Season Review

Team of the Season – Michel Vorm

Often dependable, sometimes spectacular, Michel Vorm was undoubtedly one of the stars of Swansea’s superb season back in the top flight.

A £1.5m capture from Utrecht, the Dutch stopper was outstanding from his first showing in the 4-0 defeat at Man City in the opening Gameweek. While his defence received the runaround from debutant Sergio Aguero on that occasion, Vorm showed enough to hint at his potential – his 10 saves on the night was never bettered by any keeper all season.

As the Gameweeks rolled by, Vorm was to inspire the Swans’ defence to an extraordinary run of clean sheets at the Liberty Stadium that was to quickly establish him as one of the season’s most wanted Fantasy assets.

The Statistics

Vorm’s strong first campaign saw him rank only behind City’s Joe Hart in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper chart, as the Dutchman recorded 14 clean sheets to Hart’s 17. Trailing the City stopper by just eight points overall, Vorm’s value, with an initial 4.0 price compared to Hart’s 7.0, is undeniable.

While Hart slipped to a low of 6.8, Vorm’s price escalated week by week; by Gameweek 23 it peaked at 5.3. As the season closed, he was owned by a third of the FPL manager base – only Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale boasted more owners: an incredible feat for a relative unknown in his first season in England’s top-flight.

While the Swansea possession game and stable back four will take some credit for Vorm’s achievements, it’s worth emphasising just how much the keeper played his part. His 143 saves in the FPL was second only to Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey, a keeper who received plenty of shot-stopping practice in front of a fragile and shuffled rearguard.

Only Vorm’s bonus point haul disappoints: the fact that he mustered just three all season is surely symptomatic of an EA Player Performance Index that rarely acknowledges the contributions made by the men between the sticks.

The Prospects

Swansea’s player of the year in his first season, Michel Vorm has killed any speculation by declaring that his future lies at the Liberty. That will have disappointed the queue of suitors that was thought to include Arsenal, eyeing him up as a deputy to Wojciech Szczesny.

While that news is welcomed both in Wales and amongst Fantasy managers, sadly it seems inevitable that we have enjoyed the very best of Vorm in Fantasy terms. The Swansea defence, priced so keenly by the FPL this term, will surely be in line for significant price rises across the board, with Vorm subject to an increase of around 1.5 to put him firmly in the mid-price bracket.

That is likely to dent his potential next term, with the clamour for budget keepers the now-established strategy in the FPL. Even if Swansea can repeat their defensive feats of 2011/12, it remains to be seen if Vorm can attract interest with a price tag that will rank him alongside the likes of Brad Friedel and Tim Howard – excellent keepers who last season captured around just 5% of the FPL ownership in comparison.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Interesting choice of words. Did he mean to say that Terry will be proven guilty?

Hodgson said: "If we take the court case first of all, that's obviously very unfortunate for him but we must emphasise he is an innocent man until such time as he is proven guilty.

Serious Question: If you had to, who would you pick for your Euro squad:

    Gerrard
    Young
    Walcott
    Lampard

I assume Lampard will be on set pieces.

If he's being doubled up on then surely he's not the best pick. His form has been good at Arsenal though. A lot of his cut back crosses might reach Gerrard often. I think i'm going for Young though, he's good all round. He can shoot, assist and he has bags of pace.

REPOST - Last post on previous page - sorry

Oh Dear….the England squad looks dire! Especially our attacking options….Defoe and Welbeck (Pub class definitely not world class)

No Scholes, Adam Johnson, Micah Richards, Holt…and Britton (Yes you heard it right) – saying that the OX has got a look in.

I think he’ll start the first two games:-

    Hart
    Jones Terry Cahill Cole
    Parker (if Fit) Barry
    Walcott Young
    Gerrard
    Carroll

What he could of Had (minus major injuries e.g. Wilshire etc): -

    Hart
    Richards Terry Dawson Cole
    Parker
    Gerrard Scholes
    Walcott A Johnson
    Rooney

Oh well…at least the pain will only be for 10 days max.

Well what could happen in GW 3 is that, RVP, Gomez, Özil, Lahm, Evra, Schneider, Robben and many other widely owned players may sit that game out if the group is decided. Than you could have a half empty team. And hits are no good to take in this game were attacking players are not so greatly rewarded.

also bear in mind we will only know the lineups for Group A games before the GW3 deadline, so even after that much will be guesswork, perhaps the only player we can say for sure will play in GW3 is Rooney

REPOST Also lost at bottom last page:

    Matchday 1 (WC matchday 2)
    Malafeev / Given
    Corluka / Sivok / M. Kadlec / Torossidis / Ignashevich
    Gusev / Sneijder / Mandzukic / Larsson / M’Vila
    Robben / Gomez / Lewandowski

The only one I’m not sold on is M’Vila, though he did score a goal in qualification.
If I downgrade Robben to Kuyt I can upgrade M’Vila to Yarmalenko, but I won’t know whether that’s an option till the friendlies start.

Right i'm finally making a McDonalds Euro team.

I'm thinking strategy-wise i'll put more money into defence than I'd normally do in FPL. My reasons being
    1. There's no BPs for forwards to take advantage of.
    2. The first round of internationals in a major tournament are usually quite tight.
    3. Defenders get more recovered ball points.

So team right now is looking like..
    Given(Ire) Cech(Cz)
    Evra(Fr) Pieters (if fit Hol) Alba(Sp) Zhirkov(Rus) Strinic(Cro)
    Ozil Gotze (Ger) Shirokov(Rus) Larsson(Swe) Andrews(Ire)

Can't believe England didn't pick carrick, woy decides to split between terry/rio because of age/games/fitness but chooses to ignore the same criteria when selecting gerrard(KD says )can't play 2 games in 4 days and is constantly ringing in sick, lampard is being rotated all season because of fatigue, and then em Parker - who's now and has been for a long time on the physios table, add to the mix a rookie AOC who is unproven at club nor international level and I seriously question why Michael Carrick who has been ever present all season, injury free, can play 2 games in 4 days, is highly experienced at club and national level and IMO has had a relatively decent season is not chosen.

Carrick is a useless "short, back and sides" merchant aka a broken cigarette machine.

Now that i've cooled off i can actually see why he's picked Downing. When England need to sit back and defend a lead, Downing offers a more secure option than Young. Terrible player though. And Carrick has been both solid and creative this season for united, not too boring and not too erratic, i'm disappointed he's not coming.

Glad Carrick is not going. He would have been a typical "he performed once, so lets pick him again" selection.

Carrick is a holding midfielder, so it is Parker and Barry that is keeping him out of the squad.

I agree though. Stevie G should have been allowed to spend the summer at the physio clinic.

Lampard will perform excellent. Just like in the WC.

        Troll?

Scholes came out of retirement to partner Carrick in central midfield. I thought QPR were experts in knowing it's quite hard playing with only one man in central midfield.

Srna can play right back (and sometimes does at club level).

All through the qualifiers he's played right midfield though (I've checked). Plus he's on set-pieces, is nailed on (captain) and has a very respectable goals tally at international level.

          He's in my team.

Don't think we're going to get an answer on this. Time will tell I guess.

For the moment, 10 clearances sounds like quite a lot to me so I don't think many players will get more than 1 point per game from it. Not nothing, but not enough to convince me to downgrade my big-hitters. If that turns out to be wrong, I'll be WCing early anyway so I'll only miss out on one set of games.

depends on whether they need to defend. a team under the cosh (as they say) will garner more recovered ball points than a 'good' defender in a strong team doing all the attacking. as mentioned tho, defenders are a stronger source of pointage in this format than in FPL. the premium you pay for a good defender might well be worth it but just don't expect extra points if the oppposition don't bring it. seems a stupid post(mine) now i read it back but screw it POST

The top scoring defender in terms of Reovered balls still in the competition (so out of Bayern or Chelsea players) is Ivanovic with 86 RB from 10 games.

He got 13 points for these that he wouldn't have got in the FPL system, averaging 8.6 RB and 1.3 PPG from the system.

The most any defender got in one game IIRC was 3 points (15-19 in one game).

However this allows defenders to get up to 5 points without a CS.

Centre backs generally seem to do better than fullbacks, and there are always some players from weak teams who get loads every game

Eriksen is a classy player but in a ridiculously tough group so wouldn't pick him.

My $0.2: I think the fact that most of the players picked for the England squad mostly play for 4-5 teams should be good for teamwork.
I'm surprised that both Lampard and Gerrard have been picked, as they never seem to work well together. Maybe they won't be on the pitch at the same time.
Very surprised Defoe has been picked, as he's shit.
It's a good thing Ferdinand hasn't been picked. Better to build a team from the ground up, rather than pick individually good players that don't complement each other. Roy has a good history of the former.

I think it was Gary Neville who talked about having mini-teams on the pitch - your 2 CBs, the LB and LW, the RB and RW, and the 2 CM should complement each other (not necessarily come from the same team, although it helps).

Sneijder is class- first name on my teamsheet too. Larsson is good as well, I called you out on the other 3. Ireland and England will play very defensively I doubt there will me many goals for either team. And Eriksen has a horrible group. There are at least 2 for 4 mil starting mids and should be some more 4,5-5 mils. They will get plenty of points for Recovered balls and some odd assist/ goal here and there.

I was suggesting this since there look to be more clearer options in forwards and defenders are important in this format, so there is need to have budget options in the mids.

    Stromsgodset v Tromso

Stromsgodset are a strong home side and I would fancy them against anyone at home so with Tromso coming here missing their first choice 'keeper Sahlman and midfielder Bendiksen I think the home win is a generous price @ 10/11. KO is 17:00.

    Vaasa PS v FF Jaro

Should be plenty of goals in this game, Jaro have the worst defense in the league and VPS don't even have a 'keeper (trying to get an emergeny loan because first and second choice are both banned) Over 2.5 goals is priced @ evs and is well worth taking. I'm also going for a stake on over 3.5 too @ 9/4. KO is 16:30.

It really was a coin toss, but I'm not surprised that Düsseldorf's nerve proved to be stronger. Pity that both sets of fans wrecked the occasion though. Hertha are considering an appeal against the result and the German Football League are investigating the crowd trouble. Don't think the result will be overturned though.

Düsseldorf will have to play at least a couple of matches behind closed doors, I reckon. That's going to hurt them, as I see them struggling from the outset in the Bundesliga if they don't improve that squad. Bröker may leave, Rösler will retire and I don't see enough creativity elsewhere.

But what if Defoe gets injured? who will score the goals? Welbeck/Carroll are hold up strikers, they need a foil

You're surprised that Jagielka, Sturridge and Johnson aren't in the squad? It wasn't exactly a surprise

Carroll in the Euro's - Good choice Roy
Welbeck and not Holt - I'm annoyed at that, Welbeck is so overrated.
No Rio - Haha he's crap anyway 😉
Phil Jones - another overrated piece of rubbish
    Downing - what the ****
    And no Scholes 🙁

Think England may go far, nevertheless.

He is not wrong when he says Welbeck and Jones are over-rated.

He is being harsh on Rio and 100% correct on Downing.

Marco Reus is a striker isn't he. Listed as a mid- OOP! Probably won't play though
