Season Review

Team of the Season – Michel Vorm

Often dependable, sometimes spectacular, Michel Vorm was undoubtedly one of the stars of Swansea’s superb season back in the top flight.

A £1.5m capture from Utrecht, the Dutch stopper was outstanding from his first showing in the 4-0 defeat at Man City in the opening Gameweek. While his defence received the runaround from debutant Sergio Aguero on that occasion, Vorm showed enough to hint at his potential – his 10 saves on the night was never bettered by any keeper all season.

As the Gameweeks rolled by, Vorm was to inspire the Swans’ defence to an extraordinary run of clean sheets at the Liberty Stadium that was to quickly establish him as one of the season’s most wanted Fantasy assets.

The Statistics

Vorm’s strong first campaign saw him rank only behind City’s Joe Hart in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper chart, as the Dutchman recorded 14 clean sheets to Hart’s 17. Trailing the City stopper by just eight points overall, Vorm’s value, with an initial 4.0 price compared to Hart’s 7.0, is undeniable.

While Hart slipped to a low of 6.8, Vorm’s price escalated week by week; by Gameweek 23 it peaked at 5.3. As the season closed, he was owned by a third of the FPL manager base – only Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale boasted more owners: an incredible feat for a relative unknown in his first season in England’s top-flight.

While the Swansea possession game and stable back four will take some credit for Vorm’s achievements, it’s worth emphasising just how much the keeper played his part. His 143 saves in the FPL was second only to Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey, a keeper who received plenty of shot-stopping practice in front of a fragile and shuffled rearguard.

Only Vorm’s bonus point haul disappoints: the fact that he mustered just three all season is surely symptomatic of an EA Player Performance Index that rarely acknowledges the contributions made by the men between the sticks.

The Prospects

Swansea’s player of the year in his first season, Michel Vorm has killed any speculation by declaring that his future lies at the Liberty. That will have disappointed the queue of suitors that was thought to include Arsenal, eyeing him up as a deputy to Wojciech Szczesny.

While that news is welcomed both in Wales and amongst Fantasy managers, sadly it seems inevitable that we have enjoyed the very best of Vorm in Fantasy terms. The Swansea defence, priced so keenly by the FPL this term, will surely be in line for significant price rises across the board, with Vorm subject to an increase of around 1.5 to put him firmly in the mid-price bracket.

That is likely to dent his potential next term, with the clamour for budget keepers the now-established strategy in the FPL. Even if Swansea can repeat their defensive feats of 2011/12, it remains to be seen if Vorm can attract interest with a price tag that will rank him alongside the likes of Brad Friedel and Tim Howard – excellent keepers who last season captured around just 5% of the FPL ownership in comparison.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This was my first season and I'm starting to realise that a few things were not 'normal' this year, for example a high performing budget keeper like Vorm.

I think next season might provide more of a learning curve than I expected.

True. I remember having him while at Birm and just playing him week in week out.

I'm def looking at Ridgwell or Foster(if he stays) at WBA. Depending on the new manager.

WBA seemed to start defending and playing better at the end of last season.

            Al habsi/Boyce also.

Yeh, forgot about him. Maloney as well, especially if Moses sods off.

Wigan/Qpr/Wba will be my focus to get some value for money on players that have played premier this past season.

Depends who their new manager is. Doubt Martinez will go there.

                    Taiwo/Morrison(Wba) could be good value

My 22 outfield players I would take just for reference:

Defenders: (8) GJ, Richards, Cahill, Lescott, Terry, Jones/Smalling, Baines, Cole
Midfielders: (9) Parker, Barry, Milner, Carrick, Gerrard, Ox, Walcott, Young, Lennon
Forwards: (5) Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge, Holt, Crouch

      Knowing that we won't win.

I would give the squad and the U21s four weeks training together.

Whilst taking six pub sides to the Euros, as each could only play one half before yakking up or fighting with the other team or officials and a good half dozen or so being arrested.

This would eliminate the normal false expectations of all but the most blinkered of English fans and bookies and we could all get on and enjoy the weather.

I've noticed from several euro RMTs that there seems to be two spots available in midfield with a budget somewhere around £14m

Many have Ozil, Sneijder/iniesta and shirokov as 3 dead certs.

I currently have Marchisio and Srna in there, £7m each

Other options include premium and value, a £10m+4m - Iniesta and Andrews for example

Another I'm considering is Lamps/Nasri/Young/Fabregas and a top defensive midfielder around £6m M'vila or Strootman, even although not defensive Rasmus Elm

Appreciate any feedback...What to do eh

Dont lol too much on def mids, they will get 2/3pts for recovering balls. While the likes of Sneijder, Ozil and co will rely on assists and (less probably) goals. Plus most of us will not captain them (many will captain VP/Huntelaar, CRon or Robben on the second day).
Def mids who can also assist/on set pieces are completely overlooked here. Examples include Xavi, Pirlo, Cabaye, Modric

He "might" play vs Italy that only conceded only TWO goals in qualifying. The best defensive unit probably of all the teams at Euro 2012.

Is my understanding of the Euro transfers correct.

You can sub in a player who has their game on a different day (before their game has kicked off) but would then lose the points from the original outfield player you have? Similiarly with the Captain you can change the captain during the gameweek before they have played their game. But in total can only have a team of 11.

    Advice would be great guys

Yes that's right. Basically sub out any 0-2 pointers for someone that hasn't played yet and change your captain for someone that hasn't played if you think you can get a bigger score.

What was the margin of victory?
      What was your score?
How many weeks were you at the top?
Was it already won for you weeks ago, or was it all down to a nailbiting final game/player?

What was the margin of victory? 9 points
        What was your score? 2189
How many weeks were you at the top? 9 weeks
Was it already won for you weeks ago, or was it all down to a nailbiting final game/player? down to the last day, I had a 12 point lead and he captained Aguero where I'd captained RVP
Who were the other main contenders? Champions Elect and GC Crowdpleasers
What was your biggest mistake? Not brining in Rooney at the start of the season
What was your biggest success (transfer etc)? Captining RVP against Blackburn / bringing in Dempsey against Newcastle

It was a close affair but after nine weeks at the top TommyF finally secured victory in the (name of minileague here) with a lead of just 9 points and a final score of 2189.

The final gameweek proved nailbiting for TommyF with Champions Elect and GC Crowdpleasers coming fast up his rear. In the end his mistake in captaining RVP over Man City's title winning goal here Aguero proved immaterial.

Across the season Tommy F puts his success in (name of mini league) down to some shrewd transfers and captain decisions, including RVP and Dempsey's mega hauls against Blackburn and Newcastle respectively.

Not bringing in Rooney at the start proved not to be the league ending blunder he feared it was way back at the start of the season.

Congratulations to Champions Elect and GC Crowdpleasers for making ...(name of mini league here) such a hard fought campaign.

After some research yesterday this is what I have come up with.

    Malafeev/Isaksson

    Mathijsen/K.Pap/Kadlec/Barzagli/Strinic

    Dzagoev/Plasil/Ozil/M'Vila/Makos

    Huntelaar/Gomez/Ibrahimovic

I also am considering brining in Cassano when added to the game and swapping Plasil for either Larsson or Kallstrom.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Swedes suck defensively so Isakson is a bad choice also the dutch just wanna score goals and not defend too much so Mathijsen is not a good option either

Just look at the qualifying stats, they were one of the worst teams defensively to qualify for the euros. Im not actually saying they could not defend, just saying they will probably score at least 2-4 goals every game and will concede at least 1. They are like arsenal in the prem.

well you can disregard the last game in Sweden as they had already qualified. They also had a lot of injury problems in defence & goalkeeper.

But they still do, Pieters looks to miss out. And also historically they are not a side to keep it clean at the back, they just score so many that they dont need to. If I would look at a dutch defender it will need to be the 5,5 guy who gets the LB spot unless Boulharouz takes it. I see you are from netherlands and im actually supporting your country :D, but my take is that dont have their defender unless its someone with a big goal or assist threat.

True that Pieters is out, but more importantly Stekelenberg, VDW & Mathijsen are all fit now. Defensively you should not underestimate the work that van Bommel & de Jong/Strootman do.
Hopefully Anita gets the LB position now that Emmanuelson has been cut from the squad.
Good to hear you will be supporting!

Ok well, I quess its a matter of opinions as always. Im not an expert. But still no Dutch defenders for me, if you ignore the defensive form, just look at the group they are in :D, even the Danes are a great attacking side with good creative players.

Hmm I dont know, as Estonians a team that missed out on the Euros with a loss to Ireland in the playoffs. We saw Chechs as the easiest matchup and the team we could beat. For me they are the weakest side in the Euros(maybe Poland and Ukraine are worse- but I have not seen them play.

For that money you could have better defenders, like any France or England nailed on guy, Russian or even a German defender, also Alba from Spain.

Footballers benefited from Giggs' affair - he probably had the choice between an away game in Azerbaijan to decide who finished 5th in the group or bang his bro's wife and he chose the latter, thus giving some other footballer an extra cap in the process.

Robben's a forward so it's a straight Muller>Robben, VDV>Kroos, but it would free up some cash to do Schweinsteiger to maybe... Sneijder...

The front 8 look good, though with respect to coverage of Netherlands try and make room for Sneijder over VDV. And Ozil is likely to get you more points than Schweinsteger, but I guess that is up to you as you must have budget constraints.

Also is Jelavic a guaranteed started over Olic...Guess the warm up matches will hold the answers

As for defense, I can barely recognize 2-3 of your defender/gk, so I will reserve the judgement for your defense for now.

One last thought. A lot of us are thinking of the players as they were playing in their club teams. Things will be very different in their national sides - and not just for England! Here is where there might be a small advantage for Poland and Ukraine, as well as their home status.

I am off to have a very expensive lunch in Chelsea. Fortunately, I will not be paying. 😀

A player's club and country form is almost always different. But I guess you have nothing else but the warm-up matches, and qualification results to base your team on. Though I might get in a Polish and Ukraine player, home advantage completely slipped my mind.

Enjoy the free lunch....Hope it comes with no strings attached 😉

I assume you won't be playing either.

My theory is that it's the heightened demand of the PL that makes major tournaments such a disappointment for some of the big guns. It's not just England who underperform, it's usually all PL players.

I'm sure competing domestically and continentally takes it out of anyone, but the players from the German and Spanish leagues (ie Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal...) still seem to be able to produce the performances at the major tournaments.
