Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Another bad thing about the FPL site, is when clicking on a players' 'i', and then clicking 'History', it brings up their stats for past seasons, and then also each game of this season.

However, there is no total bar for this seasons' games, so while it isn't a huge issue at the moment, imagine preparing for GW19, you then look at a prospective transfer, and you want to take a quick peek at what this player has done so far, and you will have to count up 18 weeks of goals and assists to find out their numbers and put them into perspective, when comparing against others.

The stupid thing is that this total bar was there last season, and the seasons before that too! As far as I can see, they have only removed some stuff, and added nothing new!

        Great improvements! 😉

I never thought I’d wildcard and not have Suarez. I thought he’d be 10mill in no time – But his 2point week coincided with Dzeko, Rooney and Torres (honest) going point crazy so he may calm down for a lil while with Stoke and Spurs away on the horizon. He is seemingly fixture proof though – But I can’t ignore RVP at home to Swansea, away to Blackburn and home to Bolton. Getting thumped at OT merely makes me want to get him more – They surely have to bounce back. Having said that, I may play Vorm in goal in case Robin decides to pass it to him from 12yards like he did on Sunday.

Same, really. I transferred in Suarez last week (wildcarding now) and thought he'd be a season keeper, but looking at Rooney, Dzeko & RVP up top now. I really want Suarez too, but can't look past those three at the moment.

    Morning all,
I've just been thinking about my team and looking around this website I have noticed that many people are wildcarding this GW. I am now wondering should I wildcard to keep up with prices or is my team ok. My current squad is:

    Given Vorm
    Bosingwa Kompany Enrique Baines Simpson
    Nani Walters Hoolahan Moses Dyer
    Rooney Bent Suarez

Is there any reason for me to wildcard? I was thinking of just transfering Nani for Young, Silva or Nasri with my free transfer but I'm not sure if I should stick or twist.
Any ideas/advice on changes would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

You'll probably find there's an awful lot less people wildcarding than you think/it appears. Your team is fine, I'd probably just make 1 with that bringing in a Man City player.

      Points > Cash

Plus too much cash-gaining, can then make you feel tied to all the wrong players later on in the season as people get worried about wanting those players back at some point.

It happened with Malouda and Drogba last season, and also later on with Van der Vaart. People were hesitant to sell, despite weeks of bad scores, merely because they were going to 'lose' a few of those precious 0.1's.

Yes, but getting in early on VdV, Adam, Carroll (before transfer) and Nani was key to doing well last year.

It's a balancing act, and you have to play for points - but being priced out of 'must haves' will kill you later on. A 4 point hit now, that ensures you get a player that gets you 20-odd more points over the season is worth it.

The later we get in this game, the less valuable a 4 point hit is.

You should use your free transfer on your midfield but apart from that I think you'll survive. I'm not wildcarding either, mainly because I saved 2 transfers and there wouldn't be any point in doing that now.

All I can say is you need 1 City and 1 Arsenal for next week, if you can manage that even with a 4 point hit you'll be fine.

Andre Santos is going straight into my wildcard team. What do we reckon 5.5-6?

Also, a lot of reports suggesting we've signed Mertasaker. Ugh! I was optimistic we'd get Alex. I would even prefer Cahill to Mertasaker! His lack of pace, plus our high line, not a match made in heaven!

I think Santos will be 6, maybe 6.5. At 6 he will possibly go in my team with his scoring record at 6.5 there's better ways to spend my cash.

Apparently we had a bid for Gotze turned down last night, his agent said he's not going anywhere. Been linked with M'Villa again but Rennes are looking for more money. We've also been linked with Malouda and Benayoun.

If we sign Santos and Mertasker then we btter get a marquee signing for a midfielder.

Yes, the Götze bid happened but was laughed out of court by Borussia Dortmund and the player's agent. Interestingly, it emerged today that Arsenal offered €40 million for him, which is a sign that Wenger is prepared to open his cheque book quite a bit.

Part of the game was balancing the knee jerk price rises with long-term thought.

If you push the game to only making 0.1m changes on Saturdays after the deadline passes, it wouldn't be as much fun.

Yes, its annoying watching players price rise on Wed when you only make your subs on Fridays (to watch for injuries) - just like its annoying bringing in a player early only to watch him get injured in the league cup/international friendly/training accident/joey barton's fist. But balancing those is part of the game.

So I'm guessing there are a crap load of wildcarders out there, and we're all chasing price rises, which will cause said price rises (we'll also likely cause the price drops towards the end of next week).

I would guess that the following form the core of all the teams:

    Vorm
    Bosingwa/RTaylor
    Young/Nasri (or Silva)
    Rooney/Dzeko/Suarez

Clearly then the biggest conundrum we have is - Nasri or Silva.

they're both sicknotes and the international break is coming up, surely at least one of them if not both will get injured. what will you do then?

I know. I’m on a WC so can do so after the international break – Somebody will get injured, its always the way. But if I just had the one or two transfers I wouldn’t be doing it yet, they aren’t due to a rise and RVP will fall if anything – I doubt it, but you don’t know.

Bent to Agbon allows Torres to Rooney with no hits and 2.3 in the bank. I'm not one for the kneejerk but Rooney seems impossible to ignore (again!) Bent was nailed on for me but his sh*te manager is doing his best to f*ck that up and Agbon looks hungry enough to cover my (irrational) need for a Villa player. This leaves cash to upgrade Larsson if he doesn't come good soon. My defence is holding some value in it with Baines.

This seems decent. No attacking City and no Arsenal at all tho. The gambler in me say's Arsenal will come back strong for last week, and I would maybe be foolish to ignore the riches on offer in the city squad (fingers crossed for some rotation here, that would take the shine off it).

Of course, I could forget Abgon and money in the bank and just stick Dzeko in.

    Thoughts?

I'd wait until after the Internationals. People like me who made too many transfers are going to regret it when Rooney strains his groin, Dzeko gets his ankle done in, and Silva is flattened. 2 weeks is a loooooooong time for things to go wrong.

villa will score max 1 goal on average and it will be shared between agbon, bent, n'zog and heskey (!). i really don't see the value in their attack.

If it gives you 2.3 in the bank left over why not just keep Bent? Or if youre that intent on selling why Agbon over Dzeko?

Bent needs to go to free up the difference between Torres and Rooney. I really dont need any Villa attack tho, that much is true. That said, I'm doing rock all till later anyways, Addicted is correct, thay will all break themselves.

Actually, Sinclair has a nice fixture, so I'll bench him one more week (GW4), play him GW5 and then do this:

        Baines>Enrique
Sinclair>9.0 mid, not sure who yet.
