Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

I don't understand why everyone is saying Arsenal aren't worth investing in. Yea they got spanked, but keep in mind RvP missed a penalty, 2 goals were scored after Arse had a man down, and Rooney is a set piece maestro. Young had a CLASS game and won't perform like that every game.

Just my mode of thinking. The game could have easily been 4-3.

Not to take anything away from ManU, just my opinion.

shrug, stability starts at the back. you can't really expect rvp, theo etc to bang the goals in when the guys behind them aren't retaining the ball. lack of supply aside, the psychology of the loss has to take a toll.

i currently have theo in my wildcard team, mostly because i think that arsenal HAVE to come back with a bang against swansea, but his position is tenuous, as at 9 points he's easily to up/downgrade.

Did you even watch the match? United could have scored 15.

RVP hasn't hit his stride yet, he looks like he's got early season rustiness. His penalty was crap and telegraphed and he missed an excellent chance at 3-1. His goal was a sitter from point blank. He looked a bit off the pace against Udinese, Liverpool and Newcastle too. He still could and probably will do okay against Swansea and Blackburn, but for 12m it is a risk.

Arsenal in general are risky to invest in. They'll likely have at least 3 new players by the next GW - Park Chu, Santos, possibly Benayoun and a centre back. They're also linked with Elia and Hazard.
Basically with poor form and new untested players it's anyone's guess how Arsenal will play in the next few weeks.

FPL really has gone to sh!t. Fair enough they had a few issues early on with the new site but they're after having the THIRD weekend of football and the site still isn't reliable.
Updating for about 12 hours yesterday. In previous years it'd be an hour at the very most.
But on top of that there's too many minor issues that when added up get quite annoying.

Price rise & falls has turned into a farce. It's a total lottery which days and what times they'll happen.
The visual side of the site still looks rough and unfinished.
Adebayor signed the same day as Mata and still hasn't been added.
There's no Price Rise and Prise Rise Gameweek tabs on the transfer page anymore.
The whole new bonus system is crap. Silva played brilliantly yesterday and received none. Suarez played excellent the day before that and got none. What's the point in lumping on more points to the players that've already gotten them through scoring.. all it does is broaden the divide instead of using the system to reward those who were deserving but happened to get none. The whole index on which they allocate BPs now is rubbish and they'd be better doing away with them altogether = point in case Holt - the lad had a nightmare, wasted 2 golden opportunities yet because he scores when Hilario presents him with an open goal he gets a bonus point. Brilliant.
At least the monkeys with dartboards got it right occasionally last season.

Have to agree with most of that, barring the Holt thing. I was listening to 5 Live's commentary and they had him down as man of the match. So the bonus points went some way to reflecting that.

Playing the price rises was never a part of the game. You had to wait for Crack the code, then Total FPL to come up with an algorithm to predict them. It would appear the FPL don't want us to know when prices will rise and fall, they obviously feel that unpredictability is a part of the game. Fair enough in my book. Assuming they are not using a human to be really random then Frank and/or the Fiso guys may well have to come up with a new algorithm.

played the fixtures and not the form and it cost me dearly
80 points behind current leader who had nani young AND rooney
idiot united supporter but it payed off
I,of course gambled on keeping torres knowing full well that rooney was likely to score
ANYWAY... I knee jerked torres out for rooney (to avoid losing $) but should have done dzeko really
    Here's my team
Thinking about 8 point hit to save wildcard

    Given (ruddy)
    baines(vc) enrique rtaylor clichy bosingwa
    Silva(c) osman zog (moses, dyer)
    Suarez Rooney (graham)

    A. Graham to Dzeko + zog to 6.5 (jarvis/hunt/ohara/?)
    B. zog to young (or use 10 mill somehow)
    C. Clichy to Ward + graham to dzeko

osman, zog ,graham all about to drop and dzeko young ward all about to rise - that's a 0.6 I wont have to spend when the prices finally change

    any advice most humbly welcome

You are almost within sight of w/carding. If that was my team, I'd certainly be w/cing.

Graham, Osman, Zoggers, Dyer plus 2/3 expensive defenders all need to be booted.

The defence needs to be cheapened up and the great news is that there are plenty of handy 4-4.5 millers out there from teams like WOL and SUN.

2 good fixtures and he's been so close to goals and assists its crazy
Bosingwa and enrique are cheap enough keepers with goal threat
I'd be willing to lose clichy for sure (to Ward, say)
Man U haven't got the best run coming up and last week was an abberation that was down to a missed pen and atrocious defending so Young AND Rooney in might be a bit kneejerk
Wish I had done dzeko instead of rooney

Agreed on Baines as the keeper. You can get four 4 millers in, play just 2 and rotate them around pending fixtures.

The thing you need to be thinking about is that your forward line will look something like: Suarez, Jecko and Roonpig

Midpark will include Silva, Young/Mata - how are you going to afford them? You will need these players as they will outscore your defenders.

but do you think ditching bosingwa and enrique is sane considering they are only 5 and 5.5 mil at the mo (that's what I paid anyway)
In the past my midfield has been 3/4 heavy hitters all of whom were my only captain choices and really only one pricey forward one mid range and an over acheiving cheapie

    Still no price changes!!!!

FPL have really cocked up this . Think they should break the rules and when they do update the prices do so by 0.2 if players have had enough transfers in i.e. Dzeko

I agree, had him for two weeks and now it seems everyone else has him to with 440% increase in ownership - luckily I've been rewarded for my foresight with a huge increase in his value... Oh wait, no, I didn't.

What's up with the times this site allocates to posts? They seem to vary from what my pc says. Sometimes they are spot on but at others they have been up to 4 minutes different for o rhyme or reason. Also, some replies are time stamped as being before the original post.

Time is allocated when you hit the reply button. If you are a slow typer/wordsmith then it might appear as "lost in time."

It's not that. Often when I hit the reply button the time will be up to 4 mins different.

        Take a look at this:

True...I know how Katie must have felt last year when she closed her fpl book...

I spend hours looking at my ticker and planning my transfers around price movments etc, and the casual player that pops into fpl/ffs once a week gets away with murder.

We al know how difficult it is to make up even a small margin of 30 points in this game and most allready have am ountain to climb to salvage their seasons.

+1. I have now very unhappy about this. It's taking the skill out of the game, taking away an important facet of managing one's team.

Don't think I really agree with that. It doesn't take any skill whatsoever to glance at a website, see who's on 100% or -100% and make the relevant transfer.

Maybe not a lot of skill but you have to decide whether to do the transfer early or play safe. That was an important factor for me in past years.

THIS. You're not actually SUPPOSED to know when transfers are going to happen. If anything this just makes it more fair- focus on picking which FOOTBALLER is going to do best in the game of FOOTBALL. Get your head out of NTI's, algorithms and stop staying up to 2am to check whether a price has changed or not.

Get a grip people. Join my campaign to put the football back in fantasy football.

Disagree. If price rises weren't a big part of the game the prices wouldn't change (hold on... is that what's happening now?!) It's not about NTI's and all that, it's about taking a gamble on price vs injury or a better prospect popping up at the last min. It's part of the game.

I'm not saying it's not part of the game, obviously it is. I'm saying that knowing exactly when prices would change isn't part of it- or at least wasn't before sites like FISO and TFPL popped up.

Without looking at a site like FISO you can be pretty sure that Dzeko will go up in value after scoring 4 goals at the weekend. You can then make a judgement on whether you want to take the risk or not.

I understand why people are frustrated, but you can't really spit your dummy out about it because you're not MEANT to know when prices will change. It's not the same as them wrongly allocating an assist or the new bonus system being crap, FISO and TFPL don't decide when prices as "supposed" to go up, they guess. If they're wrong, tough luck.

All I'm saying is you achieve nothing by bitching and moaning about it and staying up til 2am to moan some more. Read an article about football. Watch some highlights. Maybe even go outside and kick a ball yourself.

I have to disagree again. FPL wouldn't show you transfers in/out unless they were there to help make a decision when prices were going to change. It has nothing to do with Totalfpl or FISO, although they do make life easier.

They're there so you can have an idea as to whether a player is on the way up or down. The FPL bods never said anything about what the NTIs were, or what time price changes would be, or anything- in fact if you ever asked them, which I have in the past, they'd tell you it was a secret. That's all stuff that's been worked out by FISO.

And maybe they've changed things this year. Or more likely they've ballsed up. Either way, you're no worse off than anyone else playing the game.

But there should be some set of rules that doctate when proce changes happen rather than the somewhat randomness that has krept in. It makes no sense otherwise.

Well then fpl should take away prices and movements in prices.

What makes it worse is the guys that are spending time on their teams(that includes monitoring prices)need to spend even more time now because the can't "trust the system".

I concur. This site has got very boring of late, it seems to be 75% people complaining about a lack of price rises, talking about how much their team is worth, asking "who is most likely to fall, X or Y?"

At least RMT's are vaguely relating to football, the thing we're supposedly all interested in. Remember that, football?

Good Morning Gents and Ladies, I did my 3 transfer already and that's cost me -4 pts hit (thanks to 2 free transfer). My question here is do I need another this week of just wait for next GW? My teams now are:
    Given (Vorm)
Bosingwa, S Taylor, Enrique, Kompany, (De Leart)
    Nani, NZog, Yaya, (Petrov, Moses)
    Rooney c, Dzeko , Suarez v
    A) take one more transfer (-4 pts) Nani out for Young
    B) Do nothing unless inj during int break
    or
    C) wc with Nani + Nzog + Yaya out for Mata + Silva or Nasri + 6.5M
Having a bad season so far , trailing behind leaders in all my mini league by 40 pts + already 🙁

I agree - he looked much betetr than Bent vs Wolves and is involved a lot. He is just a bit shelfish(Nani?)and with his shots being off target he is not in line for any goals or boners at the mo.

And of course he always produces just after I sell him.

Nah, it's fine, it's the new "Standard" team pretty much after the wildcard fest that will be the next two weeks.

it's hard to predict timing.. i might activate my wildcard and draft Anderson + R.Taylor in if the price change time is fixed.

not by FPL, but yes by FISO..

i think FISO has now edged for accuracy.

Osman and VDV were not predicted to fall by FPL.

must admit i have only found the site having 1 update i think it looks slick and modern and all the drop downs ect are nice. i think with them now looking at transfers 3 times a weeks is better because people were just selling and buying because a player was going to go up at midnight now people might keep there players longer and stop chasing last weeks points

What would (roughly) be the most someone could make (team value) from trading every day until GW4 with their wildcard?

    Thanks

There are none at the moment to be honest. Starting to think the best play might be to go for Dyer (4.5) and invest the money elsewhere.
