Euro 2012

Euro 2012 – Final Analysis – Group B

Yesterday saw us begin our group-by-group run down of the last few weeks’ worth of friendly action as Friday’s kick-off edges ever-closer. Having run the rule over Group A, we turn our attentions to Group B. Assessing the four candidates’ recent form, injuries worries and lineups, we reflect on their respective performances and look for potential signs of starting XIs prior to Holland and Denmark getting the group underway at 5pm next Saturday.

Denmark

The Danes played just two friendlies as part of their build-up to the Euros. Morten Olsen’s men slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Brazil before seeing off Australia 2-0 in front of their own fans in their final warm-up match last Saturday.

Nicklas Bendtner got the ball rolling by grabbing the consolation against the Brazilians on May 26, with midfielder Niki Zimling atoning for an earlier own goal by providing the assist. Intriguingly, Daniel Agger looks to be on penalties – he grabbed the opener in the Australia game after being felled in the box, while another centre-half, Andreas Bjelland, notched the second after a scramble in the box. Priced at 5.5, Agger’s spot-kick duties have certainly heightened his appeal in the McDonald’s game – he is the second most popular Danish player with 12.9% ownership but given the calibre of his three group opponents, there is surely better value elsewhere.

Likely Lineup
With Thomas Sorensen ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury, Stephan Andersen has been chosen ahead of Man United’s Anders Lindegaard as the Danes number one over– priced at 4.0 in the McDonald’s game, he is the cheapest nailed-on stopper of any of the participants. Elsewhere in the backline, the only question mark surrounds Agger’s likely partner at centre-half; having started both those recent friendlies, Simon Kjaer is favourite, though Bjelland did his chances no harm by notching against Australia. Perhaps the only other question mark is in midfield, where Christian Poulsen and William Kvist will vie for a slot alongside Christian Eriksen and Zimling in Olsen’s favoured 4-3-3 formation.

Likely Starting XI: Andersen; Jacobsen, Kjaer, Agger, S Poulsen; Zimling, Kvist, Eriksen; Rommedahl, Bendtner, Krohn-Deli.

Germany

Similar to Denmark, Joachim Low’s side have also played just two recent friendlies. The Germany boss rested all his Bayern Munich contingent against Switzerland after their Champions League exertions and watched on as his charges slumped to a 5-3 defeat, while a 2-0 triumph over Israel was largely uninspiring.

Mats Hummels, Andreas Schurrle and Marco Reus all netted in the defeat against Switzerland but it’s far from certain any of the trio will feature when the Germans kick off their campaign against Portugal on Saturday. Schurrle continued his impressive form by climbing off the bench to notch the second against Israel – Mario Gomez grabbed the opener, with Thomas Muller providing the assist.

Likely Lineup
There are a couple of issues at the back for Low to iron out. Although Philipp Lahm is nailed-on, the Germany boss is still unsure over which flank he favours him on – if Lahm plays on the left, Jerome Boateng looks likely to earn a start on the opposite side, while Lahm on the right would afford Marcel Schmelzer a chance in the first XI. Both Boateng and Schmelzer started a game apiece in those friendlies, suggesting neither is certain of a place in the side. A starting place for Schmelzer would be ideal for Fantasy managers; priced at 6.0 in the McDonald’s game, he is the cheapest player available in the German backline – Boateng is 6.5 but has an 11.6% ownership, despite the uncertainty surrounding his starting place. At centre-half, Mats Hummels and Per Mertesacker will battle for a place alongside Holger Badstuber – at 6.5, the latter is the cheaper of the two by 0.5 in the McDonald’s game.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has failed to feature in either of the recent friendlies due to injury but is reported to have returned to training and is expected to be ready for the Portuguese game. Up front, it’s the million dollar question: Miroslav Klose or Mario Gomez? It’s anyone’s guess, really, but Klose’s experience in big tournaments could well see him get the nod.

Likely Starting XI: Neuer; Boateng, Mertesacker, Badstuber, Lahm; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Muller, Ozil, Podolski; Klose.

Holland

The Dutch played four friendlies over the past few weeks, including a game against Bayern Munich. Bert Van Marwijk’s decision to field a weakened backline saw his side downed 3-2 by the Bundesliga runners-up, while a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bulgaria was their first at home in 19 matches. More encouragingly, they recorded a couple of wins and clean sheets in the other two games, with Slovakia and Northern Ireland beaten 2-0 and 6-0 respectively.

In the Bayern game, Jan Klass Huntelaar and Luciano Narsingh grabbed the goals, with Dirk Kuyt and Rafael Van der Vaart providing the assists. Van der Vaart also found the net in the win over Slovakia, with the other Dutch goal coming courtesy of an opposition player. Wesley Sneijder provided an assist for Robin Van Persie’s consolation against Bulgaria before the Dutch ran riot against a weakened Northern Ireland; Van Persie grabbed a brace and pair of assists, Sniejder returned a goal and assist, while Ibrahim Afellay also scored twice and picked up an assist – priced at just 6.5 in the McDonald’s game, he looks an intriguing proposition, with a mere 5.7% ownership.

Likely Lineup
At the back, Van Marwijk is sweating on the fitness of Joris Mathijsen. The centre-half was forced off after just 19 minutes of the Bulgaria match but is reported to be on the verge of returning to full fitness – Wilfred Bouma and Ron Vlaar have each been handed a start apiece in Mathijsen’s absence. Jetro Willems looks to have edged ahead of Stijn Shaars for the left-back position; he has started three of the four friendlies in the absence of first-choice Erik Pieters and, at 5.0 in the McDonald’s game, offers the cheapest possible route into Holland’s backline.

Mark Van Bommel is nailed-on in the double-pivot, though Rafael Van der Vaart could come into contention if Van Marwijk opts for a more creative presence than Nigel De Jong to play alongside his son-in-law in front of the back-four. Van der Vaart’s versatility is likely to see him afforded game time as an impact sub further up the pitch, though – with two of the three attacking midfield slots nailed-on, it’s a battle between Dirk Kuyt and Afellay as to who starts on the left. Afellay has begun the last two, however, and looks to be in the driving seat. Robin Van Persie will lead the line, after Jan Klass Huntelaar revealed he is Van Marwijk’s second choice forward ahead of the opener against Denmark.

Likely Starting XI: Stekelenburg; Van der Wiel, Heitinga, Mathijsen, Willems; Van Bommel, De Jong; Robben, Sneijder, Afellay; Van Persie

Portugal

It’s fair to say that Portugal have been anything but impressive over their recent couple of friendlies. Paulo Bento’s side warmed up for their Group B opener against Germany with a goalless draw against Macedonia and a 3-1 home defeat by Turkey.

Cristiano Ronaldo set up Nani for the consolation against Turkey but failed to make his spot-kick duties pay, by missing another penalty in the defeat. Portugal have now chalked up just one victory in their last six matches and, despite returning three clean sheets over those games, look unlikely to replicate their defensive resilience against the Germans and the Dutch.

Likely Lineup
Bento tinkered with his starting XI for the Turkey game by making six changes to his side but, in all likelihood, the only real question is who leads the line for Portugal. The backline virtually picks itself, as does the midfield three, while Ronaldo and Nani will flank either Hugo Almeida or Helder Postiga up top; Almeida comes in at 7.5 in the McDonald’s game, 1.0 less than Postiga, though with 1% and 0.3% ownership respectively, either player offers a differential option should they manage to nail down a slot in the starting XI. Almeida came on for Postiga just after the hour mark against Macedonia and started the Turkey game, suggesting he may be Bento’s favoured frontman.

Likely Starting XI: Patricio; Pereira, Pepe, Alves, Coentrao; Moutinho, Veloso, Meireles; Nani, Almeida, Ronaldo.

Which 4 of these defenders would you go with in the Sun Dreamteam game?

    Lescott (2.5), Debuchy (3.0), Bonucci (2.5), Zhirkov (2.5), S Papa (1.0), Kadlec (2.5), Perquis (2.0)

Would you rather Selassie or a Greek defender (S Papa)?

General concensus seems to be that the Czechs are a better team, but the Greek's are a better shout for clean sheets? So, S Papa?

    Can someone confirm this:

You should pick players who play first, because you can substitute all 4 subs throughout a group stage. Is that right? With no consequence??

Also, you can change your captain each day? And the double points lie with whoever you settle with?

Right here's my team.. which i'm still not happy with.

    Chalkias, Given
    Kadlec, Zhirkov, Debuchy, Perquis, Alba
    Ozil, Mandzukic, Shirokov, Kallstrom, Affelay
    Lewandowski, van Persie, Benzema

Not sure about Affelay I think there's too strong a chance of Kuyt getting the nod ahead but the value in it is difficult to resist.
Not too happy with Kallstrom either but there's very little available for £6m and under.

    Any suggestions?

Holland (Who got the keys to Benzema?) will be going into the euros with a revolutionary new strategy. A lot of teams are testing out using different players and tactics for the two managers, but Holland are taking it to a new level. While China Mag spends hours on his team, researching all the players and tweaking his line-up on an hourly basis, In Like Flynn has taken a more relaxed approach of registering his team a few weeks ago, then disappearing off the face of the earth! Let's hope that he actually set up a team, and that team doesn't include huntelaar!!

Sweden are unlikely to keep any clean sheets

I don't like gambling on penalties so I don't like kadlec myself (but many people do)

I agree on Sweden, I was on Given for this version for ages but I am not convinced he will play as he hasn't trained for two days.. Any other suggestions in that price range from group B, C or D for 1 week.. I don't see any better that's the problem..

Defence is lightweight, but that's how you wanted it - only two + keeper need to produce, so you have a chance.
Not too keen on iniesta, but you propably have him as a punt/differential/gut feeling so everything looks good.

TW!! Would you care to commment on my auction team on the previous page. Its my first (and only) effort, so i have no idea how it measures up.

It is defense heavy as a deliberate tactic, considering that everyone was going to bid big for the big name attackers.

        you've got a decent team.

usually its a tad easier when you pick 15, i'll admit this starting XI is tough. you'll need to decide if you wanna go 442 or 433. shame you don't have more funds as podolski is available. i'm honestly avoiding him as i can afford to lose a bid on him and miss out on other attackers at the same time cuz you only get 11 players! though i'm afraid he'll slip through the cracks and go for cheap somehow...

all italian and croatian forwards plus nani are available which are all tempting me, still haven't made my mind up though...

        my team right now:

        casillas
        johnson ? ? ?

Bored so there is my analysis to help with player picks:

    Group a: Weakest group
Poland vs. Greece- Greece very defensive team, Poland also but advantage as host nation. I predict a low score of 1:0 or 0:0 or 1:1 or 0:1 Cheap defensive player from these teams’ best with the exception of ledanwoski

Russia vs Czech Republic - Russia looks solid defensively or strong at the back... I am thinking 1:0 or 2:0 Russia. Defence, midfield good areas to invest for Russia as for the Czech maybe cheap defensive assets but don’t expect much.

Group b: The group of death
Nederland’s vs. Denmark- Possibly the best fixture of the all round- load up on the duchies attack and midfield they are on fire as for the Danes... stay away is my advice 3-1 most likely score

Germany vs. Portugal- Germany one of the favourites looks very dangerous in attack but weak in defence, as for Portugal they seem fallible at the back but capable of an upset and they have Renaldo... Players to get German midfield and attackers and for Portugal Renaldo only. Predicted score 3:2

Group c: The group of past champions
Spain vs. Italy. Spain has been playing well whilst Italy have been shocking both on field and off field. I fear that Italian coach will revert back to the old ways defend defend defend counter. I predict a low scoring game and maybe even a 1:0 Italy upset or 1:0 Spain triumph. I recommend staying away from these 2 teams altogether

Croatians vs Ireland: these 2 teams need to win as this is their easiest game. Ireland very strong defensively but not much going in attack, Croatia stronger in attack and average in defence... Maybe Irish defence and Croatian attack/defence. Both set of teams have cheap players so it is likely you end up with 2 or 3 of them but once again don’t expect too much... Prediction 1:0 Croatia

Group D: The group of no return (the players you play will not be able to be changed so pick the certain ones!!!
France vs. England: this one will be close. France has much better attack especially without Mr. Rooney but England has the better defence... My advice maybe France attack or English defence but both risky Prediction 2:1 France

Ukraine vs. Sweden: these 2 teams need to go for it draws not good enough as this is their easy game, expect high scoring game as both defences look weaker than attacks. Ukraine players have been all sick and maybe weak. Recommendation Swedish attacking players and maybe Ukraine attackers Prediction 3:2 Sweden

nice analysis Nimbin and agree with a lot of it, some good thoghts in there

I disagree on avoiding Spain though.. Think you need to get one attacker got the first GW

Yes i think a spain attacker would be allright, i am just thinking that Italy will shut the shop up, they have defending in their genes but i could be completly wrong but i am thinking a replay of Inter milan vs barcelona game of a couple of years ago...

Funny how people only remember the second leg.
In first game Inter was clearly better than barca and deserved win.
Then second game started, barca (once again) got some help from referee and played man down for last 60-70 mins(?).
What should have they done - try to win second game too?

I am not critisizing inter, they did what they had to do. I dont think they were better than barca in any of the games but played the perfect game plan. Can italy do it to spain again, i dont think so but they have done it many times before....

In 1982 & 2006 Italian football was also rocked by betting scandals and match fixing. Just like now. Guess what? They won the World Cup in both those years.

The first game will be crucial.

Italy flopping is very possible. they are in disarray. I would not be surprised. I can see balletolli being sent off in one game or walking off 🙂 I think croatia and ireland will fight for second spot with italy too negative and only getting draws at best

while gomez is class, all those misses in the champions league final could hurt his chance to start...

you wouldn't consider giving him the armband even though you can swap the armband to someone else if he fails? if you think he'll get a hattrick along the way then you captain him, if he does great, if not you move to your next captain, tahts the beauty of these rules

im actually considering diving in fully on van der Wiel. The more i think about it, the more id rather get a cs AND a little shot at attacking points and spend the 7.0

I think the dutch have the best chance at a CS that are not heavily owned by everyone.

So there is potential for a great source of points to almost call your own!

both gk's in doubt. akinfeev is injured i think and sounds like he will at least not play the first game and i think linde is second choice

not sure if abte is nailed on, get .5 and stretch to debuchy from france

olsson to maniatis, sounds like he plays in mf and is 4.0 for greece which is better than a swedish defender who plays on the last day

i would consider downgrading abate to perquis and then upgrading linde to cech, szczesny or given

actually go aninfeev to malafeev for the first gw and then use that .5 with the exra .5 you said you had and upgrade linde to lloris or hart

also lescott is the same price as debuchy so you could get him instead

                thank you!

why do you think he's better than yarm though?

and does he have the stomach bug too? just worries me if a lot of them have the stomach bug even if he doesn't that they wont play as well....

main reason why i get him in instaed of yarmolenko is massive diferential and he dosn't have stomach bug i think

i think he is better fanatsy prospect than Yarmolenko...it's just my feeling

give me a sec to find out how manny goals he scored in qualifications for ukraine
