Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Matchday Two – Day Four

With uncertainty surrounding his starting role this evening, Fernando Torres had just 4% of the votes in the Matchday 2, Day 3 Captain Poll heading into the match with Republic of Ireland. A double from El Nino handed those Fantasy managers who gave him the armband a 20 point return, though it was David Silva who stole the show with a goal and two assists in the 4-0 rout:

Andres Iniesta was the runaway winner of the Captain Poll with 42% of the votes cast but, somewhat surprisingly, has not been awarded an assist for his role in Silva’s first goal. The below quote from the McDonald’s site would suggest Iniesta should have been handed the assist after Shay Given parried his effort into Silva’s path – perhaps the fact that Silva had a couple of touches before netting has gone against the Barcelona man.

An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.

This evening’s early kick-off saw the forwards draw a blank in the McDonald’s game. Mario Mandzukic’s classification as a midfielder helped the Croatian to a 14 point armband haul after he grabbed the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Italy, while the Azzurri’s Andrea Pirlo picked up a 16 point captaincy return due to his free kick opener and eight recovered balls. After disappointment for many this evening, it’s stick or twist time again tomorrow, then…

Tournament co-hosts Ukraine will be seeking their second Group D win in the early kick-off against France and Andriy Shevchenko offers a decent differential candidate, with an ownership of less than 5% in the McDonald’s game. The skipper arrives on the back of his double against Sweden, while Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka both picked up assists in the 2-1 win over Erik Hamren’s men, with the latter also firing five shots at goal.

For Laurent Blanc’s side, the front three are the main protagonists. Samir Nasri grabbed a goal and created eight goalscoring opportunities against England, Franck Ribery provided his team mates with six chances to find the net and resultantly picked up an assist, while Karim Benzema had six shots against Roy Hodgson’s side.

England and Sweden square up in the later encounter, with the former having conceded just once in three games under their new manager. For England, Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck are likely to carry the threat up front, though Steven Gerrard’s set-piece duties and likely points for recovered balls – given his side’s tactics – makes the Liverpool man another armband alternative.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the obvious captaincy choice for the Swedes – despite returning a single goal in his opener, he had four shots and provided four goalscoring chances against Ukraine. Seb Larsson and Kim Kallstrom’s creativity could see them both play a part as the Swedes attempt to hand Hodgson his first defeat in charge of the national side, though doubts remain over who will lead the line, with Markus Rosenberg, Ola Tiovonen and Johan Elmander all vying for the lone striker role.

Not great candidates but definitely give it to either of these who you think can score a clean sheet.

I'm a bit surprised people are asking whether to swap captaincies from Iniesta or not. Surely it's obvious that you'll want to give yourself a chance of a higher score when it's very little risk you lose more than one point on it?

Silva passed directly to Fabregas who took a touch or two and then struck it in. Definite assist.

Iniesta hit a shot and Given punched it out. Silva collected but did not shoot immediately. Theoretically thsi could be the bookend of the first phase of the attack. The subsequent touches from Silva could be interpreted as a "dribble" and a new phase of attack before he slid it home. IMO it's baseless though, this was an assist and to all intents and purposes an assist by the terms and conditions outline in the Rules section itself.

In terms of the Iniesta assist, is that it!? Is it definitely not going to be awarded now? Have we had any other high profile examples of dubious assists with any late decisions.

Mandzukic case is probably the nearest I can think of and the goal was awarded almost immediately and stuck.

McGeady is pretty bad but he gives an outlet and a brilliant work rate, never been Coleman's biggest fan but should definitely be in the squad, rotating. Would agree that all of them deserve to be in the squad but important not to have a full revamp to maintain the spirit and cohesion between the players.

For sure. It's time to move on, Keane and Duff are no longer the best in their positions, terrific servants over the years but have to accept a squad role from now on. Not sure Trap will do it to Keane though, huge fan of his.

Yeah, it's funny because of the too I think Duff offers more. Keane is well past it now but Trap won't axe him. They've both been great for us but there comes a time for all players to step back and let the next generation through.

cr7 is the game's worst disappointment ever I reckon, don't have any more patience 4 the guy and will defo kick him out... the question is who 2 buy instead (Shrek?)

I have no striker in mine. It's the 5-5-0 (otherwise known as the Scotland).

Not a bad chance of some goals tomorrow in the Ukraine v France game, either way, neither defense is the most resilient...

Fantasy Football... oh dear. I'm needing England to concede 🙁

Still, Young's hattrick will help us win 🙂

I am happy for Lescott to get me nothing if Young(c) does that.

Young or Nas for me... looking like Young though. He can't get any worse than last time out.... can he?

i was thinking that earlier. i got a big tv last month not thinking that it would feel like i've invited a full size adrian chiles into my living room. I should have waited until after the Euros were finished

i thought he was a bit out of order with what he was saying to be honest. Too much time spent with United I think. RCA hit on it earlier, some of us come from countries who have football teams that are not the best, we support them all the same with realistic expectation but with hope that maybe something special can happen every so often. Unfortunately for Ireland they played the World champions who were in the mood tonight. yes they made mistakes but that comes through pressure. the game is all about human error. Keane sits there saying its not good enough, Irish fans want to see Ireland winning etc, No doubt so did the Ipswich fans when he was in charge. the guy is a tool as far as i am concerned, When Spain beat us in qualifying it wasnt great but you kind of expected it to happen. You hope but then the realisation hits home. We were just not good enough and over the past few years virtually no-one has been against the Spanish. All ranted out now.

Debuchy, Konoplyanka, & Lescott on bench.

Shall I swap them all in for Cassano, Shirokov and Lewandowski (2, 2 & 1) or just leave the frenchman on the bench ?

Down to third in my ML but green arrows otherwise. 48 with Lescott, Debuchy and Benzema to play. 5,992 overall rank. Happy as i have zero spanish coverage. Mandy cap, stick or twist? I’m thinking 14 is good enough and he saved my gw again.
