Digest

The Digest- Gameweek Thirteen

The Tottenham juggernaut rolled on relentlessly at the Hawthorns, once again providing Fantasy managers with plenty of attacking options to consider. Newcastle showed their steel at Old Trafford and now have their sights set on Chelsea, ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures…

The Player

For the past few weeks, the vast majority of the Tottenham focus had been on Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale as the midfield duo racked up the Fantasy points. When fit, the Dutchman’s consistency is never in question but Bale’s continually impressive returns presented many Fantasy managers with a quandary- acquiring both players seemed a viable proposition, given the club’s run of fixtures.

Saturday’s win at West Brom brought Emmanuel Adebayor firmly into our thinking once again. The Togo international had drifted off the radar slightly after a six game scoring drought but a brace against Aston Villa last Monday was followed by another double at the Hawthorns- in the space of five days, then, Adebayor bagged as many league goals as Luis Suarez has all season.

Harry Redknapp’s acquisition of both Adebayor and Scott Parker has turned Tottenham into one of the most lethal attacking sides in the Premier League- of the ten games the duo have played, the club have won nine and drawn one. Adebayor has now returned more Fantasy points than both Van der Vaart and Bale and is the sixth top scorer in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with 75 points- priced at 8.8, he still looks a bargain right now.

A closer look at his points sums up his consistency- only twice in those ten appearances has Adebayor failed to either score or assist and with Spurs’ upcoming schedule still looking promising- added to a double gameweek 20- a move for all three of the Tottenham “Holy Trinity” over the next couple of weeks doesn’t seem such a bold move after all.

The Team

While there’s little doubt they led a charmed life at Old Trafford on Saturday, the bottom line is that Newcastle came through unscathed. Many had expected a result similar to the previous week’s trip to the blue half of Manchester but Alan Pardew’s side clung on and remain in the top four.

This week’s home clash with Chelsea should hold little fear for Newcastle; with that 3-1 defeat at City their only loss, a defeat to Andre Villas-Boas’ side would be a far bigger shock that we could have possibly perceived at the beginning of the season. Yohan Cabaye’s guile and steel, Demba Ba’s goals and Gabriel Obertan’s pace and directness have added to the solid foundation and work-ethic already in place and Newcastle look ripe for Fantasy investment once again after what many had expected to be a tricky three-match period.

With Hatem Ben Arfa returning from fitness, a defence that has conceded just 12 goals this season and includes, in the shape of Ryan Taylor, the second-top scoring FPL defender, there are plenty of options available ahead of a run of four games that sees Pardew’s side face (nor, SWA, WBA, bol). Ba, in particular, should see plenty of Fantasy managers acquiring his services for that stretch- similar to Emmanuel Adebayor, he’s proven to be one of the most consistent Fantasy performers this season, scoring or assisting in seven of his previous eight gameweeks and at 6.8 continues to offer outstanding value.

The Talking Point

Yesterday’s off-field events concerning Gary Speed put everything into perspective. At times, football can bring unbridled happiness and fuel the passion of millions around the globe but Speed’s untimely death served a harsh reminder that, essentially, it’s really nothing more than twenty-two men kicking a ball about a patch of grass.

Clean sheets and points accrued have never seemed so insignificant with the news of the Welshman’s heartbreaking passing. Swansea took the decision to play their game against Aston Villa but with many of the protagonists clearly affected, the game itself seemed a secondary matter, dwarfed by the horrifying circumstances that had gone before….

The action moved on to Anfield, where Roberto Mancini adopted a far more conservative approach than many had expected. We can only speculate, but the previous day’s result at Old Trafford may have affected the City manager’s thinking. With a draw at Liverpool enough to preserve a five point advantage over United, Mancini adopted a 4-5-1, with Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko both benched.

Their attacking edge blunted, City were fortunate to escape with a draw; their average shots per away dropped significantly, Sergio Aguero could barely get into the game and in the end, only Joe Hart’s heroics kept their unbeaten record intact. The decision to rein in their attacking tendencies almost backfired yesterday and Fantasy managers will be hoping Mancini banishes such notions with immediate effect.

With 9 goals in his previous ten games, Balotelli was City’s form striker coming into this game and his frustration boiled over when Mancini finally introduced him to the proceeding halfway through the second half. Two yellows in quick succession saw him dismissed- he will now miss the Carling Cup match with Arsenal tomorrow evening.

In a sense, this could even boost Balotelli’s chances of a start against Norwich next weekend; with Dzeko likely to start against the Gunners on Tuesday evening, the Italian will be the fresher of the two come the weekend. City’s crucial Champions League home clash with Bayern Munich next midweek could also play a part in Mancini’s thinking, though- Sergio Aguero seems the likeliest starter of the trio against Paul Lambert’s side and a viable captaincy option, at that.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

A question folks, will be ejecting 4 non active teams in my mini league, to be replaced by active players.Does that result in a number of teams in the overall standings getting green arrows. Also what becomes of their players?

Same can be said for suarez though even though it's unfortunate you can't bring the pea in, i can see suarez making me regret gettign rid, even though it was for adebayor last week, he should do well with upcoming fixtures, not much difference between him and chico i reckon with next few games, time will tell 🙂

You can have him, i've told people all season I rocked him last year but he doesn't set up well in Man U's current philosophy. He's a poacher or some might say camper (CoD term), SAF knows when Welbeck and midfielders are all healthy he won't have room for the smallest heatmap footprint ever. Has he ever made or even taken a shot from more than 12 meters out? Has he ever beat a defender in front of him straight up; by either a skill move or using that blazing speed to push a ball into space around a defender?

He's all take, and no give I credit his unrelenting work ethic for getting him this far...but for his price this year, and the leagues natural adjustment to one-dimensional strikers, you guys are wasting a lot of bread.

With Defoe coming in and doing the business, there is a big risk VDV will be benched even if fit? And even when he does start now he is going to get subbed on the hour mark regularly. I think it is time to bin him. Bale plays every minute but I am still not convinced yet on his consistency. Feel we may have just missed his latest streak of points.

I'd say so, Spurs fixtures are pretty solid right into January (plus there's a DGW coming up).

He's like Suarez in his scattergun approach, except his shots are much more on-target. He had a huge PPI on the weekend, which you almost never see with Suarez... all about shots on-target.

Your team looks good Stevvi 😉 . Take care of the points, and the money will take care of itself. Or is it the other way round 😕

I don't even remember how much my team value was at this stage last season, so don't know whether it's exceedingly high or just average.

Thank you. I have attempted to take care of both up till now. I am now concentrating fully on points (and thus the cash must surely come?). I do not mind seeing a drop in price here or there to keep what I see as quality.

I reckon we're upper average which is encouraging 🙂

    In answer to your question:
That is a very valid point HVT!

I own quite a few meh players. Sinclair and sess prime examples.

I was planning on upgrading one of em to Bale, but can’t.

    Ben Arfa is very tempting.

However he’s really flourished with Best gone.
And he hasn’t even played a full game yet…
so to conclude…I may go for Larsson

Very consistent and great fixtures 🙂
In fact I may do that now....

Paddy has proved to be one of the most important players, can't understand why he doesn't get in Irish squad but I suppose Westwood is good cover for Given.

Taarbat surely will be gone in January, the fact he wasn't even on bench Saturday suggests he has played his last game for the club which is a pity. I've lost 0.6 on him too!

I wouldn't do Bale despite his form. Take a look at his last seasnon's stats. OK, that was then and this is now but he was hardly much better than above average.

Ade is more difficult. I have him and still think he's a bit of a bargain at this price... but I havve him.

Where are your other urgent changes though?

Keepers - If you're playing Vorm every week you're fine

Defence - You've got a fair amount of money here, but New, Mcy, swa, mun are some of the best defences in the league so far and walker will get a mix of cleanies and attacking points, no real problems here as long as you trust that Jones will be back in united's starting lineup

Mid - Silva/VDV + 3 mid-low price is standard, though you could think about bringing Bale in

Strikers - RVP and Sturridge are good picks, even Helguson is very good value, but with the 5.1 in the bank you'll want to upgrade either a mid or a striker.

Your sensible choices come down to bringing Bale/Mata in for Sinclair/Sess/Eagles or bringing Ade in for Helguson or Sturridge.

Was going to ask about what others are doing with Rooney as well. I got rid of Bendtner yesterday for Ade giving me RVP and Rooney upfront. Still think Rooney has it in him.

Have Bale and Ade in there now. VDV booted.

Highly likely to rise again-on 65% already on Fiso.

    Al-Habsi (Ruddy)
    Brown - Enrique - Wilkinson - Raylor - Simpson
    VDV - Silva - Walters - Drenthe - Henry
    Aguero - RVP - Bendtner

    2.3m in the bank.

Really stuck on what transfers to make. Sunderland are playing Wolves and Bruce is on the verge of the sack so it's a must win and you'd think that Bendtner would finally get a goal. He'll go out next week regardless though.

At the moment I'm thinking maybe Drenthe > Allen

    Thoughts?

RVP still the front runner I imagine but less clear cut this week as VdV, Ade, Aguero and Silva are all strong contenders with Rooney, Dzeko, Bale, Balo and Baines all possible differential captains.

Can't decide between RVP or Adebayor. Will wait till Friday after the arsenal press conference

I think if I had Aguero I'd captain him but I don't. I think I'll go for RVP if the news is positive and Arsene seems optimistic and Ade if 'Arry says Defoe is playing.
