The Numbers Game – Opportunity Knocks

Fantasy managers are always looking out for any indicators of a player’s future success. Some, like increased game time or a team’s new attacking philosophy make total sense. Others such as a player’s performance in a single Gameweek or past success against any given opponent are a bit of a stretch. The final category is filled with hunches, feelings and long shots, often fuelled by adult beverages, and usually leading to ill-advised Friday night transfer binges.

One way of predicting goals is to look at the amount of opportunities a player is receiving, and what he’s doing with them. For anyone who has even casually glanced at a game of football (never mind hardened Fantasy managers like yourself), that sounds obvious but it’s a factor which is consistently ignored in favour of ‘form’ and the fact a player had a ‘big’ game the previous week, even if his lone goal came about somewhat fortuitously.

Taking last year‘s data (for forwards only), we see a correlation of around 88% when comparing total shots to goals scored (excluding penalties) and 90% when comparing only shots on target. This can be used as a predictive tool as players who are getting chances, but not putting them away will, on average, start to improve over time assuming they continue to receive the same opportunities in the future.

There are two careful, and important, distinctions to be made though.

sess | dempsey | ben arfa | silva | bale

I like. if you dropped Rooney, upgraded Ben Arfa to Nani, could you get a decent cheapie forward in? Think you'd be a few points short of Studge, unless there's anything in the bank?

Valencia in for Nani. Use freed cash to upgrade defense to a liverpool player for 3 gameweeks, or Soerensen to Reina, then rethink strategy. 🙂

Lol, so does Nani. And Sturridge is so greedy that he'll be sneaking into the middle for shots. And if (when) Torres wets the bed studge will move inside. But if anything, that would hurt his value to me. He's been incredibly productive from the wing.

Evans and Lindegaard a bit of overkill for my wildcard team?

Two Man U defenders for 9m just seems an awesome bargain.

My only concern really is that it prevents me from having two of their attackers, which I will presumably want at some point.

    ok folks pick 1 team

    Team a

    Sorensen/Schwarzer

    Senderos Cahill/ShawX BAE, McAuley, Santon

    Bale, Dempsey, Gerrard, Valencia, McLean

    RvP, Aguero, Sturridge

    Team b

    Sorensen, Schwarzer

    Senderos. BAE, Richards, Santon, Kos

    Bale, Nani, Sess, Dempsey, McLean

    Aguero, RvP, Sturridge

Team B seems safer and more balanced, team A is more risky, but has the potential to be much more explosive.

My wc plan was always Team B, Team A started out as me just messing around and morphed.

Yup, it's poor defensively. You know why? Because you've looked at price, it seems, not fixture and the team's playing style + rotation possibilities.

Overall, five cheap defenders who are rotatable should outscore 2 expensive ones with the points you earn elsewhere in the team. This is statistically proven, and with all the good teams more or less clashing together, this seems like a good time to do it.

Okay, you have Shawcross. 5.1 mil. Why not Shotton, 4.0 mil, a little insecure yes, but most likely playing, and playing OOP. Playing him at homegames, where Stoke have ridiculously easy fixtures up to GW 27, does not seem like the baddest choice. Get your money's worth there!

Senderos is good, no reason to complain there! Great fixtures, on the team with 3 most cleansheets and rising form.

McAuley - if I'd do 5 cheap defenders, I'd have him on my team. Beyond QPR, they have the best fixtures. But, since IMO you should have one good defenders on a top 4 defense side, I recommend instead ... Skrtl from Liverpool for three fixtures, before you swap Skrtl for City defense.

So, what to do about BAE? Keep for this gameweek, then toss for McAuley or Caulker (though they don't have good, away or home, for another 6-7 gameweeks). Use Santon, Shotton, McAuley and Senderos to rotate (they rotate very well) with Skrtl / Richards (Kompany)

It's not more balanced. It's way too expensive on the defense.

      A.

If I could, I'd do Rooney over Aguero for next gameweek - or, if you are brave, Wellbeck. Aguero away, and with a rearranged midfield if Silva doesn't play ... is much to pay 11 mil for that, even though he's a great player.

I think it all depends on how the games themselves go. Ramires is at his best, and by far his most opportunities, against tiring sides when we're winning and the opposition has to commit men forward. He's an absolute animal on the counter attack.

He's not very technically gifted, so when teams sit deeper and get as many men behind the ball - as I fully expect Sunderland to do tomorrow - he doesn't often have the quality to break them down himself, instead we're looking at the likes of Mata to create.

I see a tight game tomorrow, doubt we'll put many past Sunderland, so not too optimistic about his chances to be honest - and I have him myself. Although I do like the following game at Norwich, who concede a lot, for him, and then we have Swansea, who he scored twice against earlier in the season.

Although I will say that, judging by his second goal against Pompey, he's been working on his finishing - and rightly so. He's wasted a fair few one-on-ones this season, so if he can continue to put them away like he did last weekend, then his FPL returns should increase significantly.

Also don't think he plays as well when Lampard is on the pitch, because it forced him to do extra work. Think Lampard will probably get the nod over Meireles tomorrow.

Cripes and crisis; Silva’s recovery has put a spanner in the works.  This is another that could divide opinion. Need your help chaps:

    A)    Schwarzer, Valencia, Sessegnon
    B)    Linde/Kenny/Sorensen/4.5, Silva, McLean

I love/hate the agony of an FPL conundrum!

Schwarzer and Vorm is the best rotation for the season I think, hence why I'm willing to ride his injury out. With no WC left, I'm saving a GK transfer in the future.

    Wildcard team.

    Lindergaard

    Richards, Dawson, Evans, Simpson

    Gerrard, Bale, Ben Arfa

    Van Persie c Rooney, Yakubu

    Vorm, Dempsey, Sessengon and Caulker.

Strength in depth for any real life shocking rotation.

Definately mate, Swansea have impressed me this year, they keep the ball so won't concede many, I've doubled up all season and they've not let me down yet.

Fixtures are tricky but at home they are a match for anyone, dreading Sunday as I think they will give Arsenal a good game.

Thanks, I'm 50 points off my money league leader so want a good wc week to cut the gap, reckon this team is good for 3 weeks and going for a strong bench as real managers have been a pain with random rotation this year.

Question galore: Valencia likely to play offensive winger again this GW?

Who do you think will score most of Rooney and Welbeck (I assume he'll be starting alongside?)? At least history says they are pretty even at FLP scores when playing together.

    What is Silva's status?
