Season Review

Team of the Season – Papiss Cisse

Papiss Cisse becomes the second January signing to edge his way into our team of the season and, like Gyfli Sigurdsson, such recognition is fully justified.

The Senegalese striker arrived in Newcastle at the turn of the year for a fee of £10 million from Bundisliga outfit SC Freiburg. Handed the heralded number nine shirt by the Magpies, Cisse had the reputation to match such expectations but nobody really anticipated the impact he’d make.

Priced at just 7.0 on his arrival in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Cisse delivered on his debut and went on rolling out the goals, inspiring the Magpies to an end of season run that almost sealed them Champions League football.

In Fantasy terms, Cisse provided outstanding value and helped break up the template forward lines as suitors arrived from all angles, looking to capitlise on the mid-price goal-a-game striker.

The Statistics

In the 2010/11 season, Cisse claimed the EFFIFU award for being the most efficient striker in the league: efficient is perhaps downplaying just how effective Cisse was once he arrived in England.

The debut goal against Villa in Gameweek 24 was followed by a total of 14 league appearances that brought a staggering 13 goals. And what goals.

Cisse’s scooped chip over the head of Michel Vorm in the win at Swansea provided a demonstration of his supreme finishing abilities. What was to follow in the 2-0 win at Chelsea was simply sublime. A looping, curving volley, hooked over the head of Petr Cech was a goal that no player had the right to score – perhaps only Cisse had the confidence to attempt such a strike and the ability to convert it.

The FPL’s shift to the EA PPI to govern the bonus points clearly worked in Cisse’s favour. Goalscorers appear to have the edge in the new system and, with his prolific returns, Cisse benefited from an extraordinary run of five consecutive maximum bonus returns, with 20 bonus points gathered from his 14 appearances.

The Prospects

There’s little question that Cisse will make our pre-season watchlists, although several factors are likely to govern his potential in his second season.

Clearly we can’t expect Cisse to be available in the same price bracket. He made a mockery of his modest valuation last season, and, having offered such rich returns, we should expect his price to rise to around 9.5. Given that Darren Bent started at 10.0 last term, that might even be optimistic.

That price increase will clearly influence his appeal, but Fantasy managers will also have to carefully monitor Newcastle’s form and, more importantly the role of Demba Ba. While Cisse’s compatriot openly accepted his role on the left flank of Newcastle’s 4-3-3, Alan Pardew shifted to a conventional 4-4-2 for the season climax, perhaps as a result of Ba’s growing frustration.

Ba’s shift to the flank led to him scoring just a single goal following his return from the African Cup of Nations: it seems unlikely that he’ll be happy being deployed in such a role next term. Should Pardew change his formation accordingly, we have to consider that this could impact on Cisse’s return, with Ba perhaps more prominent in the goalscoring stakes.

Enthusiasm should be curbed, then. Cisse’s price will likely be a deciding factor but there is clearly merit in scouting Newcastle’s pre-season set-up before reserving a place for his undoubted talents.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sure, but I don't wanna give them away with my rivals watching!

Not played an auction format much before, apart from dipping my toe with Player Manager.

But I did a take-it-in-turns draft league last season, and we found that your picks diverge quite a lot, so the players you see as obvious picks won't necessarily be given the same priority by your rivals.

Yeah thats the thing isnt it, you dont want to pay loads for a player only to find noone else bid...

You wouldn't pay full price if no-one else bids though, right? You'd only pay more than someone else bids, based on whatever anyone else bids.

So if I set my max bid for Ozil at 14m but no-one else bids I get him for 0.5m or whatever. If the next highest bid is 11, I get him for 11.5 etc...

Just make sure you can secure a few top names in the first bid round, once they're gone they're gone. Also make sure you also bid for players like Meireles who have potential to score but are not the main goalscorers so you have a good chance of less players bidding for them. After round 1, your player choice is drastically reduced.

my uncle and cousins are football mad fans from holland and were over recently,
they all say the dutch prefer huntelaar to rvp, who doesn't play so well for the national side as he does for arsenal, in their opinion.
i have huntelaar in my team at the moment, but will be on the phone to them a couple of days before the tournament to check the situation out

            Good plan.

Yeah, from what I've read (ex pros, pundits, experts etc), Huntelaar seems to perform better for the national side than RVP. Apparently they see him as more of an 'out and out' striker, and a better goal-getter.

Don't like it. Some very good players will get good ff scores in that head-to-head game. Unless it's the dreaded 1-1 (og x 2). So pick players who are doubtless going to do well throughout the tournament, and then if you have any low scores, you've got players on day4 to sub in.

The problem for me is the overabundance of choice in the Spanish attack, and the uncertainty over Italy's front line. Also the Spanish defence is pretty expensive.

I've doubled up on Italian defenders. There's every chance this will be a cagey, defensive opener. Both teams will be more concerned with not losing than with winning. By that point I might not even need to play both my Italians if the rest of my squad have delivered points, and if they flop I have Ibramovic and Tymoshchuk to drop in.

Holy hell, i'm hungover. I kinda of agree with the Papiss pick, although Rooney did better overall. Papiss was so superb in the the half that he played, he had to be included. Besides a Rooney RVP pick, would have been boring.

Last night was NOTHING TO GET EXCITED ABOUT.

We can have fantastic results in build-up friendlies. We should do well at them with the players we have. But regardless, we will still choke at the major tournament. We were playing against Norway with nothing to play for. Which is in no way the same as Sweden when pride, history and progression are on the table. They will have pride, ambition and a sense of their place in history. We will be England.

We shouldn't get too excited even if we beat a good team 3-0 in a friendly. We beat Jamaica 6-0, we beat Mexico 3-1.

      We beat Norway. 1-0.

The combined talents of Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Spurs, Everton and West Ham beat the talents of Fulham, Blackburn, Viking, Brugge, Sociedad, Rennes, Fredrikstad, Rosenberg, Toulouse and Hannover 96...

      I don't like 2 cheap keepers.

Neither looks like they will progress and so at some point you're going to be forced to spend about £2m of your £5m secondary budget on a keeper from a top nation in the 2nd round.

By which time he's probably gone up in price.

This isn't like FPL where you can keep a cheap keeper all season long. You're almost certainly going to have to upgrade at some point. In my case I've gone for a top keeper (Buffon) from day 1.

Yes, this is true. I'd still rather get my keeper in early and leave him there though.

Price rises really won`t come into play too much in this game. sure if a striker bags a hattrick he will go up .1 in a gw but really no more. unlikely keepers prices will go up tbh

Monitor the Greek goalkeeping situation. Other than that, I can't fault any of your picks. All filled with potential.

Be wary though because your strikers are all cheap, so getting in a big-hitter will require a hit/wildcard.

Local Croat on this forum said that he is first to be rotated if something goes wrong, also looking at their last game Eduardo was very good and is putting pressure on the coach. So if he does not play well in first half he could be pulled quickly.

True, Mata & Hazard could easily swap. But I wouldn't take Mata out of the central role, where he has been so effective esp. w/ Torres.

Ramires has been a beast in the right wing in the latter half of the season, been a catalyst for most counter-attacks. It depends what style of play we adapt next season but if RDM sticks around, this won't change much.

Today’s print edition of L’Equipe is saying that Eden Hazard is “very close” to signing a 5-year deal with Chelsea. It’s between them and Man Utd (who have only offered a four-year contract), after Hazard “definitively” ruled out Man City. The transfer fee would be around €40 million, and Hazard would earn €550,000 per month.

Is Llorente going to be first choice for Spain? Or am i better focusing elsewhere? is it just me or are the really expensive strikers not worth it? Huntelaar and RVP are rotation risks, same with Gomez and Klosse, Ronaldo has a tough group and has never really turned it on it a tournament and rooney is suspended?!

There's only one viable Polish striker - Lewandowski. I agree about the most expensive strikers for week one, however, if one of those players makes the Dutch/German loan striker postion their own, they are surely most likely to get the golden boot.
