Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Euro 2012 Friendlies

Mario Gomez is amongst the goals as Germany see off Israel and return to winning ways. Franck Ribery helps France to a 2-0 home win over Serbia as the hosts ring the changes and trial a 4-3-3, while Kyriakos Papadopoulos gets the only goal of the game as Greece chalk up a narrow win in Armenia:

France 2 Serbia 0
Laurent Blanc rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for France’s 2-0 win over Serbia last night, with only two players – Karim Benzema and Philippe Mexes – keeping the same position from Sunday’s win over Iceland. There were plenty changes to the backline, with Laurent Koscielny, Gael Clichy and Anthony Reveillere all handed starts, though Blanc’s midfield plans were disrupted after just four minutes as Yann M’Vila limped off with a worrying ankle injury. Franck Ribery opened the scoring after 10 minutes, netting after the opposition keeper had spilled Clichy’s cross, before Florent Malouda fired home the second from the edge of the area just six minutes later as Les Bleus extended their unbeaten run to 20 matches. Post-match, Blanc was reported to have said M’Vila has “a big ankle sprain” but didn’t expect the player to miss the tournament – further tests are expected today.

France Starting XI: Lloris; Reveillere, Koscielny, Mexes (Rami 72), Clichy; Cabaye (Martin 61), M’Vila (Diarra 5), Malouda (Ben Arfa 76); Nasri, Benzema (Giroud 61), Ribery (Menez 61).

Armenia 0 Greece 1
Greece recorded their first clean sheet in six games as they clinched a 1-0 win in Armenia. Fantasy managers will be frustrated with a change in keeper, as Michail Sifakis replaced Konstantinos Chalkias between the posts. Sokratis Papastathopoulos started at right-back with Vasileios Torosidis afforded the night off after picking up an injury at the weekend – this allowed Schalke man Kyriakos Papadopoulos to return to centre-half and he offered further evidence of his attacking potential by grabbing the only goal of the game. Priced at 4.5, Papadopoulos is one of the most popular players in the McDonald’s game and currently has over 16% ownership, though this will no doubt increase after last night’s display. Sotiris Ninis failed to shake off an injury, allowing Kostas Fortounis to make his first start for the national team in a night where Fernando Santos’ side failed to make the scoreline more substantial by missing two second half spot-kicks; Georgios Samaras (70) and Kostas Katsouranis (86) were the culprits.

Greece Starting XI: Sifakis; Papastathopoulos (Makos 62), A. Papadopoulos, K. Papadopoulos, Holebas (Tzavellas 60); Katsouranis, Maniatis, Karagounis (Fotakis 46); Fortounis (Samaras 46), Gekas (Ioannnis 62), Salpingidis (Mitroglou 85).

Germany 2 Israel 0
With seven of their Bayern contingent back on board, Germany bounced back from their weekend 5-3 defeat by Switzerland to see off Israel 2-0. Joachim Low made a host of changes, as Toni Kroos partnered Sami Khedira in the double pivot due to Bastian Schweinsteiger’s injury, while Mario Gomez was given the nod ahead of Miroslav Klose up front – Gomez justified his selection by opening the scoring five minutes before the break, with Thomas Muller providing the assist. Low made five changes later in the second half, with Mesut Ozil the only attacking player to be afforded the full 90 minutes, as Andre Schurrle – on as a sub for Lukas Podolski – firing home a superb second.

Germany Starting XI: Neuer; Boateng, Badstuber, Mertesacker, Lahm; Kroos (Gotze 86), Khedira (Bender 88); Muller (83), Ozil, Podolski (Schurrle 66); Gomez (Klose 66).

tbh, I got the same problem.

situation with those is that Piszczek is more offensive friendly, he can assist or even score - in Polish league he played even as a forward! Then as a RM, now - RB.
But Poland team is not Borussia D. - he has more defensive role than he has in Dortmund.
When it comes to Perquis, he als has a little chance to score - after corners, free kicks. But what is more he should get some RB points IMO.

      I go with Perquis

Latest rumors from the UEFA HQ suggest that there has been a big debate within the Council regarding the functioning of the Cups. One of the reasons is believed to be Parmanista questioning the integrity with which the FFS Champions League was held in 2011/12.

Daily Mail reported one of them saying "The probability of the only organizer winning the Cup was 1/32 and you want me to believe there were no bribes involved along the way. I won't name him but let's see how far his team gets this Cup."

Hazard had two good seasons in a half-decent French side and was on the bench of the Belgium team up to last week, Marin has proven absolutely nothing and Hulk is 3 years older than Carroll (so no wonder he has achieved more).

I do not say that Liverpool made good deals with those 3, but dont forget that they sold El Nino to the same Che club that you praise for 50m.
So looking at it, Liv spent 0 to get those 3 in (and Nino out) while Che spent 140m to get Nino, Hulk, Hasard and Marin in. No wonder Che looks better!!!

Unfortunately all the respected people in football that have actually watched Hazard & Marin would not even compare them to Henderson & Downing!

You are right, Carroll is 3 years younger than Hulk, lets see if Carroll can manage to achieve the same success in the next 3 years

Chelsea are acting like a kid playing Fifa, buying lots of attacking players who might be good (Torres, Hulk, Marin, Hazard) but haven't performed outside their own leagues and have similar positions. I sense at least a few more expensive benchwarmers.

what are you talking about? Hulk is Brazilian and has been successful in Japan & Portugal. Hazard is Belgian and has succeeded in France. Marin may not have played outside Germany but their league is comparable to the English league and you don't see many English players leaving that.

      Typical little Englander type attitude

Guess what, I am not English. You forget that Henderson and Carroll are very young. I do not know why one player must succeed in Japan or France to be a success in the PL. If anything, it is more risky.
Gervinho was at par level with Hazard the season when Lille won the league. Chamakh was a superstar for Bordeaux. So being a foreigner succeeding in France means absolutely nothing.

As for Hulk, I just said he has done very well, but is not 23 anymore. So you can not compare him to a target striker in his low 20s (target strikers tend to pick up older).

And again, praising a club for signing 1 flop, and 3 big names players who have proven nothing in PL for 140m is a bit easy.

I am not praising Chelsea or criticizing Liverpool. I am just saying that Marin, Hazard & Hulk have all proved all lot. This view that players have to have done it in the premier league is ludicrous. Too many premier league fans hold it in far too high a regard, and are always talking down foreign leagues. We had the same about Eredivisie players coming over to the premier league, but guess what, the likes of Suarez, Tiote, Dembele have all come in with immediate success

i guess there is one thing these players may have top adapt to when they come to the premier league, they need to get ready for 'kick & rush', tactically deficient and less technical play.

And I am saying they have proven very little for 90m. None of them were regular starters in their national teams up to last week (for Hulk and Hazard, Marin being way behind).
I do not look down at 'lower' leagues, but one has to say that the Spanish and English leagues are a step further to the Dutch or French divisions. As such, it is normal to look at their stats at international level.

Having said that, I am very excited and happy to see Hazard and Hulk joining the Pl - no English fans would say the contrary. I still think Marin will be a bench warmer the first season though.

it doesn't matter what league someone plays in, you can still see how good a player they are.

International stats aren't the whole picture. The Brazil attack is the most difficult attack in the world to get into. Belgium also have an excellent crop of players. Marin has quite a few caps, but he plays for one of the best teams in the world.

If Perisic start tomorrow(hepefully he will) i might get him as diferencial to mandzukic/jelavic

his price is only 5.0 and he is fanatstic player

in season 2010/11 when he was playing for Club Brugge he scored 22 goals and delivered 10 assist in 46 games

In Borrusia Dourtmund he didnt play much and he always came off bench but he still scored 9 goals and deliver 6 assist in 38 games

Bilic said that he prolly is ahead of Kranjcar and Rakitic at this moment and i got a feel that he will start

do not get him in your teams if you are not willing to take a risk

Care to shed some more light on this situation, CRUSHER and also pompeyfan?

Is the likely scenario that only one of RVP and Huntelaar can start? In that case, is the only properly nailed on Dutch attacker Arjen Robben? Because I read somewhere that Sneijder picked up an injury?

        1. CRUSHER
          • 14 Years

Sneijder should be fine for the denmark game, Van Marwijk isn't too worried about it anyway. Bouma didn't break anything, just has a painful jaw and it looks like Mathijsen will hopefully be back too in time.
The offensive situation, well, it seems liek Huntelaar thinks he won't be playing, mostly because it's widely assumed that our last game is how we'll most likely be lining up at the euro's too (so Robben Sneijder Afellay and RVP). Huntelaar will then be brought on if we need a goal I suppose.
The whole RVP/Huntelaar discussion is interesting, but ultimately it's about tactics. When you have Robben, you simply have to play him. When he's on the right though, he'll always come inside. Afellay, who pretty much always plays under Van Marwijk, goes for the combination rather than the cross/assist. So both wide men work, or should work, better with RVP than with Huntelaar, as Huntelaar relies on chances others create for him. He's very good at scoring those, but he won't get the chances in the current set up, which is why RVP will most likely play.

No idea what he costs, if he's a mid or striker on the games, so whether or not he's the best pick I wouldn't know. Van Marwijk is a big Afellay fan though. Problem is partly his fitness, he hasn't played much due to his injury, so while I think he'll start, he won't play 90 minutes, especially not with the competiton for the offensive spots that we have. Kuyt, Narsingh, RVP moving over to make room for Huntelaar, even VDV can all play there.
We're playing Northern Ireland on saturday, most people assume we'll play whoever is first choice in that game, so that should settle the KJH/RVP debate and the left back and left wing discussions.

Can someone help me to clear up a few quibbles with the Fantasy Pro site, please?

How do the transfers work? I'm chairman, but when I set the auction up I wasn't asked when I wanted the transfer window(s) to be. Can I do this?

I the first round of auction during the transfer window (ie not the setting-up-your-team auction) you can only bid on players not in anyone's squad, right? And I assume who you want to remove from your squad for the new player when bidding? Do you get the funds you bought the incumbent player with? (Say I have a transfer budget of 5m and in the window I want to sell Jack Buckland who I bought for 25m, could I bid 30m for a new keeper?)

    Hope that makes sense. Ta.

I think it'll happen. Tried to gets odds from bookies yesterday for it, but they wouldn't give me any odds for it.

Nope. But they said it's because he's agreed terms with Swansea, so have closed the market. Shame as decent odds could've been had I reckon, as he's so close to joining Swansea.

I see. Agreeing terms with one club doesn’t mean anything though these days, I’m sure his agent starting working overtime once he heard Rodgers was on his bike to Anfield. I think he would fit in quite well there to be honest, exactly what the new manager wants for his new club.
