Scout Notes- FA Cup Fifth Round- Saturday

Ryo Miyaichi catches the eye in his first start for Bolton. Daniel Sturridge saves Chelsea’s blushes at the Bridge, Royston Drenthe inspires Everton to a comfortable win over Blackpool, while the defensive woes pile up for Arsene Wenger as the Gunners are sent packing at Sunderland:

Ryo Miyaichi
Subject of our Gameweek 25 Spot the Differential article, Bolton’s on-loan midfielder vindicated out recent praise with a goal in his first start. Miyaichi impressed coming off the bench last weekend against Wigan and was rewarded with a place in the Trotters’ first XI at Millwall yesterday, as Owen Coyle rang the changes after an insipid defeat at the hands of the Latics. The youngster wasted little time in endearing himself to the travelling support, outpacing the home defence before slotting home a composed finish with just over three minutes on the clock. Priced at 4.9, he could offer a decent cut-price midfield option if he can nail down that left wing role, though with trips to Chelsea and City up next, many will be reluctant to invest in Bolton options right now.

Tuncay
He’s been nothing more than a peripheral figure for the Trotters this term but the on loan Wolfsburg man was afforded a rare start by Coyle yesterday. The Bolton boss dropped both Martin Petrov and Chris Eagles for the Millwall game and Tuncay made his mark, setting up David N’Gog for his side’s second in the 2-0 win. Coyle also drafted in Tim Ream (priced at 4.0 in FPL) for his debut, with the US international partnering David Wheater in central defence; Zat Knight dropped down to the bench, as the visitors chalked up a rare clean sheet.

Daniel Sturridge
The forward came to the rescue for Chelsea, grabbing the equaliser against Birmingham to force a replay at St Andrews on Tuesday March 6. Sturridge has been woefully off-form over the last couple of months, having failed to score since Gameweek 17 but, with Bolton, West Brom and Stoke up next for the London outfit, has perhaps found himself back on Fantasy radars on the back of yesterday’s goal. Andre Villas-Boas’ side were poor once again, though; booed off the pitch at full-time, their performance will be a worry for any Fantasy owners, with those managers who are currently considering a punt possibly thinking twice now.

Juan Mata
With Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba starting from the bench, Mata was the automatic choice when his side were awarded a first half spot-kick. He fluffed his lines, however, as Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle dived low to his right to turn the Spaniard’s effort onto the post. It’s perhaps unlikely Mata would have been handed the penalty if either Lampard or Drogba were on the pitch, though yesterday’s miss will hardly have helped his chances in staying ahead of the pair in the pecking order.

Royston Drenthe
It seems the arrival of Steven Pienaar has spurred the Dutchman back into life. With Pienaar cup-tied for yesterday’s game against Blackpool, Drenthe was afforded a chance on the Everton left by David Moyes and was quick off the mark, netting inside 60 seconds to give the Merseysiders an early advantage. Drenthe soon followed this up with a corner-kick assist for Denis Stracqualursi five minutes later, as the home side took command at Goodison. Given the recent performances of Pienaar, however, it still seems that Drenthe will be consigned to a bench role when Everton return to league duties in Gameweek 27, with the latter’s defensive work and understanding with Leighton Baines on the flank looking likely to see him given the nod.

Denis Stracqualursi
The Argentine is starting to acclimatise to the demands of the English game after a slow beginning to his loan spell at Goodison. Stracqualursi had made a single start in the first 22 Gameweeks of the season, with eight brief sub appearances also thrown in, but has featured in the first XI for the last three league now, grabbing a goal in last week’s win over Chelsea. He netted again yesterday, prodding home from a corner, and with big-money signing Nikica Jelavic still sidelined with a stomach problem, is making a strong case for further first-team contention. Everton have a blank Gameweek, followed by a (qpr, TOT, ARS) but, as their recent victories –and clean sheets- against City and Chelsea have suggested, Moyes’ side are starting to pick up pace in the second half of the season once again.

Wes Hoolahan
With Grant Holt afforded the day off by Paul Lambert, Steve Morison partnered Simeon Jackson up top for the Canaries. Wes Hoolahan grabbed the spot-kick duties in Holt’s absence, netting from the rebound after Kasper Schmeichel had saved his initial effort. Given they haven’t been beaten at home since Gameweek 12, yesterday’s 2-1 Carrow Road defeat at the hands of Leicester proved a huge surprise for Norwich, though- up next they play host to the champions, as United roll up in Gameweek 26.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Despite having excelled in his brief stint on the left flank in Gervinho’s recent African Cup of Nations absence, many had expected the youngster to drop to the bench upon the Ivorian’s return. Gervinho did, indeed, come straight back into the first XI but Arsene Wenger shifted Oxlade-Chamberlain over to the right instead, with a below-par Theo Walcott dropping to the bench. Oxlade-Chamberlain managed the full 90 minutes – though this was perhaps down to injuries to others forcing Wenger’s hand -and it’s clear that the Arsenal boss views him as a serious alternative to Walcott. With an FPL price difference of 6.0 compared to Walcott’s 8.8, the mid-price appeal of Oxlade-Chamberlain is obvious. A late own goal somewhat dampened his day but his performance was far from the worst in a dire Gunners display.

Arsenal Defensive Woes
This week saw Per Mertesacker sidelined with a long-term ankle injury, while Laurent Koscielny limped out of Wednesday’s 4-0 hammering in Milan. Arsenal’s options at the back were further decimated yesterday, ahead of the north London derby against Spurs. Wenger chose to omit Kieran Gibbs as a precautionary measure at the Stadium of Light, with Francis Coquelin slotting in at left-back for the Gunners. Coquelin’s day lasted just 10 minutes, though, as he limped off with what looked like a hamstring injury. Sebastien Squillaci was sent on, moving into the heart of defence, but failed to cover himself in glory- he deflected the Black Cats opener past Lukasz Fabianksi before being subbed off early in the second half with a knock. Alex Song dropped into central defence for the remainder of the game and, given that Aaron Ramsey was also subbed off with an ankle knock, Wenger has no shortage of problems for next Sunday’s derby.

Kieran Richardson
A place at left-back has dented his Fantasy potential and with the emergence of James McClean on the Sunderland wing, Richardson’s best bet for a starting role may be as part of the Black Cats’ defensive unit. At the back, Martin O’Neill’s side have impressed of late; they had chalked up four clean sheets in six prior to last week’s league defeat at the hands of Arsenal but this time managed to keep the visitors at bay, in another intelligent defensive display. A deflected opener also served a reminder of Richardson’s eye for goal, suggesting Wayne Bridge faces a real struggle to establish himself in the Black Cats XI.

That's a little childish and very uncool this season. An RVP injury leaves you with no captain unlike last year.

Arsenal really looked out of sorts testerday. Unless it was solely Sunderland who were flying. Gave Arsenal no time on the ball and had their midfielders in their pockets. Arteta simply shown inside with nowhere to go and nothing to do with his non existant left foot.

Truly, IT (or now called Impressive Larnaca) has been an asset to the Europa so far. Considering how he came in cos of Reinaman's resignation, we consider ourselves fortunate 🙂

Colehole has volunteered for his own Group H, if I ain't mistaken. More writers the better - increases the participation as well 🙂

This is the only interesting things that's been happening on this site.

To summarize the rest of the events
        a) Valencia to Y.Toure/Siggy/Sess
        b) Aguero->Rooney gw 28
        c) Downgrade Silva to Y.Toure
        d) RMWCT for gw28
        e) Postpone wc till gw 30 as fixtures will get cancelled and double gw's are added
        f) Evans- best defender from ManU
        g) Captain choices- Rvp, Ba, Aguero, Silva

Now tell me which is better??????

Haha nice quote there, Alex Song.

See how many Dzeko gets in the home fixture of the Europa - I reckon he could be in a good shout if he's benched again. But, in general, City tend to score more goals with Balo on the field. Having said that, BOL & BLA are easy games and Mancini could easily afford to start Dzeko.

it has to be said, and you can call me out for making excuses in advance, but you have a major advantage over me to start this tournament. with all the teams being so similar, so close from the WC window, the 4 point advantage has a lot more impact than i think it will a few weeks from now when we play again and our teams will be likely more different. But Fuzzy will figure out a way!!!

No kidding, 4 pt is absolutely crucial. You can now truly sympathize with the manager's predicament when they say that the fixture list has been cruel to them. I also have a wc left, which can really come in handy. Most likely will use that to level the competition on an away fixture.

Here it is - I've done so little real work today...

UCL 2012 Team Profiles - Big Thanks to Impressive Lanaca for the idea and the Key Differentials bit. Please feel free to modify this.

    Group A

    Manager: Back to Back Ballacks
    Team: Bayern Munich
    Rank: 10,939
    TV: 105.8

Vetran FPL player Ballacks takes the top spot in Group A. Boasting five
consecutive 2000+ points seasons, including 2 top 10K finishes, he
will surely be looking for a return to the glory days of 2006-2008.
Liberal with the transfers (31 so far), Ballacks is yet to play
his wildcard and will no doubt be confident that it won't be required
    until the knock out stages.

Key Differential: Alex OC is the most exotic player here but seems detined for
the bench. Instead, look to Taiwo and Zamora to score in their
home fixture, against FUL no less. Deprived of Robert Huth, Ballacks could
reinforce at the back but the smart money is on him saving the transfer for
    the second group game.

    Manager: Tommytour59
    Team: Napoli
    Rank: 11,195
    TV: 107.4

With a score just 1 point and 256 places below the top group seed,
Tommytour59 seems well placed to chase first place and a kinder draw
in the knock-outs. Having taken just 3 hits this season and with a sub
10K finsh last term, Napoli will prove to be a mighty obstacle to all the
    other entrants in the group.

Key Differential: Moses. Yep, the Holy One. Stop sniggering at the back.
Anyone who's seen wigan's fixtures will know that Moses should get every
chance to score big. Shawcross, meanwhile has two home games. Even with Senderos
injured, Napoli are formidable opponents. Triple Man C coverage ain't too shabby
    either.

    Manager: Roberto Newman-cini
    Team: Manchester City
    Rank: 6324
    TV: 110.4

To call Man city a dark horse hardly seems fair, given manager Neman-cini's
drive for a second consecutive sub 5K finish this season. Usually a careful planner,
Newman-cini's been rather caught short by injuries to both Valencia and Lindegaard
and a slight loss of form post winter wildcard. Rivals will be moniotoring his
    transfers with great interest.

Key Differential: Transfers hold the key here. Only 1 free and up to three inactive
players. A late change is on the cards with the prospect of a points hit not too remote.

    Manager: TW
    Team: Villareal
    Rank: 87,865
    TV: 110.4

The Yellow Submarine, led by enigmatic manager TW, have their task cut out for them
in this tough group. They will likely be relying on subtantial transfer funds and a
kind run of games. Holding triple Man City assests should help their cause, but their
first objective will surely be to finish third in the group and drop into the Europa
    League knockouts.

Key Differential: The only team in Group A to hold Sessegnon, proving that differentials
are all relative. With over 1m in the bank, a defensive upgrade is also possible here.

    Group B

    Manager: JMS - Inter's interim.
    Team: Internazionale
    Rank: 1,708
    TV: 107.9

JMS arrives in hot form. Four green arrows since the Winter wildcard have seen him
shoot up nearly 8000 places and make him the runaway favourite in group B. Not daunting
enough? How about a rank of 309 in 2009? This team means business.

Key Differential: Look for Valencia to be replaced, although McClean's form could instead see
JMS' funds go to upgrading the defense. Clichy looks ripe for the chop here. A double transfer
is nigh on unimaginable given that JMS has taken just one points hit this season, so the Yak
will surely start at the Etihad.

    Manager:CatMac
    Team: CSKA Moscow
    Rank: 22,408
    TV: 109.8

A poor run of form has seen CatMac slip over 20,000 places since the turn of the year.
Don't be fooled by this, she's still the 5th best manager Zambia have to offer. Managing
through the long Russian winter could take it's toll on this outfit, though rumours of a
robot / android body upgrade are as yet unconfirmed.

Key Differential: Big Jon Walters gets his chance to shine. Whilst CatMac will no doubt be
losing patience with the OOP-er, two tasty home fixtures could be a shot in the arm for this
team and will aid Sharcross' points too. Given the uncertainty surrounding Stoke players,
Will the mercurial Dzeko be trusted to lead the attack?

    Manager: GreenWindMill
    Team: Trabzanspor
    Rank: 44,338
    TV: 105.8

An FPL veteran, GreenWindMill's Trabzanspor are the only team in this group to still hold their
wildcard. A rise of nearly 20,000 places since GW18 is not bad going, considering that Mackems
are not allowed in this team. Controversial team selection issues aside, GreenWindMill's last
weekly rank below 1 million was way back in GW 14, so form remains good here.

Key Differential: It's not often that you see a team with Kenny between the sticks. He looks
set to feature this week. Moses is another player with every chance to score big in the group stages,
or at least nab the two points that could herald victory rather than defeat.

    Manager: Chris_White
    Team: Lille
    Rank: 79,039
    TV: 108.5

A Below par 33 in GW25 shouldn't distract you from the steady progress that Lille have made all season.
The ranking will surely continue to improve, making Chris a dark horse manager if ever there was one.
Should he make it through the group, expect him to continue to peak as the competition progresses. The worst case scenario? Finishing bottom of the group and missing out on Europa League knockouts.

Key Differential: Gareth McAuley may not see much game time but any points he earns will not be shared with the other teams. Replacing Valencia is not imperative for this week though we can't discount a cheeky points hit with this manager.

    Group C

    Manager: TorresMagic
    Team: Benfica
    Rank: 55,474
    TV: 107.1

A Sven of a manager here with many fingers in many pies. TorresMagic will be desperate for Napoli to
match last years' rank of 848. One of only a few to have taken no hits this season, TM's philosophy is
all about the forward planning. A sharp rise in his recent form will give confidence that the team
are peaking at just the right time.

Key Differential: How long can Wes Brown stay in this team? With Senderos' condition not yet known, a defensive transfer is possible this week. We're also in the rare position of seeing Kompany as a
differential in this group - TM will doubtless be hoping for another Richards no show.

    Manager: Sir Arselot FC
    Team: FC Basel
    Rank: 41,416
    TV: 107.6

Sir Arselot will be hoping to do well in this group. He has a fair chance. Mixed form
has seen his team lurch between 20,000 and 50,000 since Gw 15. No stranger to taking hits,
Sir Arse could refresh his line up at any time, causing disruption in a group where 2nd place
    seems wide open.

Key Differential: Zamora provides a dangerous option, playing for a new club with excellent short term
fixtures. Raylor, Walters and Huth are capable of large scores, though the latter is a prime candidate
for an upgrade. With 3.2m in the bank, this team remains dangerous with obvious upset potential.

    Manager: FergoDog
    Team: Manchester United
    Rank: 6,168
    TV: 111.1

Group B's top dog is having a cracker of a season, staying in the top 10K for 9 weeks and counting. A
small recent blip provides the only chink in his armour for rivals to exploit. Given his huge team
value, FergoDog is well placed to correct this and end his season in the top 10K, with perhaps a nice
    cup run to boot.

Key Differential: FergoDog doesn't shirk from making transfers. We are likely to see Valencia and
Sturridge replaced sooner rather than later. With 4.5m in the bank, he has the entire range of
players to chose from. Expect to see a BIG hitter drafted in soon.

    Manager: JoeySamSam
    Team: Otelul Galati
    Rank: 57,576
    TV: 107.6

Led by a manager who prefers not to seek the spotlight, tongue twisting team Otelul Galati will want
to stay in the competition as long as they can, despite a drop of nearly 20,000 places last week and
three consecutive 4 pointers. The winter wildcard's initial boost seems to be fading rapidly.

Key Differential: In a team with several left field choices, Dave Cisse stands first amongst equals.
Fantasy bounty could also be delivered by Larsson and Old Timmy Cahill. Will he hedge his bets and keep his Liverpool and Everton assets through the blank week? With Valencia also out, it's unlikely.
