The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Lost In Rotation

Maybe it’s the loss of control – the fear that, no matter the logic behind our decisions, we’re at the mercy of another’s whims. Whatever the psychological babble surrounding the Fantasy manager’s view of the rotation policy, there’s no doubt that it can hit us hard – just below the gut, where it really hurts.

If today’s teamsheets at Goodison and White Hart Lane provided early Gameweek wounds, we can at least take some comfort that at least one of the culprits will be similarly bruised as a result of the tinkering.

Harry Redknapp’s decision to make five changes for the home clash with Norwich ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea truly backfired, condemning Spurs to a damaging defeat, leaving the back door ajar for Newcastle to drew level on points with their routine win over Bolton.

Without the promptings and threat of Rafael Van der Vaart and the power and presence of Emmanuel Adebayor, Spurs struggled to make an impression on yet another spirited Norwich showing. With Scott Parker also preserved, Spurs were unable to wrestle control; even the belated introduction of Adebayor failed to spark them as they slipped to a 2-1 reverse.

Gareth Bale was fit enough to start but, again, failed to register returns. His performances have warranted better but, with Spurs scoring just six goals in their last seven games, Bale has struggled to maintain the form that had seen him nudge his way to essential status in Fantasy terms. That status has slipped spectacularly – nine starts without a goal makes painful reading for his remaining owners and will doubtless fuel further heavy Fantasy sales.

Over 40,000 have already shed the Welshman off the back of the uncertainty going into today’s game – there’s likely to be plenty more to follow with the yawning Gameweek 34 blank looming. Bale’s Gameweek 36 double with Blackburn and Bolton remains a temptation and could yet carry a sting for those who have lost patience. Indeed, the run-in remains ridiculously favourable for Redknapp’s men but the loss of form is alarming. Bale can’t turn fortunes and win matches on his own – his efforts in recent weeks have proved that much.

Form is certainly no issue at Goodison Park, with today’s 4-0 rout of Sunderland bringing their third win in four. Despite the result, David Moyes was the other villain of the day. The Scot also made five changes to his lineup, notably resting Nikaca Jelevic and Leighton Baines, a player who had, until today, had missed just a single league game over the past two a bit seasons. Unlike Redknapp, however, Moyes will be feeling rather smug this evening.

The Everton boss watched his “makeshift” lineup sweep Sunderland aside with Scout Pick Steven Pienaar and winger Magaye Gueye particularly influential. He’ll now sit back and observe how Kenny Dalglish shuffles his pack for tomorrow night’s Ewood Park visit, comfortable in the knowledge that his own key players are well rested for their FA Cup clash, opening up a four point gap over their rivals in the process.

Credit to Moyes, the plan came together beautifully. When that plan is a rotation policy, however, it’s so often us Fantasy managers left wincing. I’d like to imagine that Moyes will feel just a small pang of regret with his celebratory dram and slippers tonight. We already know that Harry will be choking on his Horlicks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm now unsure of my planned Surman -> Sess transfer this week. Without a front man to play behind, Sess is very ineffective. Does anyone know if Bendy is likely to be back for the w/e?

Options appear to be (needs to be playing in GW34)

    a) Sess
    b) Arteta
    c) Sinclair
    d) Larsson
    e) Yaya
    f) Song
    g) Rosicky
    h) Brunt

    Best choice?

I'm probably between a) and b). Arteta showing decent form and will be boosted by that goal against MCY. Will probably stick with Sess, but not as confident as I was!

I'd suggest that Arse are also still playing for a reason, whereas I wonder if Sunderland might just be pulling back a teensy bit. Arteta also a definite differential, if you have any need of such.

Sess is the popular choice and I'd suspect Bendtner to return, especially after the display this week. But that's conjecture.

Yeah, there's that to consider too. If only Arteta would pull the trigger more often! Upside with Sess is he has a better GW36 fixture than Arteta (and I'd be playing whichever I bring in then too). No real need of a differential (4 points behind ML leader). Make Sess more appealing?

Sorry, jins ... just saw this.

I think that Sess has a bigger upside/downside than steady-eddy Arteta. So, in that case - and to nullify likely moves by rivals - I'd say Sess wins, of the two.

for sessegnon & caulker? (or another defender & mid combo)

I wouldn't ditch Bale, Dempsey or Cisse, so that leaves ditching Skrtel or Simpson if you want to field 11, and I don't think there are any options out there that warrant a 4 point hit. Play 10 in 34 and have an extra DGW for 36 imo

        no, no, you dont understand.

Hmm, still don't think it's worth a hit. 9 in 34 just means 2 extras in the DGW. The only defenders i'd consider taking a hit for in GW34 are Vermaelen and JEvans, and you already have them. That leaves Bale and Dempsey - on reflection, i think it's fine to lose one for Walcott for a hit, so long as you can get Dempsey back in GW35 or Bale back in GW36. Doable?

Well.........If I get rid of Bale, sure he comes back in nor problem.

But if I get rid of Dempsey, I'm not sure I'll be getting him back. Sure, the wigan fixture is great, but his DGW fixtures are pretty poor.

But what youre saying is that Bale>walcott is indeed worth 4 points if it means I field 10?

Actually, scratch that. If I do Ryo>sess I don't have the funds for Bale>Walcott.

Isn't Bale more expensive than Walcott?

Despite LIV's recent form, Agger is back and Reina will be soon too. Also KK will be desperate to finish above EVE so I expect a significant improvement from LIV over the last few games, and they have a decent GW35 and DGW - I'm keeping Skrtel for that. If it were me I'd just play 9 and hope the likes of Walcott etc get rested.

6 one, half dozen the other.

A matter of your game style, really. Most years I'd defo take the hit to bring in a defender. But, personally, I haven't taken a hit so far, so I'm really hesitant to do so - even if it means going light for a week. Your other players will get two games by the time 36 comes around anyway. A hit essentially voids a CS.

I constantly try to remember what schmucks occupy these boards, for the most part (present company excluded).

I fall victim to it myself - bringing Bendtner in two weeks ago. Self-hate. Also, you never know what their styles are in playing, where they are in their ML's, ranks, etc. I wouldn't let anyone change your basic gameplan.

I reckon you are right. Without VDV and the deadman (Ade) in the team it's much more apparent but it looks as if Bale is the only one in the team capable of a bit of magic to unlock a defence and hit a strike. If you weren't so thin on the ground in terms of widemen I reckon Bale could play support striker better than VDV.

Yeah, I'm amazed at the capitulation tbh. I thought only we were capable of it. Wind back 2 months and you looked irresistible and a lock for at least 3rd. Now 4th will be tough. That said, I'm not ruling out us throwing it away.

I would love it, LOVE it if that happens!! We can deal with chelsea ourselves in a few weeks. Spurs have 4 games against relegation threatened teams (including villa), so you never know.

I was thinking that it would be easier to catch you guys, based on fixtures, but the way you played against city, I can't see you slipping up.

    gw35:

    walcott > dempsey, mclean > pienaar - 4pt hit

    gw36:

    valencia > bale, rooney > cisse - 4pt hit.

my team for gw36 would be:

    krul (2 games)

simpson (2 games), shawcross (2 games), caulker (WOL)

dempsey (2 games), bale (2 games) sess (BOL), pienaar (2 games)

cisse (2 games), RVP (stk), jelavic (2 games)

I have plenty of £££ to alter the personnel of changes (may get adebayor/vdv), but I've got the number of transfers each week sorted I think. 4 pt hits are fine by me. 8 DGWers should be enough.

ditching rooney and valencia is risky, but hopefully worth it.

    How about this question:

    Current team for this week
    Vorm
    Verm Evans Caulker
    Valencia Siggy
    RVP Rooney

    Only 8!

    Best transfer:

    Ryo>Sess

If they score two, of course.

And one also has to consider getting doublers back after that.

so it is technically a hit, but maybe not so costly of one.

I think the Ryo for Sess trade makes sense. Ryo doesn't look like a double gameweek star to me. There's no way he gets starts in all 4 and Bolton don't exactly look full of goals, bad luck aside, to me. I'm thinking about taking a hit to get McClean in, I don't have the money for Sess.

I think it depends on who you're selling. In Ryo's case, I think it is. Skrtel, maybe. Bale, I don't really think so. Of course you're talking to the guy who kept Silva until this week, so my track record is stained in terms of knowing when to get rid.

Mini league table looks good. I've moved up to 2nd, only 4 points behind Mrs China Mag. She has captained RVP though (Dave for me), and so has my main rival in 3rd, so I would expect the table to change again before the end of the game week.

My main rival is just 8 behind (with captain RVP to play for him). And he has a wildcard. So he is definitely in the driving seat. I'm hoping that with good planning, I can pretty much negate his wildcard though.

My current plan is to have 10 for GW34, and 8 for GW36. No hit. As my 3 non DGW players will be swansea, who play wolves, i don't think he can do much more.

If he was chasing, he could go balls out and get a midfield of VDV, Mata, Gerrard, lampard, Bale, but in his position it would be too much of a gamble.

        What do you think?

I'd say a wildcard could be as much a curse as a blessing. Will the likes of those you mention really get two games? Bale and Gerrard, likely yes. The others? Not so sure.

For your sake, you just have to be smarter, picking the quality players who will actually play two games - coupled with your 10 from 34. Hopefully, your rival goes nutty, brings in lots of DGWers who don't pan out, and who'll be a burden for the last two weeks.

Remember, captain choice is typically the most important decision during all of these weeks.

Yeah it would just be for GW34 & 35 and then whoever comes in would be out for Baines in GW36. I like the look of Sunderland and Bolton at home for defensive returns.

Need to bring in a defender this week and none of the teams with (supposedly) easier games really appeal that much. Turner? McCauly? Are they any more trustworthy?

You seem to be fixed on Sessgnon or McClean for Surman depending on finances.

Do Surman->Sess. I think 3 Arsenal player in front 8 is too much.

What do we think the BP's for Cisse will be, my rival is really getting close. Need RVP to have a quite game, and hopefully Cisse to get the maximum bonus points? I'm thinking he'll more than likely just get the two though, with Ben Arfa getting the three.

Yeah. He probably will. Me and Mrs China Mag split the captain risk as dave had the form, but RVP has the fixture.

One goal from dave didn't do it for me. If I could do a UCL style captain change I surely would!!

Good luck on breaking the top 10,000!! The way things are going, both myself and Mrs China Mag should join you there soon. Probably after GW34.

hopefully, you're on quite a rise yourself, keep up the good work. Really hope Toon snag 4th over Chelsea and Spurs, they deserve it.

Question: Worth getting in BArfa DGW? Would mean benching McClean though

I think so. I don't think McClean will ever get a huge score. He's a 1 goal + 1 assist + bonus type player. Even against wolves.

We will be playing wigan, and a knackered chelsea. Even though both games are away, Barfa could go big. Might be worth getting him in the game before against STK if you can.

He is definitely on my radar!

Players I'm looking at for DGW:
                        A) Bring back Bale (did Walcott->Bale last night)
                        B) Adebayor
                        C) Baines/ BAE/ Huth
                        D) Ben Arthur

Would give me a team of:

                        Vorm
                        Baines*-Williamson*- Caulker
                        Demps*-Bale*- BArfa*-Siggy
                        RVP-Adebayor*-Cisse*

That will be my front 7. Maybe VDV instead of Dempsey.

So my plan for this week:

                Enrique->Verm

Worth a wait? He going to increase in moment. 99% at Tfpl.

                Ruddy(MCI)
                Kompany(nor) Evans(AVL) Caulker(BLA) Verm(WIG)
                Sigurdsson(BLA) Valencia(AVL) Walcott(WIG) McClean(WOL)
                RVP(WIG) Rooney(AVL)

Morning Asyraf. Ok, might wait because I want to see Arsenal without Kos. At this stage 0.1 not worth that much is it?
