Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Matchday Three – Day One

It’s time to wipe the slate clean and start afresh with our captaincy options once again, as Fantasy managers ready themselves for the final round of group matches to begin tomorrow evening. With all four sides standing a chance of progressing to the last eight, defence is not an option for either of the quartet – now is the time to go on the front foot and, with no clean sheets in any of the Group A games thus far, Fantasy expectations will be high:

Current group leaders Russia square up to Greece, with Alan Dzagoev offering the main goal threat. The 7.8 priced midfielder has notched three times already, though Andrei Arshavin’s trio of assists has helped the Arsenal man to 13 points in the McDonald’s game. Roman Shirokov’s attacking menace from the midfield three could well play a part, while Aleksandr Kerzhakov may face a battle to hold down a first-team place after missing 11 chances over his two appearances – Roman Pavlyuchenko is waiting in the wings to replace him.

The Greeks are trickier to predict. Only one player – Giorgos Samaras – has started up front in their two matches so far, with Theofanis Gekas and Dimitrios Salpingidis grabbing goals against Czech Republic and Poland respectively after climbing off the bench. Konstantinos Mitroglou was afforded a 19 minute sub role against the Czechs but could earn a call-up to the starting XI as Santos reassesses his forward options.

Poland’s remit tomorrow night is simple – win against the Czech Republic and they are through. Skipper Jakub Blaszczykowski has had a hand in both his side’s goals so far, providing an assist against Greece before notching the crucial equaliser in the match with Russia – he looks set to be inspirational once more for Franciszek Smuda’s side. Robert Lewandowski’s threat up front will also be crucial, while Ludovic Obraniak’s creativity and set-piece duties have seen him provide plenty of opportunities for his team mates.

The Czech Republic will be hoping Vaclav Pilar can continue his goalscoring streak in their crucial clash with the co-hosts. The midfielder has notched in both his side’s opening two games and, priced at just 5.1, has proven to be a cut-price gem for Fantasy managers. Petr Jiracek’s move to a right wing role against Greece last time out saw him grab the opener and, with Tomas Rosicky still a doubt due to an Achilles problem, the creativity of Jaroslav Plasil looks more key than ever. Up front, Milan Baros is likely to lead the line and will be keen to pick up in performance after a disappointing couple of games so far.

Haven't done a rmt yet during the Euros, so here it is:

    Tyton
    M. Olsson - Strinic - Bonucci - Alba
    Ribery - Manzukic - Ozil - Iniesta
    Benzema - Arshavin

    Chalkias - Maniatis, Shirokov, Cassano

Scored 53 pts this round with this formation, what is worth changing? Gomez should be in here, right? And my goalies isn't good enough, neither will play next match day?!

Obviously yeah, but this is after subs to get the highest score as possible. My bench scored 6 pts, 2 each, that's why i ended up with 4 defenders. Strinic 5, Alba 6, Bonucci 4 and Olsson 2

Cheers, I am playing the Sky game so I can still make like 10 free transfers without a hit so thats not a problem.

Any German players would do really, I just don't know who is likely to be rested! Gomez/Ozil is the obvious choice I guess, although like I said, their minutes are in doubt.

Nothing to worry about. All their attacking six players could get rested. Imo Gomez, Schweini, Podolski and Muller are the most likely ones. Staying clear of German players could easily be a better punt than drafting in some of them. The only downside is that Germany should win the game easily. Neuer, Lahm and Badstuber should be their most secure starters. Badstuber got a yellow card, which is quite unsettling for him as well.

Form affects whether a player is certain to start. So far the wingers have shown that they are expandable, and the backups are more than capable of replacing them.

Erg. Decent shout. Never know if Greece are going to score or not, they always seem to get it in once somehow. Is Hart v Ukraine madness given how today went?

Or since Chalkias is not playing is it best to get another cheap keeper and have two poor keepers instead of one good one?

i would normally back Hart, but after today's antics I would be wary of doubling him up with Lescott. I'm certain Buffon's gonna keep a clean sheet, and Neuer probably will but you never know with the Danes. Ditto with Casillas and the Croatians. Personally i'm going for Malafeev and then either Neuer or Buffon (or Anderson if budget is tight)

Hey everyone, know it's a bit late and this may pass most by, but I've been doing some research into Italian starting strikers for this week after the debate I read a bit earlier over Cassano being rested.

Here's the article for any fellow Italian speakers: http://www.gazzetta.it/Europei/2012/15-06-2012/italia-il-mal-d-attacco-mario-antonio-ora-o-mai-piu-911545324425.shtml

    Basically it confirms that both Cassano and Balotelli will start again, in what's being described as a "now or never" situation for the two i.e. if they fail on Monday they won't start again. Some key quotes for you guys as well;

Prandelli on Balotelli: "You're asking me how long Italy will have to wait for Balotelli to help the national side(after only scoring one goal in 10 games)? Three days."

On Cassano, La Gazetta notes him as the slightly less confident of the two to start, although it adds that Giovinco appears to be the only one who could be alternated with him and he appears more of an understudy, really. Prandelli also seemed happy with Cassano's contribution, despite earmarking him as more of an assist player towards the team. Here's a quote: "For 70 minutes he gave everything he possibly could. He didn't relax one bit."

Prandelli on Di Natale: "He's more effective when he enters a match which is already in progress. If you start him you have to play through him, like what happens at Udinese."

Just thought I'd contribute a few notes while I'm still awake somehow, good for the translation practice as well 😛

For me it will without a doubt be Balotelli and Cassano starting on Monday, barring any injuries.

    Hope this helps a little!

Gazzetta have him as starting, in spite of being given a public bollocking by Prandelli. He keeps talking about getting a "big reaction" from Balotelli and seems convinced that this game is going to be the one for him.

As of right now, it's 95% certain Balo will start, especially given Prandelli's open reference to Di Natale as an impact player in the press conference.

A little. Cassano has been a little disappointing. The ball is round, and he may just yet to impress. This could be the MD. 😀

      I'm starting to think benzema
      - cheaper
      - france create more than england
      - ukraine's defence is better than sweden's
      - ukraine can qualify and will put up a fight / sweden have nothing to play for

I know this is over but thought might be interesting to post this and see what you peeps have to say about this. Yes, bump the thread!

"Thank you for your query regarding Iniesta's assist.

This has been reviewed and it has been confirmed that no assist should be awarded.

Iniesta's shot was parried by Given and then fallen to Silva. He then had to take several touches before threading it through the legs of three defenders therefore creating his own chance. From the rules:
    - No assist is given to a player who creates his own goal scoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

We hope you will keep enjoying McDonald's Fantasy Football

    Regards"

Rvp and Fabregas got a pass directly from a team mate, right? Then they are a part of the definition of an assist. Giving assist after rebounds or deflections are only a fantasy thing to do. When the deflected shot or pass comes to a player who has to do a lot more to score, then I don't see the point of giving the assist.
