the forward took the place of Andy Johnson in the lone striker role as the Welshman once again opted for a 4-4-1-1 formation.

Pre-match reports seemed to suggest that striker and Mousa Dembele would recover from an ankle injury and return to the line-up, but it appears that the Belgian striker failed to prove his fitness in time for the kick-off. Expect the player to be back in action for the next Premier League clash with Wigan on January 15, if not sooner in the FA Cup against Peterborough on Saturday.

FPL high-flyers Clint Dempsey and Brede Hangeland continued to prove their worth for both Fulham and Fantasy Managers by impressing a goal each. But it was Simon Davies who really won the FPL plaudits, notching-up a Gameweek total of 17 including: 1 goal, 2 assists and 3 bonus points.

James Hurst and Gianni Zuiverloon came into the West Brom defence in what was an otherwise unchanged starting line-up. They replace Steven Reid, who will be ruled out for six weeks after tearing his cartilage in Saturday’s defeat by Manchester United, and Ibanez Pablo who also suffered an ankle knock in the same game.

West Brom defender Marek Cech limped off after 33 minutes with a knock to be replaced by Nicky Shorey. The full extent of the injury is unclear and anything serious will come as a massive blow to a battered Baggies defence that, as well as those mentioned above, is already missing Gabriel Tamas through suspension and Jonas Olsson with an Achilles injury.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

I'm praying Bent doesn't play. I had Nani on the bench. Nobody was sure he was going to play and then he goes and plays an incredible game. If any other fantasy player on my team that's due to play tonight (I'm looking at you Elmohamadi) wants to not play tonight, I've be very grateful.

thoughts on how to improve our mini-league? We are 26 friends playing, and we have tried to adapt it over the years to keep everyone on their toes throughout the season, and this year we have paid £100 each.
And the money is divided roughly like this:
-£100 to the one that gets the furthest in the fantasy cup
-£200 to the winner of the hth-league
-£26 to the winner of each gw
-30% of the rest of the money to the runner up
-70% of the rest of the money to the winner
-and the looser has to pay £50 to the one who has the highest gw-score throughout the season.

Would be interesting to hear how the different minileagues are, and maybe copy some of your ideas for next season.

    Cheers.

He he! We had it like that a couple of years ago, but people tended to give up as soon as they couldn't win it anymore, but now they can still win money even if they are on the bottom half of the table.

you could run your own cup manually, we did that last year, we had 18 teams so the first round was seeded and was drawn between the bottom 4 teams, then we just did a draw for the rest last 16, last 8, semi and final obviously, standard head to head in that you need to outscore your opponent to progress.

If it reassure anyone I had a dream that Adam had a stormer against Liverpool and ripped them to shreds. I've had alot of luck when it comes to weird encounters with FPL: I went away out after the 1st half of a Sunderland match and while I was out I seen a K. Jones sign and got back to Kenwyne Jones scoring 17 points odd or so. Happened with Hunt aswell before when he played for Hull.

What effect do you think Dzeko will have on Tevez?

I can see Tevez dropping deeper into the hole, making him decent for assists, but less likely for goals.

Mancini won't be worried about 'resting' (yeah right!) either, so there will be a risk with them both.

Here's a nice little joke for everyone to laugh about:

Once upon a time, there was a man who decided to drop The Bale in favour of Elmander The Moose for one gameweek. The Bale went on to score 2 thumping goals against a dead Everton team, whilst Elmander The Moose plodded around a bit, and got subbed early.

Laugh at me all you want, but The Moose grabs a hat-trick, you'll be laughing on the other side of your faces! AHAHAHAHAHAHA!

This is a really stupid question.
When people say they are wilcarding on Gw27 does that mean they are wildcarding after Gw26 so they will have the players in for Gw27 or does it mean wildcarding after Gw27 so you'll have players for gw28????????? I'm really confused with this one.

My GKs and front 8 are pretty much definite:

      Foster Gordon
      Fabs Nani VdV Adam Barton
      Tevez Drogba Carroll

Only questions are in defence, I'll keep Coleman as I got him at 4.4, I want Rafael but that depends on the rotation - I would consider going for Vidic but that would mean only one of Kolarov and Bosingwa (also risks), one ultra cheapie (looking at Newcastle but 3 Newcastle players might be overkill, or Foley if he stays OOP) and one semi cheapie - probably Huth or Shawx depending on how much cash I've got spare. I think Stoke defs are definitely worth a look after GW28. If Bosingwa and KKolarov are both looking like not starting regularly then I might consider Alex if Chelsea get their sh*t together.

my front 8 is likely to be

        fabs vdv adam barton NASRI
        carroll tevez DEFOE

with defoe and nasri out after their doubleweek (guna wildcard after gwk25 so i get 2 freebies after gwk27)

if its likely rvp will start all arsenals games ill go for him over defoe for those 2 weeks

nasri to tim cahill after gwk27 looks a good option

Yea Cahill coming back and playing well would be a fly in my ointment as I wouldn't want to ship Fabs, Nani or VdV for him. I'm probably going to stick with Coleman for Everton coverage for the time being, although Baines is a beast.

I'm thinking about RVP for GW27 and switching to Drog on 28.

Sorry for being thick - can you explain that one again. So I have just 1 freebie at the moment, if I use my wildcard now would I

        1) Roll over the 1 freebie to next GW and still have that 1
        2) Roll over the 1 freebie to next GW and then have 2
        3) Lose them all.

    Hello!

I'm new here, so please go easy(ish) on me. Well, for the first day or so at least.

Up until the start of this season, I'd only ever played The Telegraph's fantasy football game, so I'm still getting used to all these bonus points, the rise and fall of values, wild cards, etc.

So here's my first amateur-ish question. How do I link my username on here to my team? Clearly, it would be a good start, and any help would be much appreciated.

Secondly, it's time for me to start thinking about playing my first wild card of the season, but someone had hinted to me that the more changes I make, the more overall value I lose. Is that correct? Is it always the case that you lose value on players that you sell? I'm a little confused.

Thirdly, if you're still reading...then thanks!

well done for linking team, there are some other helpful FAQs in this section worth looking at.

If you have not used your WC yet then you are doing well. For the first time this season there is an additional WC to be used in Jan. So as long as you use your WC before GW 27 you will have another one to use before the end of the season, this can be really handy with 6-8 weeks to go when you can change your team for the run in.

As for team values its worth checking out Total FPL and Fiso.co.uk for more info and predicted price changes also Torres Magic has a website that you can click thru to with price chnages for the forthcoming evening.

Why is it people are WCing in GW24, reason i ask is im guessing its for the many DGW players?

If you look at whos playing twice then:
Villa - seriously how many villa players do u want right now?
Blackpool - sureley a lot of people already have blackpool players?
    Fulham - fair enough
    Liverpool - see Blackpool
United - im guessing a lot of people already have 2 or 3 of Vidic/Rafael/Nani/Rooney/Berba already?
    Wigan - see Villa

I think with a couple of weeks to go surely most people will have the required players for then anyway? I for one wont be having 11 DGW players as ill want to keep my core of VDV & Nasri etc as they have an upcoming DGW anyway.

GW27 makes more sense to WC for me as their plenty of new DGW teams and few who have decent fixtures too follow so you could hold onto a lot of them.

Cheers guys, im glad at least some people agree, its justs seems mad using it to get DGWs when your most likely stocked up on Blackpool & Liverpool players for this week and Man Utd players anyway. Ill probably look at maybe 1 or 2 from the 3 remaining teams but i think u can go too overboard of DGW players.

After looking at my team I'm thinking I may be OK leaving the Wild Card until GW27 instead of GW24.

    What do you think?

    Foster/Krul
    Vidic Coleman Kolarov Simpson Konchesky
    Yaya Adam Nani VDV MGP
    Varney Drogba Torres

The only players I'd replace after GW23 would be Drogba(poss), Krul, Konchesky(poss) and MGP and if I didn't do any transfers I'd have 2 freebies for GW24 for maybe Drogba > Berbatov/Rooney.

Thinking of wildcarding my team to:

    Stockdale (Krul) / Hart
Hangeland / Rafael (Vidic) / Foley / Crainey (Evatt) / Dawson (Cole)
Lampard / Bale / Nani / Fabregas (Malouda)/ Van De Vart
Van Persie (Odemwingie)/ Campbell / Carroll

Will leave £0 in the bank. Waste of a wild card?

Oh, my god...YES! You will have loads of extra players! That's impossible, randompunter! You can only have 15 players EVER! Also, you should look into putting brackets around lots of your players. I have a feeling this will make them feel enclosed and typecast.

The players in brackets are the transfers out. DUH!

How can you make a judgement to if its a good decision or not if you don't know all the facts. I.E who I'm getting rid of.

If I said shall I bring in Fabregas you would all go "oohh yes", ?but at the expense of Malouda? etc...

Wenger fed his players green jellybeans which made his players fast but frail.
Mancini fed his players red jellybeans, which made them agressive
Ferguson fed his players blue jellybeans which made them good, but careless
Ancellotti forgot to feed his players jellybeans.

Based on this, what combination of jellybeans does Pulis feed to his players?

      I don't think he'll be used regularly.

Chamakh has done really well at Arsenal and i think Wenger will use him as much if not more than RVP - Le Prof has pretty much come out and said that he will use RVP sparingly.

Nasri and Fabs are where i'd be looking for arsenal attacking points.

          Based on what?!

He has been injury free for the last 8 Arsenal games, he has started twice, come on 3 times and not featured at all 3 times (2 of which have been in their last 3 games).

Also the fact that Le Prof has come out and said he will be used sparingly.

It's all well and good to claim he will start all day long, but it's not what we've seen, it's not what we've been told. So what makes you so convinced?

No, i wouldn't go near either of them because i think neither will consistently start.

He's not a great fantasy player but Chamakh holds up the ball really well and gets the wide players into the game more, and he is good in the air. It's not as simple as saying RVP is better than him...

    A tale of 2 teams...

My team for GW24 will be (barring injuries, etc):

    Stockdale
    Konchesky - Vidic - G.Johnson
    Nani - Nasri - VDV - Adam - NZog
    Rooney - Tevez
    (Foster, Kolarov, Bardsley, Carroll)

That's 8 players with a double GW (hopefully)

Between then and GW27 my squad will WC magically into something like:

    Foster - Gordon
    Rafael - Boswingwa - Dann - Bardsley - A.N. Other
    Nasri - Fabs - Nani - VDV - Adam
Van Persie - Tevez - Carroll
