Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Matchday Two – Day Four

With uncertainty surrounding his starting role this evening, Fernando Torres had just 4% of the votes in the Matchday 2, Day 3 Captain Poll heading into the match with Republic of Ireland. A double from El Nino handed those Fantasy managers who gave him the armband a 20 point return, though it was David Silva who stole the show with a goal and two assists in the 4-0 rout:

Andres Iniesta was the runaway winner of the Captain Poll with 42% of the votes cast but, somewhat surprisingly, has not been awarded an assist for his role in Silva’s first goal. The below quote from the McDonald’s site would suggest Iniesta should have been handed the assist after Shay Given parried his effort into Silva’s path – perhaps the fact that Silva had a couple of touches before netting has gone against the Barcelona man.

An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.

This evening’s early kick-off saw the forwards draw a blank in the McDonald’s game. Mario Mandzukic’s classification as a midfielder helped the Croatian to a 14 point armband haul after he grabbed the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Italy, while the Azzurri’s Andrea Pirlo picked up a 16 point captaincy return due to his free kick opener and eight recovered balls. After disappointment for many this evening, it’s stick or twist time again tomorrow, then…

Tournament co-hosts Ukraine will be seeking their second Group D win in the early kick-off against France and Andriy Shevchenko offers a decent differential candidate, with an ownership of less than 5% in the McDonald’s game. The skipper arrives on the back of his double against Sweden, while Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka both picked up assists in the 2-1 win over Erik Hamren’s men, with the latter also firing five shots at goal.

For Laurent Blanc’s side, the front three are the main protagonists. Samir Nasri grabbed a goal and created eight goalscoring opportunities against England, Franck Ribery provided his team mates with six chances to find the net and resultantly picked up an assist, while Karim Benzema had six shots against Roy Hodgson’s side.

England and Sweden square up in the later encounter, with the former having conceded just once in three games under their new manager. For England, Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck are likely to carry the threat up front, though Steven Gerrard’s set-piece duties and likely points for recovered balls – given his side’s tactics – makes the Liverpool man another armband alternative.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the obvious captaincy choice for the Swedes – despite returning a single goal in his opener, he had four shots and provided four goalscoring chances against Ukraine. Seb Larsson and Kim Kallstrom’s creativity could see them both play a part as the Swedes attempt to hand Hodgson his first defeat in charge of the national side, though doubts remain over who will lead the line, with Markus Rosenberg, Ola Tiovonen and Johan Elmander all vying for the lone striker role.

    captain: stay with Fabregas (12 points, 6 x 2), or give a go with Benzema?

      Fabregas. I captained Dzagoev since day 1 and sticking even though I have Debuchy, Yarmalenko, Benzema and Ibrahimovich today. I hope Benzema bangs them in but I dunno, he didn't look convincing enough against England. Might transfer him tomorrow night.

        Against England is one thing. Against Ukraine is another. England were completely in defensive mode. You can't say he wasn't convincing enough.

          For me if he was convincing enough he would have scored against England. It wasn't Italy "82 he was up against. He wasn't the main point of their attack and he's supposed to be world class after all. Torres looked class yesterday cos we were brutal, never tried. And we had a reputation as being good defensively, 14 games unbeaten, but the stats don't show most of those games were against poor opposition. We'll see how Torres does against Croatia who only conceded two goals from set pieces. England did play defensively, they had to or they would have been ripped open by Ribery and Nasri. Sweden should be easier opposition for Benzema, allagedly poor at the back, allegedly!.

                Hodgson's formation does favour Walcott's chances of getting in the side. He needs his wingers to provide defensive guile, and in such sense, you can't really find anyone better than Milner imo.

                Walcott will come on when England needs to attack.

                Milner is mainly a defensive midfielder but I reckon they should let him forward more. Among the many mysteries of Hodgson's squad selection is how Walcott got in ahead of Adam Johnson. Used mainly from the City bench for me he's way above Walcott who, if he had no pace, would not be in football.

        Quoting Impressive Tackle "Iniesta hit a shot and Given punched it out. Silva collected but did not shoot immediately. Theoretically thsi could be the bookend of the first phase of the attack. The subsequent touches from Silva could be interpreted as a “dribble” and a new phase of attack before he slid it home."

      FWIW I'm likely to bring him in. Holland appear to fighting amongst themselves again. Ronaldo will have a point to prove IMO for the criticism he's received over the last couple of days.

        I've got the cheap and cheerful popular combo of Chalkias & Andersen and can't see either getting anything, but with CS's so hard to find/predict I'm not wasting a points hit/transfer.

    This Lance Armstrong thing is bothering me. Thought he'd been cleared through a federal grand jury. Now the same people who took part in that are being asked to provide evidence again. I'd convinced myself that he was innocent at never failing a drugs test and now we have these cyclists claiming he was doping.

    Drug cheat or not?

    God damn I'm still pissed for that italy - croatia game, italy were so good for spain game and first half of croatia game, but then stopped playing and now we're going out of the tournament after group stage.

    Have to say that after that spain - croatia will end 2-2, should there be some match fixing investigations also in some other countires that italy!

    It wasn't only bad result for real life, but aslo mandzukic goal slaughtered me in my mini-league, changed him for marchisio...

        yeah, hoping so.
        Spain win croatia and then it's enough Italy to win Ireland.
        BUT since I read yesterday that if spain-croatia end 2-2, they will go through and Italy is out.
        Still having nightmares about year 2004 and certain game that "suprisingly" ended 2-2, when sweden(spain), denmark(croatia) and italy(italy) we're in this same situation.......

        Also have to say that if they go out, it's pretty much their own fault - someone should teach them that game is not over when you take a lead!

              these are the official rules:

              a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
              b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question (if more

              c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if
              more than two teams finish equal on points);
              d) superior goal difference in all the group matches;
              e) higher number of goals scored in all the group matches;
              f) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see Annex I,

    Pros
    England looked a bit toothless and defensive v France and there is no Rooney still
    Olsson might score

    Cons
    Chances are Olsson will score less than 3 points

              Yeah I would be pretty gutted if England lose 1-0 to an Olsson goal and he's sat on my bench. New plan is to wait and see if Iniesta gets his assist added and then, if not, do the substitution if I can get back from work in time.
