Watchlist

The Watchlist – Martin Petrov

Last week’s torrent of rescheduling wrought merry havoc on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) landscape and, as we emerge bleary-eyed to survey our newfound surroundings, the prospect of bumper double Gameweek harvests and blank Gameweek droughts dominate our horizons. Sewing your hopes where long term goals are married with short term gain is not easy when few fields are sheltered from the inconstant temper of the resculpted fixture list, but Bolton Wanderers have surfaced from the maelstrom well placed to offer Fantasy managers that elusive opportunity.

Back-to-back doubles in Gameweeks 35 (SWA, avl) and 36 (sun, TOT) dangle a juicy carrot for those long term investors willing to brave the stick of a Gameweek 34 blank. In the short term, a visit from a Fulham outfit with just two away wins all season, and a cruise up to Tyneside to probe Alan Pardew’s patchwork rearguard could prove fertile furrows for a Trotters side with three wins and seven goals in their last three Premier League encounters.

Central to the late upturn in Bolton’s fortunes has been the resurgence of Martin Petrov. Recently re-installed on the left by Owen Coyle, the Bulgarian international has broken into a canter after a somewhat pedestrian season thus far. A goal, an assist and three bonus points over his last two outings bear testimony to the reinvigorated threat of a player boasting more shots than the rest of the Bolton midfield combined between Gameweeks 30-31.

Petrov’s cultivated left foot has long ensured him a decent slice of the set-piece pie. An indirect free kick specialist, he currently shares corner kicks with recent Watchlistee Ryo Miyaichi, and with the faltering form of Ivan Klasnic and Kevin Davies regularly consigning both to the bench, Petrov has grabbed the chance to add spot-kick duties to his extensive repertoire.

With injuries rife at the Reebok, Petrov’s fine form should secure a berth wide left for the foreseeable future and with transfer targets stacking up for Fantasy managers in preparation for the Gameweek 36 bonanza, cheap differentials with strong form and consistent fixtures are more sought after now than ever.

Currently priced at 5.1 and owned by a mere 4%, Petrov costs marginally more than his immediate competitors in the Bolton midfield Ryo Myaichi (4.9) and Mark Davies (4.8). Considering his set-piece potential and recent domination of the Bolton midfield from open play, however, an additional outlay of 0.3 is unlikely to constitute a prohibitive premium, with the Bulgarian looking set to play a pivotal part in Coyle’s quest for top-flight safety.

Anyone else think that gw33 might be as much of a planning minefield as 34 or 36? The tight turnarounds for several squads will have plenty of rotations risks attached. 9 teams play on the 7th and the 9th.

      very possible

It;s one of the reasons I will not make a transfer. Every chance the player you bring in won't even play.

It also means that with the 1 transfer I need to get 11 out in 34, I have 2 FTs in 35 to start building towards DGW

    Hi Guys!

Have a very tough decision to make for this week - bench one out of Dempsey, Walcott or Bale as I am playing RVP, Rooney and Dave upfront.

Please give your reasons for picking one out of 3 midfielders.

    Thanks in advance.

I c. Don't you think that Man City fill find a way to shut down Walcott somehow? Reluctant to bench Dempsey as he will be playing in a more advanced role as long as Pog remains injured that is.

Because Walcott is in form you cant tell. His weakness is a solid LB who knows when to back off and when to close in. Or atleast that was the old walcotts weakness.

But City do have Clichy and Nasri who know a fair bit about him

City may also opt for Milner's work rate out on their left.

Bale was unlucky to not deliver any against Swansea and he's got 10 for the season which is pretty good for a midfielder. Spurs are coming off of their tough fixtures now and should be able to capitalise with some decent results

Dempsey got a goal and an assist at home, him playing at home being the important element. Fulham also destroyed Wolves 5-0 when they were at home, that sort of quality didn't translate when they were away though with Wolves beating them 2-0.

Dempsey could score, but since Fulham have only scored around 7 goals away from in the premier league this season it's not incredibly likely.

Additionally O'Niell has been talking about how he's going to include some fringe players into the Sunderland side, if he does it always increases the chance of them playing poorly and Spurs punishing them because of it.

Sturridge or Cisse in for Pogrebnyak this week? Or I may just drop Progrebnyak and play a five man midfield:

    Ben Arfa
    Sigurdsson
    Walcott
    Bale
    Young

And if I were to play 3 up front, who to drop from the midfield? All signs point to Bale or Walcott.

reckon that's a fairly accurate guess

I can't recall a season like this one for bargains though

      Evans
      McClean
      Siggy
      Caulker
      Vorm
      Raylor ( *spits*)

All sub 5.5 (or started that way)

You have the likes of Sess, Valencia, Sinclair producing for under 7. Ba was 6.3ish at his lowest, when on form he was a bargain.

Did you not watch the Swansea game. He look in lethal form. Pretty sure most places gave him motm.

You've got to remember 'arry seemingly doesn't understand how to break down the bigger teams leading to inevitable loses and small points scoring when there are tough fixtures. Spurs fixtures are looking good and so will the points.

Having watched him closely for several years in two managerial stints at Pompey, yes.

He has two standard tactics, all out attack 4-4-2 or everyone behind the ball defending. He then has "switch to wingbacks at half time" if things aren't working.

He gets the best out of players and knows a talent when he sees one, no arguments there, but tactically he is very, very poor.

            And he is vile.

Am now about to bash Torres

If United have won the title before they play City (which is possible, it could be 8 points after this GW, only needs to be 10 before that game) I would sell Rooney in 36 and get Torres for DGW

He could easily destroy Wigan. Only thing I'd say is be careful, if he starts tonight, every chance Drogs starts v Wigan.

You should be choosing at least two from that lot, IMO.

Either all three ot two + a defender/keeper.

Tough to rank them in terms of importance, depends on your situation. Safest is Bale, biggest punt is VDV, Adebayor somewhere in the middle.

Tough call between Bale/Ade but I'd say those two ahead of VdV simply due to possible rotation and the high chance he'll almost certainly miss 60 minutes out of those two games.

Neither. Pick someone who plays in GW34 if you're selling Ba.
