Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Matchday One, Day Four

Zlatan Ibrahimovic gets amongst the goals but it’s Andrei Shevchenko who steals the headlines by bagging a brace as Ukraine see off Sweden. England and France play out a stalemate earlier in the day, with Man City pair Joleon Lescott and Samir Nasri both finding the net as Laurent Blanc’s side extend their unbeaten run to 22 games:

England 1 France 1
Roy Hodgson saw his side concede for the first time since taking charge but, despite France’s domination, managed to scrape thanks to a resilient defensive display. Joleon Lescott will no doubt be on plenty Fantasy radars after his opener against Laurent Blanc’s side – priced at 5.5 in the McDonald’s game, he offers the cheapest route into England’s backline ahead of the clashes with Sweden and Ukraine.

Hodgson’s decision to opt for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left of midfield instead of Stewart Downing will also have Fantasy managers on alert. Priced at 6.0 in the McDonald’s game and with just 2.8% ownership, the Arsenal youngster is an intriguing proposition but it’s perhaps debatable whether he will keep his starting role when Wayne Rooney’s suspension finishes ahead of Matchday 3. There’s every chance Rooney could be partnered by Danny Welbeck up front for the game against Ukraine, with Ashley Young possibly moving out to the left at Oxlade-Chamberlain’s expense. England’s midfield work-rate helped Steven Gerrard, James Milner and Scott Parker all pick up an extra point apiece due to the recovered balls rule, with the Liverpool skipper’s assist for Lescott’s goal helping him to a six point return.

Laurent Blanc’s starting XI was as expected. Mathieu Debuchy got the nod at right-back, while Alou Diarra started in the defensive central midfield role due to Yann M’Vila’s recent injury. The latter was fit enough to be handed a role on the bench, however, suggesting he may well come into contention for Friday’s showdown with Ukraine.

Elsewhere, Samir Nasri was the standout Fantasy performer in Blanc’s front three. Coming in at 8.5 in the McDonald’s game, the City man is 1.0 cheaper than both Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery and has just 6.8% ownership – his goal just before half-time helped him to an eight point haul, while Ribery returned five points for providing the assist. Nasri also created eight goalscoring opportunities for his team mates – more than any French player – while Benzema managed six attempts on goal; encouraging for his Fantasy owners ahead of the upcoming couple of matches.

Ukraine 2 Sweden 1
The later game followed the script of the previous three days. All four of the 7.45pm kick-offs in Matchday 1 resulted in victories, whereas three of the four early matches produced draws, with teams a little more tentative in the group openers. Oleg Blokhin’s only surprise was the selection of Andrei Shevchenko up front – the former Milan man had started the last three friendlies on the bench and was hampered with injuries earlier in the year. Shevchenko vindicated his manager’s decision by inspiring the co-hosts’ comeback and grabbing both his side’s goals – priced at 7.0 and with a mere 2.2% ownership he proved an inspired Matchday 1 choice, with a 10 point return showing we should never write him off.

Site favourites Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka also played their part, providing an assist apiece. The latter also looked a lively goal threat and managed five attempts at goal; priced at 5.5 compared to Yarmolenko’s 7.0, he’s a decent mid-price alternative for those Fantasy managers reluctant to splash the cash and, with 0.9% ownership, he also has a share of set-piece duties in the bag.

Erik Hamren picked Andreas Granqvist ahead of Jonas Olsson in the heart of Sweden’s defence, with Martin Olsson slotting in at left-back. Both the latter and Granqvist come in at 4.0 in the McDonald’s game but with a single clean sheet in their last nine, the Swedes will hardly inspire confidence in Fantasy managers ahead of the remaining two games.

Rasmus Elm was handed a slot in central midfield, while Ola Toivonen – who had played up front in the recent friendly win over Serbia – moved to the left flank after Markus Rosenberg recovered from injury to lead the line. Kim Kallstrom rewarded his 2.7% owners by providing the assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener and the Milan man can consider himself unlucky to be on the losing side after a strong performance – he managed four goal attempts and created four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates. With Sweden’s schedule now looking far from favourable, though, 8.0 priced Ibrahimovic’s 24.6% of owners have a tricky decision to make, with many deciding to wield wildcards in order to freshen up their frontlines ahead of the Matchday 2 kick-off later on today.

Is Motta ahead of Montolivo now in the Italy starting XI?

I'm unsure whether to get a French defender or two attacking players, opinions please?

He's the defender I'd keep if I did, which means only having one of Nasri, Benzema, Ribery.

I can see the logic behind because he's 1m cheaper than Ribery but I have a feeling Ribery might contribute more than him in the next two matches.

Yeah, I don't know if he is that much better, and if he is it necessarily means him getting the points rather than making the space/opportunities for Benzema & Nasri.

I'm getting the impression that people are doubting Afellay will start the next game, any particular reason for this? Still quite like him as a cheap way into the Dutch attack.

Netherlands failed to score against Denmark and Afellay is apparently the weakest link in the Dutch attack. I beg to differ though.

He got taken off early and they looked poor up front in terms of finishing so may switch things up. Certain people are nailed on so won't be sacrificed. He's not one of those people.

Cheers, thought he looked ok personally and wasn't to blame for the lack of goals but I accept he's the obvious candidate to drop if they want to change things up. Wasn't sure if this was just speculation round here or if there'd been something more solid in the media somewhere. Probably not worth the risk, thanks guys.

He didn't do well in fantasy terms, not creating anything but then that was true of all the Dutch attack. He was taken off during the game and the easy option to replace if the coach thinks change is needed, as RVP, Sneidjer and Robben are all nailed on.

Zonal marking has Afellay making a significant contribution to the build up play and the lack of goals as being despite him rather than because of him:
      http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/06/09/denmark-1-0-holland-tactics/

I think they're more likely to drop De-Jong in favour of VDV for a more creative and attacking presence at the back of midfield.

Not sure about Perquis and Maniatis but I can see the logic behind due to their price tag. I wouldn't suggest Benzema and Young to Silva and Nasri. Benzema will rack up maybe a rampage next two games. England are very defensively disciplined in most games which was why Benzema didn't make into the scoresheet but I expect him to next rounds.

I'd prefer to have Benzema, Young and Nasri together due to their fixtures. I'd pick Silva if he is a midfielder but unfortunately he's not so it's better to invest in proper forward.

I've seen a lot of RMTs with Zhirkov, Chalkias and Maniatis, but very few with Malafeev.

I've also seen the combination of Andersen + Chalkias a lot Rather than picking a strong keeper.

    Have I missed something?

    Considering a defence of:

    Malafeev, Andersen

    Lescott, 2 of Bonucci / Alba / Debouchy and 2 of M Olsson / Maniatis / Strinic

Because they only play on the 2nd day it's ok to take a gamble on their players, with the players you have concrete faith coming in the 3rd/4th day.

I expect a tight game, so I'd at least want a defender.

Yeah excellent point on the tightness of the game. I wouldn't be investing in Italy attack personally either.

So whos sticking if their captain gets 6 points today?

Personally happy to leave it to Benzema last day, so will risk it AGAIN!

Nope, I will always switch from 6.
I started with a 6 pointer and ended up with a 6 pointer this week, but it was fun gambling.

What are your feelings about Germany's line- for next matches?

I've read on a comment yesterday that there's a possibility that Muller and Podolski could be replaced because they'e not used to play with Gomez...

By that logic then surely Klose could come in instead of Gomez... I certainly hope so cause I'm not Wildcarding this week like everyone else seems to be and I'm stuck with Klose. However I'm expect the same starting 11 for Germany.

Huh? Why wouldn't Thomas Müller be used to playing with his Bayern team-mate Gómez?

Same line-up, I reckon, with the possible exception of Kroos for Schweinsteiger, who looked desperately short of match fitness against the Netherlands and might not have the energy for three group games in quick succession.

I wouldn't pick Podolski, if I were Löw, as he's playing with the lack of interest of someone who has already got the big transfer he was looking for, but Löw will stay loyal to him. Schürrle could be a early substitute if things don't go well.

Right then, not wasting any more time on this because I had such a bad first gameweek it really isn't worth it, my lineup bar any last minute injuries/team news:

    Chalkias, Rui Patricio
Berezutski, Bonucci, Jordi Alba, Debuchy, Lescott
    Schweinsteiger, Shirikov, Fabregas, Zimling, Young
    Cassano, Lewandowski, Benzema

Can't say I'm particularly happy with it but hey ho.

That is one strong defence, better hope there are more cleansheets this round!
I like it apart from Schweinsteiger and R.Patricio plus would rather downgrade a defender and upgrade Zimling.

Which front 8 do you prefer
    Not wildcarding hence relatively weak

    A) Shirokov Young Afellay Ozil Mandzukic
    Benzema Silva Lewa

    OR

    B) Shirokov Ribery Pilar Fabregas Mandzukic
    RVP Cron Lewa

I pulled the trigger on my WC last night - thoughts guys? Mostly for reassurance after my captain-nightmare in GW1 (Young 🙁 ):

    Andersen/Hart
    Gebre Selassie/Manatis/Alba/Lescott/Strinic
    Giaccherini/Dzageov/Iniesta(3)/Mandy/Nasri
    Benzema(4)/CR7(2)/Kerzhakov(1)

Captain choices per gameday in parenthesis...

    Wildcard team nearly complete:

    Chalkias / Andersen

    Bonucci / Lescott / Selassie / Perquis / Maniatis

    Iniesta / Fabregas / Nasri / Dzagoev / Pilar

    Ronaldo / Benzema / Cassano

Thinking maybe Dzagoev > Shirokov to upgrade GK?

I ain't feeling this whole wildcard now thing. Alba, Debuchy, Ozil, Sneijder, Iniesta and Benzema will all get big points in the next game, and I really doubt that Mandzukic and Pilar will continue to rack up points. The only one who tempts me is Dzagoev, but I've already got Shirokov, and he'll probably be more consistent.

Also, what did the locals here get for GW1? I got 51pts, and I'll take that. AND ANOTHER THING, why has Mandzukic kept the 2 goals when one of them was an own goal?

      I got 51 too.

He kept the goal because I had Given and it would have made my score lower if they took it off him.

58pts with Andersen's 7pts stuck on the bench due to Sir Chesney!

Pretty sure the slo mo goal line camera angle shows the ball was heading into the far corner before it hit givens head.
