Season Review

Team of the Season – Gylfi Sigurdsson

Swansea’s capture of 22-year-old Gylfi Sigurdsson from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim was a January move that attracted little interest. While the media shone their spotlight elsewhere, the Icelandic playmaker arrived in Wales with little fanfare. Brendan Rodgers, having worked with Sigurdsson at Reading, knew different.

The signing of Sigurdsson proved a masterstroke. While Swansea had struggled for a cutting edge, Rodgers had introduced a player who handed his side a real threat from midfield.

Deployed in a central role, playing in support of a lone striker, Sigurdsson was given license to roam and deal damage. His long-range shooting, graceful stride and the ability to raid the penalty box with purpose were all in evidence from day one. Having suffered frustration at Hoffenheim, Sigurdsson took little time in adjusting to Swansea’s classy brand of football, announcing himself in the English top flight as Fantasy managers quickly began to take notice.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson’s impact at the Liberty was almost immediate. An appearance from the bench brought him an assist in a 3-2 win over Arsenal, which was followed by two more assists and a goal in the next three matches. The 13-point haul at West Brom in Gameweek 24 signaled the start of an extraordinary run of goals away from home as the Icelander hit a brace at both Wigan and Fulham in March, whilst also notching in a 3-1 defeat at Spurs.

Six goals in his first ten starts demonstrated his goal threat, couple that with four assists and it was clear that Sigurdsson offered real value for money in Fantasy terms: by Gameweek 31, his modest initial price tag of 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game had risen by 0.4.

Ironically, while his ownership and price continued to increase, this interest was to signal a comparatively lean spell for the Swansea man. Sigurdsson closed the season with just a single goal and two assists from Gameweek 32 onwards. Nevertheless, his value to the Swans as a mid-price Fantasy asset was obvious. Seven goals, five assists and 11 FPL bonus points was an outstanding return for a 5.0 midfield option; an average of 5.7 points per game was better than any midfielder in the game, edging Clint Dempsey’s 5.6.

The Prospects

Before the new blood is introduced, Brendan Rodgers has made keeping Sigurdsson at the club a priority. From the news last night, it appears that he may have got his wish. Sky have reported that a fee for Sigurdsson had been agreed with Hoffenheim and it looks as though he’ll be within their squad and on our wishlists for next season.

That has to be the best outcome for all concerned, although we now have to brace ourselves for a major hike in Sigurdsson’s Fantasy valuation.

He’s likely to move up the midfield brackets in dramatic style, perhaps even edging out of the mid-price to share a ballpark with the likes of Theo Walcott and Antonio Valencia. With such a low price this season, we can perhaps hope for something around the 7.0 – 7.5 mark in the FPL, although that could well be optimistic given Sigurdsson’s rate of returns.

Should he demand 8.0 or more, it remains to be seen if Sigurdsson would attract interest. With heavy-hitting forwards likely to remain the priority next term, we’re set to be scratching around for budget midfield talent, whilst looking to one or two expensive and secure assets. Suddenly Sigurdsson would keep illustrious company and would need to maintain a strong rate of returns to gain suitors.

Sigurdsson’s price tag will be one of the first to be scanned when the player lists are published: it seems set to make or break his potential as a Fantasy asset next season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    also lost on last post
Just watched the Cro vs. Israel qualifier from last year. Mandzukic was largely absent, with the majority coming from the other side through Jelavic. Mandzukic didn’t look threatening at all. Was this just an exception? I’ve gone for Srna instead. Looked good and got the assist for Eduardo’s second. Modric was also very impressive. Looked around and seen that Srna has the approval of some. Will definitely only go for one Croat.

Any one hear or read of the line up rumours for the Russia later on against Uruguay? Was going to double up on Russian defence, but not sure…

It doesn't matter how Croatia played last year. It matters how they are playing now and how will they play on Euro 2012.

Most of the stuff Forca shared here is more or less true. I can confirm that Croatia will probably look like this:
      Pletikosa
      Vida/Corluka/Simunic/Strinic
      Srna/Dujmovic/Modric/Rakitic
      Jelavic/Mandzukic

The problem is that we have decent alternatives for several positions, but my assumption is that above mentioned team will be on the pitch against Ireland. Pletikosa will be on goal, as will Vida and Corluka play on those positions. Srna and Modric are 100% nailed on. Modric always play good if he is not tired.
Dujmovic can be replaced with Vukojevic anytime. Rakitic can be replaced with Perisic or Pranjic. Strinic can be replaced with any of the remaining available defenders... However with Jelavic and Mandzukic things are different. Mandzukic had a really decent season, has been playing good and Croatia needs that kind of player who puts a lot of effort and especially will need him for the 1st game, so IMHO he is nailed on. Also his performances for Croatia lately have been flawless. He always did what he needed to do, always played good. Classed as a midfielder, he is almost a must have.

Jelavic is probably the best player in the form, but hasn't been given too much gametime. With Eduardo out of form and Olic lacking gametime in Bayern, it seems the manager HAS to play him and anyone want to take a minor risk should have him. He definitely WILL play against Ireland, but will it be 30, 60 or 90 mins no one can know. I can at least assure you he will play.

I see a lot of love for Srna around here. If he was classed as defender, then I'd say GO, but as a midfielder he is not interesting to me at all. First of all he is ageing too fast and his performances are poorer from day to day. 4 years ago he was truly an impressive player, but now 1 of his 10 corner kicks can't even reach the 1st post. Yes, he will be on a lot of FKs and corners, and few crosses could end up on the right players, but for 7mil, I'd look elsewhere.

Not yet....an italian is top of my wish list and keen to get a German striker in as well. The first match should give a nice indication of line ups and form. Also keen to see how defensive mids score. Alonso could be good if he makes lots of clearances. Also on pens.

Also keen to see who plays up front for Spain. If Llorente is nailed on then he could be great.

why VDV ,,wont start for holland'' ?

he is their best play aslong side Sneijder,RVP and Huntelar

Sneijder was totaly out of form whole season as well but he is a sure starter and VDV isn't?

does anyone know update about holland 1st team?

I think this might be the starting line-up:

      .......VDV.... De Jong
      Kuyt.....Sneijder.....Robben
      ............Huntelaar

Do you really think they'll leave RVP out after the season he's had? I currently have Huntelaar so I hoping this is the case, I could see them alternating between Hunter and Robin up front, maybe with neither getting a full 60 very often.

Huntelaar has had an even better season and RVP isn't really popular in the Dutch team. He never performs and has apparently refused to play on the wings. So i don't think he'll start, but i'm sure he'll get rotated with Huntelaar throughout the tournament.

I think a Dutch forward player will get the most points in GW1, can see holland getting 3 + goals against Denmark. Picking the right one will be key.

I agree, but is spending so much of your budget worth such a risk. If you picked Robben, you can pump the extra 2m elsewhere, increasing returns in that area. 2m could change a Dzagoev/Kuba into an Iniesta/Sneijder.

VDV was very effective in that position in their friendly. I think they will use Van Bommel when they need to be defensive but i think VDV may start there. It's all speculation though 🙂

Van Bommel is the captain, he'll always play. VDV has played alongside him at times, like at home against sweden and that went really well, but up against Germany Portugal and even Denmark, I don't think Van Marwijk is going to risk it.

Our lineup is filled with certainties:
            Stekelenburg
Van Der Wiel Heitinga Mathijsen X1
            De Jong Van Bommel
            Robben Sneijder X2
            Van Persie

X1 can be Willems, Bouma, Anita or even Schaars, in that order of likelihood IMO. X2 is most likely Kuyt, but could also be Afellay, although if Huntelaar plays, that will be RVP as he's certain to start, where he starts just depends on whether or not Huntelaar plays.

Yes. Huntelaar played the qualification games because either RVP was injured, or Sneijder was, or Robben, so RVP, when fit, moved to those positions to make room for Huntelaar. Huntelaar has never been picked over RVP so far.

Holland so often implode later in tournaments often due to ego problems. I can see problems in the camp later ...VDV, Sneijder, Robben, Kuyt, Hunt, RVP can't all play....one of them is going to be pretty annoyed.

    Morning all,
have Ozil and Sneijder in my team and one striker spot left to fill. Who would be the best option out of Podolski, Muller, Robben & Kuyt? Have Gomez atm but he seems to be in a similar situation with Klose as with RVP and Huntelaar.

due to being on pens? What about podolski for the germans then? Surely portugal will leak more goals than the danes?

think ive just talked myself into sticking to the germans - convinced they will score more vs. Leaky portugal than holland will against the danes. Thinking any joy holland get will come from the main striker, whereas german goals could come from any of the front 3. Now the million dollar question...podolski or muller?

That's the question we're all struggling with. I remember reading somewhere Gomez is 85% likely to start over Klose but it's just an opinion, Gomez is a risk. I like Podolski, especially if he's on pens, Muller is also a great option. Kuyt might not play but has great potential if he does(i'd steer clear personally) and Robben is nailed on, out of form but is great at setting himself up for shots. I'd be boring and go with Robben.

Paradoxically I would probably have got more value out of Sig if he'd been 7.5m this year, as the price would have put me off benching him in away games.

I agree though - much harder to bench your pricier players even though that should never be a consideration.

Actually this might not be a bad idea. Rotation is great for Defenders and Keepers but should you rotate midfielders? The great midfielders can score against anyone.

    On the subject of Siggy.

Why did he even choose Swansea? Surely he could have gone to a much better team. Fair play to him and Swansea though, it's not often it happens.

He must have liked the club and the people there. Good for him, we don't see enough players choosing the teams they like to play for rather than the teams they think will win.

He already tried taking one big move, when he went from Reading to Hoffenheim, and after a good first season it went sour. Maybe he learned a lesson there and knows he can run the show for a good few years with us. Brendan Rodgers must have been a big part of that as well having worked with him twice now.

I got lost on the last post. Other than this site, are there any sites with decent previews that indicate starting lineups etc?

On a related note, how are Quaresma and Di Natale's prospects looking?

There was a post the other day indicating Di Natale was likely to start.

I'm a little biased, but this is the best around for previews and likely starting line -ups, also because of the posters from around Europe with a good insight into their own national sides. Forca Inter's Croatian insights have been particularly interesting.

The BBC has a useful round up of each team, highlighting key players, but we kinda know them anyway and they hide it among other football bits on their site.
