Season Review

Team of the Season – Michel Vorm

Often dependable, sometimes spectacular, Michel Vorm was undoubtedly one of the stars of Swansea’s superb season back in the top flight.

A £1.5m capture from Utrecht, the Dutch stopper was outstanding from his first showing in the 4-0 defeat at Man City in the opening Gameweek. While his defence received the runaround from debutant Sergio Aguero on that occasion, Vorm showed enough to hint at his potential – his 10 saves on the night was never bettered by any keeper all season.

As the Gameweeks rolled by, Vorm was to inspire the Swans’ defence to an extraordinary run of clean sheets at the Liberty Stadium that was to quickly establish him as one of the season’s most wanted Fantasy assets.

The Statistics

Vorm’s strong first campaign saw him rank only behind City’s Joe Hart in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper chart, as the Dutchman recorded 14 clean sheets to Hart’s 17. Trailing the City stopper by just eight points overall, Vorm’s value, with an initial 4.0 price compared to Hart’s 7.0, is undeniable.

While Hart slipped to a low of 6.8, Vorm’s price escalated week by week; by Gameweek 23 it peaked at 5.3. As the season closed, he was owned by a third of the FPL manager base – only Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale boasted more owners: an incredible feat for a relative unknown in his first season in England’s top-flight.

While the Swansea possession game and stable back four will take some credit for Vorm’s achievements, it’s worth emphasising just how much the keeper played his part. His 143 saves in the FPL was second only to Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey, a keeper who received plenty of shot-stopping practice in front of a fragile and shuffled rearguard.

Only Vorm’s bonus point haul disappoints: the fact that he mustered just three all season is surely symptomatic of an EA Player Performance Index that rarely acknowledges the contributions made by the men between the sticks.

The Prospects

Swansea’s player of the year in his first season, Michel Vorm has killed any speculation by declaring that his future lies at the Liberty. That will have disappointed the queue of suitors that was thought to include Arsenal, eyeing him up as a deputy to Wojciech Szczesny.

While that news is welcomed both in Wales and amongst Fantasy managers, sadly it seems inevitable that we have enjoyed the very best of Vorm in Fantasy terms. The Swansea defence, priced so keenly by the FPL this term, will surely be in line for significant price rises across the board, with Vorm subject to an increase of around 1.5 to put him firmly in the mid-price bracket.

That is likely to dent his potential next term, with the clamour for budget keepers the now-established strategy in the FPL. Even if Swansea can repeat their defensive feats of 2011/12, it remains to be seen if Vorm can attract interest with a price tag that will rank him alongside the likes of Brad Friedel and Tim Howard – excellent keepers who last season captured around just 5% of the FPL ownership in comparison.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

TommyTour - Robben is not a midfielder in real terms. He does very little defensive work and although he doesn't lead the line he is the main attacking threat for Bayern/Holland and very much a forward player. At the major tournaments it's Sneijder and Robben who excel and I think that will be the case again. RVP should have his best tournament for Holland yet but I would still back Robben to outscore him.

Where does Huntelaar fit in this? I see a lot of uncertainty on here over his place but he played most of every qualifier and scored by far and away the most goals in qualifying of any player from any country.

            From here...

"In attack, Van Marwijk must decide whether to pair Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar together, both of whom have enjoyed prolific seasons in England and Germany respectively, or continue with his policy of deploying one central striker.

"They can play together," said Van Marwijk. "I'm glad that Klaas-Jan became top scorer in Germany and Robin in England, but I'm also glad that Wesley Sneijder is fit again and Arjen Robben has been doing good things."

I see Kuyt being the odd man out, with RvP, Wesley, Robben playing a three behind central Huntelaar. De Jong & van Pummel, I mean van Bommel, to provide the centre mid muscle. Injuries and fitness permitting, obviously.

Looks like it. No kuyt and no Vdv. Unbelievable how much talent they have, but yet it always seems a defensive unit(Italy?)figure them out and they often don't end up winning the tournaments.

It's a minefield to guess who will score well for them.

                Any idea whose on corners/Fk?

I think Huntelaar is more nailed on than RVP, although I think RVP will play with Robben, with them either side of Huntelaar with Sneijder behind and van Bommel & de Jong/Strootman in front of the defence

It's pretty simple. RVP will definitely play, the question is where he'll play. If Huntelaar plays he has to play as the main striker, which would make RVP a winger as I can't see him displacing Sneijder. Robben will play too. RVP is better in the combination than Huntelaar, which is why RVP is usually preferred over Huntelaar and I think this will happen again in the summer. With Robben and Sneijder behind RVP, that leaves one spot for either Kuyt, who hasn't played much this year, or Afellay, who's just back from injury. Van Marwijk loves both thses guys, so it might depend on the opposition. We have no left back, so against countries that have a strong right flank, Kuyt might play to help out defensively.

I really thought Emanuelson would be the left back. It's silly he was dropped, but I think Anita will be one of the last 4 to be left out as well. It's very frustrating how we have to bench a total hero like VDV and we don't even have one decent left back in the country and we still don't have a better alternative than Mathijsen at CB.

Yep, it is ridiculous. I was also surprised that Emanuelson was cut. You might be right about Anita but I will keep hoping as Bouma is just terrible, would've also prefered Buttner to him! Don't worry Mathijsen will soon be replaced by Douglas!

    EUROS question
AFter reading the rules, one thing still confuses me. If you play a player for the first match who scores, say 2, thus bench him for a sub for the second match... what happens if the sub doesn't play? Does the 2 point guy come back in?

Jayzico, I believe there is an option to allow 'auto' subs or do it manually. If you want to man-manage your side through each round, you would lose out in your example. But the opportunity to ditch a 2 pt'er for a 'potential' higher scored later in the GW is worth the risk.

        That's my understanding.

For 1.5 extra you can have a player, Robben, who is guaranteed to start and is actually good at football.

Figured id put my team up for scrutiny (will put country by names for clarity)

    Pletikosa (cro), Sifakis (gre)
Cahill (eng), Pizczek (pol) Zhirkov (rus) K.Pap (gre) Ward (ire)
Sneijder (nld) Ozil (deu) Shirikov (rus) Mandzukic (cro) Kallstrom (swe)
Muller (deu) Robben (nld) Ibra (swe)

Looking to wc in gwk2, noticed ive got a some similar names to others with a few different choices, although wil probably change some after friendlies. Also im English, my team name is God Save the Team so i have to go for at least 1 England player, theres no way im picking a Frenchy for gw1! I know this against fantasy logic but decided im not putting fantasy in front of my support!

Muller as a striker makes no sense. He's not even guaranteed to start. For £8m you could take Lewandowski. He's POL's top striker and would make a v good (c) choice for GW1.

    Can anyone help me...

I've been trying to find the GW38 points for
    - Ramieres
    - Ivanovic
    - Modric
    - Adebayor

I usually just go to transfers and check "round score" but now transfers are closed I'm stumped.

Anyone any ideas other than trawl thru random teams looking for the players?
