Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek Twenty Nine – Monday

Steve Kean’s Blackburn made it three wins in the last four to haul themselves out of the relegation mire. Once again it was the talents of Junior Hoilett and Yakubu that came good – providing further evidence of Blackburn’s firepower which seems set to preserve their Premier League status. Here’s the notes on last night’s Ewood encounter…

Morten Gamst-Pedersen
Playing alongside Steve N’Zonzi in a central midfield role, the Norwegian was a hugely influential force and produced the assist for Yakubu’s vital second goal. Gamst-Pedersen has now provided two goals and five assists in his last twelve league starts – a burst of form that has helped maintain a supply line to both Yakubu and Junior Hoilett.

Yakubu
Suspended for Gameweeks 22-24, the Nigerian’s returns had slowed of late. Last night’s goal was only his second in five games – a spell which has seen other low-to-mid price assets such as Fulham’s Pavel Pogrebnyak rise in popularity. At 5.9 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Yakubu still offers value and has proven himself fixture proof enough to ensure that he can be considered, even despite Blackburn’s tough short-term schedule (bol MUN wba LIV swa).

Junior Hoilett
With a 5.5 price tag, Hoilett is the alternative to Yakubu as a Rovers attacking option. Whilst he’s spent much of the season in a wide role, a position that has appeared to hamper his Fantasy returns, Kean’s decision to bring Hoilett in-field in a direct support role to Yakubu appears to afforded the Canadian a greater involvement. His smart volley for the Rovers opener was his sixth of the campaign and, significantly, his third goal in two games. While Yakubu has the benefit of spot-kicks in his locker, Hoilett’s influence on Blackburn’s overall play is greater and, if he can maintain his newfound levels of goal threat, he could yet justify a punt as a third striker options.

Sunderland’s slipping form
The honeymoon period appears to be over for Martin O’Neill. While the results were dropping in, statistically the Black Cats were always producing few efforts on goal. That doubt has come to the fore in recent matches, with Stephane Sessegnon’s absence robbing them of a creative spark. Last night, O’Neill’s side mustered just three goal attempts – they have scored just four goals in their last six league games. Sessegnon’s return from suspension can’t come quick enough but there will be concern that, even with his presence, O’Neill’s side are struggling for a cutting edge. Sessegnon will be reinstalled for the visit of QPR at the weekend with O’Neill likely to drop Frazier Campbell back to the bench. Meanwhile, James McClean has now failed to notch a Fantasy return in his last four matches. Although he provided a strong supply of crosses last night, with other budget options flourishing, the left winger’s stock is now in decline. Sunderland badly need to find a higher gear against the R’s.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

After doing Silva > Valencia I now have no City players, no Tottenham players and no attacking Liverpool players..

Should I be worried at all?

I see you actually have Bale. I would only worry if you didn't have him.

Going without City cover for a while is risky but not worth worrying about seeing as the points could fall anywhere (Silva, Aguero, Balo, Tevez, Dzeko).

No attacking Liverpool players is a non-issue.

Because if that entire team and the service he got was in England, he would still be doing people in. The passing movement of the entire team is a feat in itself. Or just throw him on Arsenal or City or even United and I think he´d come close to doing the exact same. Shawx vs Messi, a joke.

i actually think he would struggle in la liga. he has always had a poor record against the spanish sides, although to be fair even though they always get outplayed like barca they are a great team. his tactics against true passing teams were so exposed even against bilbao over those 2 legs, it was pretty embarrassing for him. imagine having to play teams that pass a lot every week.

Van Persie vs Rooney Captain GW30

In the last few years it seems that Aston Villa tend to be a bit of a bogey team for Wenger. On the other hand as far as I can tell Van Persie has only played them once in the league in these last few years:
2010-11 Arsenal 1-2 Aston Villa (Van Persie)
2009-10 Arsenal 3-0 Aston Villa (FabregasX2, Diaby) (Van Persie not in squad)
2008-09 Arsenal 0-2 Aston Villa (Van Persie not in squad)
2007-08 Arsenal 1-1 Aston Villa (Bendtner 😆 ) (Van Persie not in squad)
2006-07 Arsenal 1-1 Aston Villa (Gilberto Silva) (Van Persie came on at 65 mins)

It seems that United usually play very well against Fulham at Old Trafford, with Rooney featuring well in the points. Admittedly this wasn't against Jol's more offensively orientated Fulham and Rooney wouldn't have been playing as deep as he probably will this coming gameweek. That in mind:

2010-11 Man Utd 2-0 Fulham (Berbatov, Valencia) (Rooney was banned for this game)
    2009-10 Man Utd 3-0 Fulham (RooneyX2, Berbatov)
2008-09 Man Utd 3-0 Fulham (Scholes, Rooney, Berbatov)
2007-08 Man Utd 2-0 Fulham (RonaldoX2 🙁 miss you Ronny)
2006-07 Man Utd 5-1 Fulham (Saha, Pearce OG, RooneyX2, Ronaldo)

This sways me much more towards a Rooney captaincy but with RVP not really playing Aston Villa that much in the past seasons it's difficult to say how well he'll do. With RVP carrying 10 men on his back you'd think it'd weigh him down and stop him from scoring, however he seems to love the pressure behind him.
I'll be going for Rooney. If only we knew if Berbatov was starting, or Scholes for that matter. The fact Arsenal tend not to play well against Villa also helped me decide.

Since you love stats so much, did you know the last time RVP didn't score at home was back in Dec 2011 when he had an insane number of failed attempts. Also Villa are the worst team in the PL at defending set-pieces this season.

Rooney? After what happened at the Molineux? It's a risk but go with your gut.

Valencia could be a (C) decent punt as well. His quality & form should be too hot to handle.

That's an issue with United. You know there will be goals but there so many outlets from which it can come from. As far as Arsenal's concerned, if they score 2 goals, you can be rest assured RVP will be amongst one of them.

Villa actually have a surprisingly good defensive record though.

18 goals conceded in 14 away games, which is pretty good for a "struggling" team.

Also their only 3 defeats away have been

        15 October , Man City 4-1
        21 November Spurs 2-0
        5 February Newcastle 2-1

Villa aren't as bad as I thought!

In fairness I don't doubt that RVP will be amongst one, my current thinking is that it won't be the 4/5-0 score I originally envisioned.

Think Rooney has better chance of bigger score for captain choice. 😀

Plus bonus stat, Fulham have only won 12 away league games in the past 6 seasons.

Yeah, brought in Rooney now Utd were out of Europa.

Rooney was part of a non-hit 2 transfers.

The 2 to get rid of Lindegaard and bring in Valencia was the 8point hit 😀

I realised that the majority of rivals in any leagues don't have Rooney.

Just looking a minute ago, one ranked 14,444 has no Rooney OR RVP.

Ade, Suarez, Aguero is his strikeforce of choice.

Hopefully can make a big dent in his 104 point lead this weekend!

Silva > Valencia looks great unless we see something special from Silva tonight to suggest he has refound his early season form.

Keep Skrtel for Wigan at Anfield and double up on Pool's defence.

Nah...well sort of, Everton will play a relatively high-line this evening and look to trap as does Arsenal. Last outing it lead to a squeezed midfield and a lot of offsides. I think RVP gets it right this time early, and Everton are basically forced into playing un-Moyes-like.

Balotelli has been widely touted as a good solution to The Third Striker Problem. Is this based on his last three games? (since he didn't play for weeks on end before that). In that case, it's just based on scoring against Blackburn and Bolton at home and he only scored once against each of them. To me that isn't massively impressive. Better options? I have money burning a hole in my bank account and seriously considering something very stupid like Tevez.

I'm don't think Mario is an exciting prospect for the 3rd striker either. There is too much interference from Mancini to allow strikers to play match after match and get a big run of goal scoring. And with Tevez coming back the tinkering just got real so I can't figure how who will be getting the goals.

Hi guys I need to downgrade Morrison now cause I wanna get rid of Demps for Bale in GW 31/32 .
Should i do Morrison>Surman this week due to todays scribbles about Hodgson want to rotate his players.

Surman also have Wolves at home this week 😆
Surman will most likely only be played this week against Wolves if I do it. As i will be playing these guys every week from GW 31/32:

    Bale,Walcott,Valencia,Siggy

Santos, as Gibbs won't be fit for long. Santos I think/hope will play tonight and answer a lot of questions. The most important question being: can he spark service down the left side and end/even-out all the wasted service down Theo's side. Anyone they've put down the left has basically been watching the play all on the right (Gervinho, AOC, Yossi etc). Gibbs last match, didn't even really attempt to facilitate any build-ups via the left-side. He simply moved it on to the right side.

That being said Wenger has a hard-on for Santos; he played him when he shouldn't have and ended up breaking him earlier in the season. I think he can't wait to get him in the mix. But beware he may try to ease him in.

It all depends on what kind of player you're up against. If he makes similar transfers to people on this site, you'll have no chance.

If you have rooney and RVP then they should be your only two choices unless you are chasing a massive lead. Suarez against anyone is a worry, but he is showing some signs of improvement.

Can't see past Rooney or RVP for the armband myself though.

Am I mad to be selling Bale after GW30?

I am bringing Ade in for Spurs cover and it is to fund Lampard and a upgrade in defence (with Siggy now a nailed on starter for me every week). I'd have an extra 2 penalty takers in there that way and I think Lamps will be crucial for Chelsea in the run-in, he will be rested for FA Cup IMO that is 3rd on Chelsea's list of priorities after CL and finishing top 4.

Bale to Drogs? How would that work one is a mid the other a striker. I don't plan on Bale to Lamps, I plan on Bale to a budget option to rotate with McClean and then Dempsey to Lamps.

think Lamps and Ade is better than Bale and Drogs, very little difference in overall price, but you get 2 penalty takers, and Lamps for me is more secure, no one else can fill his role for Chelsea, if those goals on Sunday have woken Torres up then Drog could be under threat.

Of course if we are getting the old Torres back then Lamps can piss off as Torres at his best would be a must have, but I think we'll have to wait until next season for that.

that's what your bench is for. But I think he'll start more games then he'll sit and he'll be crucial to Chelsea getting top 4 IMO. He'll start more under RDM than he did under AVB

was about to make that point re: Tevez and yes they signed Hargreaves who United let go due to injuries almost it seemed to me to have another petty dig at United, Hargreaves has barely played for them either.

United since Scholes came back 25 out 27 points, only dropped points v Chelsea

indeed, everyone I know wanted him hung for letting Tevez go, I said we were well rid of him as all he did in his 2nd season was moan about not being the centre of attention. Now everyone can see that I was right and, more importantly that Fergie knew what he was doing and probably saw this coming.

What a lame attempt to influence the title race from Patrick. It's a strength to recognise that he still has alot to offer to the team. Fergie is utilising all the resources he has. United have won 8 and drawn 1 in the PL since Scholes return and wait for it, overturned a 7 point deficit on City to go 4 points ahead.

      Poor Pat.

Telegraph are running a poll asking what is a bigger act of desperation, the return of Scholes or the return of Tevez.

It's 70-30 in favour of Tevez and I have a feeling most of that 30% is City fans 😆

quick poll - best striker to get for the next few weeks out of

    1. Balotelli...rarely gets double pts, but could be a steady stream of points
    2. Ade...capable of a 20 plus score
    3. Odem....fitness concerns, but great record
    4. Suarez....is his recent partnership success with Gerrard a sign of things to come?

I think a certain Danny Graham's worth a mention by virtue of him rotating with Clint so well and being dirt cheap. Could step up for penalties as well, since Scotty may have become too predictable.

I think Ade is more like Balotelli with steady returns than explosive returns (most of the time). Both coudl be decent punts.

Odem playing well but Hodgson (now WBA are all but safe) has announced rotaion of his squad, and as you said Odem has injury concerns too.

As much as most on here would disagree, I actually rate Suarez the best option of the above over the next few weeks. A few assists followed by a goal could be the start of some form too?

Complete non-story. Basically, bitter old timer sees vague similarity between the point when his career went a bit sour with everyone blaming him and Tevez coming back for Citeh. Interesting more for the fact that the BBC saw fit to publish it than for the actual content of the 'story' 🙂

Yeah read it this morning what sort of logic is he employing?!

Mancini will be sacked if he plays Tevez and they don't win the title. They are trailing now anyway can hardly blame Tevez.

"Since Tevez allegedly refused to come on in that game in Germany, Manchester City have been knocked out of every competition."

Hardly an argument for Mancini not to play him is it?
