Season Review

Team of the Season – Clint Dempsey

Fulham’s American international was undoubtedly one of the season’s big success stories. An established figure in one of the Premier League’s “unfashionables”, Dempsey was largely overlooked at the start of the campaign but gradually emerged as an irresistible Fantasy force, capable of scoring goals from central midfield, the flank and, of course, whilst deputising up front.

Dempsey’s versatility makes him a prize asset for his club and, in Fantasy terms, also means that he’s likely to feature as the spearhead for several matches. This season he capitalised on that opportunity in some style, firing four goals in a three-match stretch as Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak sat on the sidelines. That spell, more than any other, tempted big investment, whilst a double Gameweek and a newfound ability to convert direct free-kicks, saw him edge towards essential status by the campaign climax.

The Statistics

Dempsey’s early season form hardly hinted at what was to come. As Martin Jol’s side stuttered, so Dempsey struggled in tandem, firing just a single goal and assist in his first six league starts as Fulham went without a win.

The Cottagers first victory arrived in style, with a 6-0 thrashing of QPR. Dempsey struck his second of the season in that game, but still reached Gameweek 9 with just two goals and three assists to his name: hardly the form of a player who was to emerge as the leading Fantasy midfielder.

The 2-0 away win over Wigan in Gameweek 10 was to start a run of 14 matches which saw Dempsey notch nine goals, including a hat-trick in the 5-2 win over Newcastle at the Cottage in Gameweek 22. By that point, the American’s ownership and price at last began to rise, having remained stable at his initial cost of 8.5. It immediately jumped to 8.8 following those three goals and would go on climbing to peak at 9.8 by Gameweek 37.

Dempsey ended last term with a run of seven goals in his final 11 league starts as he totalled an incredible 17 goals for the season. With seven assists and 22 FPL bonus points to his name, Dempsey saw off the claims of Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and City’s David Silva to establish himself as the top scoring Fantasy midfielder.

With a previous best of 12 goals and three assists, Dempsey had elevated himself into the heavy-hitter bracket. He was owned by 18% of FPL managers by the end of the campaign and had etched himself on our pre-season watchlists for 2012/13.

The Prospects

Dempsey’s future at Fulham is now critical, both to the West London club and to his prospects in Fantasy terms. Understandably, the suitors are circling Craven Cottage right now, eager to acquire the services of a midfielder who can raid the penalty box with such effect. Dempsey is a precious commodity and Martin Jol’s top priority this summer will be to keep him at the club.

With Moussa Dembele also attracting interest from the Premier League’s finest, Jol could see his midfield dismantled if the cheque books start to flutter big money in their direction.

For Fantasy managers, we need Dempsey to sit tight. We’re set to see the FPL push him into the upper echelons of the midfield price list, with a figure in the region of 10.0 perhaps likely. That would be reason enough to overlook Dempsey’s lure but, should he also end up a small fish in a big pond at another club, it could kill off his prospects entirely.

Another season at Fulham will likely see Dempsey feature in our squads when fixtures fall in his favour. Whether his price will be competitive enough to see him attract a high initial ownership remains to be seen. The suspicion is that Dempsey will suffer a significant hike, whilst also struggling to maintain the incredible standards set last term.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If Dempsey's 10.0 and still at Fulham, then I'm bailing out, I'm afraid.

I think it's pretty likely he will come back a bit in price before he starts rattling them in again, he should have plenty of early season ownership off the back of last year.

He was just as effective on the wings as through the middle. He played on the left of midfield when he got his hattrick against Newcastle.....

        ..... which I captained him for 😉

When at 9.5 he got 65,000 entries to make his price rise till 9.8, so I would say if at 10 next season and banging them in... many will buy.

I remember earlier this season lots of people said he's not worth 8.5 because he's at Fulham. End of the day he's greedy as hell, likely to be OOP and is a big fish in a small pond.

I don't like the format since gw 1 is out of the way you don't have to be a brain surgeon to know who the (c) options are for round 2 and beyond.

A good start is vital IMO. To make up a 15+ point I think will be difficult.

people not captaining RvP that week was one the biggest mysteries of the season for me. I knew main rival would have him as c so I left it on him knowing ifd he was rested it'd just switch to Aguero, but he went crazy (which he did) I wouldn't lose out. I don't get why people didn't do the same.

..."There are rumours that Arsene Wenger is considering giving Robin Van Persie a break this weekend against Blackburn to try and freshen him up for the three upcoming away games against Sunderland, AC Milan and (probably) Sunderland again.

Van Persie has scored 21 goals in 23 games this season, but his shooting hasn’t been quite so accurate recently (except for penalties!) and it is said that Wenger believes it may be a good chance to give him a rest now"....

BTW...just for you....from official Arsenal website.

Wenger - I’m considering resting Van Persie.Arsène Wenger is considering how best to utilise his striking options ahead of Saturday’s match against Blackburn - and that could mean a rest for Robin van Persie.

The captain has started 11 of Arsenal’s past 12 matches - scoring seven goals - but his manager admits he is “tempted” to rotate for the match at Emirates Stadium.

“I will rotate a little bit because many players have given a lot,” said Wenger. “[With Van Persie] the temptation is there.

So yes, I fell for this shit.

those are my keepers as well Doos, though about Pletikosa over Given, but Given is cheaper and they both have to play Spain and Italy anyway, so may as well get the cheaper guy with the Italian manager.

one of the faves for golden boot, but wouldn't want him week 1. But for 0.5 less you can get Llorente who is a better option IMO and invest in France midfield with Nasri or Ribery.

      Too much in mid IMO.

Strinch and maybe Rajnoch will not play, there are better, playing, cheap options about. With the number of fixtures, and manager subs available there is no such thing as cheap bench players, you will use everyone. People with the likes of Strinic and Polanski either haven't read or haven't understood the rules. Ferguson type players are not an option in this one.

too much in mid? as we have seen over many years of playing fantasy football, midfielders always score higher than defenders. if you do not have to have a minimum of 3 defenders, and can afford 5 midfielders and 3 forwards, i say go for it.

yes, but the rules are very different than for FPL meaning defenders have a much higher scoring potential and there is no need for bench fodder, therefore the budget needs to be spread more evenly.

    LONG POST

    Milanista,

An odd number of teams in qulifications is not a problem. There are several qualification rounds, so an inclusion of one extra team just means that some teams would have to start in a previous qulification round.
Say, there are 14 teams which play in two rounds for 5 spots in the group stage. Then, there are 8 teams starting in the 1st round, 6 teams starting in the 2nd round. 4 teams advance to the 2nd round, where 10 teams play for the 5 spots.
Then there are 15 teams (plus Spurs), they play in two rounds for the same 5 spots in the group stage. Then, there are 10 teams starting in the 1st round, 5 teams starting in the 2nd round. 5 teams advance to the 2nd round, where 10 teams play for the 5 spots.

According to UEFA regulations, 1 place in the group stage is reserved for a titleholder. There are 32 teams:
1 titleholder, 21 teams directly (12 champions from associations 1–12, 6 runners-up from associations 1–6, 3 third-placed teams from associations 1–3), 5 winners from the play-off round Champions Route, 5 winners from the play-off round League Route.

Non-Champions Route consists of 2 rounds and includes 15 teams. Champions Route consists of 4 rounds and includes 40 teams.

When a titleholder qualifies from their league too, the titleholder's spot in the group goes to the champions of the 13th country. And there are 39 teams in the Champions Route as a result. This year, the titleholder's spot in the group stage went to FC Basel because FC Barcelona also won La Liga and qualified directly into the group stage. Quoting Wikipedia:
'Since the winners of the 2010–11 UEFA Champions League, Barcelona, obtained a place in the group stage through their domestic league placing, the reserved defending champion spot in the group stage was vacated. To compensate:
    1. The champions of association 13 (Switzerland) were promoted from the third qualifying round to the group stage.
    2. The champions of association 16 (Scotland) were promoted from the second qualifying round to the third qualifying round.
    3. The champions of associations 48 and 49 (Faroe Islands and Northern Ireland) were promoted from the first qualifying round to the second qualifying round.'

In the next season, there will be 40 teams in the Champions Route and 14 teams in the Non-Champions Route (because Spurs are simply eliminated). From each Route, there are 5 teams qulifying.

To sum up, Spurs inclusion wouldn't have resulted in elimination of any team from the Champions League (at least from the qualification stage). Moreover, there are now only 14 teams instead of 15 teams in the Non-Champions Route, which means that 2 teams which would have played in the first round (FC Braga and Spartak Moscow) get automatically promoted to the next stage (play-off round). Spurs are not allowed to play in the Champions League ONLY because UEFA don't allow to have 5 teams from any association, because it's just too many (it's not Premier-League #2). An odd number of teams isn't a problem, it just means that some teams would have to play in a previous qulification round.

yup,m co-efficient, based on performances of national teams and club teams from those associations. Germany is now ranked higher than Italy, so Germany gets 4 teams and Italy 3.

I know that. You simply said you liked the German national team more, what that has to do with it being "great" that an extra German club gets into the CL I have no idea.

Yep, Germany now outrank Italy because Europa League results are given the same weighting as CL results. A rule that needs to be revised IMO. Three Italian CL winners in the last decade, zero German winners.

Whilst Spurs inclusion wouldn't have eliminated another team it might've mean't another team would've had a play an EXTRA qualifying round, and they would've likely been a CHAMPION of their 'lesser' league not a 4th placed team

No, Spurs would have been included in the 'Non-Champions Route' part of qulifications anyway. Their inclusion would have meant that FC Braga and Spartak Moscow would have had to play an extra round in the Non-Champions Route, which they should have played theoretically (and would have played if Bayern won the final).

Chelsea getting their titleholder's place means that there will be one less national champion next season. This season, champions of the 13 th country (FC Basel) got pushed to the group stage from the Champions Route and 5 other champions qulified from this Route. Next season, champions of the 13th country won't get pushed to the group stage because the titleholder's place is not free, and will start from the qulifications. So, there will be only 5 champions qulifying from the Champions Route and no one gets pushed.

what I mean't was if Spurs had been given an extra discretionary spot as the 5th English team, then likely they would've been added in the first qualifying round, against champions from lower ranked countries. Not that it was going to happen as the rules have been set out

Exactly, they would probably then proceed to eliminate some champions of weaker leagues and get to the last 32 at their expense. Not really in keeping with the principle of a European Champions League. Of course, that ship has already sailed but let's not make it any worse.

Well, if it was 2005, then it would be Chelsea who start in the first qualification round. At least they are champions of the Champions League. Non-champions are not allowed to the Champions Route 🙂

A proper answer. Thanks for that, interesting information. However, the situation is different. In this scenario, teams got pushed forward a round due to Barca winning the CL last year. If some teams had to play in an additional round as you say then that would be unfair on them.

That's the thing. With Chelsea being a titleholder and not qulifying from Premier-League, some teams (champions of the 13 th country and so on) just don't get pushed further as they normally do when a titleholder qualifies as a champion of its country. At the same time, some teams get pushed in the Non-Champions Route because there is one less team.

so basically all 4 English teams go straight into the group stages? Spur's slot in 3rd quali round goes to the team from the highest ranked country in the 2nd qualifying round and so on down the chain?

Yes, unless UEFA change their regulations.
Spurs slot goes to FC Braga because Portugal is higher in rankings than any other country in that round. There 9 teams left in the first round, 5 of them advance to the next round, which means that one team doesn't have an opponent and gets promoted automatically. Since Russia is the second best in rankings after Portugal, this team should be Spartak Moscow, what I'm quite happy about 🙂

Under 6 not so many guaranteed options just yet.. maybe Ninis for Greece as a punt or Duff/one of the other Irish boys.

I'd definitely say City will win the title again, only expect them to strengthen their already superior squad.

With La Liga, always hard to call, I feel that this year it may come down to who can win the El Classico's.

I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on my last def position?

Have 4.5 to spend and was thinking of Perquis?

Rest of my team looks like:

    Akinfeev Given
    K. Papa Kadlec Debuchy Granqvist ________???
    Mandzukic Ozil Sneijder Shirokov Kallstrom
    Lewandowski CR7 Llorente

Cassano is fit and will play every game. Hard to work out his price, he has no pedigree in international competitions for various reasons but the same can be said for other Italian forwards priced around 8-9m.

He is more of an assister than a scorer but with no baps the difference is only 1 point. I'm tempted, when he plays he is involved in a lot of Milan's goals.

Dortmund are asking "at least €20 million" for Kagawa - as with Barrios during the winter transfer window, they don't want the player to leave and so are prepared to make potential suitors pay through the nose.

Himself and Whelan are almost certain starters in central midfield. They do the donkey work so could be a good source of recovered balls in all 3 games. Ireland are much better at getting the ball back than keeping it.
