The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Robin Red Faced

“He is an exceptional player and when you feed him in the box, he’s deadly.”

You see, we kind of knew all that. We realised that, against Blackburn, particularly a Blackburn reduced to ten men after half an hour, Van Persie had the tools to destroy them and deliver massive returns. The problem Mr Wenger, is that on Friday afternoon you uttered this…

“I will rotate a little bit because many players have given a lot…[With Van Persie] the temptation is there.”

That was news to us Fantasy managers. That put the frighteners on and, despite our attempt this morning to deconstruct that statement and put up arguments against the idea of resting Van Persie, some took action. Indeed, two of the top four ranked Fantasy Premier League managers opted to give the armband to Sergio Aguero – perhaps oblivious to Wenger’s threats, but more likely as a result of them.

The very idea of us, a site dedicated to passing information to Fantasy Football managers, ignoring the quotes from Wenger was never a viable option. We turned a blind eye to Friday’s Sun report, but when Wenger speaks, we had to report it. So, to counter that, in this morning’s Preamble, we stressed the need to keep faith with Van Persie and hope that Wenger resisted the gamble. Hopefully, that helped some in their decision to sit tight.

Is there a lesson to be learned? Certainly the fact that Van Persie remained on the pitch to provide an assist to Thierry Henry with the score at 6-1, indicates that the idea of resting Van Persie didn’t cross Wenger’s mind once the goals started flowing. Had Van Persie been tiring, had he been desperate for a break – why was he left on the pitch when the match was dead and buried?

Only Wenger has the answers, and it seems we’ll never quite work out his thinking when it comes to Van Persie. With the Champions League programme looming, we can surely expect more uncertainly, perhaps some smokescreens.

However, today surely confirmed that we can ill afford to take risks with Van Persie and the armband. There is no better Fantasy damage dealer and if there’s a chance that he will be on the pitch, particularly against abject opposition, we have to back him. That policy may cost us – there may well be occasions when Van Persie will be left fidgeting on the bench whilst sporting our armbands. The question is, will those who suffer that fate feel any worse that those who missed out on today’s incredible haul? Right now, in this Knee Jerk, it seems unlikely.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The biggest annoyance of this weekend (for all the good people of fantasy football scout) is surely my decision to choose Moses over Sigurdsson at the last minute. Oh, and for Kompany to not play. So annoying. Oh, well...At least I (c) ol' Robin Reliant!

Moses always takes the wrong option, we've had half a season of it and it's still occurring.

I can't believe Mark got him back in his WC, with so many other options, actually I can, he's so stubborn.

I think it was a dive but a very good one. Being the hypocrite I am I'm more angered by bad dives than good ones.

This one would have been given 10 times out of 10 the way he handled it but it was as clear a dive as any for me. He tried to dive for another one too shortly after actually but the ball had gone out already.

          Yes.

I'm reluctantly accepting it and I'm also reluctantly accepting the Spanish way of cheating described by McGurn below. I think the game would be better off without them both but I've accepted that it's likely that a large proportion of players will use any means to win a football match when so much is at stake and the referee can't control it all.

No, I think its smart play by the winger. You can hate on him all you want but ultimately he won an important pen early on to give his side a 1-0 lead. It wasnt a dive, it was more knowing where the defender was, making sure he made contact, and selling it to the ref.

No, i definately do not approve of deceiving the referee, but I just think it was a heads up play by jonhson, he knew he was going to lose the ball, so positioned himself in a way he could receive a penalty.

The slide on silva however, by etuhu has definately a penalty. I think the ref was reluctant in calling it because of city's lead in the game.

Heads up play: Johnson knew he was going to lose the ball, so put himself in a position where the defender still clipped him, so not 100% dive, replays show there WAS contact, just over exaggeration at the fact.

Deceiving the ref: Johnson didn't make a fool of himself(until his dive on the baseline) whilst winning the penalty, like i said, there was contact and it could have gone either was imo.

We have to remember the ref has a split second to decide if its a penalty or not, and in that instance, we can judge basing it on replay after replay, but in that moment, maybe the ref saw it deifferently. Catch my drift?

I understand your point 100% and maybe i'm just old skool and should move with the times, just dont like it. Also, absolutely no blame to the ref in such events as in real time they look like fouls, its the players who are at fault.

I really hope Valencia comes good tomorrow, I mainly brought him in because of Terry/Cole being out. It's hard to call the Chelsea ManU game. It could go either way but surely ManU will score. I personally hope they slaughter Chelsea. I'm not looking forward to the rotation with Nani and Young back, I think Valencia's impact will diminish with being dropped and less important to the attack. Or do you think Fergie has more faith in him than that?

      1) Yes

      2) Back next game, was precautionary

      3) There were midweek games, I suspect it was just a rest. He's been their best striker.

      1) No. FA are being really strict, and would see that as a reckless tackle.
      2) back next week according to reports
      3) Gave Jackson a run out, i expect holt and morison to be the starting 2 in future games though

Cheers. I'm a bit cheesed off at the moment, seeing that I had only just transferred Huth in. In how many days will his hearing be, and is his price likely to drop before then? He's currently at 6%/10% on FISO and TotalFPL respectively. If yes, any suggestions for his replacement? Currently have Kompany, Simpson, Kelly and Evans.

      Have all 3 players...

      1) Wouldn't be surprised to see the ban increased to 4 for 'frivolous appeal' or whatever it's called. Probably won't get rescinded after several previous challenges (Milijas, Kompany etc) - thought it was a yellow max myself.

      2) I think he should be back for the Villa game?

      3) No idea. Holt and Jackson did well and as I had Surman before my WC and brought in Morison instead, i've angrily knee-jerked him out to Zamora.

No idea on 2 and 3, but for 1 I actually think Huth will win his appeal. The tackle was overly forceful but it was not two footed, studs were not up and it barely connected.

If we compare it to the recent cases of Kompany and Milijas, this tackle is much more harmless and unlikely to injure someone.

AVB has been spotted directing ice trucks around stamford bridge - tipping loads on roads and walk ways!!!

Fans safety will be paramount and the game be off - AVB be gutted after week of planning without Cole, Terry, Drogba, & Ramires.

TBH they looked good, the 3 match ban is a bugger. They have had so many changes its understandable. One thing in their favour is they have alot of fresh players, which could make the difference, and a better bench. What about you.

Ya I agree, main plus I think was Taarbat. He was outstanding today, thinking we might play him further forward with Bobby and put Traore LM. I was never so pissed off with a QPR player before then i was at Cisse today, can't understand what he was thinking grabbing him by the neck.

Definitely 6 points dropped from Wolves and Norwich. I reckon Blackburn and Wigan are doomed leaving it between us, Bolton and Wolves for last relegation spot. Certainly going to be a dogfight but i think we can do it!

Right do people think its worth a 4 point hit to do

    Huth to Caulker
    Walters to Dempsey

Think this my last chance to be able to get dempsey in for his three easy games , is it worth a hit?
Or would i do better to keep both and wait for Huth decision (would mean losing money on Walters)
