Digest

The Digest- Gameweek Thirteen

The Tottenham juggernaut rolled on relentlessly at the Hawthorns, once again providing Fantasy managers with plenty of attacking options to consider. Newcastle showed their steel at Old Trafford and now have their sights set on Chelsea, ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures…

The Player

For the past few weeks, the vast majority of the Tottenham focus had been on Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale as the midfield duo racked up the Fantasy points. When fit, the Dutchman’s consistency is never in question but Bale’s continually impressive returns presented many Fantasy managers with a quandary- acquiring both players seemed a viable proposition, given the club’s run of fixtures.

Saturday’s win at West Brom brought Emmanuel Adebayor firmly into our thinking once again. The Togo international had drifted off the radar slightly after a six game scoring drought but a brace against Aston Villa last Monday was followed by another double at the Hawthorns- in the space of five days, then, Adebayor bagged as many league goals as Luis Suarez has all season.

Harry Redknapp’s acquisition of both Adebayor and Scott Parker has turned Tottenham into one of the most lethal attacking sides in the Premier League- of the ten games the duo have played, the club have won nine and drawn one. Adebayor has now returned more Fantasy points than both Van der Vaart and Bale and is the sixth top scorer in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with 75 points- priced at 8.8, he still looks a bargain right now.

A closer look at his points sums up his consistency- only twice in those ten appearances has Adebayor failed to either score or assist and with Spurs’ upcoming schedule still looking promising- added to a double gameweek 20- a move for all three of the Tottenham “Holy Trinity” over the next couple of weeks doesn’t seem such a bold move after all.

The Team

While there’s little doubt they led a charmed life at Old Trafford on Saturday, the bottom line is that Newcastle came through unscathed. Many had expected a result similar to the previous week’s trip to the blue half of Manchester but Alan Pardew’s side clung on and remain in the top four.

This week’s home clash with Chelsea should hold little fear for Newcastle; with that 3-1 defeat at City their only loss, a defeat to Andre Villas-Boas’ side would be a far bigger shock that we could have possibly perceived at the beginning of the season. Yohan Cabaye’s guile and steel, Demba Ba’s goals and Gabriel Obertan’s pace and directness have added to the solid foundation and work-ethic already in place and Newcastle look ripe for Fantasy investment once again after what many had expected to be a tricky three-match period.

With Hatem Ben Arfa returning from fitness, a defence that has conceded just 12 goals this season and includes, in the shape of Ryan Taylor, the second-top scoring FPL defender, there are plenty of options available ahead of a run of four games that sees Pardew’s side face (nor, SWA, WBA, bol). Ba, in particular, should see plenty of Fantasy managers acquiring his services for that stretch- similar to Emmanuel Adebayor, he’s proven to be one of the most consistent Fantasy performers this season, scoring or assisting in seven of his previous eight gameweeks and at 6.8 continues to offer outstanding value.

The Talking Point

Yesterday’s off-field events concerning Gary Speed put everything into perspective. At times, football can bring unbridled happiness and fuel the passion of millions around the globe but Speed’s untimely death served a harsh reminder that, essentially, it’s really nothing more than twenty-two men kicking a ball about a patch of grass.

Clean sheets and points accrued have never seemed so insignificant with the news of the Welshman’s heartbreaking passing. Swansea took the decision to play their game against Aston Villa but with many of the protagonists clearly affected, the game itself seemed a secondary matter, dwarfed by the horrifying circumstances that had gone before….

The action moved on to Anfield, where Roberto Mancini adopted a far more conservative approach than many had expected. We can only speculate, but the previous day’s result at Old Trafford may have affected the City manager’s thinking. With a draw at Liverpool enough to preserve a five point advantage over United, Mancini adopted a 4-5-1, with Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko both benched.

Their attacking edge blunted, City were fortunate to escape with a draw; their average shots per away dropped significantly, Sergio Aguero could barely get into the game and in the end, only Joe Hart’s heroics kept their unbeaten record intact. The decision to rein in their attacking tendencies almost backfired yesterday and Fantasy managers will be hoping Mancini banishes such notions with immediate effect.

With 9 goals in his previous ten games, Balotelli was City’s form striker coming into this game and his frustration boiled over when Mancini finally introduced him to the proceeding halfway through the second half. Two yellows in quick succession saw him dismissed- he will now miss the Carling Cup match with Arsenal tomorrow evening.

In a sense, this could even boost Balotelli’s chances of a start against Norwich next weekend; with Dzeko likely to start against the Gunners on Tuesday evening, the Italian will be the fresher of the two come the weekend. City’s crucial Champions League home clash with Bayern Munich next midweek could also play a part in Mancini’s thinking, though- Sergio Aguero seems the likeliest starter of the trio against Paul Lambert’s side and a viable captaincy option, at that.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Aye same. Although I guess it makes no difference to us unless he gets a long term injury at some point so that we are forced to sell, which is actually quite likely knowing VP.

that will happen, that is why RVP is fantasy gold....his price rockets, he gets injured, we sell for a profit (0.5m and counting), his price drops, he gets better, we buy back for less money.

All depends whether MM plays O'Hara in an attacking role. If he plays 4-4-2 at home vs SUN, this is less likely.
I realise that Mick has mentioned getting the most out of O'Hara and the team playing better in a 4-5-1 formation but it's just too much of a risk for me.

The fact that he was 'rested' for a CC match isn't a good thing though.
They played better against Wolves and Swansea then against any others IMO, and well, Lampard started neither.

See...people seem to forget he's been rested for the easier games (except maybe against MUN in 2nd half, when Lamps wasn't in form). Agreed Lamps has lost his pace. But he still has the vision and experience. I'd rather play him as a near striker, we need him for his goals. Else we aren't going to get any. Can't rely on our wingers (Studge/Mata) all the time....good defences will figure us out. Plus he's still lethal on direct FKs/penos/corners. Look at Mata's corners in the second half. I know there are many Chelsea fans wanting a young team with fresh legs, but its not practical YET. AVB knows that. I support his cause 🙂

Mata hit's a very nice DFK and im sure he, or any other Chelsea player, could tuck in a few penalties here and there.
They play much better with Meireles/Romeu/Ramires in the midfield with Sturridge and Torres/Drogba up front and Mata roaming.
Lampard is still a decent player but him in the team affects Chelsea in a poor way.
Also, Swansea isn't an easy game, they put 4 past them without Fatty playing which only Man City have been able to do out of the other top 6 clubs that have played them, with ten men for the majority nonetheless..

Cheers for the reply, FB. Appreciate your commitment to this thread despite your work 🙂

The only thing that stops me from that 8-pt hit is our Cup Draw in GW15 - up against the most difficult opponent in Grp G. Also, Ade & Baines won't necessarily do well in GW15 & might not be worth it. Though, I know they could easily make it up this GW.

Need to get my priorities sorted out, I guess 😛

Putting all my eggs into Spurs basket! They'll win or lose it for me in the cups! My mini-leagues are going well though so I don't mind 🙂

You do need to get your priorities sorted out! The cups are cool, but I care much more about overall rank and bragging rights over my friends IRL 😀

And of course bragging rights on here haha, my past 2 finishes don't exactly give me a lot of credit, only thing that saves me is my current rank at the moment!

Sweet rank, considering you dropped this GW. 🙂

Yea I played too much for the Cup these 2 past GWs, bringing in Lamps & Helguson solely for GW13 & back-fired.

It'd be a sure loss in the Cup for me if I do the 8-pt hit.

Decisions....hmm. Could you convince me why I should retain my WC for later? Injuries, DGWs, etc? First-timer...so not sure.

Might be a little late to really utilise your WC to it's fullest as you have one available from GW21...plus you have some key players with good fixtures in your team! There're usually a fair few more GWs as well, it's weird getting this far without one for me! Trust me, the longer you hang on to it, the better you'll feel. You really don't need to use yours imo, you'd only be changing about 4/5 players, 3 of which you can change with a simple 8 pointer! 😉

Not an expert but Moyes has a habit of geeing up players low in confidence with positive comments in the press at a time when he needs them to perform i.e. when he has no other alternative but to play them! Bily has played some LW in the past but it must be said never that successfully - he's scored the odd cracker but mostly has suffered from inconsistency in his week to week even half to half performances.

As a Drenthe owner I'm deciding to jump ship based on Moyes' comments as I'd expect him to be out another week at least and with squad rotations like last week it's best not to carry any passengers. It's not like you won't be able to afford to bring Drenthe back in at a later stage - his price has never changed...

For this weekend only I'd fancy a punt on Kieran Richardson but more than likely will go with one of the West Brom boys. They have far better future fixtures and could be a long-term keeper. Like you though I will be waiting for more team news before I do it as zero chance of price rises/drops effecting my choice

    Morning Gents,

So sadly the Bendtner punt didn't pay off (who'd have thought?) so I'm using my two frees to ship the useless wassock to bring in Adebayor.

I need to fund this using my second free transfer to find the additional 1.0m (1.1m if I wait untill tomorrow). I'm thinking either Walters or Ramsay out for Ben Arfa. I'd bench him this week but he'd come in for Newcastle's decent run GW 15-18 (nor, SWA, WBA, bol).

    Sound like a decent move?

All good suggestions Doors, ta. I'd hope Ramsay (unless I get rid) and Sinclair give me enough Arsenal and Swansea coverage for the time being. As for Pilk, as much as I love the guy, his fixtures just aren't as sexy. 🙂

I've considered I won't lie. But he's still there and has been looking pretty good despite not actually scoring - he could have scored a couple against City. Also Pool are on the cusp of a QPR, avl, wig, BLA run which at this point, having held on so long, seems just be a bit silly to get rid.

Looking at the midfielder stats in FFS members area, Jamie O'Hara seems a potential bargain - nearing the top of most of the attacking stats. Having stuck with M Petrov for weeks I'm thinking of swapping them.

Thanks. I've gone for it. For the home games at least, he seems a good bet.

My concern with the stats is that they often confuse the truth.

Suarez's stats for example place him consistently towards the top of the forwards league. . . although with some easier fixtures approaching I'm going to transfer him in after the weekend for the differential within my mini-league. He has to start scoring soon and his all round play is good.

Any thoughts on him as a mid-price option? Good fixtures coming up but they are mainly away from home - can't remember if he's the kind of player who does a lot better at home or not. Set-pieces and Shlong/Odem returning could be good news for him from an assists perspective. Debating between him and O'Hara at the moment.

Stoke have pretty much qualified already, so reckon Pulis will rest a few given how dire they've been after coming back the last few times. Also, STO looked much better at the w/e - perhaps on the up with Huth back at CB...

Simpson at home is a good shout, but Chelsea do score goals, and I can't see them blanking at SJP...

    Which two transfers to make-

    VDV in for Nani
    O'Hara in for Eagles

My team is struggling abit and i am getting behind for 2 reasons. 1) I chose VDV over Bale or Ade for Spurs cover and 2) I have Nani.

My team link should work if anyone could drop me any tips. With Utds form and the fact i have kept him so long i am tempted to stick with Nani for the time being?!

I have the funds to do Gabby to Ade which would leave Jones to 4.3mil defender (considering Fabio as if he doesnt play i can use bench and if he does play then great!)

Well i am 4th in my league, Number 1 has bale in his team, It is prob better if i had lennon in there to cancel out his bale! im not gona make up ground with same team!

McAuley and west brom have two away games in the next three and i can't see any clean sheets from them!

Jagielka is renowned for scoring and cleansheets are looking good for everton!

Infact the main question is Lennon a guaranteed starter

      Jagielka a renowned goal scorer?
He has scored 4 goals in the last 5 seasons.
You are hardly going to make up ground picking Lennon over Bale, but do what you want to do.

And cleansheets are hardly looking good for Everton, they have kept 2.
        Neither of which at home.

Or, Jagielka has scored 2 this season. And Everton have conceded 1 goal in their last 2 (an unfortunate penalty)

jag renowned for scoring? don't look at others teams when choosing your own, you will end up with a weaker team because of it

Yeah he scores now and again, some defenders never score, He;'s about 4 a season which is enough to have him in the squad!!!

I wouldn't go getting Lennon if I were you, especially just to be different from his team. There's loads of time left, we're only just past 1/3 of the season.

It's only gameweek 14. Pick the team that you think will score the mostg points regardless of what players your opponents have.

He's hardly crap! If i had money i would of course have bale

This is not a criticism page is it? Just a simple question, if your gona slag off lennon for his price then back it up with atleast a good alternative

          Simple really

Listen, if your not able to link your team then don't expect advice.

If your team was linked I could have clicked on it had a look and even looked at your rival's team to help.

I have no idea what your team value is and where your money is tied up. If you can't afford the better player(Bale) and want to settle for Lennon then that's your problem. Lennon actually needs to score the same(idealy more) to cancel out your rival's Bale. And he won't.

Fancy a quick RMT for gw14?

    De Gea (Vorm)
Kompany, Vermaelen, Jones, Jose Enrique (Taylor R)
    Brunt, Bale, Silva (Eagles, Ferguson)
    Adebayor, RVP, Sturridge

2.0mill in the bank. I'm looking at getting Mata in for Chelsea's run of easier games over Christmas, maybe Ben Arfa too. Jose Enrique has been lackluster as of late.

Defence is much too expensive, downgrade 2 out of De Gea, Kompany, Verm, Jones or Enrique. And then upgrade Ferguson
