Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Sigh...punching in for another day worth of questions and answers and suggestions and RMTs...seems a little dull-ish with everything that has been going on site / team-wise...sigh... Hehe...shoot the bastard (me)!

Now that I have that out the way...I seem to be settled on these blokes:
Rooney, Dzeko, Suarez, Mata, Nasri, Bosingwa.

Have these guys as "most likely to remain in my team still: Brunt, Warnock, S Taylor, Brown.

Got these Keepers but may let Ben go:
    Given and Foster

So my question is now...who do you guys suggest I look at if not these guys: O'Hara, Dyer (SWA), Olsson?

I'm not so sure on Dyer but at his price it may not be worth being too worried...however, when it comes time to rely on my bench, will he contribute? O'Hara is playing in a team that is showing some form but it is Wolves (and he is yet to do something). Olsson...Roy just hasn't shown me yet that his team can do the business although they seemed unlucky to concede against Stoke and have had 2 games against Top4 teams.

So what you guys reckon? Olsson could change to De Laet allowing me to upgrade Dyer (or even O'hara)...only have 0.2 in the bank...The problem really is I'm not so sure I know what my options are when looking for players in the price categories that those transfers above would allow me.

Note: I keep saying I should get Ward but that leaves me making no changes to those fringe players and takes away the rotation I have with Warnock and Olsson.

Sorry...this is long...couldn't work out any other way to ask all this...

Remember - if everyone is using their WC to make profit then come the end of the gameweek there will be a lot of selling and thus price falls of those players so you might pick up some cheaper quality at that point... That would work in theory had the FPL site not got its thumb up its ass of course, in reality you'll probably get charged double and end up with another free WC to ruin the game some more.

Everyone on a WC is buying players who had massive points haul last week or consistent scorers for the past few weeks. Why would they sell come end of the week when theres potential for more points and future price rises?

If they're in it just to make the money they'll play the market - if they're in it for the good of the team they'll probably keep them. I've filled my team with price risers (wildcarded obviously) but I'll ship a few out before the gameweek starts to settle on my final squad.

I bought Rooney, Silva and Bosingwa. Before 15m bought also R.Taylor before rising. But sold also Dzeko, despite of I took him yesterday. Think that Manchini will start rotating, so do not want to risk with Dzeko. Also had no Pool cover and decide that Suarez is better pick than having Silva and Dzeko!

I think Dzeko will be safe for a couple of games (for now) one big reason is that Tevez was on his way home for international game and after that game he'll stay at home for a while because he decided that he still miss being with his family. That should give Dzeko another week or two to score more pts that I relly need. 🙂

I still reckon Tevez is more of a rotation threat to Aguero, they're basically the same player - Dzeko is a big target man that they don't really have a good alternative to, unless Balotelli stops being a tosser. As it is Dzeko is young and in form, rotation has become a massive part of the game but in reality players of his age should be able to make every game.

Who will replace Ruudy for a week! I need a GK just for a week and it has to be not more than 4.2, which means 4.0 :). So Ruudy is great but he is suspended. Who will replace... Ruud ??? he is second GK of Norich!

My second GK is Vorm, but he will face Arsenal... surely will take a couple at least. Defo will be on my Bench! Advises?

FPL have ruined the game with these price rises. It's an inflationary policy which is pandering to the IMF and World Bank and can only lead to fiscal instability and quantitative easing, further raising the debt ceiling.

            ok, thanks. here's the team:

            Hilario Vorm
            Baines Warnock Senderos Brown Simpson
            Silva Sessgenon Brunt Jarvis Moses
            Rooney Suarez Dzeko

2.5 in the bank, 1 free transfer.

I'll just post the options again incase:
            A. Sessegnon to Walcott
            B. Senderos to Bosingwa
            C. Baines to Bosingwa, and Sessegnon to Young (plus a 4 point hit and 1.0 in the bank)
            D. Hilario to Schzenzey

              A. will ensure you a cover for Arsenal

Hilario could wait one more week to save the hit of this.

Do not play the wildcard. Your team looks good enough in my opinion.

The only thing I've noticed this year is that it seems alot easier to double rise/drop than last year. Bosingwa has already gone up twice since Saturday, I thought in order for a player to double rise that he had to go over 200% the 2nd time or am I wayyyyy off base.

Does not work that way. First of all you can only go up 0.1 per day/update, second, to go up 0.4 you need over 500 000 transfers in.

        Currently:
Dzeko 'transferred in (round)' = 183,728 up 0.1

        End of international transfer weeks:

          No,
          35 000 = 0.1
          105 000 = 0.2
          245 000 = 0.3

Problem is you can only go up 0.1 per day/update. So even if Dzeko would have gotten 550 000 transfers in before update he would only rise 0.1 and then it would start all over again. Meaning he needs another 105 000 (so 655 000 total) to go up 0.2

missed out on price rise of Ashley Young and Dzeko already. most rivals have Dzeko i'm afraid that low team value will be costly to me in long term!

    with a team of
    Vorm,Given
    Ward, Simpson, Kompany, Bosingwa, Brown
    Yaya, Silva, Brunt, Moses, Dyer
    Rooney, Suarez, RVP

    should i do
A)RVP to Dzeko and Yaya to Ashley Young for a 8 points hit
    B) use WC
    C) do not do anything about it.

Morning boys, I couldn't be bothred playing my wildcard even if I wanted to, and I also really can't be ars*d getting too hung up price changes, life is too short. 2 wildcards in winter, millions of snow and 27 double gameweeks. Same pal, I had spuffed my wildcard far too early last season. A decent run of double gameweeks can get you well over 100 points a time if you have the right players. Slow and steady wins the race. I'm just going to keep up as best I can and go for the big gains later. It's a better plan than wasting wildcard on last weeks points. 8 past Arsenal is over, as is 5 past Spurs. Good as it was (from an FPL point of view) it's not going to happen again.

I think you have a good team, but if you want dzeko I would get rid of Suarez. I still think RVP is a must have with hes fixtures. Maybe do Suarez Yaya out and Dzeko and someone in.

Personally I am not going to get on the Dzeko bandwagon. So What I would do is get rid of Yaya(who is sitting too deep) and moses, get in Jarvis and Taarabt. Or just Yaya out and you could get Arteta.

Right...now that it seems everyone is assuming why people are questioning certain players and bringing in others...can I please get some suggestions regarding these guys without those assumptions:

    Olsson
    O'Hara
    Dyer (SWA)

I have 0.2 in the bank and want to know what people think my options could be regarding other players whilst still playing in the budget bracket...My thoughts so far are:

    Olsson - Da Laet
    Dyer or O'Hara - ???

I could just get in Ward for Olsson and leave the others unless someone has options at the same value to O'Hara or Dyer? What about Biszaky?

I have Warnock...so could drop him for Ward so I still have rotation with Olsson...that would give me 0.7 to upgrade either O'hara or Dyer...but I really can't see alternatives right now and is why I would like some ideas if anyone has got...I may also not want to get rid of Warnock just yet right?

    Thanks

    Hi all,
Is the majority going for WC? I remember from 2 previous seasons that I was using it early but given the extra 2nd WC, I also reckon 2nd international break should be the best time (unless team is complete shambles).
I think I planned it OK so no need for it now (depsite not playing the money game) but "gambled" on Bent->Dzeko (although I'm worried he might not play & Bent is good long term) because I did not have any City cover.

For those who have taken a "hit" to buy in players...where are you seeing how many points you are expecting to have deducted with the next update?

What is your problem...I made transfers and they are not showing up as a points deduction anywhere...so want to know if this is a bug still or if it's in another area...I made them before the crash on Sunday which is why I'm asking...

No need to help me...hovering over the ? gives you the lowdown on things...Silly that it doesn't tell you again when you're prepping for another transfer (in the confirm / cancel transfer section).

I can't see anything apart from when you click on transfer, the FT (free transfers) box above the goal briefly says -1 before changing to 0. Presumably it would show -2 if you had done an 8pt hit.

Hover over the ?...it will tell you how many free you have or if you've had only 1 free and made 2 transfers I see it says -1 then...and the further in that info box it says how many you have made in total...

            You have -1 free transfers
You have made 2 transfers in total

move the curser to "?" next FT on transfer page. it will tell how many non-free trades you have done. each will be -4 points hit.

Hi guys, anyone have any thoughts on how I could improve this? Pretty happy with it..0.2 in the bank:

    Vorm

    Bosingwa, Jose Enrique, Ward
    Anderson, Silva, Adam, Young
    Dzeko, Suarez, Aguero

Subs: Al Habsi, Taylor R, Woodgate, Ferguson

Not much strength in depth. If Woodgate gets injured (likely) then you're down to just one sub as Ferguson will never play. I'd lose Anderson for someone cheaper and use the money to sort out your bench.

Sorry, I'm looking from gw8--> when I will be Wcarding.

From gw 6 Im looking at Cabaye, but he is 6m. When is Arfa(5.5m) back from injury?

Very interesting (and crap!) that it seems prices may hardly ever rise/drop now.

A very strange decision (again) from FPL. It means, once again, forward planning won't be as much of a benefit as it should be 🙁
